  • ATR 42 and ATR 72 are the twin-engine turboprop airliners, which made up a family, developed by the French-Italian ATR joint venture in the early 1980s. The planes continues to share a high degree of commonality and have been produced side-by-side for decades.

I work as an aircraft mechanic on ATR 42. One of the things which amaze me is that it does not have any hydraulic assistance for main flight controls (There are, however, hydraulic spoilers which move together with ailerons), instead using variety of aerodynamic tricks to ease forces on the yoke. One less thing to wrong I guess.

      @ Nikko Andrew Parangue
That is known as roll upset and is actually one of the advantages manual controls have over powered ones.. and why you’re not supposed to fly on autopilot in severe icing conditions.
Controls that are snatched from your hands indicate roll or pitch upset and tell you that you should increase speed and not change configuration.

    • @happyface96
      @happyface96 3 года назад +7

True. But did you know the history of how that happened?
It was in 98 during the asian economic crisis when IMF told Indonesia to holt their indigenous prop plane programme in exchange for monetary aid, a move which then made ATR 1 competitor less in the Indonesian market.
Same tactics done by EU and WTO to boycott Indo/Malay Palm Oil so that their sunflower seed oil can get an advantage in the biofuel global market.

I once flew on an ATR 42 with American Eagle in 1992, from Raliegh Durham to Charlotte NC. The thing I noticed was that it was somewhat less noiser than most turboprop airliners. It appeared to have thicker cabin insulation that somewhat muffled the low pitched drone that's produced by the props. My girlfriend gave it the nickname, "The Whisperprop". I wish that Boeing 737s and Airbus A 300's were turboprop instead of conventional fan jet, Though a bit slower, turboprops are more fuel efficient than fan jet engines. I also love the sound that the props make, the "Box Fan" sound full ground idle and taxiing, and the "Bumblebee" sound in takeoff and inflight. Some say driving a manual transmission vehicle is "Real Driving". I say flying in a propeller driven airliner is "Real Flying"!

The ATR is a great aircraft for making money and keeping people employed. It asks a bit of one's handling skills near the ground but with good training and some and ice-awareness it will lift a lot, burn very little and open new routes. A reliable platform with a long future ahead.
Edit: according to Wiki, the major icing event was an American company in 1994. I suspect back then ice awareness training was not mandatory, and has caused many crashes in many aircraft, most commonly from not dealing with it in a certain way and timely manner. Also, icing conditions involved in that flight were severe, and to the best of my knowledge no aircraft are certified to fly in severe icing. 'TransAsia Airways' makes up roughly half of all accidents in the ATR, which does not help the ATR's reputation.
    Thanks Skyships!

I have flown on TAP's ATR-72 and SATA Air Azores Q400, Q800 and the old ATP... They are all nice but the the ATR has the most modern cabin. From outside it kind os looks dated with the high wing but inside is very modern and comfortable. I really enjoy flying Porto to Lisbon on these little things. So quiet and views are so much better than on a jet plane!

They can be tricky for inexperienced pilots or those with limited intelligence. Crosswind TOGO or landings can be challenging. The wing surface area is designed for fuel efficiency, not maximum lift and low speed flight. Redesigned wings that are longer and larger would make it better.

The ATR 72 was the only turboprop my mom and I flew on. Before flying on that turboprop, she refused to fly on propeller and turboprop airplanes and would rather fly on passenger jets. Even after having an experience onboard the ATR 72 with Cebu Pacific back in 2019, we never liked it because of the uncomfortable seats and small overhead bins too small that we had to check in bags. However, we got what we paid for because Cebu Pacific is a budget airline along with its branch Cebgo. Even if that experience wasn't enjoyable because we never felt safe in that type of plane, turboprops shouldn't go obsolete because those planes would only make sense to be utilized in small airports that have shorter runways and limited service.

I like the ATR models more so than the Dash-8 models, simply because of the gear placement. Glad that the icing issues are now a thing of the past. If given a choice on which to own between the Q400 and the ATR-72...ATR-72 would be in my hanger.

7:27 The RP-C4201. I always seen that aircraft in Ninoy Aquino International Airport catering charter flights to popular tourist destinations in the Philippines.

You should do the BAE 146/Avro RJ or the Lockheed Constellation sometime!

I lived in Cape Verde for a good while. Cape Verde airlines has a lot of ATRs and I used to know many of its pilots. It is not only some good aircraft for travelling in, it is also a very interesting aircraft to pilot they used to say.
However, the "faint of heart" wont be too comfortable with its noise or the sensation the short distance of the engines to the body of the plane gives.

Yep, LIAT, Caribbean Airlines, Bahamas air all went ATR when they retired their Dash8-300's. Was hoping they would have gone Q400 but the economics pushed them to ATR.

They (ATR) actually had agreed on a name, which was Colibrì (Humming Bird). It was the official name of the ATR42, but nobody ever really used it, and it is now forgotten.
