I am with her until at 2:44. The world has tackled FGM many times and still does. How often do people try to educate those people and even leaders have been exchanged for this reason? I think, on a daily basis, people try to solve this problem and even africans don't like it. It is just culture and a horrible one. If it would happen with white people, it would be exactly the same. Also as women we still don't have the status as men have, which is a big problem too. So white or black does not really matter here. It just happens in the black community, and I can't say that it doesn't happen to white girls either. She said, no one listens to black people on this matter. Again, this is not true, there are many organisations who try to have this goal that this stops, but again, because culture is so strong and their believe, it is difficult. Many black men don't even want that their woman is cut, and this goes from woman to woman. The cutter is a woman too, mostly the mom or grandmother. Another small thing on the side, why is it fine to cut boys? We do that a lot in the west, right? It doesn't damage so much as it does to women, but there is literally no point to this, unless it's health related. Otherwise this is only done because of culture and religion. And little boys suffer from that too and it bleeds. So why is that okay to do?
I agree that we need to stop male circumcision as well. It's still genital mutilation. It's done everywhere in the western world by white families in every class. It's done only for culture and religion. It's cruel and should stop. I view it the same way I view genital mutilation in these African countries.
I mean, it’s not really an issue that white people can solve anyway. Their cultural leaders/neighbors/families are African and their practices are not because of lack of white intervention. A lot of westerners are horrified and disgusted with the practice.

This is utterly abominable, what makes it even worse is that family members of young girls are holding them down,I think it's more from a domination ,men dominating women.
The women in the family are the ones who hold down the next generation, also, though. When she said all religions do this she was being in denial. This is overwhelmingly popular in Islam. Most other religions do not do this. In modern western culture after the advent of Liberal philosophy, most men came to support equal rights for women and helped to achieve it. The cultural difference is the problem, and the solution should be rule of law, not multicultural tolerance.

I agree. It's horrendous to think of anyone going through this trauma and I feel for this woman and others like her, but I was so disappointed to hear her basically hold white people responsible for the continuation of the practice due to a lack of intervention or outcry. My guess for the general 'perceived' lack of public outrage towards this practice is likely due to the exaggerated cultural sensitivity that (particularly white) people are pressured to adopt these days under threat of being labelled 'racist', 'xenophobic', etc. With all the labels such as 'islamophobe' being thrown around, it's evident that as a white person, you have to be very careful about challenging other cultural practices, even if they're abusive!

Is your country Islamic? In the west it's only Islamic enclaves that practice it in secret despite it being against the law. Islam also spread the practice to parts of Africa that didn't already have an older tradition of it.
So I'm really curious if your culture somehow developed this practice on it's own, or if it's another case of it spreading through Islam. Did your mother have it done to her, also?
I'm very sorry you went through this.
How do we fight this? I'm absolutely mortified for these poor children

Not only the abuse itself but the fact that it is the people closest to you who do it...just what does that do to a child...
I don't think its fair to place this under the umbrella of black vs white. I'm white. I remember when i found out about fgm. I was outraged, how could they do that to a little girl?!? Why are we letting this happen?? The comeback was always something along the lines of it being a part of these girls religion or culture. That you cant just dictate how other people live or or practice their faith. Essentially, that it was nobody else's business. So its not for a lack of wanting to help. Its absolutely horrifying what is done to these poor girls. Horrifying.
Give me a break. It doesn't matter if its their culture or religion. Child abuse is unacceptable no matter what.
Anybody who does this is a criminal and should be tried and locked up for many years.
No one should be robbed of his or her right to control his or her own body.
That would mean locking up a third of the world's population including most US Americans...

In terms of the cultural relativism argument, no one should suffer for 'culture', no one's rights should be curtailed for 'tradition'. And anyway, most of the time those bleating loudest about 'preserving tradition' when it comes to FGM or other abuses are the men in power because ultimately its about protecting patriarchy not the real culture.

This brutal practice has to end! I feel sorry for the kids who went through so much pain & suffering.
She lost me at that point, too.

@@ANPC-pi9vu I come from a Christian country. It's not that other religions don't do this, it's that it's practised in secret. Fgm is sadly prevalent among many communities in my country. But I tend to think that it's a cultural practise that people have used to influence religion
Omg!!!! It's so tragic.. Incredibly saddening!
I agreed with her until 2:40+ . The reason it's not beeing tackled is not because of racism . Quite the opposite actually. If someone calls the people that do such procedures savages etc and asks them to change , they are called RACIST
Why is there no outcry within the black community? Why do the aunties and the parents and the men in these communities not see the fault in their ways? The outcry has to be in the own community first, so that there is a desire to change.
