The irony now is that everyone is pushing digital games, where there literally is no box art. So the incentive to try and craft legitimately good artwork is going down faster than ever.
A single minute in and it blows my mind that I stumbled upon this with less than 100 views, you're editing and style is exactly on point I hope RUclips catches you on the algorithm wave and you finally get that sweet ride you're looking for. That's a scription is there just so I can watch that barrel pit you deep my bro!!!
The way Fallout: New Vegas handled their boxart was subtle but notable. The previous games just had a CG render of the dude in the strongest armour as their boxart, but NV managed to pay homage to this style whilst making something different. Sure, it's the dude I'm the coolest armour, but this time it's not power armour, and you can see New Vegas in the background, luring you into the world. Fallout 4 then fucked it up by just having it by having it be armour again. At its core it's a tiny change but really shows the amount of care that went into the game as a whole
The Resistance 3 box always stuck with me as a later box art that was genuinely great. Stuck with me despite never even playing it! Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age also has incredible reverse art.
Excellent video! I think my favorite box art has to be the original Kingdom Hearts 1 on the PS2. The huge heart-shaped moon in the night sky shining a faint light onto all of the characters with the town in the background all just looks amazing in my opinion.
The original box art for Ico compared to the American release is a great example of this trend. Also, even though it's just the model of one of the enemies in games, I adore the box art for Shadow of the Colossus
I agree with the sentiments about boxarts devolving over time. Brand recognition is more marketable and promotes the game better. Although I think a heavy influence on changing boxart is digital storefronts. Sometimes a simple mockup captures the eye more than a whole landscape shot. Although personally I like that elaborate stuff. If they can mix simplicity and a good background, like Elden Ring or Subnautica, I'm all for it. Still think they can be better for sure imo. Reverse cover art is best art
Hearing the music from the jungle track on Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver made my ears perk up like a German Shepherd... that games soundtrack is burned in my memory like a box of crayons left on the dashboard of the family minivan on a July afternoon
Some Japanese Mega Drive games had full size cover art, one piece going from front to back. A few examples are Bare Knuckle III, The Super Shinobi II and Altered Beast. The Neo Geo AES had some amazing cover art as well. Fatal Fury 3, Baseball Stars 2 and Crossed Swords for example. Also remember NES having some fine art work, like Double Dragon II, Super C and Wrath of the Black Manta. There's loads more, like the classic big boxes for old PC games. First coming to mind are Starlancer, Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Planescape: Torment. There were also the arcades and while not box cover art, some cabinets were a piece of art themselves. Standard uprights like Ghouls 'N Ghosts and Samurai Shodown II, or bigger ones using peripherals such as Galaxy Force and Beast Busters. There also were the posters, ads, flyers, magazines, books and comics and the like, and with thousands of games released, it's a huge collection of art.
My favorite video game box art is probably the one for the game Psychonauts. The art style of it is just so eye catching and has so many interesting things happening in it without ever feeling like the devs are desperate to make you buy the game. Yet despite that the game sold poorly at launch compared to games with the same exact black shadow of a man over white background box art
I personally enjoyed the toy army men games for Nintendo 64, I feel like the box art was really cool I remember one with a toy soldier and a spider that really impacted me as a kid making me want to have it so bad at the local Hollywood video!
Outer Wilds has a really good one and in my opinion gets even better after u finish the game cause you start to fully "understand" it. Btw, really good video, I'm glad RUclips algorithms showed you to me, keep up the good work
The sad reality being.... Box art needs boxes. Are we entering a post-physical media world? It's hard to quantify - and I for one, would deeply miss box art. Even the bad ones. Food for thought.
You gotta look up the Amnesia: Dark Descent box art which was so horrendously bad it actually ruined one of the monsters in the game by making it look like a mutated duck and put the "protagonist" on there with a lantern raised and a really confused expression on his face. This is especially bad when you think about all of the amazing unique and unsettling set pieces in the game they could have simply used the copy/paste CGI method on and made a MUCH better cover. YOU'RE NEVER EVEN SUPPOSED TO GET A GOOD LOOK AT THE MONSTERS IN-GAME SO WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY BLAST IT ON THE BOX ART IN BRIGHT LIGHT!?
ngl I was confused reading this because I remember the box art for the game is just a simple rose on the ground, didn't know it had an alternate box art and holy shit you right it looks so bad lmao
This feels like a video that would make sense if it was 2014, very unfortunately it’s 2024 now and most games are digital downloads. I miss the era that physical games were relevant much less the box art.
Love when RUclipsrs complain about game companies being lazy. But are RECYCLING THE SAME EXACT TOPICS I swear if I e see another “video game box art le bad” I’m going to have an aneurysm.
I never liked the games where its just BASIC PEOPLE. Halo? Who cares. GTA? yawn. Skylanders? DUDE! THEY GOT TREES WITH HAMMERS AND CRYSTAL WAIFU DRAGONS!
No one saw the box art 40 years ago because 99% of the people just played pirated games and saw the box art only in magazines. But yes some of these covers a peaces of art, really. And! In my 8 year old eyes the game sometimes ACTUALLY LOOKED LIKE THE BOX ART. Yes. It helped.
The funniest box art has to be Yakuza 3's in the USA. They just put half of the protagonist's face on the side and that's it!
and the european version is the opposite side of kiryus face
The irony now is that everyone is pushing digital games, where there literally is no box art. So the incentive to try and craft legitimately good artwork is going down faster than ever.
Was just about to post this. It really is the world we live in. Like Album art, completely irrelevant these days.
Kind of. We have thumbnails which are basically the same thing but for digital
@@Benzinilinguinemeh, i think Spotify still keeps album art important

I feel like this problem is only going to get even worse with consoles that are digital only. No need for a box therefore no need for box art...

Your editing and style is some of the best I've seen on RUclips. Hope your channel skyrockets soon! Needs more love.

Oh yeah, Morbius for Nintendo DS. Peak gaming

Doom games have always had my favorite art 👌

I think that's an excellent point. There is definitely some merit to the simplicity.
Elden ring box art does slap
Hearing the music from the jungle track on Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver made my ears perk up like a German Shepherd... that games soundtrack is burned in my memory like a box of crayons left on the dashboard of the family minivan on a July afternoon
Under rated, subbed before blow up
Same

What is one of the saddest things about box art for me is, the cool pictures of gameplay that always sold me were actually on the back of the box
Some Japanese Mega Drive games had full size cover art, one piece going from front to back. A few examples are Bare Knuckle III, The Super Shinobi II and Altered Beast. So glad the algorithm blessed me with finding your channel. Lol'd several times and subbed
bro your content is funny af you're gonna blow up soon
Ain't no way you snuck Plok!'s box art into the bad box art category 💀💀💀
Where's Super Metroid then???
Just discovered your channel through your survivor2299 video because the new fallout show got me back in this content. I love it, subscribed.
This is excellent . Subbed!
I used to love the atari 2600 covers when I was a kid. Berzerk and Vanguard were a couple of my favorites.
4:38 Nah, that ain't a box artist problem. Blame the show existing.
5:19 you did _not_ just try to sneak in Plok like that. Apologize right now.
6:48 I thought everyone but me had forgotten about the existence of Sneakers. Terrible game.
Medievil was a legit childhood staple and I have the case as a poster 😅
I personally enjoyed the toy army men games for Nintendo 64, I feel like the box art was really cool I remember one with a toy soldier and a spider that really impacted me as a kid making me want to have it so bad at the local Hollywood video!
with the Mario and Luigi series you can pinpoint exactly when they gave up
Outer Wilds has a really good one and in my opinion gets even better after u finish the game cause you start to fully "understand" it.
Btw, really good video, I'm glad RUclips algorithms showed you to me, keep up the good work
As Carl von Clausewitz said: Box art is just the continuation of content by other means.
The sad reality being.... Box art needs boxes. Are we entering a post-physical media world? It's hard to quantify - and I for one, would deeply miss box art. Even the bad ones.

I literally can't believe Rockstar Games don't fall into the CGI thing for box arts and artworks.
Great content! Liked and subscribed

I swear if I e see another “video game box art le bad” I’m going to have an aneurysm.
I have never seen another video on this subject. You may have, but this is my first time seeing one.
This video deserves an extra zero on the view count.
I never liked the games where its just BASIC PEOPLE. Halo? Who cares. GTA? yawn. Skylanders? DUDE! THEY GOT TREES WITH HAMMERS AND CRYSTAL WAIFU DRAGONS!
