UPDATE - DEC 18/18 - Sony has released new firmware (v2.10) for the a7 III & a7R III that "Solves the problem caused by a specific third-party memory card, which would not be recognised by Sony cameras." I know that some of you had problems with the SanDisk cards in your Sony, so hopefully this update will fix it. Please post your results if it does/doesn't. 🤞
Any chance you've heard of the Lexar cards being a problem? I've seen a few complains online about people having issues with them in their Gh5 cameras.
Dude. This video's going to make you a lot of bread in the long run. Make un update for it next year. This is the best SD card guide on RUclips to date.
sadly it isn´t as popular as it should be...but it´s the title, it´s to long and there are many non-important words. Instead of: "The BEST SD Card for VIDEO", he should´ve used something like: "BEST VIDEO SD CARD"
Actually was looking at my XQD card and was like wtf is this here mean... on to RUclips and get Undone! ..but ya, need an update with some info for us *whisper* 'Nikon guys' , shhhh... Please Gerald... do it for us Canucks! ;)
yeah, exactly, the extended contacts SDXC II never seen before; I thought that I know everything about SD, but not here... probably(sure) not usefull for video but yet another difference is random access IOPS for small files writing/deleting mostly ... 10 years ago, some cards used even SLC flash chips and Kingston Ultimate was the beast...
Here's the card I was holding in the video - SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB SDXC V30: geni.us/PwlC Also, one thing I didn't mention in the video is the "x" ratings you see on some brands of cards. (e.g. Lexar 133x). This number is just like the 95MB/s you see on the face of cards--it's the read speed of the card when taking the files off and putting them on your computer. It was based on old CD-ROM read speeds, which had a base of 0.15 MB/s. You just multiply the number of x's by 0.15. So a card with a 166x speed rating would be 166 x 0.15 MB/s = 24.9 MB/s. Alright, now I'm really done. 😜
@Vadim - Sure! 😃 I would recommend the Sony a6500 (geni.us/l53ssL9 ). It can do everything you want and includes 4K. If it's a bit out of your budget, you can consider some DSLRs from Canon, some of the Rebels aren't too big, but they are bigger than mirrorless sytems. The Rebel SL2 (geni.us/9aTvbFq ) or T7i (geni.us/RVZJ5su ) are strong, but don't have stabilization in the body and only do 1080p. Same goes for the less-expensive Sony systems like the a6000 (geni.us/SON6cmx ) & a6300 (geni.us/9oU61zc ). They have everything you want except stabilization. For phones, the best cameras right now are in the Pixel 2 and the iPhone X. They are good, but not as good as the dedicated cameras mentioned above.
No problem! 😃 As far as point and shoots go the G7 is pretty good. But keep in mind that there are no upgrade paths with cameras like that. You can't get lenses, build out your kit, etc. Basically it's a single use item and when you're done with it or you out grow it, you have to start all over again. I think they are good for side cameras or travel cameras, but I don't like them if you are trying to get a serious start on photo/video. Here check out this video I made last month. It might help you: ruclips.net/video/x8cNyHn2z6I/видео.html
Perhaps you should have added to check the specifications of the camera as you might be spending unnecessary extra money getting a faster card if the camera could not handle it (eg. not handle UHS II and falling back to UHS I ) - Unless you have multiple uses for the card and one of the devices could use it.

Your content is sufficient and perfect! There are a 100 videos out there telling which card they recommend(which might also be sponsored). Your video here just tells how to interpret any card and take a decision ourselves! All your other content tries to do the same and I totally vouch for such stuff! Your channel is my favorite amongst all! Thanks for taking the effort.
This video is very concise and easy to understand, and again, now I can just forward this video instead of trying to explain things; usu ppl just listen to 1 or 2 points, then TLDR (R=Listen in this case). SD cards have so many critical details that are important to get right, it pays to be meticulous; looking at you neewbies. I've always decided on the price point I wanted to pay for cards, 30-35.00, and waited for the price to drop to get the good cards, (yes, exceptions, but mostly true). I reuse older cards, with low bit rate recording, for audio equipment because audio doesn't ever change, 16bit is top quality, and no one records in 24bit; there won't ever be a 4k audio, just additional tracks; also most audio recorders max out at 32Gb. Nothing on Hoodman or Sony Tough cards? The card you recommended is top quality & reliable; also I own these cards. As a side note, I've included older cards with the sale of older cameras to set them free.
I forgot to thank you last year when I first watched this. It popped up today. Since then, I bought a few 64GB SanDisk ExtremePro SDXC II, 300mb/s cards, like the ones you showed here. Great cards.
I know I am a dummy when it comes to anything electronic, this was a great video and even I could understand it, I took notes. Best on youtube. One thing that made it so pleasing to watch was you talked fairly quickly but not to fast. No blah blah moments! No long introduction with smoke and mirrors. I didn't end up putting my head on the desk and begging PLEASE GET ON WITH IT. Thank you for sharing your smarts.
I really never understood my sd cards for the past decade, but I wanted to learn and upgrade mine. Plus, I have a second slot now too. Thank you!! This was super helpful.
Gerald, great video! Could you help me, please? I have a 64GB SanDisk Extreme Pro U3 Classe 10 but when I use it on my GH4 I only get split videos at multiple files all the time... What am I doing wrong?
best video on sd card. you're really good at explaining all of this. i feel like i quite knew all of these things but you really just stick all of the important information in my head. nice one dude
@@geraldundone The only question is why don't photographers use the microSD version? They're cheaper and when you upgrade you can stick your old card in a phone or a Switch or whatever.
Seriously, I wish I saw this video 2 weeks ago it would have saved me a bunch of $$$. Just got my EOS R and been needed some new memory cards for it and I wasn't sure which to get. Seriously the BEST explications of cards and what all the info on them means. Keep it up dude, Respect.
All your videos are so informative. Thank you for doing what you do! I love seeing notifications telling me Gerald posted a new video I get excited to see what I will learn this time 🤙
Dude, awesome video. This short video was very dense, with great info. You must've put a lot of time into this 12:26 long video. I really appreciate it. Subscribed!
SO HELPFUL! I'm picking up a Sony a6400 today after work and since I'm an oldschool shooter (last time I shot was on a DVX-100B.....So....tape lol) I really didn't know what to look for in terms of memory cards. Thanks Gerald. As always you did a great job!
Hi Gerald, love your videos! Just wanted to add in that if you have an SDHC card, you can use a Windows PC to manually format it as exFAT, skirting the 4GB filesize limit you mentioned. Formatting it in camera will default to FAT32 (as per the spec) but it's only a default & not a hard requirement. I tested an exFAT formatted SDHC card in my a7 III and was able to record a 30 minute, 20.2GB 4K video file in one go. Hope this helps someone frustrated with broken up files save some money by not buying an SDXC card!
Man!! That was the love i needed in my life!!! Thanks, so much, for breaking it down and explaining things in a way that indicated you really care. I am officially a subscriber...even though I am an embryo in the world of videos..and cameras..(Sony a6000)..I do anticipate learning all I can according to my level of understanding from you...Take care...and thanks for sharing your knowledge and precious time..👊🏿🤜🏿🤛🏿!!
Very Helpful, thank you so much! I often need refreshers on SD cards etc. All I need to do is be capable of recording 4K at 60 fps. Since the higher speed-rated cards are double the price, I'm going to be ok with a SD that is rated C10, 128 GB Capacity, SDXC V30 I, I don't care about the download speeds once back at the editing station, so at 170 MBs, I'm fine with that. Thank you, all great information well presented.
This cleared up so much for me in such a short time. As someone who just got the S5IIX, I would really like to see this updated for the 10bit full frame gen of cameras 😂 Thanks as always, Gerald!
I concur with the overwhelming consensus regarding this video, extremely informative, clear and concise. I recently picked up a Fuji X-H1 and have been debating with the idea of needing a UHS-2 to handle this camera's 4k 200 bit rate. I understand from Gerald's explanation, the Sandisk Extreme Pro V30 UHS-1 card maxing at 240bits should handle the H1, but was simply curious if anyone has had any real world experience shooting the xh1 at 200bits with the extreme pro mentioned.
Hi, thank you for such a quality guide, I watched several videos before your’s , non of them were clear for me. You are the best by far. I’ve bought sdxc 64Gb card and after watching your video know exactly what I got. Keep it up great content 👍
Thanks mate ! I was a little confused about all those numbers and the speed thing and you made it very clear for me now :). Buying Sandisk Extreme Pro from your link ;)

You conveyed the information well. Very informative. Maybe refrain from saying, “Obviously *blank*” because many things you said aren’t obvious to me. All in all great job
You helped out so much with video. I had been searching to find the right SD card for my new fujifilm xp 4k camera. I am not a professional but I did want to find the best SD for the best possible pics and videos with this little camera and tour video did it for me! Thanks!!

Dude! Thanks again for making this easier to understand. I own a Sony a7iii and I know now that I can use one uhs1 slot for video and uhs2 slot for photo. Thanks a lot again!
I almost wrote a comment - GERALD!!!! - this video is 2 years ago - it's no longer valid. And then I watched. And still valid. What a treasure to youtube and content creators.
Would a faster card improve burst shooting performance? I have a ZV1 and sandisk extreme card and was wondering if the extreme pro would improve the buffer writing speed on the card.
And 10 miuntes later, I know what card I should buy because of what you've taught us. Know I dont see random symbols and numbers, now I understand which card I need to buy to get the best perfomance.
Thank you so much! I was trying to figure out which card would go with the camcorder that I just bought. The description read: Max 128 GB Class 10. Wellllll, what does that mean exactly and how am I to know which one to choose? Sooooo, I watched several video's about these card, by several different people. You made the distinction between the SD cards clear and understandable. Why can't they all be like you? I chose an SD card that is 128 GB, 150 MB/s, V30, 3 in the U, and C 10 (class 10), so I can start to make video's that might go over an hour, so not the 64 GB SD card. Whew! That's out of the way. Thanks again!
This video is most helpful. I am planning on getting a new camera for Christmas. The Canon m50. I began looking at SD cards and thought it was best to get maximum storage with 100mbps. You have shown me the truth though. You have also explained why many reviews I have read expressed with 30 min blocks in their recordings Thank you!!!
Very thorough and helpful! I was so excited to use my Canon m50 to up my RUclips videos but no card 😩. Now I need to wait, again. But thanks to you, now I can get the best memory card. 😘
Gerald, great, clear, and concise presentation. Thank you so much. You're a born teacher---excellent, with the tiny caveat that I have to have a minimum of two cups of VERY strong coffee if I want to avoid listening to your vids twice to catch all the info. That's okay. I love coffee.
Sometimes ya just gotta wonder who in the world pushes the thumbs-down on content like this.... Thanks Gerald. Great info. I've been in the game for many years and had no clue. Just trying to figure out this video thing. Cheers. Trying to find media for the High Bitrate bodies is a chore.... make sure the masses know that the BMPCC 4K is out of reach of any internal card of any type to date in full RAW. Off to AngelBird to find USB-C speed class SSDs. lol
Thank you thank thank you Gerald ! :-)! That was so informative :-) Especially the part about FAT 32 dividing your footage up into small portions...very annoying....it happened to me this summer when trying to film a local choir concert! Now I know!

Dang. Straight to the point and very informative!
This explains everything I needed to know, thank you
Thank you Gerald, so great to have that "unsexy" but important topic so well explained !!
I have Canon Rebel SL2. It’s not 4K. Which card will upload video the fastest to my computer which is a new iMac.
Informative. Taking away new knowledge from this video. I appreciate your help!
Wow...always learning new stuff here!
Once again, you SLAY this stuff as a teacher. Thanks a million.
Thank you for getting straight to the point! This helps a lot :)

Haha. Thanks, Matt. Cheers, buddy. 😀
Thanks for the video, I can FINALLY make sense of these cards now !
My brain hurts...But it was worth the pain.
Ha. Nice! 😃👍
Same lol
This was extraordinarily useful. Subscribed!
Awesome! I'm glad to hear that. Thanks for the comment and the sub! 😃🙏
Thank you a bit tooo fast for an old guy like me, but most of the info I never heard of. Appreciate you taking the time.
Bought a Sony a7iii today and you solved my problem ❤️
Just this video alone made me subscribe to your channel.
Great knowledge sharing.
Thank you.
This video is most helpful. I am planning on getting a new camera for Christmas. The Canon m50. I began looking at SD cards and thought it was best to get maximum storage with 100mbps. You have shown me the truth though. You have also explained why many reviews I have read expressed with 30 min blocks in their recordings
Thank you!!!
Very thorough and helpful! I was so excited to use my Canon m50 to up my RUclips videos but no card 😩. Now I need to wait, again. But thanks to you, now I can get the best memory card. 😘
Perfect video boss! Appreciate your help with this!
Thank you very much for making this video, after watching it I got the right SD right away :)
Glad to hear it! Thank you. :)
Haha. Thanks, William. Appreciate it. 😃🙏
Gerald Undone I think I’m going to take a course in speed listening.
Off to AngelBird to find USB-C speed class SSDs. lol
maybe they actually meant to click it twice as was instructed at the end of the video but the second click didn't register XD
What a GREAT video! Thank you so much man! VERY informative and helpful.
thank you for sharing and making it easy to understand. Cheers
Thank you thank thank you Gerald ! :-)! That was so informative :-) Especially the part about FAT 32 dividing your footage up into small portions...very annoying....it happened to me this summer when trying to film a local choir concert! Now I know!
This is priceless word. Thanks so much Josh! (New subscriber here; learned about you via Jeven Dovey's video Mistakes New RUclipsrs Make) Cheers,
