The Nike Free Metcon 5 is the fifth model to debut in Nike's popular Free Metcon training shoe line.
Since the original Nike Free Metcon shoe, I've been a fan of this training shoe line and I was super excited to put the Free Metcon 5 to the test. I was most curious to see if Nike tweaked the fit and sizing of this model.
In my Nike Free Metcon 5 review, I'll cover all of the key details that you need to know before buying these shoes.

Overall, I've been really happy with my Nike Free Metcon 5s and I enjoy the updates that have been made to this shoe.
The reworked upper and tongue give this shoe a more spacious fit and I think this shoe would do a better job of working for more foot anatomies.
If you're wanting a shoe for HIIT, classes, and light to moderate strength training, then I think you'll enjoy the Nike Free Metcon 5.

Its crazy how far your channel has come compared to other channels with more subs. Great quality vids
Slow and steady gains! I really appreciate you saying that, though, sincerely. It's the best compliment to receive on the channel - thank you.
Just have to keep chipping and punching up!
Wow thank you for doing this, I’ve been trying to find a fair assessment of this shoe for heavier lifting and this is the only one that has been useful. Keep it up!
Ay, glad it helped! Thank you!
Appreciate the review and just picked up a pair - good call and they’re a great gym shoe for my functional training needs 👍
Awesome, glad they're working well for you!
Hi Jake, im new in this of buying a correct shoe for workout, I always use my running shoes for everything. Im between this model and the nano x2 that its on sale, im looking for a shoe that have enough support for some weight lifting and body weight exercise (not heavy lifting at the moment) and 5km outsides runs on regular basis (3 to 4 times a week) what do you recommend ? You do a great job at here btw.
I would explore the Nike Free Metcon 5 first and see how they work for you! Since you're new to this world of shoes it's going to take some trial and error to see what works well for you. The NFM5 would be a good first call, though, imo!
Thank you for checking out the content!
Hello. between this model and the nano x3, which would be the most versatile? (classes, light weight lifting, short runs, and going for a walk with them)
Great question. I want to say Nike because of its more athletic fit.
I don't buy many trainers but I still watch your videos, I kind of still want to know about them even if I can't afford them 😅
Haha, I appreciate that! I do the same thing with Tacoma parts 😅
Hey Jake! These have been sold out forever and so I decided to go for the Nano x4s. When I go heavier on the squat, though, the narrowness of the nano makes my foot a bit hurting. Otherwise they're spectacular. How does nano x4 compare to the free metcon 5 for lifting? Are the metcons much less stable or just a little bit? And do these feel like soft running shoes or do they have some stabilization to them?
They'll feel a little less stable and be more comfy for running. Granted, if these work for your foot anatomy better then you'll likely internally feel them as more stable because you won't have any discomfort
Bro, was that a locked out knee, stiff leg box jump?
Are the heels a bit high so it's compatible with Achilean tendinitis? I usually can't wear xfit shoes because they are too flat. Thanks
These shoes be okay, imo! Or at least worth trying to see if they'd work for you since you have a specific fit ask!
Hi!!! Thanks for this video :) One question, wich one do you recommend for hiit, Nike Air Zoom Superrep or Nike Metcon 5? Thanks again!!!
I’d go for these!
Thank you!
I Love Superreps for HIIT. I do feel the con with thrse are I always am front biased when I walk in them cause of the under toe design. It's not a bad thing, just something to be cognizant of.
Awesome Review!
Thank you!
Hi Jake, thank you for the great review. I had fifth metatarsal foot fracture a year ago and thankfully could get back to routine hit workout after awhile. I was wondering what shoes you recommend to me for hit class. Thank you again.
These could be a good option to start with. I'd try these out or wear them in store and see how they fit/you like them. Then you can go from there!
@@thatfitfriend Thank you for quick response! Best luck....
@@alirezatorabi1197 Let me know how those work. If they're a no-go I can shout other options!
Just bought these based on your recommendation, they're my favorite training shoe since the free x Metcon from around 5-6 years ago. Appreciate the advice!
Let’s go! Love hearing that :)
The OG Free x metcon are the absolute best shoes I ever had. I miss them
@@OSS976 the cookies and cream colorway 🤌
@@thatfitfriend so sick I had those and the team royal and yellow colorway
@@OSS976 the first free x metcons are still my favorite training shoe to this day. I still have a pair that the grip is completely gone because I used them so much. I think these Free x Metcon 5’s and the Metcon Sport are the closest to how the originals felt.
I find these to be slightly too tight/narrow in the toe box - any recommendation for a similar shoe for somebody with a slightly wider foot?
Check out the Altra solstice XT 2 (lower drop) or Reebok Nano X3 (7mm drop)
I got my ankle sprained, gonna restart my workout again.
You recommend for HIIT, a lot of jumping & multi directional training too? I love light weight shoes but still need some support.
Should be okay! However, with injuries it can be highly variable so please keep that in mind!
Thank you 😊
I love that the 5 is more roomy. I have wide feet and the 4 kills me. After I watched your review, I bought the same awesome bright yellow color. Thank you for the great review
Heck yeah, stoked you like the 5! Thank you for checking out the review :)
@@thatfitfriend❤
Great thorough and insightful review. Thank you
Thank you for checking it out!
difference in the heel cup, is it better the tpu of the 5 or the strap of the 4?
I think it’s better, but I also didn’t mind the 4s boot!
Hey! Nike has these on their site but advertised as women's. However the sizes include /M also.. are these unisex shoes?
I feel like they should run unisex, but that’s just my hunch. Nike isn’t the best at always making that clear
Is this shoe good for running and walking? and which nike shoes do you consider the best for running and walking
Decent for short runs and comfy for walking!
I usually don't like this color at all. But this combination has something. And their intense color. In reality, they seem much more beautiful to me than the black and gray ones.I bought them online and the package was so light in weight that I quickly opened it thinking it was an empty box.
They have that old school Volt colorway vibe!
Friend I hope you can answer me🥺 I am a little overweight, and I want to start going to the gym, I will do slow cardio on the treadmill, and exercises with weights, and I want them for daily gym use, that are comfortable for walking, do you recommend these nike free metcon 5 Or do you recommend other tennis shoes?
I’d start with these then go from there. Don’t overcomplicate it and get a feel for these shoes, then you’ll have a better understanding what you like/don’t like :)
Stoked for you getting into it! Shout if you have additional questions/need anything!
@@thatfitfriend thanks for answering 🥺
If I want some shoes for daily use that are comfortable, to go for a walk, jump rope, or jog a little, which one do you recommend? Or any running style shoe will work for me? I suffer a lot from foot pain and I want something comfortable and long-lasting.
@@thatfitfriend The Nike Free Metcon 5 works better for the gym and weights and not for everything mentioned above (walking daily, jumping rope, running slowly and making it comfortable), right? If I'm wrong tell me
The best shoe ive used at the gym is the nike free tr8---is this shoe comparable or is there something else thats better?
Yeah, it's the most similar for modern-day shoes
are they good for boxing training or better metcon 9? or pain in the heels. Thank you
Better than the Metcon 9 for that ask. Air Zoom TR 1 could also work here!
Thanks
What do you recommend for lifting, this or the metcons 8/9? :)
Metcon 8 or 9 will give you more stability for a lifting-focused ask! Either option will be solid, but I'd go 8 if you want to save money.
@@thatfitfriend got this, thanks so much 🙏
Great review. Good to know they would be good for my flat feet.
Thank you!
Hi, would you say the sizing of this is similar to Vomero 5s?
Yep! Should be pretty dang similar if not these feeling a little wider
I bought them for when I’m pregnant again. they’re easy to put on and a little wider than the Nikes I used for my 1st pregnancy 😂
I just got a pair of these which I bought in my exact size (US 8.5 M) but it feels soo tight and I’m not even wearing my socks yet. Will it loosen up after breaking in for a few weeks?
Probably, but if it’s that tight, I’d go up a half size
@@thatfitfriend I was expecting it to be a good fit since I’ve read it many say it’s good with wide feet. Might need a size up but I’ll break it in first. Thanks! Suvscribed as well ;)
Yeah, sizing can be a pain because companies and folks define wide differently. Always a spectrum there!
Thank you 🤝
For heavy lifting, what is the max weight you would recommend lifting with this shoe?
I would stay around 275 for deads/245 for squats, personally. Could you push them a bit more? For sure, but there are better options if the goal is pushing more weight. I notice the forefoot compress past 225 lbs
@@thatfitfriend thank you. I do appreciate the quick response.
@@ayobamichiemeke717 You're welcome!
Is anyone else feeling the area where tongue meets shoe feels really tight and digs into your foot? Idk if it’s shape of my foot but it’s really uncomfortable which sucks because I love the looks.
Likely! That’s the issue with bootie-style shoes. Your foot volume and arch may not align with the tongue/boot in this iteration
Great review... based on what I'm hearing and seeing, I think I'll stick with my 4's. (For now) 😂
A lot of the same same for those who love the 4s. Just some QoL updates with these!
What’s the difference between the Metcon 5 and Metcon 5 TB?
Tbh, I think it's just a spin-off colorway option that might have a slight tweak in materials, but nothing crazy diff!
New to the channel sir ! Where can I buy this color shoe at ?
Ay, welcome! I got these off of Nike's site, but they routinely rotate colors in and out. I'd search something like, "Nike Free Metcon 5 electric colorway" and see if there are any still out there. Wouldn't be surprised if they're gone gone
@@thatfitfriend thanks brother I really appreciate it !!!!
How to get this green version, i cant find it anywhere in europe
It may be discontinued, Nike regularly discontinues colors
*I returned my pair because the front of the shoes are incredibly tight. Also, they are not at all breathable. If you put your hand inside the shoe and blow on top of the shoe, you don’t feel any air going through.*
Thanks for sharing your experiences! I’m curious, Which shoe do you think you’re going to try next?!
Which shoes did you end up replacing them with?
Have revisited this video so many times in the past week. Finally ordered these after all your reviews on them. I preferred Metcon 4 design-wise as I think it has "NIKE" written at the back, which I really liked. Ordered Metcon 5 though. Hopefully, they fit my weird wide feet. Will share my experience soon (For peeps reading the comments).
How is the fit brother??? Also can you do light running in these, like 10 mins on a treadmill??
heel drop? same as metcon 7,8? 4-5mm
5mm!
Hi, what is the drop of the shoe ?
5mm
How is it for lateral movements?
Works fine, imo!
Really great review!! Nike started the concept of natural barefoot movement which allows the feet to move freely. The Metcon Free could have, should have but unfortunately, is not the shoes that will set your feet free.
Thank you 🤝
I dunno why but I honestly think these kicks look dope as fuck. I've been squatting, leg pressing in metcon 7's and they are very stable for quad lifts. I want to try these but not sure if I'm gonna be disappointed after watching your review! 😂😂😂
They'll be okay, but compared to your 7s I think you'll notice a difference regarding stability! Could be worth grabbing and using for versatile sessions and keeping the 7s for lifting-focused days.
Which one should i buy? Metcon 4 or 5? .it just for hiit workout
Either or! Whichever has best price/colorway you like
are these any good just for an everyday shoe ?
Yeah, they’re pretty comfy!
Nike reworking the shoe making it wider and better for wider feet makes me consider Nike again! I love how they are adding more wide feet alternatives. Time will tell if they keep it up!
Jake, do you happen to also have suggestions on running shoes? I am looking into them as I want to get into running
What's your normal running flow look like? How much weekly volume/training?
@@thatfitfriend Currently none besides maybe some short runs in WODS (and Murph prep tommorow). Lost 44 pounds and finally my body feels good enough to run with. I run really over pronounced. I would like to try and run 2 times a week and then run up to 5k.
@@thatfitfriendTried the Aics Kayano's but they were meh for me. I felt my feet cramp up really bad and my cheap 50$ nikes did run better.
I have very wide feet and the Hoka Cliftons are amazing. Somehow they found the sweet spot between stability and flexibility- and they come in wide width! They are way more cushioned than any other shoes I've bought in the last few years, but they are still pretty responsive.
@@123italiano321Hoka mach 5 makes a great running shoe. I'm a bigger guy and just started running in March and have been through 3 or 4 different running shoes and I felt like the Hoka Mach 5 is the best. And it comes in EE if u have a wide foot.
I still think the Nano X3 beats this model, can't wait for the metcon 9, do you think they're making major changes to the shoe? there was a big redesign between the 6 and 7 but not much between the 7 and 8. Finally, can we get more Maui content? haha
I hear ya, but I put these models into different training categories. For ex, I wouldn't wear the FM5 for the workouts I grab the Nano X3 for!
SAME. I've seen some renders and rumors on IG that suggest it's been reworked a lot, but I try not to think too deep into that content without seeing them first, you know? Would rather keep a clean slate opinion for when they actually drop.
LOL, more to come! Shooting some vlog content this weekend in Moab, Utah and will for sure feature the dood!
@@thatfitfriend glad you could make Moab happen. The fomo is real haha
What about leg pressing, say 400-500 lbs? Will it ruin the shoes? Hurt my legs?
Eh, should be okay, but you may notice some compression of the midsole at times. Won't ruin them, though
@@thatfitfriend Thanks! They really do seem versatile. Pretty too! Gonna give em a try!
Bro please reply bsr 4 or metcon 5
Metcon 5
Did your Metcons come with cardboard shoe insert?
They did not, but it could just be diff packing centers
How s it for rope climbs?
Not great. You'll shred their midsole using them for that context, imo!
@@thatfitfriend thank you very much! That s what I thought
Free metcon 5 or under amourt Comit tr 3
FM5!
I'm usually a 10.5 shoe size but in these it feels like a 10.5 has more room in the toe. I'm getting a 10
Do you use socks with this kind of sneaker?
I'll typically wear thin no-show socks with these. I have gone barefoot in them plenty of times, too!
Wearing shoes without socks? 🤢
Oh let me live
To each their own lol when I ran track almost every athlete was sock free in their spikes 😂🤷🏽♀️ just saying!
@@thawk2311 hahah, you tell em! Team no socks here, too
@@thawk2311still gross 🤮
@@AleX-zd6bimaybe u have athletes foot unlike us hahaha. Poor hygiene.
Why do companies insist on making CrossFit shoes ugly
HEY! You bite your tongue, the electric colorway is a classic!
@@thatfitfriend I came across as a bit harsh there. I do quite like the rad ones, saw some at CrossFit the other night. The Metcons are quite nice too
This is a bad review video. The color is so ugly.
Cool, bro
