Back when music was music... and was performed by artists with genuine talent.
Great memories of the 1960s. I'm old and proud of it.
Dusty what a voice the best white British soul singer of her time,.Sadly missed.
Indeed
This is my favorite video of this song. I love the 60s (or early 70s?) hair and clothes, and especially those 60's-looking moves she makes with her arms. Sing it Dusty!
She was so beautiful
You know you knocked it out the ballpark when the "queen of soul" turns down a song, Ms. Dusty does it, and then the queen/ Aretha decides to cover what should have been her original. DROP THE MIKE, MS. DUSTY... HAS LEFT THE BUILDING 💃💃💃
Dusty is a legend.
I’m 41 and I was introduced to this when I saw pulp fiction in theaters at 12
love this song
The wonderful voice "Dusty" always peaked my ears whenever I heard her on the radio
timeless, absolutely timeless
one of the best female artistes of our time
Not as good as Bobbie Gentry.
one of my favorite songs of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dusty is Groovy!
Whatever she sang instantly became a better song because she was singing it.The true tragedy of Dusty is that we are unlikely to ever again see such a great talent.
Can hear this thousand times close my eyes and every time brings me back to when I was young. Just love her voice.
Love you Dusty,Great song.
Timeless Song... Speaks to the soul :-)
My mom used to play her "Memphis" album on the stereo (furniture) when I was young. Even then I knew this was something special…I was five. R.I.P. Dusty. You sure had some pipes.
what a voice...
She was a star-her music is timeless.
What a beautiful and talented lady!
One thing about a hit song is....you better like it a lot!!! because you will be singing it THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!
Love this song!
yes you can tell her apart from anyone else. she was a true gem. soulful as they come this side of miss franklin. she was a great lady and a great vocalist.
The best, the best, oh yeah, the best! Dusty Springfield.
She has great voice dynamics.

Super! The best Song from Dusty !
Love it
Great vocal...phat brass...trippy dancing. Southern funk
Many, many artists flocked to Memphis in the late 60s to record at American Studios and of course, the Stax studios with the great musicians there. Dusty in Memphis is to this day an amazing album and is dripping with that Memphis Soul!
Dusty you are Awesome
Beautiful!
Absolutly Breathtaking
What a cooooool bass line.
I heard Dusty ran into Aretha while her version was huge. They were on an elevator together and Aretha never said a word to her or even looked at her. I also heard that Dusty was thrilled/honored to have done something Aretha was jealous of.
So good.
Fantastica.
Awesome lady
Nice and sweet.
Love female singers with raspy voices.
Mujer bandera!!.....She come fm another era....another universe.....when girls were beautiful inside out.....when one knew ....today....nobody knows....
For my baby!! Forever shame on mommy!! What can I say. Will always love this song!!"Telling Me he's All Mine".
The best of "Blue Eye Soul".
Right, song was originally offered first to Aretha and she declined. However, after hearing Dusty's version, she changed her mind. Aretha and Dusty were in an elevator and Aretha's comment to Dusty about her vocal performance on the song was, "Girrllllll." That said it all. Dusty delivered a killer vocal on it.
+Lori Romano I just posted that same comment about Aretha turning it down until she heard Dusty's version on Facebook a couple of minutes ago! It was on the famous "Dusty In Memphis" album which has one of the sexiest covers ever made! OH YEAH!
Lori Romano what a great story - the women was and is a genius - I love Dusty!
This song 👍👍👍👍👍
Good ol' history
Man that’s GOOD!
When music was sung from the heart.. none of this modern gibberish waffle you here these days ..
can you imagine all the gospel church nutured, then successful singers, that had to turn this song down?
Dusty goes to Memphis and the rest is history. Memphis in 1968 sees Neil Diamond and Elvis as well.
Did Dusty meet Elvis Presley in the Memphis Recording ?
Classy lady.
pure legend
Super Dusty.
You go dusty
No, Kids - do NOT compare Dusty to Adele. Show some respect. She is dead and cannot defend that statement AND she is in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, which I doubt Adele will ever see without an admission ticket.
Right on
+M70ACARRY yeah bruv
+Steve Salke Agreed on everything except - if people like Madonna and the late Donna Summer can get into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame then Adele has a shot too. Just saying..
+Margaret Tudor Yes, sad, isn't it? Maybe it should be called the 'Popular Music and perhaps some Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame'.
+Steve Salke Adele who? Dusty RULES!!!! I also don't care who makes it into the Rock Hall. Since I live in Cleveland, it's only a few minutes down the road.
Billy Ray was a preacher's son
And when his daddy would visit he'd come along
When they gathered around and started talkin'
That's when Billy would take me walkin'
Out through the back yard we'd go walkin'
Then he'd look into my eyes
Lord knows, to my surprise
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, ooh, yes he was
Bein' good isn't always easy
No matter how hard I try
When he started sweet-talkin' to me
He'd come'n tell me "Everything is all right"
He'd kiss and tell me "Everything is all right"
Can I get away again tonight?
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, ooh, yes he was (yes he was)
How well I remember
The look that was in his eyes
Stealin' kisses from me on the sly
Takin' time to make time
Tellin' me that he's all mine
Learnin' from each other's knowin'
Lookin' to see how much we've grown and
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, oh yes he was
He was the sweet-talkin' son of a preacher man
(The only boy who could ever teach me)
Was the son of a preacher man
(The only one who could ever reach me)
Was the sweet-talkin' son of a preacher man
My mum was in a small local band when I was younger and used to record her sessions and they would automatically down onto my iPod back in the day.. I honestly thought this was HER! I heard Dusty for years and honesty thought it was my Mother's voice as they sound identical.
She's just a (now) 48 year old white woman living in a small town In England and nobody knew where her voice came from.
She found out a few years ago she was a adopted and her dad was a fairly famous soul singer in the 60s who was famous for sounded like a Black soul singer whilst being a white man from a city in England. She goes to her office job every day like normal and it's so strange to think she could have been part of this scene...
The only people who enjoy her music are the commuters sat next to her on the roads as she drives to work and sings out her window.
Awesome
Outstanding .... a class act .. !
DUSTY ALWAYS MADE SOUND,AND LOOK EASY.
What a song
Excellent
GREAT !!!!!!!!
love the song, Gorgeous !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok I've listened to about 7 different people sing this song, some awesome versions out there but none are as sweet as this one ;) (and I can't enough of her prayer gesture whenever she says "preacher" rotflmao)
super
Happy birthday Dusty!
MY FAVORITE!!!! THANK U SO MUCH FOR SHARING
this is proper singing no lip sync
This song helped expose me further to soul. I always "got" that soul wasn't exclusive of white contribution, as genuine and not merely imitative as flattering. She could sing with the best, as one of the best. soul knows all colors, and props to those who pioneered soul - gospel influence and tradition- in popular music! ;)
Man what moves she had ,white soul
THE FIRST 45 RPM RECORD I EVER BOUGHT.

All these years, I thought a black woman was singing.

Me too!!!
Tommy Estrada it was. ARETHA re did this back then and slayed it
Yes, but a little late. This song was offered first to Aretha and she rejected it. So, when Dusty recorded it, she made her version. A great one, but for me this song belongs to Dusty!
Tommy Estrada Lol, nope blue eyed blonde!

Yeah!! Can't nobody sing it like Dusty!!!! Bobby was ok, but not better than Dusty!! I love ❤️ it!!!!!
The answer to your question 3 southernguy. It was John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins who wrote this song.
freaking cool song ,and a English chick
Before Atlantic Records Wexler was at the Brill Building , where every hit for a Decade was written and produced . Google history-of-rock brill building.
