    Hey, do you think the same procedure would work with thinner foam, maybe even foam of different thicknesses? Of course I would try my best to have all of the curvy pieces be the same as each other so they wouldn't overlap weird, but just in general, different thicknesses for the body of the hat compared to the brim and so on. I plan to enhance the hat by coating it with fabric later to make it seem a bit less handmade anyways, so that should make it more durable as well

  • @mydirtyfeet
    @mydirtyfeet 6 лет назад

    Great project! I just bought the pattern. Was just wondering if you have any tips on the adjustments needed if your foam is thinner. Mine says it is only 2mm on the package, so that is quite a bit less than your 8mm.

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  6 лет назад

      Hmmm, that is pretty thin for this project, it might not be firm enough to keep it's shape. As far as the pattern goes, if you are going to use the 2mm foam, It will end up a slightly larger size than the pattern states. I have never tried it, so I can't be much more specific than that though.
      I think you might have better success going with thicker foam than I used- such as those puzzle piece foam mats.
      Sorry I can't be more helpful.....

    • @mydirtyfeet
      @mydirtyfeet 6 лет назад

      Lost Wax Thanks for your response! I will still give it a try as I already have the material and if it does't work it will just be good fun and I will search for some sturdier foam. I will take in account the bigger size for now, that is a useful tip! Thanks!

    • @tobs__
      @tobs__ 3 месяца назад

      hullo i’m way late (8 years to be exact) but i’d say you’d take your brim piece and cut 2 of those out of your fabric then take your top piece for the actual hat portion and cut 2 of those out with your fabric, or 1 if you want to be lazy, then wrap the other bit in plastic wrap and tape, then mark out where you want everything to go, take it off the hat, and cut it from your fabric. then sew or hotglue all of that together and voila (in theory)

    Would this pattern work well with leather or suede leather of some kind? Cuz this hat is amazing sir, and im planning on making a top hat steampumk styled one, and i really love the way this hat looks!

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  8 лет назад

      +Kenneth Frantz I think you could do it with leather, I would use vegetable tanned leather, it is much stiffer, and would hold it's shape better. You would just need to figure out how you would want to stitch the seams, and I am not sure but you might need to put a wire in the brim to help it hold it's shape.

    Hi ive just purchased your pattern for this hat what would you say would be the best thickness for the foam 2mm 6mm etc and depending on the thickness would it be easy to cover with material .Any help would be great . Ps love your channel

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  8 лет назад +1

      +purplepheonix I would use between 6 and 8 mm foam for this one. I have had people cover them with material. I think what they have done is cover each section separately and then have a strip of ribbon or something to go over the seams of the fabric. Hope that helps:)

  • @Nutamu
    @Nutamu 8 лет назад

    With the use of that type of foam...is the hat stable? I don't plan on resting a book on it lol but it looks a bit wobbly to me. Do you think a product like magikote (which makes styrofoam paintable but also stiffens it) would help with the wobble?

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  8 лет назад

      Yes, the hat is pretty stable, I think you could easily rest a book on it. and if you use a higher density foam such as the foam floor mat I use in my viking helmet video, it would be even stronger. It all just depends on how stiff the foam is.

    • @Nutamu
      @Nutamu 8 лет назад

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  8 лет назад

      +Xenia0056 It depends on what foam you make it out of. There is quite a variety of densities of foam available. The one I made would definitely be able to withstand a papier mache teapot- assuming the teapot to be pretty much normal size:)

    ok here's my problem, instead of spray painting it I want to use silk fabric. I am wanting to make a top hat for a costume and I want the fabric to match my suit, and when spray painting the top hat you can see seams, but when fabric is over it you cant. The problem is idk how to add fabric cleanly to the hat. I attempted it once but adding fabric to the foam messed up the pattern and the hat didn't fit together and the hat no longer at the flare effect. How can I go about this differently? I really want to make my own top hat but it seems as if im failing and doing quiet a bad job.

  • @yzg2kl
    @yzg2kl 9 лет назад

    I just wanted to say that your patterns are amazing and I love them. I just finished making the mad hatter one and its incredible but unfortunately I came across one problem..............my head is too big. The patterns only go up to 61 cm but believe it or not my head is still to big. Is there a way you can re-post the patterns again with bigger sizes? If not that's alright, I'll try to make the one I made work out. Love your work

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  9 лет назад

      yzg2kl Hmmm, part of the problem could be the fact that it flares in as it goes up,- is it too small at the very base, or is it that your head is hitting the narrower section as it goes up. If that is the fact, you could just reduce the amount each panel curves in. Let me know how it goes! I probably won't be able to get another size made in the next little while- I just maven from Australia to Canada, so it's a bit manic right now:)

    • @yzg2kl
      @yzg2kl 9 лет назад

      Lost Wax It's too small at the base but I'll give it a bit of tinkering if I can. I would like larger patterns though but by all means take your time I'm in no rush. If not, that's alright. At least I have a top hat now. :)

    Has anyone tried this and knows if it would be easy to sew some material over the top hat? I have this top hat design but I want to make the top hat from scratch too... I just don't know if foam is a durable enough material...

      Then you won't get the curve. That's a lot more like my other top hat pattern.

    Where do you buy your foam? Cuz I normally use cardboard to make my props but it's such a pain to work with and this looks like a wayyyy better idea

      I think you could make this from a decently thick piece of veg tanned leather, depending on your skill level with leather working. It's always worth a try:)

    When painting how do you make it look like satin?

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  9 лет назад

      +Eva Harshbarger I am not sure, it is just the combination of the texture of the foam and the paint I use I guess. I use artists acrylic black paint- so nothing special.

    What is the maximum size, in inches, is the pattern good for?

      My largest size should fit a head with 63cm circumference, or 24.8 inches.

    hi, am I supposed to print the pattern on A4 paper tho? it looks big in the video but mine look really small irl

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  7 лет назад

      Yes, you can print it on A4 paper. Just make sure that whatever program you are printing from (usually Adobe Reader) is set to print actual size. There is a little checkbox you can check to make it do that. Otherwise it will try to scale the pattern down a bit. Or, just thinking here, do you maybe have the mini top hat pattern and not the full sized flared top hat?

      +Andrea Adkins This hat pattern comes with sizes from small to large, if you want an even smaller top hat, you could try my mini top hat pattern.

    Lost Wax, I think your video's are great, and I tried purchasing the top hat pattern. I added all the information to submit the payment, and once I hit the button to pay the screen went back to your home screen. Did the transaction complete? What should I look for in email to see if it completed? I have another question, and wish I had your email address, but I am not sure where to contact you at besides here. I was going to purchase the mini top hat pattern too, but when checking out it adds a dollar to the total, so the 4.99 amount is 5.99 when checking out. Why is that? Thanks in advance for your help!

      +mtpepsicoke Hi, Thanks for contacting me, If the payment completed, you should see a page showing the download link, you should also get an email with the link as well.
      It sounds as if maybe you are clicking the Paypal link near the bottom of the page? I just added that for people who didn't want to use their credit cards. Because of the extra cost of having to have a second payment system, I added $1 to the price to cover that. It is all written out in the paragraph before the button. If, instead you click the "I want this button" on that page you will be taken to the Gumroad checkout page and the price will be right. They may even have a Paypal option- they seem to add it and remove it kind of randomly so I never know for sure if it will be there. If you need to contact me, you can reach me at lostwaxozcontact@gmail.com If you let me know the email you tried to purchase with, I can tell you if it went through or not.
      Hope that helps, sorry for the frustration.
