Sprouting Broccoli and Friends in a Two-Tiered Seed Sprouter

- This is a clean and easy way to sprout broccoli, alfalfa, radish, clover, or any small seeds. The two-tiered tray system allows you to put two different types of seeds in each level, and the vented top allows for good air circulation. I found it easier to rinse the seeds in this tray design than with mason jars, but its capacity is limited. It does look nicer on the counter than upside down mason jars or a colander covered with a towel. And it was so easy to use; no muss no fuss.

I've been looking for a simple and clear video on how to use a sprouter and I weirdly didn't find that many. Your video is exactly what i was looking for and really helped me, thank you!
Excellent demonstration! No useless yakety-yak but content hard as a rock and clear as a crystal! 🙂
Your idea of stacking four trays is phenomenal! Smartest hack ever! Thank you!
I am brand new to sprouting. I ordered this 2 tiered sprouting box and received it 2 days ago. I just have to figure out where to go to get my seeds now. Thank you for your video.
I just bought this system, you have the best most thorough video, thank you so much for posting it.
Thanks Amy, I appreciate it!
wonderful explanation, thank you so much
Thanks for the great video. I've never grown sprouts before, so this was very helpful. I got the same sprouter from Amazon (Gardens Alive! Two-tiered sprouter) and bought alfalfa and mung bean seeds from Todd's Seeds. The instructions helped talk me through the process. So thankful!
Hi, Susan. I also have the same sprouter. Can you let me know if you have any molding problem and what you did about it? Thanks.
Betty Spencer Hey, Betty! I have not had problems with mold. I make sure to keep it in a dark, dry place, and rinse/water the seeds at least twice a day. Hope that helps!
THANK you for this amazing video! Ordering one now and can't wait to sprout!
Thanks for posting this video! Great idea to separate the seeds into two bowls before so you don’t have to try to device them evenly after soaking. Also great idea to measure the water.
Love all of your videos! You demo and explain everything so clearly.
Thank you JAK!
I’ve been adding a big handful to my morning smoothie for the last year! Love them mixed with wild Maine blueberries
I have had the same container as you for many years, not used in sometime. Bit the bullet yester and soaked broccoli and alfalfa and they are now in the tray. Thank you for the remined
You always do a very nice job explaining things. The one thing I'm wondering about....when I was researching seeds to order recently, I saw some reviews about Todd's.....it caused me not to order from that company. Nothing says they are organic. Organic is recommended for sprouting because if they aren't, there's a possibility of pesticides being used. Also, a reviewer said they found out Todd's were from China. I really don't know for sure...I'm just saying what I read. But I wanted organic & grown in the USA. I'm grateful to you for this demo. I looked at sprouting means....I've always used Mason jars & wondered about other methods. After watching this demo, I'm convinced the jars are much simpler......I know you use jars, too, so you know how easy it is to just dump water out of the jars instead of lifting trays off a bottom tray & then gingerly getting the full tray of water over to the sink w/out spilling it...…& knowing me, I'd spill it ! ha ha Also, after the trays have been lifted up so the bottom tray can be emptied, the seed trays are dripping. I'll just keep using the jars. No dripping mess. I got plastic sprouting lids like you use & love them. Another advantage to the jars that's obvious to me is, everything can be done in the jars, including soaking.
Thanks for the feedback! I agree that I don't want pesticides and herbicides in my food sources if I can help it. The term "organic" in the past was used very loosely, just as the term "green" or "lite", so we need to be able to trust the label. I would rather buy seeds from USA than China and probably the labeling is more reliable from a USA source....so thanks for that information! The Mountain Green/True Leaf company is in Utah, I use a lot of their seeds. I also buy from Burpee. Obviously I need to do some more research on the source of the seeds...thank you!
@@TikkiOOOYou're so welcome ! That's what I love about RUclips & the ability to have a conversation. We can learn from each other. It's terrific! Friday I started some more broccoli seeds in a wide mouth Mason jar...but it is completely straight....most have "shoulders", if you know what I mean. I've noticed the straight jar makes dumping out the water easier ! It can't get "caught" on the shoulder of the jar. I've ordered seeds from The Sprout House & , most recently, from Jacob's Ladder/Cool Beans 'n' Sprouts in Missouri. I can tell you the rep I spoke w/at Cool Beans was so friendly & helpful....super nice...& boy, they are prompt getting your seeds out to you. They are organic. It's a small company. I like supporting places like that. I appreciate you telling me who you've ordered from in Utah....thank you!
Very helpful , thank you very much , me and my mom were looking to start this process after getting this gifted in the mail,
You are a good teacher, this is the most informative thanks x
Thanks Joolz, I appreciate that!
Thankyou! Very informative. The two tiered sprouter is definitely more convenient than using mason jars.
SortaDopeIGuess, thank you! I sprout many things in that little gadget! I will have a video on Alfalfa Sprouts in the 2 tiered sprouter coming out later this week. Thank you for watching!
Great video. I have the same sprouter, and just found it easier if you just remove the base and run the trays under the faucet. Thanks again.
Thanks Lawrence, great idea!
I loved your video. Easy to understand and thorough. Thank you so much 🌸
Great video I found a seed sprouter for $1 and am very excited now about growing my sprout....Thanks
Dyan F good luck and have fun!
I already have to 2 tiered grower, but I ordered the seeds from your link. That mix looks yummy. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you for this informative video! This is a my first attempt at growing spouts and this is the spouter I bought. I wish I’d seen your video last night. I didn’t think to measure out in two bowls so I’ll have to try to divide my seeds into the tray. At least I’m well informed now, whether these take or not.
I bought mine about a year ago. Going to use it this weekend!
Great job on this video. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! I literally just bought this product, and then found your video. As a newbie (never tried), I really appreciate it!
Thank you so much for the explanation, you was very clear, I’m going to try it at home now.
Thank you so much for your video. I will definitely try to do at home .
Good luck Dhammi, and enjoy!
Awesome video...great explanation.
Just found your channel very pleased with your detailed information to sprouting I love sprouts and love that I can make them myself ! Thank u
Thanks Teneisha, and they are good for you too!
Thank you! Great explanation!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for leaving feedback!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you very much, Tikki
I am going to purchase this sprouter now.
Thanks Khanh, its great for sprouting. Or you can use a mason jar with a strainer lid. Just make sure to rinse your sprouting seeds twice a day, morning and night. Thanks for the comment!
It needs sun to be green and grow beautiful
Thank you for this detailed video. It inspired me to sprout. I'm gonna go to the grocery to buy a sprouted one already since I'd like to taste it first.
Thanks for the comment, and good luck with sprouting! They all taste different, so enjoy! Radish sprouts are spicy if you like that.
Wow that was an awesome presentation! Thanks so much for posting!!
Ann Maes thank you for the support, I appreciate it! The sprouts are delicious, one of my favorites to throw into a salad. Thanks for watching!
I sooooo appreciate your video! Thank you!
Great video ! Thank you so heathy with great info
Susan Gage Thank you! I grow this every week so I always have fresh sprouts for my salad in addition to the microgreens. Thank you for the nice comment!
Wow! SO helpful!
I have a similar stacking sprouter but never really knew the best way to use it. I like yours too and may have to get one. ☺ You have such great tips!
Thanks Just Floating, I appreciate the feedback!
I have a round system like this (also bought on Amazon years ago). Sometimes I use a coffee filter under the seeds to keep the really tiny ones from falling through, but I usually want to cut the roots off anyway.
Thank you for your videos!
A coffee filter is a great idea, thanks for the feedback!
Nicely done
Thank you Gary!
Very informative. No details skipped. Good, fast-moving script. THANKS!
I am still curious how you do last step of harvest ...
Do you use scissors to separate sprouts from the plastic floor?
Or do gently pull-out with all roots intact?
very nice video. thank you very much.
Thanks, just what I needed.
Thanks for the detailed video. The only question I have is, after day 3 should I leave it in light ? Thanks
hi do u now need soil or compost to grow the seeds? or does the seeds contain that? im little lost new to this
Thank you! Just placed my order for the sprouter 😃
Good luck Britt...what are you going to sprout? My favorite is the broccoli, or salad mix, but alfalfa is good too....what is your pleasure???
Great video! Thanks so much :)
I did this method and the seeds had such a bad odor that I threw it out. Not sure what I did wrong I rinsed twice a day but I did keep under a light.
Where can i buy seed sprouter
I know this video is pretty old, but if you put a paper towel on the seed trays, they won't fall through.
Hello, I'm sprouting alfalfa and rainbow radish sprouts in a single tray sprouter i purchased on Amazon.
Do I have to keep the lid on everyday while they grow?
Should I keep the tray on the kitchen counter away from direct light because I've heard some people keep it in a dark place?
Thank you!
Dont you cover the sprouter like what you did with sprouting in mason jars?
Sorry ...this system/.set up looks weird ...the roots from the top tray going into the tray underneath????
I made my own sprouter from transparent plastic food boxes
Gloria...I love DIY projects....if you can explain what you did, I would love to hear. Or post a video of your sprouter on your channel and link it here so we can see. Thanks for the comment!
@@TikkiOOO ruclips.net/video/d9xtsuJfY1Q/видео.html I took the idea from this tutorial. But I didn't use drill, I took awl, heated it on fire and poked holes into the bottom of the boxes. I only wonder do the sprouting seeds need ventilation, if so, I probably could make additional holes in the walls.
From what I’ve been seeing they are super thirsty if the roots start growing down like that.
What was the name of the other site? Gerdy's? Thanks!
I wanted this, and have ordered it twice. Both times they were broken. Whoever is packing the boxes only put padding on one side of the box. I am so upset. I have to drive 30 minutes to a UPS store to return them. So frustrating.
Janell, so sorry to hear that. Mine came fine from Amazon, I bought it a year ago or more. Maybe they have a new distributer? Sorry for your troubles!
still using this today ?
Actually yes! I have it going with mustard seeds this week. With the corona virus its hard to go shopping, so sprouts really fit on the menu very nicely!
@@TikkiOOO new update video ? we miss ya ! lol
is it easy to remove them intact from the sprouter since the roots have grown through?
Some come right out, some you have to rip out, both delicious!
@@TikkiOOO Thanks for that reply. I was just wondering if I could use it for sprouting seeds for hydroponics!
@@theuglykwan I wouldn't since the roots will probably be damaged.
Are sprouts & microgreens equal in nutrition?
Hi Rick, sorry...I don't know the answer to that.
Can you use sunflower seeds in there? Also can you mix vinegar in the water to prevent mold or maybe in the overnight soak?
Good question since I love sunflowers as microgreens. I've never "sprouted" them, I only grow them in soil and eat them at them as microgreens and they are delicious. Have you sprouted them using the mason jar method or any other method? If yes, then I would guess that this would work too, but you might have a mess with the shells. Let me know. AS for the vinegar, I don't see why not, you can also use a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide in your water to prevent mold. I rinse multiple times a day and have not had a mold issue, but you might if the conditions are not optimal and you don't rinse often. Remember, if it smells bad, it probably is....throw it out if it smells bad! Your sprouts should have a fresh and clean smell....and they are delicious.
Tikki O. Thanks for replying. On Friday I did place sunflower seeds in a mason jar and I did soak them overnight in a 1to10 ratio of peroxide. I rinsed off twice a day and they are sprouting lovely. I will let you know how they came out. Also this morning, I placed some lentils in the same sprouter you're using after soaking them in baking soda. I came back to your video to see if you set yours in a dark place or not. My apartment gets no sun so I just placed them on my wall unit. Let me know if I should move them. Thank you for all your videos. By the way, Friday I also used your sunflower/dirt method and they are looking good as well. Sorry I wrote so much. Bye now.
Please keep us updated on your sunflowers and lentils. At the sprout level they don't need light, but for microgreens they do. I love the sunflower microgreens, just make sure to harvest them when there are just two leaves spread out, once it starts growing more leaves the sunflowers are not as tender and delicious, and then they grow into a plant....... Also, for the first few days you should invert another tray on top of the seeds that are in soil to put some weight on it, and let the sunflowers work to push through the soil and the tray on top. The more they work at growing, the more the hulls fall off....which is what you want come harvest time. Keep us posted on your progress!
Tikki O. Will do. Thanks.
Mold usually comes if the spouts are growing in an area that is too warm, and not getting rinsed and watered enough, but it takes a few days to get the mold. I have been sprouting for about 40 years....never found a use for vinegar for sprouting.
bitter is better have more nutrients
No pain no gain?
cool. how much is it?
Hi HPRV it was around $10 when I bought it, not sure what it is now, Amazon keeps changing its prices.
Thanks
Thank you for the great video. Question, do I have to cover the sprouter with a towel to keep the light out? My kitchen doesn’t have a lot of natural light. Thank you so much
yes, or put it in low light. Sprouts don't need light, and for the first couple of days I cover with a kitchen towel or put in a dark place. The last day I let it green up in the light. enjoy!
Tikki O. I have one last question. My sprouts have little white hairs coming from the stems. Is this mold? I’ve been very good about rinsing and draining them throughout the growing process. If in fact this is mold are my sprouts kaput?
The jar method is far simpler and hence wastes less time with the rinsing procedures. I don't go for what's nicer looking on the kitchen bench; I go for time saving and efficiency. Sprouting equipment is not meant to be put on display and be admired like a flower vase anyway.
Yes. I like the masontop sprouting lids. Very simple.
