- In this video we discuss further updates regarding Honda's recent stop sale notice for certain HRN216 and HRX217K walk behind lawn mowers. This is a disaster to say the least!
Here is a link to the hour meter I installed on my Honda lawn mower. It's easy to install, fairly inexpensive, and it helps you keep track of maintenance intervals.

Honda going out with a bang in the mower market, such a shame
It is a shame! Honda has always been notorious for quality, reliability, and longevity. Thanks for watching! Please like and share.
@@averagejoevideo9556 This is what happens when assembly workers are told their job is done.
@@testtesting2868 Sorry but your are very wrong as the Honda factory in North Carolina is not closing and no one is loosing their job. Part of the reason for Honda getting out of the lawnmower business is the big box stores are demanding electric mowers and Honda has no interest in electric lawnmowers. The factory has switched over to building Honda ATV's and several other products. The defect that caused this issue was a bad camshaft from an outside supplier and Honda is in the middle of correcting this issue on ALL of the recalled products/
@papajo7316 luckily for me, my honda mower wasn't recalled.
Hi, I've had the issue with my HRX537 (same as a HRX217 53cm=21inches) with a GCV200 engine here in Belgium. Bought the mower in january 2023, started mowing end of march I think. First time went okay. Second time, it wouldn't start and it yanked the cord from my fingers. Luckily I didn't get injured. Brought it back to the dealer. They contacted Honda and they received a complete new engine to replace the broken one. No problems since then, mowing twice a week for about 30 minutes. Few weeks after the replacement I received a letter from Honda saying the warranty was extended from 2 to 5 years.
My friend and I each bought one a few weeks ago. One at HD and one at Lowes. We both returned them even though we used them a couple times without issue. The local dealer suggested we get rid of them asap. Also the GCV200 camshaft repair is a huge job requiring total disassembly unlike the older models and I don’t want that kind of repair on a brand new mower. Ironically we both sold our old HRX mowers to get fresh ones before production stops. Mine was 18 years old and I sold it on Craigslist still working and starting on one pull. I want it back!
That’s crazy! I am sure you want your old one back. I would as well. I was told the GCV200 camshaft repair is a 2.5 hour job unless the technician has done lots of them. It’s my understanding that Honda only reimburses dealers 1.5 hours labor for the repair.
I am surprised you were able to return the one you bought at Lowe’s. I wonder if they aren’t making exceptions to the return policy at this point because of the stop sale. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe.
@@averagejoevideo9556 We did present a copy of the stop sell letter from Honda but they didn’t seem to care. The returns were quick and painless like they didn’t care. Interesting point you make though. I didn’t realize Lowes does have that policy that once you put gas in the mower you own it.
@@averagejoevideo9556 Its 2 hour pay time, can be done in 50 minutes.
I know it’s too late, but, buy mowers from dealerships and not Home Depot or Lowes.
I love my John Deere but the ones from HD or Lowes are shit.
I like my Bad Boy too and yet the models at Tractor Supply are much lower quality. Usually these manufacturers either make the cheapest possible thing for sale at big box stores or they don’t even bother and instead, sell the rights to put their brand name on some junk. I don’t know for sure if Honda did that here but the rule of thumb still applies.
@@CubNole not too late because I want to return my Toro before the 30 days is up. However no dealers will sell Honda right now due to the stop sale. I’ve been calling them and they all say they don’t know when or if they will be available again. The camshaft defect was happening regardless of big box or dealer.
How frustrating. Please continue to update,. Thank you.
I absolutely will! As soon as I hear anything, I will make another video. Please like and share so we get the word out!
By coincidence I was cutting very heavy grass this week for a friend who is unwell. The grass had not been cut for weeks. I used my friends mower a 21” easy start Honda model about 10 years old. The first cut was at the highest level with the front wheels raised off the ground. Not only did it cut the damp grass but it also bagged it. I had to go over it another 2. times but I was seriously impressed with this mowers performance and I have even cutting my own grass of over 1 acre for over 50 years
My honda that got in January of 2023 does exactly what have described I have not told Honda as of yet because I think there is no recorse to this but I have hope . Every time I go to start the lawn mower I pull the starting cord real slow to see if it will be easy or hard . If it is hard I pull to the point just past the hard spot than give it a pull sometimes it works and some times not .but I have taking the spark plug out but that doesn't always work either. My honda is a HRX 217 WITH BLADE STOP. AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO I HOPE WE CAN GET IT FIXED
Thanks. I have one of these mowers and it on its third season. No issues so far.
Thank You soooo much for the video!..im presently shopping around for a replacement for my 1992 Toro Re-cycler. Of course, Honda is at the top of my list!..Between bad reviews and the whole "quit makin 'em" thing, I'm thinkin?..maybe I'll just have another look at the new Toro models!...tyvm! 👍
Mine had this happen last weekend, brought it in on Tuesday and just learning this is more widespread
Glad I bought mine in 2017. I have done zero maintenance since buying it and it is still running strong.
It's amazing it still runs.
If you haven't changed the oil at all you are foolish and you are ruining the engine.
You should have changed the air filter a few times too and sharpening the blade once or twice a year is very helpful too.
If you haven't done any maintenance, the lack of oil changes will surely be it's demise.
@@milfordcivic6755 Probably. Still haven’t done maintenance and still going strong. I might change the oil after the next cut.
Had mine since 2014 without any problem.
I shopped for a mower 2-3 years ago. I wanted a Honda but I'm glad I went with a Toro Super Recycler now. It has been good so far.
I have the HRX217 GVC 200. I received a recall letter from Honda in late December 2023. Made appointment with Honda dealer for recall repair. They fixed the recall and was ready for pick-up in 1 day.
Thanks for keeping us informed. I bought a HRN216 for the vacation home last June. I replaced my old Cub Cadet at main home with a second HRN216 this February since they'll be stopping production. I registered them both per your advice last week. Crossing fingers that I won't be affected..
Not to worry, Honda will stand behind their product. Even if they are no longer in the lawnmower business, Honda is still in business. Do you really think that they will just ignore their lawnmower customers so you won't buy any of their other products like cars, motorcycles, ATV's, generators and so on? It's a bump in the road at a very bad time of the year but they are on it.
Sure, no problem. Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe.
Mine's 10 yrs old and the only trouble I had was a bad carburetor that needed replaced maybe 5 years back, and then the pull rope broke at the start of this season, but not this particular issue. Good info here though, thanks.
Sure, no problem! I am glad to hear yours has been good overall. Please like and subscribe.
Yes got the same problem … bought at Lowe’s too
Thanks for the video! I purchased my Honda HRX217K6HYAA on June 1, 2023. I have around 8-10 hours on the mower and have changed the oil. I have experienced two hard pull starts with one hard kickback. My dealer informed me of the no sale order and really didn’t have any information on resolution as Honda hasn’t provided any such details. My dealer doesn’t want me to use the mower because it could cause injury. I’m really not sure what I’m going to do but will likely pay for lawn service for the near term. The hard pull compression issue is intermittent and can probably be worked around. However, the kickback is no doubt dangerous and I can see how it could easily injure someone. Honda needs to step it up and take care of its customers! It sounds like there is already a basis for a class action suit. Let’s just hope Honda works diligently to provide a quick and lasting solution. With regards to regrets for buying a new Honda, I’m certainly disappointed in the lawnmower but waiting to see what Honda does before rendering a final judgment. Thanks again for keeping us informed! 9:26
fantastic. another thing to add to my anxiety closet.
Have the HRU216, love it, long as it's given a little push before engaging the drive in 1st or 2nd gear the gear box will appreciate it. Wouldn't buy anything that isn't made for commercial applications. It's disappointing to hear about these issues.
I placed an order with discount Honda parts online for a replacement camshaft, I was contacted by them within a couple of days requesting the serial number on my mower. After giving them the information I had the part within a week. Maybe give them a try....
I was at a dealer yesterday and he advised new cam part will be shipped by Honda and current inventory will then be available for sale after the new part is installed. He advised he should have a HRX217 ready for me by the end of August.
They haven't told us anything, so hes just pulling that out of his ass.
I have one Honda mower that’s been running flawlessly for 10 years never missed a beat & still on the job that one is the bagger I use near my large in ground pool. The other is 5 years old & is a side discharge model still on the job . No issues with either one . I change the oil once a year every year.
Mine had this weird problem having to do with piston slap when it first starts up, but it’s gone away now. But overall I feel pretty unsatisfied with this mower due to that and several other issues it has.
Interesting! I assume once running, it is fine. I could be wrong, but that almost sounds like a valve adjustment issue. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe.
What a coincidence…..
This happened to me on my last mow, thought it had seized.
And then I came across this today.
Thanks 🙏
Sure, no problem. I am sorry you experienced the issue, but I am glad I was able to shed some light on it for you. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe.
@@averagejoevideo9556 thats not a good reputation for home depot im waiting for kubota bring theres here to my kubota dealer here in canada
Mine is back at the dealer awaiting parts. Honda said they are to have a consumer specialist contact me in 3 days about part availability. That won't help me get it back in use this year. And will the repair fix it for good? 🤔
Would be the the compression release on the camshaft. It lowers the compression when you first pull it. Briggs has issues with thiers just years later.
I bought my honda mower about 4 years ago and I have gotten the kickback a few times in the last two years. I'm trying to devise a break away link for the pull handle that is strong enough to hold up when pull starting but will break if it snaps back hard.
Same issue with my HRN 216 after just a few times using it. Brutal!!!
This issue started in fall 2022. My new (6hr) 217HZA would not pull through or turn on the electric starter. Initially the dealer found the Key in the flywheel was partially cut but then after replacing that they found the Cam Was faulty. I was told I was number 158 in line for a new camshaft. I finally after two months called Honda Customer service , explained the problem and delay and they got with my dealer and moved me up to number 38. Even with the new cam the mower was not running correctly and when I went back to service they found another part on the engine had been installed incorrectly at the factory and could not be repaired. My dealer and Honda agreed that they should take back my old mower and give me a brand new mower. The new mower went in for the break-in service at 5.3 hours because I had some other concerns with the mower and they found it also had a bad camshaft and decompressor which this time was fixed in about ten days. Needless to say I have almost no confidence that this mower will continue to give me service with any degree of reliability and am waiting for Honda to make some type of permanent fix.
Bought my HRX in 2020. Electric start runs like a dream.
I purchased a HRX217K in March 2020 and experienced this exact problem in Nov 2022. Fortunately my mower was still under warranty and took it to the dealer at the time. It took them nearly 4 months to get it repaired, most of the time waiting for Honda to send parts. I can't imagine what the wait times are now.
I waited quite a while for my mower to be repaired. The difference is that I had less than 2 hours on it. I am sure the wait times are going to be long at this point. My guess is that parts availability will not be the issue as much as waiting in line at the repair shop.
@@averagejoevideo9556Another interesting point is that I checked the Honda website for affected models and my mower was not showing up as being in the range of serial #s being affected by the issue/recall. But clearly I had the same problem so this issue has been with them for awhile. It makes me think its more of a poor design/engineering issue than a batch of defective parts. So now I'm left to wonder like everyone else; will my repaired mower hold up?
Thanks!
Got a full refund from my dealer
Awesome! Thank you! I appreciate it.
I bought this Honda last summer after my 20 yr Snapper final reached it limit......I had 2 friends tell me Honda is the only choice for my next purchase....I bought the first one from Lowes last summer that was extremely difficult to start.....I returned it and went to Home Depot and experienced the same pull start problem with the next 2 Honda's. Home Depot was very understanding and provided me with a 3 unit. This unit has been working fine until last week when I started to again experience the stuck pull start. Heaven only knows what is in store going forward.
The only consolation is my 2 friends now understand why I was complaining about the honda lawnmower....all I constantly heard is how their units always started on the first pull.
I bought my HRX217 with the GCV200 engine a couple of years ago (2021: on my third summer with it). Hopefully mine was built before it became an issue as I've never had a problem with mine.
The one I have that had an issue was bought in roughly June 2023. Mine locked up this past weekend and I was actually able to pull through it being a 6’3” 300 lb guy, but the recoil starter would not rewind afterwards and had to take it into the shop where they fixed it, just need to go pick it up and try it out now. The dealer actually told me they were surprised that it didn’t happen sooner and that it’s incredibly wide spread in any of the newer Honda mowers and that they were glad they had the part in stock because it’s taking a while for replacements to come I
I did as well. I haven't had any kickback issues, but the pilot jet on the carb gets clogged easily and the cog setup on the rear drive needs service serveral times a season.
Haven't had any issues except for the rear wheel drive assembly needing occasional cleaning and lube. I have the hka mower with the GCV170 and been in service almost 3 seasons.
I have a 4 year old gcv160 auto choke and it's a well made beast. My 8 year old was able to start it and run it,
Very well done video
I was looking at buying one. NUTS!!!
I had a Honda Harmony years ago and loved it.
Nuts, Nuts, Nuts
It’s crazy! But, I am confident they will resolve the issue, it’s just a matter of how long it will take. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
Being a retired vehicle maintenance manager for heavy road vehicles, I've seen this OEM type issue many times. Typically, the OEM hides the issue and will either use the same defective part as an expedient repair measure, or upgrade the defective part once without proper testing, only to come out with a proper third part rendition after testing that actually fixes the issue. You will see this when the same part comes out with upgraded part numbers like a suffix or prefix with A,B,C, or superseding dates. I'm sure Honda is scrambling, but I'm betting the first fix, will probably not be the last and also, Honda is probably giving up on the lawn biz due to industry conversion to electric which is another can of worms!
I have had a Craftsman/ Briggs&Stratton mower for over 25 years. I use it once a week from April to October, I’ve never changed the oil, never changed the plug, never changed the air filter. It just sits all winter and starts on the first pull in Spring. I do use fuel stabilizer before I put it away. I’ve always wanted a Honda and figured when my Craftsman inevitably dies that I’ll get one. This is very disappointing.
I have one of these. I bought mine in June, so far no issue. Mine is part of the recall. I'm hoping I can continue to use it until the mowing season ends in another month before I drop it off to my Honda service center.
Hopefully, you will be able to finish the mowing season before getting the recall work done.
@@averagejoevideo9556
When the failure occurs on restart of the mower, exactly what happens?
I'd like to avoid injury.
when you are mentioning that we would need to bring the mower to "the dealer", what exactly does that mean if we bought it at home depot. I'm only aware of honda car dealers, but didn't know if there is some other kind of dealership?
If it starts to get hard to start expect it to fail any minute
This is really a very big deal and serious problem for Honda and dealers
They will not give out any information or when but some dealers think a year 😢
Exactly! The minute you experience hard starting...it's more than likely only going to get worse. It's a very serious problem and it's very sad for Honda. Thank you for watching! Please like and share.
I needed to replace my 25 year old Troy Bilt by the way it still works but finding OEM parts forget it. So I looked around and went to a local dealer that sells commercial equipment. I ended up with a Honda hrc216 so far after 3 years had no problems not saying something can’t happen. The thing that really gets me though is it’s only 3 years old and I will be in the same boat as I’m with my old mower but much sooner. I keep my equipment for a very long time snowblower 30 years old leaf blower and weed eater all gas and two cycle 25 years plus so it very upsetting to find out Honda dropping the power line.
This reminds me of the problem Honda had recently with its 1.5 liter turbo engines and oil dilution. They were clearly more interested in sweeping the issue under the rug as much as possible rather than customer satisfaction. For what it's worth, I bought one of the HRX217K6HYAA mowers in April. It has received a fair amount of use during the time I have owned it. (1.5 acres of grass. Mowed 1-2 times per week) I haven't had the problem...yet. 🤞But I NEVER shut my mower off when I mow the yard. (On my model, the mower can continue to run while the blades are stationary.) When I shut my mower off, it doesn't get restarted until at least 4 days later. Maybe that is a way to prevent this issue from occurring until Honda hopefully issues a recall on these mowers. Of course, having said this my mower with probably crap out the next time I use it! 😩
Thank you for the information and thanks for watching! Please give this video a like!
I thought the same thing about the 2019-20 CRV Oil Dilution issue .... Honda futzed around with the computer and said that would fix it ..... ummmm NO....
No heat in the winter .......Ummmm Normal ????? WtF....
Grabbed a 20 Palisade fast.
Honda Bullet Proof Quality...
It has been going on for years . Sprained my fingers on a honda pull start . It was a failed valve rocker arm . Hurt like hell for days .
I was planning on buying the top Honda walk behind two years ago but couldn't find it locally, I ended up going electric with an EGO, and although not perfect I've been fairly satisfied so far.
Bought a HRN216 with the GCV170 from Home Depot last year. From the very first pull of the recoil starter rope, with the very first addition of oil, with its very first tankful of clean ethanol free gas, the mowers idlecwaa crap. So bad, I called Honda and reported the issue. The runaround was incredible until I informed them I was a small engine mechanic of 20+ years and have owned several models of Honda mowers. They instructed me to take ittocthe local certified Honda repair shop. I was shocked to hear that I would have to pay a significant amount to have them look at the machine. I asked about the warranty. They stated if I didn't buy it from them they would not honor the warranty and I would have to seek reimbursement from Honda. This year, I bought a Craftsman M320 from Lowes. Best damn mower I've operated in years. The Honda was a waste of $700+ dollars. You think Honda cares? Think again. You think the Home Depot cares? Think again. They all care about one thing, profits, profits, and more profits. Don't rvrr fool yourself into believing they care. They don't give a shit about you or I. $700+ dollars is what they make in a millisecond. End of rant. Be wise, not fooled. Good day.
I have an HRN 215 with less than two hours run time. Very hard to pull start. And I’m 6’1 215
Perhaps people posting their serial numbers along with if they have experienced the problem and an estimate of hours on the machine we could help define the range of possible failure.
I bought this exact mower on or about July of 2021, it's displayed none of these issues. My only complaint is it leaks oil around the front timing cover area and the side at the base where the oil filler tube attaches to the block.
Cant get it fix under warranty?
I bought my Honda mower last year and the mower started surging. I took it to a dealer, (bought it at Lowes.). They found gravel in the gasoline carbonator. I paid them and so far this year, no problems.
My cam shaft assembly broke. It would not crank. I did hit a small stump, but it ran for a few months before it quit. I got another motor.
Interesting. I am surprised they didn’t just replace the camshaft. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe!
Ok. Hoping they get new cam out soon 😊
Me too! I just wonder if the cams they used to make repairs prior to this point in time are simply the exact same part that failed to start with. Thanks for watching. Please like and share!
Lowes refunded me the money for the first one that had the issue. The other one is running great, they made some changes by removing the throttle control and blade stop. The one I I have now cranks first time every time with the blades engaged.
I'm a Honda small engine fanboy and have a Honda engine on a Craftsmen walk behind push mower. I was disappointed last year when I went to buy a lawnmower for our son because I could not get one with a Honda engine and ended up with a Briggs. Given what is going on looks like we dodged a bullet.
I've already performed this recall on a 216 at the deere dealership i work at (also a Honda power equipment dealer) the detent on the cam gets wore down and gets stuck in compression mode and it's quite the task to replace it you have to tear the engine down to the crank and then have to reseal the whole thing
Do you happen to know how many labor hours Honda pays for under warranty? Also, how many hours does it actually take to perform the service? Thanks for watching!
@averagejoevideo9556 no I have no idea I booked 6 hours on it still waiting to see what they're gonna cover. What struck me is once finished I did the math and I could've installed a new engine with new camshaft and saved honda 200 but the bulletin states I must replace the camshaft regardless and log my hours im not really aloud to state which ones are covered but you will get a letter in the mail or email if your mower falls in the recall it'll be interesting to see how all this pans out but it's a big deal for honda if thousands are effected because it runs over half the price of the machine just to fix this factory mess up.
Am I correct in understanding that the problem could also happen with the model with electric start. Joe, I have the same model as you except it has the electric start.
Yes, absolutely! It is my understanding from those with the electric start model that the compression is so strong, the electric start motor cannot turn the engine over. And, if you keep trying you could end up burning up the electric start motor. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
I commented on your last video about this, it’s such shame, I paid over 1100.00 dollars for this mower and literally have under 6 hours on it. It feels like your arm wants to rip off when pulling it. So much for the electric start option I bought. Can’t use that either.
I bought a small Yard Man mower from Northern Tool with a Honda engine about 20 years ago for mowing a ditch I cant get my rider into. It starts ever time. The problem I have with it is the deck is about to rust out. It gets used about twice each month and I didn’t clean the deck out. I’m thinking about just putting the engine on a different frame. The newer models have no choke and harder to start. Improvements aren’t always needed……….
I've got a 2020 HRX217 which thankfully does not have this issue but my old Honda GCV190 mower did. I ran it without a blade (never do this) which partially sheared the crankshaft keyway on the flywheel side. The kickback was brutal which caused me to develop a habit of pulling the starter rope with only two fingers instead of pulling it with a closed fist so if it does ever kickback, it'll rip the rope out of my hands instead of ripping off my fingers.
only problem i have is the bolt that the blade adapter on has worked itself loose 3 times in less than a year even with loctite the last 2 times
Mine was bought 5/05/2022. Hopefully I won’t have camshaft issues. So far I have around 12 hours on it and have not.
Hopefully you will not have the camshaft issue. My thoughts are if you purchased it in May 2022, it more than likely was manufactured at the beginning of the calendar year or perhaps the end of the previous year. I doubt you will experience this issue.
Thanks so much for that Info. What Model may I ask? I have an HRN216. S/N 198 2853. 7 pulls still good
I love my Honda HRX217, I’ve had three of them. I was going to buy a new one to have after they stop making them. Guess I won’t do that now 😢
I have a Honda HR214 that I bought in 1987! Still runs great. I guess they don’t make them like they used to.
Good reason to hold on to my 90s Made in USA flathead Briggs powered Murray and Made in USA flathead Tecumseh powered Craftsman
I have a 2000 briggs and a 2000 Tecumseh still going strong. 1st pull start on both. Great engines.
The one i bought in may of 22 has battery start. So i guess i wouldn't realize or see the problem. Going to start using the pull start and see how it goes.
I bought mine in August 2022 and it has the problem.
Actually, you would be able to notice the issue. From what others have said with the electric start model, the starter is unable to turn over the engine. So, you should be able to tell. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
Thanks for the heads up. You got a new subscriber.
@@averagejoevideo9556, exactly. You will know it if your engine has a defective camshaft, electric start or not.
I just bought an HRX 200cc from Home Depot for $749. Home Depot did not tell me about no refund if you put gas in it. They said 30 days period. Did they withhold key information? It is still in box, should I return it? Does this happen also on the GVC170 engine?
Mine revs weird for about 5 to 10 minutes after starting, I’m about to call and find out what’s up.

Terrible consumer laws if not fit for purpose retailers should be obliged to accept return regardless of fault.
100% agree! In some instances, a retailer could knowingly sell a product that is a problem just to get rid of it. But, I don’t believe they are required to remove it from sale unless there is a stop sale or recall notice.
@@averagejoevideo9556 where I live this is law. If item is not fit for purpose retailer must accept return.
Let me go and do an extra oil change now on my 10 year old mower... Had no idea they were stopping production.
Honda had such a wonderful reputation! Why now, all of a sudden, are they unable to build a quality product anymore❗️
We all know they are exiting the lawnmower business, but why destroy their reputation in these final days ❓
AverageJoe, on your previous video, I mentioned that I could get around the problem by engaging the blade lever while starting. Have you tried that? Granted, it’s just a workaround and not a fix and no excuse for the problem.
You did mention that and honestly I completely forgot about it. I will have to try that. Thanks for the possible work around.
@@averagejoevideo9556 Very interested if this works. In the market and really want one of these hondas (form liquidation store), until I found out about this issue.
I do the same, engage the blade lever. Have not had issue since I started doing this.

You are creating more rotating mass...
thus the "flywheel" effect is increased and the kickback minimised???
Would you guys recommending buying a used older Honda or holdout? Are there certain older model years for Honda mowers that are better then the current line up?
If you keep your eyes on Craiglst and on the curbs around your neighborhood, you may find one rather cheap ($125-$250+) or even free (That is IF you are mechanically inclined.)
I picked up a 4-year-old HRX2174VLA for $300 at a pawn shop (They had 2 of them and I kick myself for not getting the second one, also) It has been a jewel with only a couple of issues that I had to address. Mainly a good carb cleaning and a new "Thermowax" for the auto-choke. It's the nicest cutting mower that I've ever owned.
A few months ago, I had an HRR216 given to me for free. It needed some work but there is nothing wrong with it that just about anyone can easily repair. I have a few more items to install and it will be restored. The only engine issue was, once again, the carb. This one was beyond cleaning, so I replaced it. The engine runs great. I've spent roughly about $75 in parts and all I have to do is finish installing them, if I ever get the time.
So, I guess that I'd recommend it. I personally will get any that happen to come my way.
Ok I have an older K5 from 2018 , and I start and stop a lot on my hill of death, but the hydrostatic transmission pulls me up the hills .... I still need breaks...
On a hot restart sometimes it just seems like I need a little extra effort on the pull, but there has never been a strong snapback . I've got a little single stage Toro snowblower that does that, and if you're not ready you could get hurt ....
So I understand the danger.
Until the fix , or it blows up, what if you pull it to start and quickly let go....???
Dont guide it back down .....???
Another guy who said he starts his with the blade engaged .....??? Could it be that the extra drag weight would create enough change in the faulty cam to get the thing started without snapping back ....????
It might be experiment time, but I know when I get the recoil snap back on the snowblower, I just let the damn thing go anymore ....Lol.... ! 😳
One more thing .... ( ray of hope ) ....From my understanding, Honda doesn't make these engines .... theyre manufactured in China, im not sure Taiwan or mainland.
Now I might be wrong on this, But I have a Chinese, Honda Clone engine on that Toro snowblower I spoke of earlier .....
These engine , mostly the 160 & 190cc , should still be available since other manufacturers use them.
Is this problem showing up in those engines as well ....???
My reasoning is, if Honda can get the cam corrected at the assembly level, where ever it is, it would be a lot quicker and easier to slap another engine on it than to repair the internal cam.... ???
Thoughts ....???
Unfortunately, this issue is with the new GCV170 and GCV200 engines. It is not with the older GCV160 and GCV190 engines. The parts for these newer engines are much more pricey. For example, a recoil for an older GCV is about $10 while a recoil for a new GCV is $30.
I see what you saying about swapping engines rather than sourcing parts, causing repair delays, and ultimately paying dealers for the repair. And, with your idea, the assembly line would correct the issue quickly. In theory, this would be more efficient, but I don’t know about the cost. I am sure Honda is building engines much cheaper than we realize. Thank you for your insight and for watching. Please like and subscribe for updates!
Hey, my Toro mower has the same motor as the Honda! Why!
No take it back to Lowe’s! I took mine back with 30 hours on it with gas and oil. I asked to speak with the manager and he said this is the first one he had with the problem. Got all my money back! I would try it!
Interesting! Ironically, I spoke to a manager at Lowe’s in my area and he told me unfortunately he could not accept my mower for return. I wonder if possibly they are now making an exception to the return policy due to the Honda issue.
Any updates? I went to my local dealer and stated they are still unable to sell , just said they put them on a pallet and put them in the storage shed.
Unfortunately, no updates yet. As soon as I hear anything, I will be making an update video.
I would consider myself a lawn care enthusiast because I mow every three days. I bought my HRX217 in 2019 and I remember feeling bummed out due to hearing about the "newer" versions coming out later that year. I thought about returning my mower to buy the new version but I did not. Best decision ever, this is year four and I love my Honda mower! I am sorry to hear people are experiencing problems with their mowers.
I TOO, got my Honda HRR in 2020ish, & I love mine! 👍
Until you mow your lawn everyday, you don't qualify
@@mracer8I mow mine every couple of hours.
I continuously mow my lawn. Im typing this reply while Im mowing! I have my wife add gas while I'm in motion mowing to get the absolute minimum grass growth.
@@AllThingsFabrication you should try to get 2 self mowing lawnbot , they can continuously mowe the lawn 24/7 rain or shine. Work great and is the future of 24hr lawn mowing tread.
To keep it short take apart the entire engine and take apart the cam gear. The swing arm hole in the plastic has a TINY burr. Get a smooth shaft smaller than the hole and wrap it with 600 grit sand paper and slowly start working at the hole until the swing arm moves freely problem fixed.
i thought this video would get into physically the problem? like you just did... i wanted to see a disassembed defective engine to see whats up?
@@joeyjennings9548yeah so many videos on this issue but no one has addressed the actual defect in the cam gear. I'm sure you're better off fixing the original cam gear instead of replacing it with one that might have the exact same defect.
I had 2hours on this similar unit. Same exact symptoms. Took it to a Honda approved mechanic as directed by Honda and they placed the entire blame on me said I had used stagnant fuel. I argued that the fuel was 2 weeks old, and mower only had 2 hours on it or less. Repair cost would be 429$ and they couldnt guarantee that more items would be needed. Luckily I bought home depot insurance on it and they cut me a check and told me to keep the mower. Not sure I want to buy another honda after this experience.
That's ridiculous they would blame it on bad fuel. At least you had the Home Depot insurance. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe.
Alternatives? The only mower I found is the Toro 21" commercial grade with Honda motor, blade brake, aluminum deck. But it sells for $2000.00.
Around here, if you bought it at a big box store, the dealer wouldn’t touch it. They tell you to take it to where you bought it.
Sorry to hear that, my Honda mower has been working great for over 10 years and always starts with the first pull. I can hold it in my hand afterwards and it doesnt pull back unless I release it. Hope Honda does the right thing ASAP. I am watching closely even though I am not impacted.
Dude, your purchase was 10 years ago, maybe they have changes things, DUR!
Joe,
I see where a reader in your earlier column stated that Honda Australia had issued a recall notice and had specific numbers for
Both the 216 and 217 models starting late 2022 until April 2023.
IF, this is true, do you see this happening soon in the US?
Thank you
That’s a great question! I have been patiently waiting for more details regarding the US market, but unfortunately nothing yet. As soon as I hear anything regarding specific serial numbers I plan to share. Please like and subscribe! Thanks for watching!
Damn I was thinking about buying one of these mowers.
Is the GCV200 now made in China like the 160 and others? Still the mowers are "assembled in USA"
I had two of the Honda mower with the plastic deck. On both, the front wheels become towed out.
Mine too
I also spoke with our local Honda rep, he said reps notified dealers end Oct 2022 that Honda would cease sales of all gas lawn mowers by September 2023, but parts will remain available for 10 years as required by law. Honda did not do this due to faulty mowers, the issue with pull start is isolated to certain build batches. Honda is shifting into electric lawn mowers at some point but when has not been determined.
Thanks for the info! The last I heard, Honda was not entering the electric/battery powered mower market. I hope they do because they will more than likely be a leader. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe.
@@averagejoevideo9556 electric is all consumers want these days which isn’t good for me. So far I’ve not had these problems, but I bought mine in 2021 and it’s a different model than yours, it’s a HRX217HYA. My local Home Depot once told me they sell 30 electric mowers to one gas. Nobody wants gas anymore…people love push button start, especially women. Apparently Honda customers of their self-propelled mower love that it’s electric which is why Honda may enter the electric mower market.
Even though they are still available and warranted, is it worth buying? No longer in production means lack of parts availability as well.
It is my understanding that Honda plans to provide parts for at least 10 years.

That's good to know. I've been having issues with my Poulan mower with a Kohler engine. Known issues with the choke mechanism with those. Looking for someone better. If I could clone my grandfather's Jacobson mower from the 70s I would be happy.
What we have here is "a possible Class Action Lawsuit !" Thank for the update.
Sure, no problem. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
I purchase hrn model at beginning of year and haven’t had this problem 🤞
Does anyone know if this affects any mower with a Honda engine or just this particular line built by Honda?
Im pretty sure its just a bad batch from what i heard. Seems like its just the most expensive version HRX217HYA
Recycled my purchased 2016 Honda 21" 190 cc Nextite plastic body self-propelled mower and then discovered Honda's mower recall! The point I will make is rusted-to-failure control parts required two repair shop $100+ costs and the heavy weight of the Honda with narrow tire treads has made very pronounced permanent groves in my 1/3 acre lawn. Now own a Toro 163 cc Recycler.
I brought one end of may and i just opened the box now to use it for the first time tomorrow. I got it from lowes. you think i can return it?
Honestly, others have commented that Lowe’s accepted their return even after being used. Possibly if you speak to a manager they will grant an exception, especially given the stop sale. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
@@averagejoevideo9556 Thanks! The manager at my local lowes returned it! now i dont know which mower to get!?! ive liked and subscribed :)
What model?
Joe,
Any updates on the updates? Is that light at the end of the tunnel an oncoming train? Any hope in the near future for the release of serial numbers, corrected cams?
Sorry, I still don’t have any further updates. I will keep everybody posted.
@@averagejoevideo9556 Australia just issued a recall for these mowers, hopefully, USA to follow soon. You can google Australia Honda mower recall and it should pop up
Joe,
I see in your first post,a month ago, that a reader recently listed a recall in Australia and listed the numbers for both the 216 and 217 models . These numbers involved build dates from late 2022 to April 2023. Any sign that is going to happen with US models in the near future?
Thank you
Can you bump start it
My employer has three of these mowers, & I have used them for almost three years & have never had this issue. Hope that it never happens.
what a shame. i highly debated buying a new honda to replace a 90's model but it doesnt seem to be slowing down any time soon and i doubt its the same quality
Bought mine 14 years ago when they where good, runs like a top
