I think I speak not only for myself when i say that SotL is a crazy blessing for the Age-community! Just imagine what it would be without him and his helpful videos.
AoE 4 seems like a good mix of AoE2 (units), AoE3 (landmarks for up, docks healing, water), AoM (choices when going up, unique civs), with unit abilities, wall archers, infantry building rams and siege towers etc. It's a really good mix. It just is not so polished right now. But definitely has a long future.
"Unique civs" Dude there is no unit type diversity and if you think that one civ moving their buildings or another using an empire earth 2 mechanic to research technologies or a civ that cant hunt, or a civ with a extra age up mechanic on top of the overwhelming buffing/debuffing aura reliance is what you think is unique i can see you've not played many asymmetric rts games aside from aom.
I've been playing a ton as the Mongols and a few things I have noticed. I wouldn't call them tips or tricks more like bugs. 1 - The Lancer is stated to be available in Feudal age for the Mongols but aren't available until Castle Age, hopefully this gets fixed because it seems incredibly important. 2 - Some of the techs don't distinguish between the base upgrade and the stone cost upgrade. Not many but a few 3- Lancers made at the Khaganate Palace do not upgrade automatically when Elite Lancers is researched. Actual tips. Mongols gain bonus when trading. I see a lot of people under value The Silver Tree landmark. -50% gold cost and -50% build time for traders is incredibly powerful. Plus if you have a certain number of traders they gain a bonus where they get extra food and wood (as well as stone and gold if researched in the Imperial age) the more traders they have (up to 9). Mongol research done at the Ovoo is incredibly important. Try to research those with stone. Having 5 seconds extra duration on Khan abilities is nice but 7 seconds is even better. Same goes with the Castle Age additional torches upgrade. Your melee army can shred through buildings like butter if this is researched. If you research the Kurultai, don't forget you can move it! Send it to the front lines so your army has a 25% damage bonus for 30 seconds before engaging in combat. Be aggressive! Prayer Tents can be upgraded in the Imperial age to act as Ovoo. They don't generate any stone but they do give the influence bonus. Make use of it in drawn out games. The blacksmith upgrade Siege Engineering can be upgraded with stone to allow your infantry to construct most Siege Workshop units such as Mangonels. Powerful upgrade if you need it. Remember that spending stone takes the same time as the non stone spent upgrade. If you know you are going to get an upgrade that is important (Looking at you Military Academy) it is best to research it once with the stone cost. Once your ovoo is placed you can move your Town Center and spend stone to produce 2 villagers at a time for the price of 1 (well plus 150 stone) I don't know if this is worth it compared to making a 2nd TC at the cost of 900 wood but it's an option for quick and early villager count. Huge huge fan of the Mongols most fun I've had in an AoE game to date they feel so much better than their AoE2 counterpart I hope everyone is enjoying AoE4!
Its indeed the most fun civ i have ever played in any rts. Thanks for these tips, i really overlooked the trading buffs. The required micro/macro management is pretty insane though x).
You can also put your tc right next to stone and drop an ovoo at the start. I'm not sure if this is useful either but maybe getting 2 villagers at a time for the price of 1 (and 150 stone) is worth it. I didn't do that and put mine near a woodline then raided with mangudai. Because removing units from a control group is ass, for now don't add units to a control group until it's safe and they won't run through a tc. I ran mangudai through a tc once and through an enemy another time because I added them to the control group a bit early for the tc one. I should've just waited for my main army to meet up with reinforcements. Starting tcs fire arrows ungarrisoned. Starting scout autoheals. English Tcs fire double arrows and their vills fire ranged shots. The bonuses says they're tougher. I don't think they have more hp but didn't check. Just don't hit English early.

Just a tip about Chinese dynasties - while you can't go back to a dynasty you have already unlocked, you don't have to unlock them in chronological order, so if you want to end on a specific dynasty you just have to leave it for last.
a tip for delhi sultanate, the influence area of mosque's is INFINITE as long as you expand it via buildings. you need to connect that influence area with any building that has research. so if you want to build 4 mosques in the back of your base, and buff the research of buildings further away, you can connect that influence area with mills for example.

For Mongols, the current meta I'm seeing for them is a trade boom. Using the ovoo, you can create double trade units, for cheaper. This gives the Mongols a huge trade bonus, early in the game. And their outpost give traders extra speed, making it worth wild to have some along the trade route, for both protection and buffs.
its really simple tho, HRE priest buff your units one by one and you can upgrade that buff to make it even stronger, Rus's priest just need to attack any enemy to give ALL your units in that priest's range a buff and you could also upgrade that buff.
This game feels like what AoE 3 should've been. AoE2 will still stay popular after this games release due to its simple and refined mechanics, but I think AoE4 will develop a solid player base for those who want more variation in play styles

Some really useful tips here! Thanks for the video! It filled in a lot of the questions I had about the game after watching a bunch of gameplay and guides.
A couple secrets you didn't mention: HRE villagers have a unlisted civ bonus that lets them carry more (I heard its 40%) Mongol Oovoo increase the spawning speed of sheep in its influence range (and the Mongol monastery can replicate this effect with a tech)
i would to point out if you set a spawn point on a resource (like bush or tree) if the tree is completely used up the newly spawned villager will search for the nearest tree anyways. lastly, if a villager has 8 or 10 resurce and you tell him to get build or gather something else, his inventory deletes. so try to choose a villager without any resources. same goes for market mules. if one has gold from a trade post on the map and your ally makes a new trade post, let your mule deliver his gold FIRST. if you tell him to change route to your ally's trade post he will auto delete the current gold in his inventory
So far, the one thing I want the most right now is the ability to see unit stats from the tech tree. I mean, knowing their cost and training time is nice, but how good are they? For example, it says landsknechts have less health then M@A. Okay, but HOW MUCH? Seriously, is the ability to compare unit stats without having to divert your attention away from a live game too much to ask?
@@blakefleischman9179 I know you can do that in the middle of a match, but that's the thing; IT'S IN THE MIDDLE OF A MATCH. I'm not exactly The Viper or Hera when it comes to APM, so I'd like to be able to check and compere unit stats in an environment where I don't have to worry about a dozen horsemen suddenly attacking my lumberjacks.
@@hs342 Okay, so I may have used a bit of hyperbole, but my point still stands, why shouldn't we be able to go into a match with the knowledge of unit stats in advance? For example, despite having spent quite a bit of time going over the tech trees of the various civs, I still don't know the base stats for a lot of units. If you asked me what the base damage and health of a knight is, I honestly couldn't tell you, compared to AoE2 where I can tell you off the top of my head it's 10 and 100, respectively. Heck, I can tell you that a Elite Kamayuk has a base attack of 8, and I've never even played as the Inca. Plus, consider more casual players. My dad, who is over 60, is thinking about getting the game, and while I doubt he'll ever try his hand at PvP, even against the AI expecting him to stop and check unit stats mid-game is a bit much, whereas if he could view them in the tech tree, it would probably help him greatly. P.S. Sorry for the wall of text, I just needed to rant.
@@MagisterProcellas Holy crap. I haven't played aoe2 in a long while but when you said the 10/100 for knights, it reminded me that I also remember that as well, lol. And what you're advocating for is a more polished UI, which I totally agree with. What HS is countering with, is saying relic shouldn't bother improving the game and everyone should just memorize all of the stats or not bother playing pvp. Completely asinine logic. That's like if someone is advocating for save points and another person counters with 'instead of save points, you should learn how to not die or not bother playing the game'. Yea, ok buddy, thanks.
A tip for Mongols: If you research a technology the improved variant loses it's non-stone cost, so you don't spend double the resources. This means there's only a research time loss associated with researching base technologies, which is moot if you do it with a structure that doesn't fit around the ovoo
Not sure if you noticed, but you can keep hitting the camp button on longbows and they will make extra camps until the entire formation has a healing aura!
Ahh, this is the life. AoE4 has stats I do not know yet, so I can enjoy these videos not just for their quality, but also learn something. The sheep gather point caused me fits in the Stresstest.
Here's a question I think desperately needs answering: What effect, if any, does putting spearmen in stand ground stance before receiving a cavalry charge have?
A tip for France: the guild house is increadibly strong and I would advise only taking that, you can get up to 600 of any one resource per minute. While its not the best for aggresive plays, you can easily outlast any opponent with just how much additional resources your getting. I was able to get almost 10,000 gold stored in about 20 or so minutes.
@@pattonramming1988 it's just god tier, France already has an incredible eco and great late game units. Now they have a building that will single handedly win you games if it goes long enough. Reminds me of AoE 3 France, in that once it goes past like 30 minutes you just lose because France will out eco you and just beat any army you have.
Unless you're the Mongols. No walls for them. Then again, you can just pack up your buildings and move to a better location, pretty much for free. Just takes a little time.
I strongly dislike how wall heavy this game is. They need to be more expensive since it feels like there is no cost of literally walling everything. On top of that units on walls get absolutely huge bonuses. It just slows the game too much especially when most civs seem to want to get to late game. Holy sites being capturable only at age3 and the timer being 10min iirc there is just not anything that encourages, let alone forces, players to end the game before 25min.
@@westy1637 Moving your buildings pauses your economy and production and takes way too much micro so it's not really viable on a larger scale. One thing they should definitely fix is the buildings taking pop cap when on the move. Good luck relocating anything with 200 population.
Vs the French arbeletier just move away if they setup shields as English with longbows. There's a cooldown on how often the arbeletier can setup. On water just dodge. The maps are massively French favored because in age 2 the French get hulks which counter arrow ships and the only ships other civs can make in age 2 are arrow ships. If you want elo playing French might get some cheese wins before the French hulk gets nerfed. Would not be surprised if French had an 80% winrate on islands or archipelago. I played a bit of aoe4, and I think everyone's a noob right now. We're very sloppy, keyboard shortcuts suck, we don't know a lot about how things work, and we're not used to attack sound notifications. This video is helpful for everyone, I learned a lot.
What civ has the best combination of economy and military based on your experience? My personal pick is the holy Roman empire with the Regnatz Cathedral giving you a massive influx of gold that can be defended easily and the Newark Palace saves you a good bit on blacksmith Their infantry can mow down most armies especially when they're fully upgraded and if you support them with crossbows and gunners they are nigh unstoppable
Hey SoTL there a glitch on basic combat training right after the horse vs archer, you can click on the pike building get a free pike army for the next battle when i did it works when narrator is saying enemy coming in force, im pretty sure. first time did it by accident! In the Art of war if that wasnt clear!
AoE4 is so much better than previous iterations of the game. In the sense that it is much more complex and has got some serious mechanics. It also has Rise of Nations feel.
Thanks for this great content! I recently come back to aoe2 After i played as a kid and i'm enjoying the game much more! Now you're helping me start with aoe4, which i'm really liking, so thanks a lot. One question: When you Say that knights and Lancer have the sane characteristic do you mean also the bonus against cavalry? So can i use knights as an anti cavalry?
WhAt happened to the massive ships from aoe3 ? They were amazing Some cool additions would be infantry formations and unit morale - ability to capture surrendered soldiers
Great video man! love this game, went in a bit late. Many players i face seem to have alot stronger economy and early game than I have (age 2/3) Question: when is a good time to make a 2:nd town center?
I have a question about stone wall towers : If you put a springald upgrade, does it remove the original arrow damage ? Seems that it should 'add' a new attack, but it looks like it only does the springald attack after the upgrade
What about garrisoning? Is there any difference between putting a villager vs a spearman vs an Archer in a building or do they all provide the same effect? Also do units heal while garrisoned? I think they used to in aoe2 but can't remember for sure
I hope someday nations and societies across the world will one day learn to resolve their differences through wars in future AOEs or simulations, rather than in the world that appears to be the 'most real'.

Oh boy, Aoe4 really revived this channel, Spirit must be happy as fugg lmao
this is marvels for me. thanks so much!! I love this for strategy game playing, I always look into these details because it really matters and is cool
His pronunciation of the units/buildings
in-game are on point.
Hell yeah baby, thats what I was waiting for :)
Nice video bro !
Looking forward to all your AOE4 vids SotL!
A tip for Mongols: If you research a technology the improved variant loses it's non-stone cost, so you don't spend double the resources. This means there's only a research time loss associated with researching base technologies, which is moot if you do it with a structure that doesn't fit around the ovoo
Wow aoe4 looks amazing
Not sure if you noticed, but you can keep hitting the camp button on longbows and they will make extra camps until the entire formation has a healing aura!
Great video! Recommended for both new players and as a refresher course for experienced ones
I’m not sure the exact bonus but I did read there was a increased damaged for spearman when braced for a cav charged
it stops the cavalry's charge attack bonus
So far I've won the battle of Hastings and sacked York, loving it!
English campaign is nice, But the french one... I had a 150 man royal knight army. Stomp stomp stomp. Also their cannons are nice.
Really appreciate the guides! Keep up the good work. Would like to see guides in the future that aim at a bit more experienced players as well :)
I love using the Guildhall especially on maps lacking in wood
@@pattonramming1988 it's just god tier, France already has an incredible eco and great late game units. Now they have a building that will single handedly win you games if it goes long enough. Reminds me of AoE 3 France, in that once it goes past like 30 minutes you just lose because France will out eco you and just beat any army you have.
it's weird that the game characterizes france as aggressive when they're the best boom civ

SOTL Thanks for the Tips and Tricks!
I like this outro dynasty we have entered. I hope SotL can build the "spirit way" soon and do the intro as well as the outro in the same video!
A nice PSA is that pastures also produce sheep faster around ovoos
excited for the gather rate tests
9:13 This is a berry good tip, thanks.
Good video and the first english people who said « arbalétrier » the good way
You are very good at this stuff spirit of the law
Forgot to mention that abasids can eventually use archers/infanty to build mangonels as well as rams and seige towers
Great pronounciation of the French words!
this game makes emphasis on strategic building placement and unit researches
I love how this game ecourages you to build walls. It always felt strange to me how walls wasn't meta.
Walls are incredibly meta for good AOE2 players
@@sesleri yeah, quick walling or to prevent early raids.
I mean that now walls have an important role in the late game also.
But i am kinda noob tho
I BET YOUR SO HAPPY AOE 4 CAME OUT MORE CONTENT FOR YOU
AoE 4 looks so cool! Looking forward to playing it this weekend! =D
It has begun! A new age of mathematics from SOTL!
Love it , just played one match and now I am learning to be a pro 😂
What civ has the best combination of economy and military based on your experience?
My personal pick is the holy Roman empire with the Regnatz Cathedral giving you a massive influx of gold that can be defended easily and the Newark Palace saves you a good bit on blacksmith
Their infantry can mow down most armies especially when they're fully upgraded and if you support them with crossbows and gunners they are nigh unstoppable
Excellent, thanks for the awesome vid
Mongols are efficient ! I'm hyped to start play this game
Hey SoTL there a glitch on basic combat training right after the horse vs archer, you can click on the pike building get a free pike army for the next battle when i did it works when narrator is saying enemy coming in force, im pretty sure. first time did it by accident! In the Art of war if that wasnt clear!
Very informative, thanks
10:40 there is no way this mounted archer shot the deer like this ! Maybe a bird...
Were you playing the deer ?
Was listening to this video in the background and spent an embarrassing amount of time mulling over the phrase "dogs heal nearby ships".
Woof!
Great tips!
Additional tip: Animals do not decay when slain.
AoE4 is so much better than previous iterations of the game. In the sense that it is much more complex and has got some serious mechanics. It also has Rise of Nations feel.
Clash of clans tips and secrets! Thank u so much
Great videos! Loving the game
pls can you do a guide on naval units? The whole cone of attack thing is so much different from how it was in aoe2
1:35 even the farm is paying respects to the locked out villagers.
No Context: "feel free to fire indiscriminately into a large group"
Very helpful! Thank you friend
Thanks for this great content! I recently come back to aoe2 After i played as a kid and i'm enjoying the game much more! Now you're helping me start with aoe4, which i'm really liking, so thanks a lot.
One question:
When you Say that knights and Lancer have the sane characteristic do you mean also the bonus against cavalry? So can i use knights as an anti cavalry?
Thank you so much. I just bought the game and have been getting roled by the intermediate ai for 3 days now 😭
Well I feel dumb now, I hadn't realized that siege weapons don't damage your own guys anymore! :D Thanks!
Thank you 👍
I like the arrow firing out of buildings in aoe2 more. It doesn't just come out of one spot on the building.
Thanks Spirit :)
Imagine how star fortress and other real-life warfares tactics were implemented in this game... I mean it's technically possible in this game
It could be an Italian unique building, but this era wasn't really big about star forts.
WhAt happened to the massive ships from aoe3 ? They were amazing
Some cool additions would be infantry formations and unit morale - ability to capture surrendered soldiers
You're a hero!
good video, i learned stuff
Build orders coming soon? 👀
Will you please still do Elephant facts?
Could you do a settings video, and explain how you select units for hotkeys?
I would like to see more of the campaign as the last video on the campaign left me curious on the next campaign missions
I just can't warm up to these homing missile projectiles.
