  • Despite outcry from activists and survivors, The Gambia’s parliament advanced a bill to decriminalise female genital mutilation on 18 March.
The move has reignited a contentious debate surrounding religious and cultural practices and bodily autonomy.
If the bill is passed, the country could become the first to reverse a ban on FGM.

The woman is speaking up on behalf of all women living in her country and other countries who are having bills passed by men instead of women.
I believe men should stay out of women’s issues and allow them to make decisions on women’s rights like child marriage, FGM, dress code and their bodies especially if it’s all cultural and not religious, only then will there be some equality between the men (who have the upper hand in controlling/dominating) and women.

I hear you, but it's men who passed a law in 2015 banning female gentile mutilation, not women.Yaya jamweh, who signed the bill that banned FGM, is a man not a woman.Yaya Jamweh was elected by both men and women.
If men as a collective are out to get women, then why did the male legislators propose the law banning FGM.Why did Yaya Jamweh who happens to be a man sign thr bill into law banning FGM.
The male legislators who are in support of the repeal and those against it were all elected by men and women. So they represent their constituents, who happen to be men and women unless you are telling me that the male or female legislators who support the repeal were elected by only men.

I hear you but if men as a collective donot have women's best interests at heart then why did the male legislators propose a bill banning FGM in 2015 and why did Yaya Jamweh who happens to be a man sign it into law.He could have refused to do so or the male legislators could not even have bothered to propose a bill banning FGM.
You have said that men shd not have a say on women issues. By saying so you are admiting that the male legislators who propose a law banning FGM in 2015 were not in order bse they are not women. You are also admitting that former president Yaya jamweh who happens to be a man was not in order when he signed the bill into law banning FGM.
Male legislators are elected by both men and women to represent them in the August house therefore they qualify to talk about or legislate about any issue concerning society unless you are telling me that they(male legislators) are elected by only men which of course is ridiculous.

Negating people from a conversation purely based on their sex is the very definition of sexism. If I may ask, are you Gambian? If not, then why are you talking about Gambian internal politics when you are not Gambian. If women are the only ones to talk about women issues then it's only Gambians that are supposed to talk about Gambian internal issues.
Just like it's only cancer victims that shd talk about cancer or its only homeless people to talk about homelessness or it's only child abuse survivors to talk about child abuse or its only demostic violence survivors to talk about demostic violence.See how problematic it gets.

Gambia needs help! They are going backwards e.g. no longer providing free public education for children, filth and trash all over the place. Come on Gambia❤

I beg to differ that there's still free public education provided in all public schools. I've worked in the education sector and could tell that students don't pay school fees unless you're asked to buy "stationary".
The policy is holding across public schools.
I do agree that there are better pertinent things to fight over in this country. The country is stunted in growth in all dimensions.

@@user-nv3kr5ss5v I was in Gambia last year and our tour guide took us to a school that parents had organized and had hired their own teachers. He said they had to do this because the government was not providing it. I’m so glad to hear that this has changed.

Jaha dukureh I have went through Female circumcision and nothing absolutely happened to me. Mind you not only me but my family members, friends, and we all had our kids Alhamdullilah with zero complications. What these people are asking for is simple, they’re not saying everyone should do it By force, it’s only a choice to practice it or not to. By the way you have live in the west, no doubt you have seen transgender people changing their private parts from male to female that’s not an issue and we all know that is way far complicated than circumcision. You and your entourage should spare us with the double standards. You have been advocating the trauma you went through but that shouldn’t determine our choices in our lives. One last thing if you and sister were mutilated that doesn’t determine same thing was done to us, we were circumcised not mutilated!

My sister you need to speak for yourself. Children do not have the authority to refuse genital mutilation and it is done to appease men's egos and treat women like sex objects. Clearly you've never had a clitoral orgasm and let me inform you that you are missing out. It's mind blowing. You missed out and your daughters will miss out and you'll never have full sexual experiences or expressions. EVER!!!

Children do not give consent before these acts are committed on them please. There are different forms of genital mutilation so you and your family probably got lucky and had procedures that didn't impede normal child birth.
If you guys are happy not fully enjoying sex with your husbands that's fine. not every woman is. That shit is traumatic.

A choice?allow children to grow first than if want it or not children cannot consent, you have lack of critical thinking or you are evil
