Breaking down one of the greatest bass lines ever, "Daddy Got a Tesla" by Vulfpeck (from The Beautiful Game, 2016) and checking out the amazing bassist Joe Dart and what makes his playing so damn funky. I'll dig into the song, the bass, and even try my hand at playing the incredible breakdown in the middle of the song.
Check this one out, and be sure to visit sterlingbymusi... to check out the amazing Joe Dart Signature model bass I'm playing in this video!

i went with joe to summercamp when we were 12 and i can confirm that he was shredding already back then.
Not surprised. These guys don’t just appear overnight.
Joe was my inspiration to pick up the bass a little over a year ago and I haven’t missed a single day of playing yet!
Watch live takes of Dean Town. The audience singing along with Joe‘s highly complex bassline is pure joy.
True but let's not forget that woody goss wrote that bassline, I wouldn't call it "Joe's"
Bobby McFerrin talks about audiences across the globe being able to sing along with pentatonics.
I would love to see your view on the bass part of any of Kate Bush's songs! I'm listening to "Pull Out the Pin" while I write this but she has many creative and interesting bass recorded on many of her songs... Excellent video as always!! 👏🎸
Haha!!! irreparably posessed by the Dartian funky demon!! Great beginning dude!!
Jack Stratton has a comprehensive study of his sojourn in music. A force to witness, sir.
Short answer, yes 🔥 love the video!
Again, I love this channel because it illuminates my blind spots, and gives me new ways to think about bass playing.
Thank you for your additions to my essential viewing.
Same here.
There are players that you just jump on when you hear, Joe's one of them
Great video. Nice to give props to a current torch-bearer for the great traditions we all love and respect. And what better way than on his own signature bass. Gerrrr-oovy! ❤
I appreciate you playing the parts Joe played on the original demo video, very nice 🙏🏻
I was one of the first 500 or so to pre-order the new Sterling Joe Dart back in May. I can't wait for mine to ship in November! I love how they're getting them into the hands of some bass influencers who have made videos highlighting and hyping up an instrument that you can't even buy until someone decides to sell theirs on Reverb at the end of the year.
I also had sunglasses appear out of nowhere :0
Congratulations for your new bass, gorgeous. Excellent video about the great Joe Dart
Omg I love that intro 🤣
Kid at work just got this bass. I’ve got an older Ash body Sterling Ray34CA with Eastman pre and Aguilar pup. I also have a Sterling SB-14(MM Sterling copy). Both have 1.5” Jazz style necks. Joe’s the man!
Love Joe Dart and love your channel! You content is always informative and entertaining. Thank you!
I love it! And you sound amazing on that bass. Kudos! For your jazz band, may I suggest 1612? Still my favorite.
“Why’d you only put one knob on it? It has no versatility!”
“YOU have no versatility!”
I learn something new with every post. Thanks for the knowledge!
It's the shades that do it
Okay, there’s not enough 👍🏻 in the world for this. Laughing so hard at the intro - then vortexed into the flow as you get into Dart. Stellar as always.
Funny I just sawJoe play with Vulf 4 days ago in Berkeley. Show was so next level. I mean what can you say? These guys are really having fun. We all had a blast.
I started watching Joe Dart do StingRay demo videos for MusicMan a few years ago. Convinced me to buy StingRay and been listening to Joe Dart ever since.🔥🔥
Meh......hes alright.
But hes not Derek Smalls from Spinal Tap.
*Raybans appear... uncontrollably begins roosterneckin*
LoL, intro was a crack up.
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!! I've been waiting to hear you break down some Joe Dart licks. Great job!
Saw vulfpeck live this year, I can die happy now.
Please check out early Jamiroquai! Stuart Zender, the young bassist from their first few records was STELLAR.
Reminds me of the things I see that you like.
Check out Mr. Moon, Traveling without moving & Space Cowboy.
Congrats on the new purchase. The neck should be called 'The Dartboard' ! The intro was hilarious. Joe definitely has it going on, if l tried dancing to his grooves, l'd probably end up kicking myself in the a$$ !
I've got a fantastic Carlo Robelli D'Angelico Manhattan knock off. It is killing, but not all Carlo Robellis are great. Sterling (Music Man) on the other hand are all killing!! Consistent quality control and surprising vibe!! Great video!!
A bass player (and a band) that the University of Michigan can be proud of #GoBlue
Joe is amazing. Great video man!!!
I hear a decent amount of Chuck Rainey is his playing!!
Great as always Paul, it's a killer sounding bass! And yes time as a bass player is (almost) everything.
Your best video so far. Loved it! 👍
Gr8 thanks for the smiles!
I really like your videos! You can tell you put a lot of work into them. Thank you!
It should be said that he insisted that this signature model be affordable.
Lemmy Kilmister invented the graduation eleven on gain button, Joe Dart invented the graduation eleven on compressor.
I love the video and break down!
Can’t wait for my bass to arrive
Love the bass and the fact he went for something that was affordable. I still need a trip to Dean Town
Gotta say, I do find these fellas a bit irritating
Darts feel on 16th always blows my mind man, it just feels so obvious. Playing it is another story :/
Joe Dart is great!
He knows how to groove with the best of them!!
Long live Paul Jackson!!! Love the HeadHunters
Say hi to my son, Asher Taylor for me!
5:27 I think this model was the order-only limited run (4722 basses made to order), so people aren't going to be able to buy one from SBMM.
That bass reminds me of my childhood - I love the design & colors!
Too much! I love this!
I don't think I have ever even heard of this guy. Great video, thanks for posting. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Thank You Paul!!!!
Excellent. Just excellent.
Thank you sir.
PD Hi! I got a early Musicman Old Smothie. I put flats on it. Wow!! This Joe Dart bass is going where I have been going for years (and I've been paid to play bass for 56 years). Simple EQ and I feel it's better to get one great sound than fifty good sounds. Then work with that one great sound to get what ever I need, anything! BTW, my name is Jon.
Funny opening...
I know the first song I'm blaring when I go for a ride this evening... Yep I'm a daddy and I've got a Tesla.
Dart is amazing, but there’s lots like him yet unsung. I’ve been playing for almost 27 years but never owned a stingray until last year. It wasn’t all because of Dart, but he was on my list of players that made me pull the trigger
Picked up a Sterling RAY4HH back in February and it's been excellent, would expect the same from the Joe Dart signature model.
Saw Vulfpeck about 7 years ago! Still pretty funky now!
Beastly video! Thanks Paul.
C'mon Joe, gotta respond to this!
Chief Inspector released in 1985- Brilliant funky composition with a killer minimal bass line by none other than Wally Badarou. Bomaye!
I read "FUNKIEST" Etsuko Yakushimaru has some funky funk bass lines with some stank on it "Nekomeshi" is an example
Say what you will about Joe, but the kid did his homework.
hi love vulfpeck and hes such great bass player from john bevegard.
Capa in Pittsburgh PA?!?
Unpopular opinion…I much preferred the sound of Joe Dart’s Mexican Jazz Bass over his signature Music Man.
.....lol .... i also hear the Dolly Parton 9 to 5 song during the fill in .😁
I love Joe Dart. But, depending on the bubble you hang out in the most talked about player in recent years could be him or it could be Jon Stockman or Henrik Linder. Or Charles Berthaud if one's social media savvy.
Cool, you had to talk about joe, well done !
The wild thing is you could have answered this question with at least 10 different Joe Dart basslines. He’s just so funky and creative
I kinda been following Mohini Dey and Victor Wooten🤔
Question: What pickups are you using. Thanks
I love my Sterling 5. It's TERRIFIC!!!💯👑🎸🤘🏿🖤🌹🙏🏾
I never knew, basic ass bass would take people by surprise. I'll take the 90's over this crap any day of the week
Listen greatest bass line ever 1/2 seconds on freak out yes that freak out chic on the bridge 16 measures. Right before they got back in he does this little run on bass -- greatest bass line i ve ever heard half a second at most. Listen to freak out again. Seriously
No. Joe Dart is just hipster jam band funk.
Congratulations that bass is sweet! Sounds so good.
I was thinking, wow, sounds like a good Fender Jazz standby...There are 4722 sold and now orders are CLOSED! 😭
they will do another batch I bet, considering how well the first run sold.
Can we have a video on Paul Webb (talk talk), pleeeeeaaase?!
Haha great intro ;)
Is the potentiometer on that bass stacked?
The link to the bass says orders closed.
Joe Dart pigeon head incoming!
Full Quagmire right at the start
Best cold open ever! :D
Facts! Funky af
You’ve become Paul Dart!!!
🤣
Like always a great video
Dig the Walter Woods!
Joe Dart is the god of bass
Cheaper than Fodera…☮️
Awesome ❤
Thanks for the masterclass 👍 am absolutely digging this ☺️
Yeah….. no thanks……
Just saw Vulfpeck at their recording residency at the U.C. Theatre in Berkeley. They did not disappoint and, as usual, Joe stole the show with absolute funky dominance! The new material is very cool, but definitely leans in an old school (think 70s yacht rock, but a bit grimier.)
Quick answer = no
Walter Woods amp, yes😎 Another brilliant breakdown, thank you😎😉👍🏽
I never heard of 'em.
