  • Honda has a decompression valve located on the exhaust lobe of the camshaft. In this video I explain how it works.

    It really hurts when that little bugger fails and you’re not expecting it! If you know it’s not working you can usually bring it to TDC and let it rip, but if it catches you off guard, look out! 😩

      Absolutely! Pulled the cord out of my hands a couple of times before I learned to always "check it". Wasn't shocked to see the recall notice I recently received (HRX217 model).

    This was a great video! Thanks for your hard work making it. I have a Honda that is having this exact issue. I adjusted the lashing and it corrected it for a day but then it went right back to being impossible to pull the recoil. I looked in the Honda service manual and it says check the camshaft. My only problem now is getting the flywheel off to get at the camshaft...

      @@ryanmkeisling9089 you shouldn't have to remove the flywheel. Remove the side cover opposite the flywheel. You can access it there.

    Hi and thankyou for the explanation. I was wondering if the lift could be adjusted in order to make cranking (recoil starter) easier. I have a Kohler lombardini 10 hp diesel.

    Hey I had one that did this and it had a lot of aluminum in oil locking the level and I over hauled and new camshaft

    Same thing with the Briggs and Stratton engines. My Husky mower seemed to have vapor lock or not enough starter power. Kept charging or buying new batteries. Then learned about a massive number of B&S engines having the same problem. To date, B&S have not assumed responsibility for this.

    This was great Jeff. How can I tell if the problem is with the plastic cam gear thing, or actually on the cam shaft below it -- where the plastic cam gear is supposed to shove both valves open momentarily?

    • @jtkasprick
      @jtkasprick  3 дня назад

      @@PRSikes all the parts are metal. The weight is moved by centrifugal force when rotating. At low rpm the weight is inward, pulled in by the spring. It only affect the exhaust valve.

      @@jtkasprick ok, I'll leave mine alone then. I thought it might be why mine doesn't seem to get any relief from full compression when I'm pulling the starter cord. I'll keep looking.

    This happens to me occasionally on my Toro 721 Power Clear Snowblower ....
    They have what Im going to call a 212cc Honda Clone that really runs good but every once in a while, it will catch you half way up the pull and its a hard stop when you dont expect it ....!???
    Solution .... use the electric starter ....Lol .... but not practical if you stall it and need a quick restart in the middle of the driveway ... ! 😂

    • @joeserrenti9857
      @joeserrenti9857 Год назад +1

      @marknye51.thefixitguy Generally I'm usually in a hurry. I let the rope feed back in, If I'm lucky I start the pull slowly and it catches and starts. Sometimes though when I hit the early stop point, I slowly pull through it, let it retract , then do a slow pull and it starts ???
      Just trail and error I guess, it's never quite the same twice .

    I havw this issue but havent stripped the engine yet. Does the sring break or the level just stick? And if so, is it a case of soaking it in wd40 or sometjing and unsticking it and reassembing? Or does a new cam shaft nees to be ordered? thanks

    • @jtkasprick

      @@matthewhayes7765 I haven't had many issues with the cam spring or lever. Mostly valve adjustment. If they are not set correctly you can have a hard to pull issue.

    • @jtkasprick
      @jtkasprick  Год назад +2

      By your comment I am assuming you were looking for a fix. There a few things you can do depending on the issue. If the centrifugal weight or springs are damaged or seized it will not move the lever opening the exhaust valve. It could also be a exhaust valve issue. If the valve has to much lash then it will not open even if the decomposition unit on the cam is working properly.

    • @jtkasprick
      @jtkasprick  Год назад +2

      It could also be something mechanical. Seized or tight crank to rod, or piston and cylinder issue.

      Can the decompressor level produce noise, like banging metal, when the spring is loose? Or when engine is running at full RPMS spring doesn't matter?
