  • The Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt opened on Wednesday to allow a number of seriously injured people and foreign nationals to leave Gaza for the first time since the war began on 7 October.
The crossing has been open and shut frequently over the years. Why is it so contentious for Egypt? And where does Egypt stand in the Israel-Palestinian conflict?
The BBC's Amal Saeed in Cairo explains.
Produced and edited by Ellen Tsang.

Why isn't Egypt allowing their own citizens come back home from Gaza now when it matters most?

I am egyptian, keep getting your knowledge from BBC and you will end up full of Bull Shit.
As an egyptian, this is a scandal for BBC. First there is no relation between the terrorist egyptian groups in Sinai and Gaza but you tend to maliciously irrelevantly mention both of them! Gaza's tunnels were continuing since more than 30+ years, on the utter contrary it was at its peak during the regime of the ex president Abdel Fattah Mobarak, and there was no such a thing as terrorism! There simply wasn't!
More than that, what is closed in Rafah crossings not tunnels! WTF willingfully closing the Rafah crossing with destroying the tunnels? The Rafah crossing is a formal openly controlled crossing! It is not a some kind of hidden thing they don't have control on! Egypt already control it but intentionally block humanitarian aid unless israel says ok!
Egypt's hostility towards Gaza dates back to 2011 and thr aftermath, Hamas was a supprter of the democratically elected government in Egypt, which was overthrown by a military coup that taken control of the country, because Hamas was an ally of the ex overthrown governmeht, the current government does not like them and want their destruction... That's why Rafah crossing is closed, because Egypt wants to destroy Hamas for prior alliance and support to the ex overthrown democratically elected government.
I am an egyptian and you are explicitly telling straight lies! Disgusting and shameful at its finest. This is why BBC is going down with millions of subscriptions and barely few viewers! No one believes any sht of you any more!

But a lot of Gazan's are Egyptian citizens and you know it. Like the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas were mainly Egyptian and Arafat was born Egyptian citizen.... Some are Saudi citizen.
And in 1948 Egypt wanted themselves like the other muslim countries to ethnically cleanse so that Israel would not exist, asking Palestinians to leave for a while so that it could be bombed.
Egypt had 75.000 Jews, they were more or the less ethnically cleansed, most of them not leaving in peace.... How many Jews do live now in Egypt? For the same reason of no capacity?

Is it too much of an ask to tell people the detail that al-Sisi is a dictator, and has been in power for some 10 years after a coup d'etat. Which is the fate or obligation of Egypt: It has to stay friendly with its mighty neighbour and their potent big sugardaddy.
