Very interesting - I will keep an eye on this one - I definitely prefer the reel mowing - my problem is debris from the trees in my yard , pretty sure the reel will get stuck
Looks promising for sure! At some point, it would be great if you could do a video that scores certain key features so that we can determine which is best for a particular application.
Nice finish to the lawn, navigation can now be perfected to be wireless and GPS-free, but the most significant downside to the concept (reel mower) is the same as the old push mower. The blade is more or less permanent - requires sharpening, and any dings or dents will affect the cut. Dings or dents from branches, twigs, small undetected obstacles, gravel or rocks, even borders or bits of mulch. And these become more likely with greater frequency of cutting - you almost need to do yard policing prior to each mow (a brief wind storm leaves my yard covered with debris from surrounding trees). If you trash the blade(s) on a Segway or Husqvarna, or if they dull (my Segway blades last about 80 hours), you take a couple of minutes and replace them I like the idea, and look forward to further advances, but fear this may be a short branch on the automower evolutionary tree.
With many mowers entering this market segment, it will be interesting to see which survive beyond the next five years. Competition is good for the consumer. The R1 has a very nice cutting system. The use of Lidar is an interesting choice. Nice demo on a NICE lawn. However, straight lines are very important.
I am happy to see a video on this new product that is not the glowing marketing material. I pinged Oasa several questions on the Kickstarter page, but I'll share them here if you have any thoughts and can share comments. I live in Florida. It is HOT here. We have Saint Augustine grass, which is much thicker and broader than the grass you have in the video. Can the R1 handle high temperatures and "tropical" sun? Can the R1 handle thick St. Augustine grass? St. Augustine grass grows up, meaning that where it may have been installed nearly flush with sidewalks or driveways, as it matures over the years, it will have a root bed above the concrete creating a "step", can the R1 accommodate that and not get "stuck"? Without a GPS, how does the R1 auto-map the perimeter with no fences to delineate the separation between properties? Lastly, what kind of end-user maintenance program is needed, and cost of parts, such as the reel, wheels, and tires?
Cutting st Augustine will be fine. This is a very high quality reel. As for maintenance and the long term. The question is how to grind the reel every e years and how that will be resolved. I don't have an answer for that. In regards to the borders the lidar computer it all by separating shapes and patterns and colors. No real issues there. Lidars been used in homes for many years. Not a new technology. You can indeed program neighboring property lines by using the manual controls.
I think you need to talk about the smoothness of the yard. I am in a rental and the yard is bumpy. I would like to understand the results when the yard has bumps.
reely just depends on your lawn goals really. this is for lawn fanatics that want a clean clean cut and can afford time to make sure debris is off the lawn. they're both fantstic for what they are.
Since you do these reviews all the time have you ever done a comparison for 2024 to see which is best.? One of my favorite RUclips channels is vacuum wars because he very thoroughly tests out every vacuum that he can get his hands on.
I am at the edge of buying the kickstarter on this one... But I am very unsure how it handles branches and so on from trees? Obviusly I try to keep the grass free, but with 2 huge trees there is always small branches after the sligtest wind... 🤔 And what about them leaves?
I pay a boy to mow our grass. He leaves trails where his tires roll over and smash the grass and then it pops up after he leaves. I can't wait to get one of these and have nice clean evenly cut grass.
Need more updates like you talked about at the end. Compare this to Luba 2 you just reviewed so I can see which to buy next year, I just put down tiftuf Bermuda and it’s going to need to be mowed OFTEN.
I've owned 6 generations of robotic mowers over the last 15 years. With 4 wheel drive and camera/GPS navigation they finally are worth buying and don't get stuck all the time. The Luba 2 is great. That said, the blades on the Luba 2 leave something to be desired. The reel on this is interesting.
Good video! Very informative and detailed. I have some questions which you might be able to answer: OASE says the reel blades need to me changed every 3 - 4 years. At 2:24 min you say the reel needs a "major sharpening". These information sound contrary to me. Do you know if it needs to be changed or if sharpening is enough by know? To be honest I don't know why it should be sharpened if it's doing that itself. If the reel needs to be changed, do you know the costs of it and if you can do it by yourself?
Morning! Great questions. The reel itself has a "lifetime" of three years. What that means is the reel needs to be ground down / sharpened by a machine to get rid of the nicks and ruts in the reels. As of now the company has been unclear on how this can or will be accomplished, so I don't have a clear answer. I commonly take my reels to a service center or I send them back to the manufacturer. My opinion, which I don't work for them, is it'll be the same way in the end. The regular maintenance sharpening is called back lapping which you'll do at home running a software sequence at home to run the reel backwards over the bed knife.
@@pestandlawnginja Three years on the reel cylinders is a very weak lifespan. Back lapping is fine for general maintenance, but grinding and bed knife replacement will still be necessary. What type of bearings and seals are used?

Question 1: Is the Lithium Battery replaceable? Question:2 I don't have a fenced in yard on one side, but a public sidewalk. Will the R1 use the vision system to detect the boundary or will I have to teach it?
Battery is replaceable. The vision is designed to identify grass borders. Training thr machine on boundaries happens before the cutting process by mapping the areas
@@phillipklaiber3986 most likely regarding the comment, that you really cannot let any small objects lay on the floor like small sticks, etc. I have this in my backyard and this lawnmower would not work for my purpose.
Just wondering how well it handles the overlap cutting on the edges of your lawn, hover mode? Obviously the driveway and sidewalks are no problem but I have a strip that runs along a curb at the street.
I have a couple of small cliffs and also some edging stones that drop down a few inches where the lawn is on the high side and pavement is on the low side. Is it smart enough to not fall down? If not, I have a lot of landscaping to do 😂
its smart enough to detect where the grass is. my suggestion would be to program it about 7" away from those areas so it doesn't get stuck. or you'd need to bring in dirt and level it out.
I have a separate front yard and backyard. Can this unit charge up in the backyard, cut the backyard, go down a 30ft driveway, then pull up onto my front lawn and cut it? Does it stop the blades while traveling over a driveway surface?
Heya, Ginja! I'm a bit unclear about how it finds edges if there isn't a fence or some "object" above cut level. Will it initially try mowing over your driveway, and have to be set for exclusion zones? Or, to include areas that are a different color, from bare spots...? Well don vid, explained a lot. Gonna watch how this mower progresses!
great question! The best way i can describe it is the machines color coordinate the grass to identify it. so it sees and identifies boundaries. In the past I've tried to program all the mowers to mow past the driveway and they won't do it due to the obstacle recognition. they always stop short because they receive an alert its not grass and stays in the boundary. Other than that, during the setup process you're telling them where the boundaries are, so everything outside that zone is essentially set as a no go zone. As far as bare spots goes...... it does mess with a lot of mowers.
Im curious as to whats gonna stop someone from stealing this. "Sirens" are great but i wouldnt feel at ease until it has some gps and data.. Why not also use it to mow. We have porch pirates ..this things even easier to just grap.
same tech as in cell phones. devices are rendered useless. back in the day theft of cell phones world wide was high. these days its much lower because people understand they can't use it and it'll be tracked back to them.
I have the razor blade style mower, you have to choose a taller blade setting if not level, I’m able to go about 35 mm in height with my lumpy lawn. Don’t know if that helps.
@@benfuct5880 Thanks. My rotary mower can go down to 1.5in but it seems to scalp the loan in a bunch of areas. Not sure if this one will have a better chance
when you say disc mowers i'm assuming you're talking about the rotary style razor blade mowers. the difference is about 10db. still too low for anyone to complain about. its no where near a traditional rotary style mower engine noise. if i were to guess it runs 60db to 65db.
Did you try to hang the edge over the top of the curb? Or is that too tight of a tolerance? I'm bummed about no night cutting, I must admit. For my .02 they should make it cut lower and forget the 2"and higher. Reel cut people are accustomed to paying more for this type of cut. You can't be all things to all people. I'm anxious for the release to the masses.
with every update it gets soo close. this last update is was 2" to 4" off the curb and on the edge cutting it was hovering my concrete border and getting it all.
I always prefer the cut a reel mower gives, but this is way too big for my garden. The biggest problem I have is that it takes longer to take out my mower and put it away than it does to actually mow. I want to move to daily cutting to mulch, but there's no way I'm doing that myself, so a robot mower seems the way to go. Have you come across any that are suited to tiny lawns - around 25m2? Don't really care what it cuts with could be a strimmer if it gets the job done.
So can you manually create a boundary where there's no fence or concrete? I need to set a boundary where my grass meets the neighbor on both sides of my front lawn, which I can't imagine auto map can figure out. I can tell it where my grass ends, right?
i wonder how well this would work on thick florida st. augustine grass. these new robot mowers are popping up alot lately. i don't think i'm going to be a beta user, but if it makes to mass production and gets real reviews from any users then we can get one, i'd rather pay more for a proven product than being a tester.
seems like a high chance of theft. can you elaborate on the defense? will it lock out the next user? seems like you would need a front and backyard for most properties
the anti theft is still being integrated. I would anticipate gps geo fencing, alarm, app notifications when its outside the area. What i would like to see is for them to get into the camera and take pictures and video actively so it can be referenced later. and to answer your question, the apps and emails and mac addresses of the devices are bound. so it would not be usable for anyone else.
Is the reel replaceable by users? Backlapping isn't a permanent solution, so how do users get the reel re-ground? If this mower uses backlapping, is it correct to assume that this reel comes from the factory with a relief grind? Many reel mowers do not come with a relief grind and therefore should not be backlapped.
that is a great question and is yet to be determined by the company. I agree that backlapping isn't a permanent solution. the machine i received was ground from the factory. truth be told i'm not a fan of backlapping. but i understand it has it's place. all great questions.
how do you feel about a mulching mower for lawn quality. and like you said you would still need an additional mower for the spring and fall scalps and if it gets to long. a
@@pestandlawnginja Thank you for the fast answer!😊 Another question: Our yard got multizones and is in total around 1200m². Is this size possible with one charge or is it to big for the mower?
This would be perfect for my parents, but they have a back corner that gets really soggy after it rains. So soggy that the zero-turn they have not can't go back there. Any concerns using this in that soggy area?
so is there a gps tracker on that mower ie "find my mower"? I know of one in somebodys front yard with a low picket fence that i'm thinking of borrowing...
Depends on the height. The highest section I have is an inch and it performs well. Little bit of scalping considering the height difference but the mower doesn't get stuck
@@pestandlawnginja that's my biggest issue with these. I know it's saving time but if they expect it to run 3-5 times a week that's a lot of babysitting the gates. It would be nice if it came with a doggy door like gate, ideally that opened when it came near.
it all just depends on your wants. both great products but they're different one from another. i love the reel mowing and my lawn is very well kept. if you have a kept lawn and can keep debris off this is fantastic.
Hmm…I just lost my money with a simular project called Heisenberger H1 lawnmower on Kickstarter. So never again…although I like your video presenting this mower.
How does it handle crossing driveways to mow another side of the yard? I’ve always wondered how these robot mowers handle vanity strips too. No one ever shows them crossing a sidewalk and mowing narrow vanity stripes next to the road.
Great question. crossing driveways is not an issue. When your mapping you'll create a pathway. these pathways need to be 3ft or more on average. I have one pathway with one of the machines i'm using that is almost 60ft long. Love the feedback. I am currently growing a section of grass across my driveway so i'll be able to show the process as you're requesting.
@@pestandlawnginja I’m loving the robot review series you’ve been doing. At some point, it’d be really great to see you rate all the best robot mowers and give some recommendations. Creating a pathway is the technical term. Blade does indeed hault and it follows the programmed pathway to the other zone. Works great
how would you compare this to the Terramow?
can't tell you all my secrets hahaha I'll drop a video soon about the difference between all of these mowers and what categories they do best in.
@@pestandlawnginja Please the sooner the better, or both robots will be finished on kickstarter.
How many sq ft per mower charge?
Looks super awesome! This one's not for me though My lawn is not near nice enough to have a reel mower 😂
Oh no! Lets fix that!
It appears to work just like robot vacuums, which are very accurate and reliable at avoiding obstacles and no-go zones.
The 6000ft2 is a problem. My yard would require 2 or 3 of these. How would they work together?
I'm not entirely sure how it would be integrated just yet. Great question
I would bet they can't work together. You would need two to three of them and create separate work areas for each.
If you can't create separate work areas, this technology is way behind.
My yard is not level . Will it work ?
I have the razor blade style mower, you have to choose a taller blade setting if not level, I’m able to go about 35 mm in height with my lumpy lawn. Don’t know if that helps.
@@benfuct5880 Thanks. My rotary mower can go down to 1.5in but it seems to scalp the loan in a bunch of areas. Not sure if this one will have a better chance
yes, you'll have to mow at the higher settings, that would be the main difference.
I suppose the Oasa R1 makes a higher noise level. How much dB does it create in comparison to other disc mowers?
when you say disc mowers i'm assuming you're talking about the rotary style razor blade mowers. the difference is about 10db. still too low for anyone to complain about. its no where near a traditional rotary style mower engine noise. if i were to guess it runs 60db to 65db.
You know the island between the sidewalk and the street can it mow that?
@luckspell yes! You can plan zones Without any issues including parking strips
Can I seriously use this on my Saint Augustine grass if it goes up to 4 inches?
I don't see why not. its got a great clean cut.
Why do you need reel and bed knife at 4"?
@@phillipklaiber3986 at Augustine grass. Needs to be tall.
Do any of these robot mowers have any integration with other apps? Could you schedule mows around when the irrigation system ran?
it will be integrated into an alexa or amazon type. i'm just not sure which as of now.
How loud is it? The only way I could see using this and not having it stolen is if I ran it super early in the morning.
It's about 65db. Not very loud
2nd generation? Does this mean there's a 2nd one coming out as well?
They're constantly making it better before they ship the first batch.
does it always need WiFi connection?
does this work if the yard is not fenced?
Yes! You can manually setup the boundaries where is not obvious for the mower
Don't really care what it cuts with could be a strimmer if it gets the job done.
to be honest there all pretty similar in size. your area is very small for sure.
So can you manually create a boundary where there's no fence or concrete? I need to set a boundary where my grass meets the neighbor on both sides of my front lawn, which I can't imagine auto map can figure out. I can tell it where my grass ends, right?
yes!!!! you can take the controls and manually create a boundary and no go zones.
@@pestandlawnginja awesome. Thanks!
i wonder how well this would work on thick florida st. augustine grass. these new robot mowers are popping up alot lately. i don't think i'm going to be a beta user, but if it makes to mass production and gets real reviews from any users then we can get one, i'd rather pay more for a proven product than being a tester.
Good feedback
seems like a high chance of theft. can you elaborate on the defense? will it lock out the next user? seems like you would need a front and backyard for most properties
the anti theft is still being integrated.
Very cool, but would you be willing to spend your own money on this type of robotic mower?
I would. As I explained in the video I've spent over $2k for each of my reel mowers
What would be nice to add is a mini string trimmer that does the edge.
That would be cool
Oh man so tempting but I also want a roller option
Totally get it!
0:15 The dog: WTF!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I noticed you have a dog. Does the dog do his business in the lawn and how do you handle this?
How loud is it?
mmm I was looking at the Dreame A1 then the LUBA AWD, and now this one . Any thoughts on which is your favorite if you had to pick one and why?
All depends on the property you're maintaining
4-6 weeks? I change mine every 12 months.
@1979thorhansen ? Change what? The razor blades on your robot mower? If soo.... that's one dull blade.
The price is surprisingly reasonable
Is the reel replaceable by users? Backlapping isn't a permanent solution, so how do users get the reel re-ground? If this mower uses backlapping, is it correct to assume that this reel comes from the factory with a relief grind? Many reel mowers do not come with a relief grind and therefore should not be backlapped.
that is a great question and is yet to be determined by the company. I agree that backlapping isn't a permanent solution. the machine i received was ground from the factory. truth be told i'm not a fan of backlapping. but i understand it has it's place. all great questions.
What happens if you don’t have fixed yard borders like fences on perimeter when setting it up?...is there a manual option to set it up?
You can manually program whatever border you want by simply tapping on the A button and manually controlling the bot
It needs a bigger battery, and the ability to mow larger lawns. Otherwise, it seems pretty awesome
great feedback!
how do you feel about a mulching mower for lawn quality. and like you said you would still need an additional mower for the spring and fall scalps and if it gets to long. a
proper mulching is the best thing for a lawn.
No need to mulch when a robot cuts 1/8" off the leaf blade everyday.
I have about a 2 acre lawn I was wondering if I could use it just around my house yard. I don’t have any physical boundaries from the rest of the yard
you can set the boundaries. the map limitation is 16,000 sq ft. but you can program within that boundary.
Can it mow under bushes? For example: If you have bushes that overhang the lawn and you want him to mow under the bushes.
It really depends on the over hang. If it was 8" off the ground or more I'd say your good 👍
@@pestandlawnginja Thank you for the fast answer!😊
Another question: Our yard got multizones and is in total around 1200m². Is this size possible with one charge or is it to big for the mower?
@JaNNeX1234 according to the specs it can map up to an area of 1500m2. So you're good. You can map multiple zones within that area
This would be perfect for my parents, but they have a back corner that gets really soggy after it rains. So soggy that the zero-turn they have not can't go back there. Any concerns using this in that soggy area?
Concern.... yes. But you can easily set a virtual fence to avoid those areas for good or temporarily
As long as there aren't puddles, this is a huge selling point for the extremely light footprint of the robots. Designed to mow everyday.
Have the Segway to mow the bulk of the yard. If they could get these to mow at 0.100, then I would get one to mow the golf green and tee box.
yah, they'd need to upgrade to a 12 reel or greater to do that. maybe in the future we'd see some options like that. be pretty cool
I wonder if it could cut my Emerald Zoysia? it's kind of a tough grass.
So far I've cut blue and rye. It'll cut zoysia fine in my opinion. The machine is about 45lbs
On obstacle avoidance. Does it avoid a pile of dog poop?
not yet!
so is there a gps tracker on that mower ie "find my mower"? I know of one in somebodys front yard with a low picket fence that i'm thinking of borrowing...
Haha 😄 yeah there is. Also bound to the software
This is what i was looking for in my backyard where its annoying to reel mow with my larger mower
Awesome
How does the hover mode work with ground level is taller than the side walk or driveway?
Depends on the height. The highest section I have is an inch and it performs well. Little bit of scalping considering the height difference but the mower doesn't get stuck
Wish they would make these mowers wider like 22" - 36".
That would be pretty great
What species of grass do you have?
rye in the front and bluegrass in the back
How do you handle gates/fences?
Unfortunately I leave I have to manually open them during the mow sequence
@@pestandlawnginja that's my biggest issue with these. I know it's saving time but if they expect it to run 3-5 times a week that's a lot of babysitting the gates.
It would be nice if it came with a doggy door like gate, ideally that opened when it came near.
TerraMow or this one?
This one
I'm just not sure how it'll do during the fall season.
it all just depends on your wants. both great products but they're different one from another. i love the reel mowing and my lawn is very well kept. if you have a kept lawn and can keep debris off this is fantastic.
Hmm…I just lost my money with a simular project called Heisenberger H1 lawnmower on Kickstarter. So never again…although I like your video presenting this mower.
Sorry to hear that. Can't imagine how frustrated I'd be
Reelly?
Maybe score important aspects like cut quality, mapping and navigation, battery life, overall quality, warranty, etc. Then give a few recommendations based on category?
I’m really intrigued by robot mowers. I only have a 2000 sq foot front lawn now that I’ve built a pool in the backyard, but with two babies, I’d love to minimize yard maintenance but still have a really nice lawn.
Currently cutting hybrid bermuda with a driveway and sidewalks to navigate, tree rings, and narrow side yard.
@@MidnightRunISF its on the list for sure!
How loud is the mover? Sounds very loud for me in one sequence of your video 🤔
It's less than 60db. Not very loud.
@@pestandlawnginja Thx 👍🏼
What is the acreage that it covers? I can't find the info on it. Thanks!
its in the video. it only allows to program a space of .37 acres or smaller
