Joe Dart is a modern day bass phenom. His fingerstyle funk bass grooves are at the heart of the Vulfpeck sound and Dean Town is the MUST KNOW bass line of the modern era in much the same way that Teen Town has been a bass players rite of passage since the original Jaco Pastorius recording with Weather Report in 1977.
In this lesson I'll be breaking down and showing you how to play Dean Town bass line. I'll also be giving tips on how to approach learning the entire 'melody' section by way of 'chunking'.

Need a tutorial on Joe's head movement lol
Just remove a couple of vertebrae from your general neck area. 😀
Purchase a pez dispenser and study carefully
Role play quagmire on the beat
Great head
Would need a hell of a disclaimer and legal team.
I've saved this to my RUclips folder called 'Bass Lessons' - thank you!
I have a similar one called bass tutorials
Mine is called Bass Learning.
"my safe Bass place Safe"
Mine is just bass
Mine is bass lesson tutorial safe space bass tabs -_-
Good choice! I half-assedly learned to play this from the sheet music, but I'm looking forward to learning something new about this song. PS. Have a look at the version from the Madison Square Garden concert - 14000 people singing along with the bass solo.
That bass solo chant was glorious
Your such a bad ass bass player and a gift of a teacher. Thanks for this lesson.
Mark this tutorial is amazing! I first learnt Dean Town from Lefty Bassman, but your video really breaks down the song in an entirely new way! MORE VULF PLEASE!
(How about: Lost My Treble Long Ago and Sky Mall?) Thanks!!!
He’s an amazing teacher.
Really good tutorial. As for other Joe Dart lines to do, would love a video for Disco Ulysses or Cory Wong.
After having learnt the first bit of the line with D# on D string and open A it was a real fight against muscle memory to learn it Joe's way.
Great tutorial, thanks!
I have to say, Mark has a very effective way of teaching. I learned a lot from him over the past few years. And now, please excuse me, gotta start warm up my neck so it can catch up with the groove. 😎
Hands down the best. I've got loads of his courses and they're great
Hey Mark. Thanks for putting this up (for free) so I can study the PhD thesis in groove and composition that Dean Town is. I think every player eventually runs into the piece they *must* learn... and this is the piece that does it for me. It has everything I want to understand in spades and without this clear rendition I think I'd be struggling to be honest. I know this has been up for years but that really makes the case for posting it up, right? Wonderful you put the practice tracks up on your website too. You're a diamond. All the best and thanks again ❤
I spent so much time trying to get this right. Now I can't wait for Mark to show how i probably should have done it.
Even after a year of struggling to play the line at 1x speed, this one is by far my favour bass tutorial on youtube. I wish there were more such challenging, yet interesting, ones here.
I’m just here trying to get the first 8 bars down. I’ll get there... Someday.
You will ! I've been trying to play steadily those 8 bars for at least a year, and I'm only starting now to be endurant enough to be able to play what comes next without having finger cramps.
That's so rewarding to pull it out. :)
It was the first song I learned (overachiever) and it kindaaa worked after playing every night a little more of the solo
This is phenomenal. The content is so easy to follow and breakdown that I've pretty much got it after about 5 hours of practice, and i thought i'd never get it!!! Thanks Mark
I love that bass! It's beautiful!
Thank you, this saved me a boatload of time, it’s great ear training to figure it out yourself, but you showed me where I went wrong. When you broke it down into chunks it was more manageable, it’s overwhelming trying to just learn it as one long lick. Lol
I remember doing this with my music teacher a couple of years ago. He especially wanted me to practice sixteenth notes.
This video is great! Tough song to catch, but you made it possible even for a beginner
One of the best bass teacher on youtube! THX for this song
Very comprehensive tutorial. By far the most challenging thing i've tried to learn in a while...makes me realize how dependent I am on hammering and sliding for a lot of my playing. Not quite there yet, but keeping at it! Thanks!
Dude! Thank you so much! It was hard for me to learn from just the sheet music. This video helped a ton!😃
Finally got around to learning this! Thanks so much, Mark!!
a coincidence!!!! ive been learning this song for the past week, and i just now you're teaching how to play???? also, amazing how joe dart is finally mentioned :)
Maaan! This is the first video of you I'm watching and it's amazing. Keep up the good work!
Hey, I really like how you are explaining this. Am in the process of starting to play again after many years and it is so motivating how you are presenting this. Thank you so much !
I've had 7 years off, just getting back in to it... How you finding it?
same
Fantastic Mark - Really enjoyed this master class. Great bass line by Joe Dart - it's a great warm up, and could make its way onto a set list for a hip crowd. Thanks
the intro pedal part the second time around with all the fills is so fun to play.
Awesome, thank you Mark! "It Gets Funkier IV" has a mad solo that I think would be worth covering.
Thanks, this is another phenomenal lesson from you. Pointing out the difference between hammering on and plucking all notes was very insightful.
It s perfect! you couldn't have done a lesson more well done
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
How about "Beastly"? Sounds simple, but I can't seem to get the phrasing right.
It’s actually harder than it sounds imo
Awesome lesson, -- Thanks Mark! And I would like to nominate, Beastly for the same instructional treatment... So Cool! Thanks Again !
This song made me buy a bass. 15 months later I finally can play it :)
That's pretty fast man. Nice work.
that was an incredible lesson, THANK YOU MARK!!! you are a goddamn blessing to us all!
Super, Mark! Great approach to this song! So helpfull!!!
You've literally taught me so much thank you and please never stop
I love being a bass player. But I can never do most of this stuff. You guys amaze me.
Good you do a similar breakdown with either teen town or hit me with your rhythm stick. Loved this lessons, would never of learnt it if I didn't learn in small sections.
Great lesson, Mark! A huge thank you for a very detailed explanation. Works great together with the transcription, and your guidance on how to practice is also super valuable! Cheers!
man you are by far the best bass youtube teacher. thank you thank you thank you!!!!!
Hey Mark...I appreciate what you do, man! This tutorial is great for me to get this incredible tune under my fingers! Thank you!
Damn that bass of yours is incredible, love the way it catches the light like that. Another rock-solid tutorial, thanks as always Mark, you totally nailed it.
Thank you so much for this! Love the breakdown.
Great tune. Thanks for super lesson Mark. Above my level at the moment, but practicing to get there...
merci beaucoup, vous avez vraiment pris le temps pour cette vidéo...
c'est très rare....
I just learned this today. I love it.
Thanks so much for this tutorial Mark!!
Awesome video mark. Can you break down beastly by vulfpeck next
So excited about you doing this
great job man THANK YOUU
Cheers Mark, this is awesome.
I know it's a 2 years old video, but great lesson! Thank you very much!!
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS I LOVE YOU MARK
Awesome again, reminds me of the ole Ian Dury lesson !!
Ohhhh it’s on! It took me a month to figure this out by myself and I bet I got half of it wrong. I can’t wait for this lesson. Thanks in advance.
Mark, you are the GO-TO GUY when it comes to bass transcriptions. I mean, checking the concert videos to see the original fingering? There simply is no better. How about Ian Dury's "Hit Me with your Rhythm Stick?
Thanks a lot. Already done Hit Me.
Thanks for the content, precisely what I've been learning. As a suggestion, what about Cory Wong?
Thank you a lot. I don´t know how someone could clic dislike. This is very helpful.
Ok, now I have what to do for the next month! Thank you Mark!)
Kind of remind me of your old Ian dury lesson, good times !
Great tutorial!! Thanks!!!
Does He Play Flatwounds? And then Bridge PU? Thanks a Lot. Great Channel!!!!❤
I think the steady 16th notes part Is the hardest of the whole line.
After many attempts I discovered that the tricky moments are those when you change from an upper string to a lower one (EG from D string to A string). I solved this by raking on string change. So if i start the groove on index finger as I change string I and up starting on second finger.
Thanks a million for this and I love the 'proper' control from the 5th fret instead of open string. I think your ghost note is wrong in the tab before the B around 13:14? I think the B plays first and then the ghost note? Just sounds like it anyway but I'm only learning. Thanks again - back to the practice!
Nice lesson! How about Volpeck, "Daddy Got a Tesla."
Vulfpeck**
Best bass tutor on RUclips
Thanks so much for this! You sound fantastic, but I notice that Joe’s sound is a little less trebly and more staccato then it may sound with the setup you are using. Any comments on his particular technique and setup that facilitate this style - strings, muting, hand placement, etc?
Great playing! I think the second double stop should be a repeat of the first though.
Great lesson, as usual, Would be cool to get a breakdown of come on come over by Jaco in a similar way as this video. Thanks again
Great tutorial, thanks. It would be beyond awesome if you do Beastly by Joe Dart
Very Impressive
More vulfpeck please 😁
Thank you this fantastic
Watching Joe Dart play Dean Town with Federico Malaman and Nicolas Viccaro it looks as though he's playing the D# on the D string instead of the A string. I'm probably wrong though. Thanks for the lesson. Your bass sounds great.
Hi Mark, Great lesson....as usual, and thank you. Just wondered if you could clarify something for me: at around 13:03 you have written a ghost preceding the B note in the second bar of the C#m7 section, but in your tutorial you play it AFTER the B note. Then an edit note appears on the screen saying "Ghost note 'BEFORE' B as tab". From which I assume I play the ghost note not after but before the B note. Probably dumb point to want clarified as it appears self explanatory! Okay, cheers for now Fred
I think you can do Beastly, it is basically a bass solo in a form of song but studying the licks there can be helpful, the whole song would be the best
What is hip...the whole song....coz i have got the first intro part n then im just lost.....i have seen many videos on vulfpeck but never tried....after seeing this i thing i need to give a try...you make things look very easy.....please what is hip
Hi Mark So glad you did Dean Town. This tutorial is helping me a lot. Should I be playing over the bridge pickup for that tone and is there any effects being used by Joe Dart? 👍
From my understanding, Joe typically plays right over the bridge pickup with the tone rolled off. Pretty much exactly how Jaco did it with his Jazz bass! (which in effect, gets you almost the exact same type of tone)
30:57 is very useful
This is such a flex
Theres this Joe Dart bass line I really really like. Its Woody and Jeremy - "Too Hot In LA"
Do beastly if you can! Another AWESOME dart line
How about a breakdown of Squarepusher's Iambic 5 Poetry?
the best bass teacher
Mark, I feel you are talking right at me because I’ve wanted to learn this for a long time but I try and take on too much, and I give up
nice job - thanks...:)
Your E string has a good growl to it while your other strings sound really tight. Is this due to your string gauge, scale length or something like that? I really like that tone. Great video about a great song!
Could you perhaps give us some tips on the technique that Joe Dart uses to make his notes so short and staccato? For me, that's the most characteristic thing about the way he plays. Great videos! Thanks so much!
I think its two things. The duration that the left hand presses each note, and the compression of the sound.
genius. thanks.
You're brilliant.
Sounds great
great video) thanks)
Dean Town was written by Woody Goss, but I would like to know in which state it was initially - only the harmony or harmony with some melodic part? And how much Joe has added on top?
Hey man great vid, would love a victor wooten number maybe the lesson or overjoyed
This is the test you have to pass to get your bass "drivers licence". I am still a learner but I'm getting there. One day I will pass the test.
me too. I have only been playing for 4 weeks, but I can't wait to learn this
Haha good one
Technically this is the new more modern test. The old test was Jaco's Teen Town. Equally cool, and possibly easier than this test.
If driving tests were this hard the road would be empty.
@@FrederickTSchurgerDC This is more modern but I still find Teen Town much more challenging to play. Neither are particularly difficult but Teen Town has some tricky position shits. Dean Town is largely pentatonic with very conventional, common fingerings.
Finally, another Enfield Lionheart player!!
Mark...great Stuff...remember me of Mark King ;-)
best teacher!
Super AWESOME lesson!!
Ok not to be like that, but in the second bar of the phrase shown at 11:35, on the “a” of 3 is actually an A not a G#.
Can you do blue angels?
