Hey everyone! I hope you liked the video checking out the OPAMP Big Muff. I have had a lot of fun checking out gear on the channel lately and wanted to do another fun pedal contest/giveaway for all of the Patreon supporters making it possible to check out gear on the channel. Thanks for supporting Fuzzlord on Patreon and I'll announce the winner Friday Jan 28th 2023! www.patreon.com/fuzzlordeffects
I have a ton of vintage fuzz pedals, and a ton of the boutique versions of them too. I always end up coming back to my $69 OpAmp Big Muff. Always. I've been stacking mine with a RAT as a boost for leads, but I might have to try out my Doom Screamer. FWIW, Eddie Glass was using an OpAmp Big Muff reissue the last time I saw Nebula...
Great comparison Jason. Totally agree with OpAmp aggressive tone versus smoother maybe 'thinner' tone of the NYC muff. And it may sound ridiculous - but the initial thought in my head was how much better to my ears and I how much more liked my fav muff - the black russian.
Thanks for the comparison, I was really surprised how well NYC Big Muff pairs with an overdrive in front of it, making the sound a lot clearer while still retaining the heat. Really cool combo.
If you can find one, the JHS modded version is amazing. It has a low mid boost knob that really fills out the sound nicely. I pair mine with an SD1 or BD2 to tighten it up a bit.
It also adds a 3-way toggle that allows you to get gated, spitty sounds. You know that, but I bet the others commenters don't. It's my favorite Fuzz apart from the FZ-2. I run a Soul Food into it and it's AMAZING for stoner rock and stoner metal sounds.
I can see putting this in front of a Dronemaster for bone-powdering saturation. I really dig all the different muffs, but the op amp is just so gnarly! Great comparison and I adore that Dunable! Cheers!
I'm liking that classic NYC Big Muff more, but the main thing I learned today was when I got a boutique type fuzz from a kid on youtube, and he described it as being based around a Big Muff circuit he wasn't really telling me much at all!
I've crushed bass to death with this little monster for years! Usually with a Sonic Stomp always on. Now, since I found a used Doom Screamer a couple weeks back, I'm experimenting pushing the OpAmp Big... oh, so do you! just got there in the video... AND... your Fuzzlord EQ pedal! My bass has dual onboard Wolfrose pre-amps, so too much dirt goes into total chaos through my 1000w Orange Bass Terror pretty quick. Since I picked up the OpAmp, I don't use my NYC anymore or my Bass Muff. Let our guitarist jam my NYC since his glitched out and traded my Bass Muff towards a Keely Bassist Compressor.
I use it w/ the Earthquaker Tentacle and Arrows before the BMP run it into an Idiotbox Han Taun I use as a preamp. When I want to get really nuts I’ll click on either the OCD (sometimes I’ll sub a PoT) or Greer 390 (booteek OD250). For total annihilation, all of that runs into a Swollen Pickle I also use sometimes as a filthy preamp. I also run a Lofi Junky and a big box DMM and those have gain circuits.
I dont particulary care for EITHER ( but YOU make em both pretty good! 🤘💥) I guess I never really got a great tone out if them on my OWN (with my rig) I'm pretty much a Rat >Green Russian reissue guy (I really like the EQD Hizumitas, too)
I had a vintage unit for years. Turns out those things are almost impossible to control. If you for the classic Pumpkins tone, there you go. But for doom tones I always gravitated more towards a Green Muff or Rams Head. The op amp muff has a noticeable high frequency that really sticks out. At bed room level this might be ok. But at high levels at concerts or rehearsals this frequency sounds like shit. Somewhere around 2-3,5k. Whoever likes it, good for you. I don't like it, never will.
It’s the NYC for me. The NYC with the doom screamer is perfect.
Cheers Adam!! 🙏
My favorite iteration by far
Hell yeah!

Thanks Mike! 🙏

I wasn’t a huge fan of my Bass Big Muff until I put a TS type pedal in front.
Ooooh yeah. Love those op-amp muffs. So aggressive and chainsawy. Great demo!
Thank you! 🙏

I’ll keep an eye out! 🙏
BD-2 before the muff?
I usually put before. But, some people like it after. Just personal preference.@@LawGone1

great sounding take on the muff
I think both are good in their own way, but I prefer the NYC muff over the OpAmp version.
Cheers man!!

Big fan of this version...but hey I dig nearly all of em. Lol
Same!

It would be interesting to see a shootout type video between the riff gaurdian and the doom screamer or should I say….boostout 🙌🏼
Good idea!
Instant sub.
thank you!
Fran Blanch, NYC Big Muff designer and Frantone pedals designer. Peach Fuzz anyone?
I always describe the op-amp as sharper than a normal big muff. But it can get woolly with the right settings
I prefer the keeley Moon op amp to every big muff variant
Same. It seems to have a bigger range of compatibility with guitars and amps as well as an incredible filter. It's like 3 pedals in 1.
@@erikberg8352 seems we are the minority
Best version of the best muff topology, in my humble opinion
I like the classic more but they both sound good.
For sure!
Swapping C1 and C5 for 10uF caps, you get some crazy bass drive
I definitely dig that og pedal. Op is maybe just too muddy for me.
It’s a classic!
I dont particulary care for EITHER ( but YOU make em both pretty good! 🤘💥)

I want to love a Big Muff. If only they could chug just a little......that's why Fuzz Face for me. The old one has a richness lacking in the op amp.
You could try by using a tube screamer in front of the Muff. It's worked great for me!
Fuzz faces are rad too!
My money is on the more aggressive, brighter opamp big muff sitting in a mix much better.
I love the NYC - but that's probably because I've been using one for over 20 years. However, I will someday own a green or black russian.
The nyc bigmuff sounds much better to me
Dude, this pedal begs for FET120 to be put after it.
Next time! 🙏
This or green Russian for stoner?
MF-4
@@FuzzlordEffects Yeah, but the price...wooh
