You truly care for someone when you can make one’s favorite dish and when the cook hates it! Kudos to Arne for enduring the anchovies they are not my favorite either.
There's no Christmas without Janssons for me, but I know it's not to everybody's taste,. However you can replace the anjovies with smoked ham or even chorizo, both are delicious. Happy holidays 🎄
My mom would basically do this with the leftover Christmas ham. She would slice the potatoes (scallop) but it was essentially the same. I would like to try it with the anchovies though.
@@FunAtDisney Hi, just be aware that the anjovies used in swedish "Janssons Temptation" is not the same produce as italian anjovies, however it might be just as good, I actually think I need to try that😊
Love lighting the Advent Candles. We need joy, hope, and faith/longing in the world today. Not sure about anchovies, but I love Scandinavian cooking. And the old cookbooks….
It cracks me up that Arne, who's so facile with so many other tools, cannot master handling kitchen tools. His potato is the equivalent of Carlos' sock. Love you two!
Its a tail, says Arne. Its not a tail, says Carlos. Oh how I love to hear your friendly disagreements. You both are good examples of how to love each other, and our differences! Love this!
I love that Arne says that you should make smaller portions for Carlos and also that to try it without the anchovies that he will like and you both like the ideas.
Arne and Carlos. I always enjoy watching of you preparing meals in the kitchen. Both of you work well together and make cooking enjoyable. Your sense of humor appear to come naturally,🤣 Arne, your dislike for anchovies and your facial expressions were priceless.
A lovely 🇸🇪🇺🇸 Swedish-American woman would often bring fabulous fish dishes to our potlucks held at the local Waldorf School. She had mastered the art of cooking salmon.
Love your knitting tips. I have knitted for years, but find that you come up with new and valuable tips. Thank you! It was fun watching you create this dish. I watched my Swedish Grandma cook, and your cooking together brings back many wonderful memories! Thank you!
Jansson’s Frestelse is the most delicious dish ever. I used to tell my American husband about it and he was disgusted by the thought of anchovies. Come Christmas I made the dish and called it potato gratin, no reminding him about the special ingredient. I asked him how he liked it and he said it was the best potato dish he had ever had, he absolutely loves it, even after he was told the whole story. Strange that Arne doesn’t like it, I thought Norwegians where even more of fish eaters than Swedes. For all of you anchovies haters out there, remember that anchovies is the very important ingredient in an authentic Caesar dressing, delicious and it is also fantastic on pizza, which they eat in Italy all the time, I get hungry just thinking about it.
There is a dish I grew up with that is an old Canadian staple. Suet dough rolled flat and spread with leftover beef, potatoes, carrots and onions. The dough is spread with butter and the mix (previously put through an old fashioned mill) is spread on top and then rolled up in a clean sheet and boiled for 2 hours. It was a way to use leftovers to feed a large family. Nothing was wasted. It is absolutely delicious but no one outside my family seems to “get it”😊 I truly believe we should remember these humble recipes and the frugal wartime ancestors who developed them. I just found you and am a new subby. Thank you.
Oh, I love anchovies. What a wonderful dish. Arne is a really good sport to assist with the creation of something he doesn't care for. He truly shows the spirit of the season:)
Looks delish! We make an angel hair pasta with an anchovy/garlic/olive oil paste for Christmas Eve. My dad said it would guarantee you a seat in church (because of the garlic/anchovy aroma)! 😂
I liked the idea of using the cheese slicer to cut the butter. I am with Camp Arne and do not care for anchovies. It is good for Carlos to have a dish he enjoys at the holidays, especially.
TIP… I am vegetarian and hubby not. We love casseroles, I make half with chicken and half no chicken, mark with toothpick and we are both happy. One pan.❤️🇨🇦❤️
I'm with Arne on this one. It's hard for me to get past the smell. Years ago my husband and I were in France enjoying lunch at a delightful restaurant on the Mediterranean. Suddenly, this smell filled the restaurant. It was only 1 diner with anchovies. Whew! What a smell!
My great grandparents emigrated from Sweden in about 1904. Our family grew and grew, until there was quite a crowd of aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents celebrating on Christmas Eve. The lutefisk and pickled herring were a "no go" for us kids, and I have a recollection of another dish that sounds like Janssons. I tried it once because it smelled so good....but surprise...it had little fish in it! I imagine that I made a face like Arne. Of course there was plenty of other good things to eat, and I cherish the memories. Thank you for bringing them back for me, even if I didn't like the fish.
Carlos, you love this so much, I really wish you had cut a square of the dish to put in another container for your friends and kept a generous portion for yourself as well. It was breaking my heart that you planned to give it all away when I saw how happy it made you.
I don't speak Swedish but want to learn more about Swedish cooking, so I ordered the cookbook. Thank you for this recipe. Love you guys. (from BC Canada)
I am no fan of anchovies, so I'm on team Arne on this one! I certainly enjoyed watching you though. I'm all for keeping the family tradition going! ❤️🎄😘
Looks delicious! I will try it with anchovies. About 4 years ago I went to an annual picnic with people in the food industry, home cooks and “foodies” . Lots of delicious and unusual food. The most surprisingly delicious dish was candied anchovies! Maybe that’s the anchovy dish for Arne!!
Carlos’s face says it all!! I can smell and taste the dish just looking at him. Although my Grandfather came from Sweden 🇸🇪 I have never had this dish.
Frame 30:15 says it all. Arne is scarred from the dish while Carlos is in bliss. The dish looks good. First, I might try it without anchovies and later with it. I’m happy for you Carlos ; it’s nice to have personal comfort food. You’re a great sport for helping Arne and it’s best to look away quickly.😊
I delighted in this whole episode - thank you! "Butter is the best spice." Indeed. I can't wait to make this. I love every single ingredient... including anchovies!
You may remember that although I am of 100% Norwegian born, lutefisk has NEVER crossed my lips, although it has been prepared in our family every year. I am glad I am not Swedish, because something would just have to give, and I might have to resort to lutefisk after all! Thanks for the tutorial. However, your recipe for the oatmeal protein buns are the BEST! Love them, love you two and all you do!
I am team Arne on this. My husband and children love deep fried crispy anchovies. In Guyana they call them coco belly. For me it doesn’t matter how they are made I do not care for at all.
Oh Carlos! How can you be so cruel to Arne? But I must say it is a beautiful looking dish when it is cooked! If I made it I would leave the onions out and try bacon as a substitute for the fish. Arne this was a true sign of loyalty to your partner, to even be in the kitchen, much less help Carlos with the assembly of the casserole! Merry Christmastime 💚❤🌲
thank you so much for including the recipe in the video description - not a fan but not hater of anchovies - when we were kids we referred to them as hairy fish
Hey, Arne, consider getting a mandoline for slicing and making julienne pieces. Get also a cut proof glove to use with it, and with your grater. These things have transformed my life.
This is similar to scalloped potatoes here but with ham. I would divide part of the liquid before adding the anchovy liquid & make Arne a pan without the fish.
Arne, you could always fry up some bacon with the onions, instead of the anchovies! Then you still wouldn't need to add any salt. I'm not an anchovy fan, either, but I'm definitely going to try this with bacon.🥓🥓🥓
Arne, your face when seeing the anchovies is just how I feel about them lol! I no longer eat fish, but when I did, I couldn’t face anchovies for some reason, though my cat loves them lol! Good for you, Carlos, enjoy your slice of Heaven 😊 Wishing you both en glad tredje advent. Ha det bra (be well), Sally 🌹
I think this is the first time I have seen Arne NOT snacking on what is being made! LOL ;)
Carlos "Yum!" Arne "Oh my God" lol!
That look of bliss on Carlos's face 🤣🤣
You are living proof that we can love each other without liking the same food !
Stealth eater Carlos.
"Butter is the best spice" - LOVE IT! The motif is your VW Beetle with the Christmas tree on top reminiscent of your "experience"!
Lol Carlos is soooooo happy!😂

I loved this episode. Never seen carlos so happy while arne is repulsed but still willing to go along.
Well done Arne ....you are a pro at cooking .....Carlos you are a great teacher in cooking .....love your cooking shows ..🥰🥰🥰💞💞💞💞
We call that Janssons Temptation, I am right up there with Carlos - sheer heaven
I'm with Arne - I would love to eat this without the anchovies! But I am glad that Carlos is enjoying the treat!
Been watching since covid love your knitting tips what I love the most is your teaching us not to stress if you make mistakes you guys are great
I was on the edge of my chair when Carlos put the match back in the box 😅
“Was it good?” 🤣🤣Arne is going to pass out. 😂 And Carlos is going to enjoy his favorite dish, no matter what. Love you guys.

Anchovies dont really tast fishy but gives it umami flavor
The opera singer Pelle Janzon used to serve people this back in the 1800s - still a classic 150+ years later!
Arne is actually a very good cook. I'm sure he learned all his kitchen skills from his mother and grandmother.
Don't ask Arne!❤❤❤❤❤

The beetle with a decorated tree and Xmas balls! Yay! I love everything about this Advent!

I love anchovies, even on my pizza! This recipe is similar to one of my favorite ways to make potatoes and I can't wait to try it with anchovies.
I love anchovies on my pizza too. Its just me who would like this. My son who is 14 would hate it. All the more for me lol

Does Arne dislike Surströmming as much as Janssons Frestelse? The former is truly an acquired taste!!
