They made alliances with the local Slavic tribes which ultimately formed the Kievan Rus Empire which covered a large area from Novgorod in northwestern Russia all the way to Kiev in Ukraine as the capital. What's ironic is Putin is using this history to justify his invasion of Ukraine, when in truth; Kiev should be the rightful ruler both Russia and Belarus by the same logic. This is why imperialism or nationalism doesn't make any sense in today's world.
