For example I think the a7ii for ~$1500+ cannot be charged while functioning. That's a heavy price to lack a feature every smartphone in the world has.
I have been using the A7RIII as a live stream camera using an Apple type C charger, it works, however, the battery does eventually drain and the camera shuts off, so not ideal. Looking at dummy battery power solutions now.
I am looking into that too! The trouble I am facing is it is pretty hard to find a dummy battery ac adapter from where I'm based (Malaysia). Just curious have you found any solutions so far?

Thanks! This is a big help because the new Sonys wont accept dummy batteries anymore such as powerbank to dc coupler but this tip going to fix the problem.
Nice, just that I looking for, but I have the same question , in your experience you sense a large time extended charging while you connect the power bank?
Have you figured out how much extra time you get on the battery while recording? Sony is great with allowing cameras to be powered externally. The low end action Camera (HDR-AS50) runs 100% on external power when plugged in and recording. It switches to battery seamlessly when the external power is drained.
I have since started using external recorder for continued video recording longest on my Ninja V is 1hr30min with camera powered by external battery. If you use SD card to record you are still limited to 30 min recording time
I know I am late saying these, but you can get a dummy battery from Amazon or anywhere(some of those are USB ports while some are not). I saw places like BestBuy or B&H are using those dummy batteries to power their cameras up. And I believe the dummy battery could bring you infinity video-filming time if the camera is not over-heating and the power is not off.
In case you shown, I believe the battery will be drained at the end because the power of charging is a little bit less than the consumption. I am actually trying to do something similar to your case, except I am doing the long-period time-lapse, which the camera will be set to sleep for most of the time since I only want it to take 1 pic every 2 or 3 hours). And I found out a fun fact that when you're charging your camera, your camera won't be set to sleep automatically, and I am looking for a way to fix this, which I believe a dummy battery could also solve it since the camera considers it as a battery instead of a charger.
Thank you so much for this great video. I bought the Sony ZV1 and I was worry that I don’t have enough battery for recording the videos. Almost return it. Now I don’t have to worry run out of the battery. Thank you so much.
Is it better to charge this camera with USB C or Micro USB? What is a faster and better cable type to use while recording? Or it doesn’t make a difference?
I suspect USB-C will always provide more charging amps compared to Micro-USB. I only used USB-C because as evident in most cell phones, USB-C supports faster charging while Micro-USB doesn't, and can only provide limited power input for the camera so I suspect it will charge slower if you plug your charger in Micro USB
Depending on the power output of your USB-C port on your PC, some can charge while providing power for streaming function, and some can't provide enough power to do both.
Depends on what you want to record, you could use the BOYA Wireless microphones for like documentary videos or just shortfilms. I use them and they are REALLY good, far range and loooooong battery life, they’re about 100$. See for yourself what you need, I see this comment is about 2 years old. :)

Hello, i have A7Riii and 5V/2A power bank. I using original USB-C cable from Sony A7Riii package, but does not working. My steps are: 1) A7Riii is turn off. 2) i turn it on poower bank and connecting to A7Riii. On A7Riii seeing USB led lighting now. 3) I starting A7Riii and USB LED on A7Riii goes out. Battery icon on display A7Riii now does not chargering. I have charge with USB enable in menu A7Riii. Where is problem? Standart in manual A7Riii does not support charger if is A7Riii turned on. But on your video i seeing charge only A7iii, no A7Riii. I thing that is no the same. Thanks Ivan
With extension battery as back up, I went about 30 min continues. But when I need to shoot a longer event in one take, I use a Ninja Atmos V external recorder, which gives unlimited recording time as long as you have space on your SSD. My last event I recorded about 1hr 30 min. Ninja V plus a7iii plus external battery source
The battery will still drain but just at a lower rate, as charging a battery with a USB-C cable on the Sony a7III is quite slow due to the low power delivery taking about 285 minutes from 0 to 100%. In practical terms, that will give to the camera an extented battery life when compared to the camera running only with the battery itself. Also, if you'll use it as a webcam for long periods of time, I recommend to dim the monitor brightness to the minimum and to not record internaly, that will help to extend the battery life and to not overheat. Hope that helps, greetings
@@ResizeFilms you’re right. Since my original comment I’ve done many streams, the longest being about 4 hours. Setup was easy, battery lasted, pretty good over all.
Someone was telling me if I was recording for a long day. I could use a dumpy battery insert for my A7111. Yet a little nervous about how big of a external battery I could use.
Does this also work with the oldest A7? I turn it on and it's only in charge mode. Can't go to shooting mode. And another question: didn't you have issues with difference in voltage between powerbank and camera?
My Camera getting so hot after 1-hour Charging and Streaming on standby mode. I'm pretty sure it's gonna be even more with charging and recording. How is that with you guys? Its stand longer? Cat is cute tho
Yep, it gets pretty hot doing charging and recording, I have switched to using an external recorder (Ninja Atmos V) for recording, and camera don't get hot at all when charging at the same time.
If you have a capturing method on your laptop and it's powerful enough to process 4k signal then probably yes. But a external recorder is much easier to use
Since I don't have A6000 I can't give you an answer, you can test yours to see simply by plugin a charger to the A6000 while hitting the recording button. See if the battery icon on LCD changes into the charging icon. If it does then yes it works, if not then probably not working
Just plug a cell phone battery pack to the camera using a USB cable, and then try to record, if your display shows battery being charged then it should be working for A7, since I don't have A7 I can't test for you.
Appreciate it. This is a major capability that we pretty much expect with electronics and amazing some very expensive cameras do not provide.
