I wish I could get ahold of the Castle Christmas special this was from. I even emailed PBS or someone and never got a response. Maybe someday somewhere this thing will get rebroadcasted.
Dennis O’Neill (Tenor) and Arwel Huw Morgan (Bass), singing in "CASTLE CHRISTMAS", broadcast 11.05pm on 21 December 1989 on HTV Wales. Programme description as follows: "'A Victorian Christmas In Wales': A musical panaroma of a Victorian Christmas celebrated at the ancient Penhow Castle in Gwent. With Dennis O’Neill, Arwel Huw Morgan and Susan Burghardt" "There's a musical panorama of a Victorian Christmas set in Wales’ oldest lived-in castle Penhow Castle in Gwent on HTV Wales (1105pm). Penhow is the home of writer/director Stephen Weeks who made the television film for HTV Wales. Over the past 16 years he has restored Penhow to some of its former glory and 'A Castle Christmas' celebrates the season in rooms that date from the 12th to 19th centuries. [Set in] Wales in the 1860s, a castle guest played by tenor Dennis O’Neill arrives at the inn below Penhow Castle: his fellow travellers on the coach sing 'Hark The Herald Angels Sing' as fitting prelude to the galaxy of carols that fill this programme. Soon at the snow-bedecked castle Dennis is welcomed by the Squire (Arwel Huw Morgan) and his Lady (Susan Burghardt) and the castle folk engage in a singing duel as they decorate the castle to the strains of 'Deck The Halls'. Villagers decorate the parish church next door with their 'Holly and the Ivy'. The programme progresses through Christmas Eve to the children hanging their stockings to the poor woman and child making their way from Newport Workhouse to get to the castle where they will pass Christmas in warmth and jovial company. The old rector pens his sermon and the castle folk and villagers join him for Midnight Mass and sing a rousing round of 'Oh Come All Ye Faithful'. On Christmas Day there are presents to be opened lunch to be prepared and eaten. Meanwhile the servants are seen hard at work in the Victorian kitchens."
' As British as they come '.....I lived on good old London for twelve years in the '50's and 60's and still miss those foggy days and nights with a good pint of bitters or two.
@@Aaron-pe7xk Thanks to another comment here somewhere I found a university library in Georgia that has a VHS copy. I chatted with that library, and it MIGHT be possible to get it through an interlibrary loan via my local library! I'm going to go talk to them about it this week. Since it was released on VHS, I'm *sure* it exists elsewhere, but the internet doesn't appear to know much about it.
OK, update: I was able to buy a DVD copy from Films Media Group, which is now (theoretically) on the way. They say it comes with public performance rights, so maybe I should host a large public screening.
I listened after many different versions of this carol song during recent christmas seazon and i plan on doing so every year. Even though i think Bing Crosby's performance is the best, this one is quite enjoyable as well. I was wondering about this show though, "A Castle Christmas", is it possible to watch the whole show somewhere? Thanks in advance P.s. Happy new year to everyone
See the replies under my comment from a couple months ago! There's a university library in Georgia where you could potentially borrow it, or you can buy it for a not-so-modest sum (link in the replies)!
The whole show? Its A Christmas Carol from 1984. George C. Scott played Scrooge. It was a TV movie. This is the easily the best telling of A Christmas Carol, and one of the best renditions of this song!
It’s ‘A castle Christmas’ it shows up on PBS every so often. It’s about a Victorian Christmas at a castle in Wales. It’s not George C Scott’s ‘A Christmas carol’ from 1985. I’ve seen the whole program and I know it was released on VHS, but this is the only fragment to make it to you-tube.
So I liked the Mandy Patinkin version on Colbert but that's not available on YT. These voices are at least as good even if the tempo is a bit quick for my taste. I prefer slow versions (informed by wine).
🎶Good King Wenceslas was not Like the carol you sing Didn't help peasants, that's rot Was a Duke, not a King He didn't collect firewood🔥 Nor trudge through the cold snow🌨 Though that story is quite good The truth we think you should know Born in 907 AD He came from Bohemia And spread Christianity⛪ To people near and far But what happened to the Duke Not nice to discover This next bit may make you puke🤮 Murdered by his brother🎶
Liberals are so charitable they cannot trust themselves to be so without threat of governmental force. See, I can make a political comment too when I'd rather just enjoy the greatest rendition of this song I've ever heard.
Could it be that they are from a copy broadcast in Greece? By the way, it's a carol, not a hymn, so it doesn't pertain to any particular branch of Christianity.
Beautiful. It celebrates the traditional virtues of Christmas. Charity and peace amongst all mankind.
This is some delicious, spirited singing!
Simply magnificent. The music, lyrics and vocals are truly Divine in their origin. God Bless
I watch this every year at christmas
Hey, any chance you could tell me where to get this?
@@calowned Have searched for the program with no luck im afraid :(
This version of this song is the best and I have hear a good many of them.
haven't we all
After all these years and still no one can identify where this magnificent performance comes from? Wth has happened to our society.

Good King Wenceslas is my favorite, too!
I feel so sentimental listening to this.

How to i find more of this?
nice
What's the name of the documentary / movie / series this is from?
MY TEACHER IN PRIMARY SCHOOL ,TOLD US ABOUT TRUE MEANING AND STORY BEHIND THE WORDS IN THAT SONG .
So do the king and the page ever actually make it to the peasant's house?
They rush through it like they have a bus to catch
Who are the singers?
The one in front is Terry Jones ;)
Dennis O Neill and Huw Morgan
Holy shit that was dope

It's on RUclips finally. Just search "Good King Wencelas Colbert"
Please who are they? Is this a movie?
Sheldon Cooper brought me here.
This song def needs a dubstep remix.
Oh, hell no!

To people near and far
But what happened to the Duke
Not nice to discover
This next bit may make you puke🤮
Murdered by his brother🎶
Not bad but I prefer The Brothers Charles. Haha.
conservatives must really hate this song because its about helping poor people
dennis reynolds What a stupid comment.

Yeah bud, you realize the biggest donors to charities are usually of a conservative/republican bent right?
@@DarkxPunk most charities are fake
A too fast rushed singing whose pace allows no reflectiveness is far removed from and quite opposite to the besr version ever.
I think they sang it at too fast a pace
Why are there awful Cyrillic Eastern Orthodox translations on this wonderful Roman Catholic song? 😦😦😦😦😦✝✝✝✝✝✝
I thought the composer was Anglican (High Church, so that might be why you thought Roman Catholic)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_King_Wenceslas
Máire Daly Pretty sure it is Anglican!

It is Greek and not Cyrillic. Beati Pauperes Spiritu.
Watchoo talkin bout Wilis?
Great song. Terrible rendition.
Rushed, passionless, perfunctory. Sounds like they wanted to get to dinner.
