  • This week I tackle the single largest rescue I have ever done. A Mars Pattern Warlord Titan. This model came to be for a commission/rescue from Josh aka. Huna Soldier. Thank you again Josh for letting me paint up this amazing model, I hope it serves the emperor for many millennia to come!

    Glorious!!

  • @odin741
    @odin741 2 года назад +4

It's important to seal in your base colors with gloss varnish before using any weathering involving white spirits. This is to stop your colors flaking away from the resin and undoing your work. It also helps when you're going back in to fine-tune your streaks and making them "clean" adjustments.
I took 18 months to paint my Warlord! I reasoned that for the cost, it had to have maximum effort put into it to justify the expense lol. I went all out with weathering and battle-damage since a titan would be a prime target and would take fire, but not overdo it- remember that less is more when it comes to damage! It can be fun adding old rust, new rust, streaks and grime, paint-chipping, soot and corrosion to show age and use and adds a lot of history and character...

When doing the heat discoloring technique you should take into account the thickness of the different parts of the barrel, due to aircooling many parts like ridges and indrectly attached rods would not reach a high enough temperature and thus retain a lower heat color or no discoloring at all.
Just looks a bit weird in my opinion.

Some advice. When you're trying to do the heated metal look, barrel heats up from firing. First spray on a base of Metallic Titanium or Metallic Silver enamel. Then do light coats of the fading effect colors. Just enough to get the look but not so much it covers the metallic. I build model airplanes and this is how I do engine exhaust cowlings. The same effect can be applied to cannons and such. It looks fantastically realistic when you finish.

If you don't mind some constructive criticism, I have to be honest, this Titan could use a bit more attention to details.
The metallic parts seem kind of flat, no highlights only a wash seems to be used. (could be the lighting used, the model could look very different in real life) painting some of the silver metallic parts in brass/gold to break it up/add detail, would add something more interesting to look at those pieces/parts.
The lenses of the head/cockpit module are not coloured IMHO coloured lenses would bring that part of the model much more to life.
However I love the the techniques used with the airbrush (specially the stencil works) even though im not fan of the colours used.
All in all the model looks much better than before and I enjoy your video's, looking forward to the next one.

I’m always appreciative of constructive criticism, so thank you for posting!
I definitely could have put way more time into this model, picking out the lenses, varying the metallics a lot more, going deeper into weathering and stenciling, etc.. but the model being a commission, I had guidelines to follow, color, amount of weathering, those kinds of things. I’m not trying to make excuses, because I agree with what you’re saying, but I tried to do what I could with the time I had for the project.

Cool video! I must give a disclaimer: I've never undertaken a project like this one, so take my feedback with a grain of salt.
I must say I was not digging the pastel-green and cream color scheme, until I saw it assembled, and you added the weathering . It works! I'm the fool. Vince Venturella has a very useful hobby cheating video for doing true metallic metal in a "zenithal style", and using oil-washes for weathering/greasing the metallic color. I think metal is a bit too shiny, especially the trim. The heat discoloration on the guns was a very good idea. The model needed something to break up the two main colors, and that guns is just about the coolest thing ever, so it's great to have attention drawn to it! My biggest criticism is of the base. It looks like black primer with a white zenithal. I did not see you work on it, so that may be why I don't like it so much.

      Thanks for the feedback.
For this project I was given the task of redoing the panels and adding a little bit of character in the form of mild weathering. The body (for the most part) and base, I was to leave alone. If I personally owned this model I would have wrecked this thing with weathering til it looked like it was going to fall apart lol. I love heavy weathering and pigments on my models, cracks, cuts, rust, you name it. But I did my best to give Josh what he asked for, and while there was a little bit of back and forth about weathering, we arrived at a good place to show just enough to say it’s been in a few battles, but hasn’t been left outside for a long time.
I love Vince’s videos, every time I watch I feel like I’m getting better as a painter! I don’t think I’ve seen that true metallic video yet, I’ll have to go search for it, thanks for the heads up!

Those AK Interactive products are absolutely amazing - buying those has changed my immersive wants from figures into wanting to make a 12x4 table of Cities of Death terrain with some industrial elements mixed in. Doing the math has shaken me but seriously I might have to do it - I want a table of 8 story buildings so much for who knows what reason. My wife says if I get a workshop/gaming club area that’s not the house to go ahead - but I don’t think she realizes I was talking of buildings more than her moms house value

They are very good. Every time I look at a project I try and think of ways to use them. A huge ruined city would make for a fantastic board, time to build a shed in the back and get to work :)

White and light, desaturated green together remind me of hospitals so they're a bit odd to see on a massive warmachine like this. I can't argue with the worksmanship, though.

When doing metal effects like this I like to use metallic mediums to thin the colours down and I generally start with a very light ink glaze for the first coat before moving back to acrylics for the rest.

Whenever you paint metalics, always base coat it black before you lay it down, especially if you are going over areas that have color and some that don't. The black will give you a solid foundation that makes the metalics pop much stronger than grey or white and if you paint them right over the areas with shifting colors, you'll be able to see that the base isn't even under them. I've watched many a video showing this to be true not too mention that I have a background in doing custom autobody paint with metalics and candy paint.
