@@nastamasterx Thx man, love my PXL-8, I think has the best value/money ratio among the switcher. I hope they'll improve with a version with 8 switchers instead of four.
@@JayWater Well, I had another muff on my board, I had the T-73 you can ear in this video ruclips.net/video/cWnMRaPhxMA/видео.html. Now I have a Ram's Head on my board. I think I'll do a more accurate comparison between the two of them.
Triangle: Fuzzy high end, a bit reminiscent of a Fuzz Face. Great for sustained 60's-esque solos. Ram's Head: Bold, loud, and articulate. Great for singing lead lines and complex chord work. Green Russian: Huge low end and lots of mids. Great for heavy riffing. Op-Amp: Raspy, chainsaw texture with Tone Bypass switch for added versatility. Great for overall aggressive guitar work.
After watching a dozen Big Muff comparisons, glad I found this one…wish I'd had seen it first and saved some time. Was originally leaning towards Green Russian or Triangle but I'm finally sold on the Ram's Head. Excellent video, thanks for making and sharing.

This was an amazing shoot out thanks for taking the time to do this.
Mike Matthews has said himself, that every component change was always done to make the muffs sound alike with a new replacement component when old components were hard or expensive to come by. So they might be a little different, especially in the sweep of the controls, but they can be made to sound alike quite a lot.
@@soundmapper I wouldn't say that based on the result of listening to a RUclips video. For example, I had to sell Green Russian because of the excessive amount of low frequencies in this pedal. I’m quite amazed at how great these sounded. I know they’re being captured directly into the DAW program, but even still. It may have been the fact I was using Fender amps in the beginning and they’re already kind of mid scooped, but I’ve owned a few of these reissues and they didn’t sound anywhere near these variants. I’ve went and modded all of them to my liking at the time. Now I’m playing an old 1978 Peavey Deuce VT tube amp and I might have to break the Muff train out and see how they sound. Even the OpAmp Muff, it could totally reside in an awesome classic Muff big box that had a great and thick orange border that had the classic Muff letter font. I think they were onto something there with such large enclosures. Bigger pedals obviously equal a better and bigger tone. Also, absolutely fantastic video. I really dig it. Though I will say that if I went out and bought myself a Muff like one of these especially after watching this vid, I’d be a little underwhelmed and disappointed because this recording was phenomenal and really made the Muff variants sound great.
Best comparison video by far! I can see now that they can all sound different, but can also all sound very similar with the right settings. I think overall I like the Triangle the best. It seems to have the smoothest fuzz out of the four. Thanks! 👍🏻
Thank you for this style (also used by pedal bored everyone should sub to them as well!) and using a riff that showed both the low and high end at the same time so we could hear how much of the low end was still sustaining while the higher notes were being played and them how much definition the high notes had... actually really important for a rhythm player. 👏👏
I don't know what it is, but something about the triangle I just love that sound. It might get lost in a mix or whatever, but I don't care. I love that sound

Huge fan of the Russian. I’m usually playing fender guitars and fender amps and like a particularly sparkly bright clean tone. Having that extra darkness helps a lot, for my anyways!
I feel the same, I'm usually playing a fender jag thru a vox ac30 and, while I haven't personally tested out the Triangle or Ram's Head (and wasn't too thrilled with the Opamp sound) the Green Russian is a great counterbalance to the bright, chimey Vox/Jag tone. Plus, in terms of presence and saturation, it puts my once beloved standard full-sized NYC muff to shame. And the Green Russian running thru the rhythm circuit on the Jag...it's like a beast that will eat your children. And I mean that in the best way.
Yeah, if using a Fender or Vox, the Green Russian is a winner. The other 3 work well with a Marshall-y style amp. I have a couple of Laneys and a Bassbreaker15 , the Ram's Head kills through those. GR into my AC15 or Strauss SVT-15 (it's basically a Blues jnr with a 10" Eminence) is awesome.
My favorite guitar/Muff/amp combination atm is Epiphone SG (heavily modified, pups upgraded to Duncan P90 'Buckers) > Wren & Cuff Box of War V1 > Vox AC15 C1 stock w/Greenback. So good. I believe that the Box of War is based on a Sovtek "Civil War" Muff.
I love my OP-amp muff. It is the perfect balance of fuzz and distortion. I decided to get another muff since I love EHX. I tried the Green Russian and the Rams Head at my local guitar shop. After playing the Rams Head for two minutes I bought it. I use the op amp for rhythm and the Rams Head for lead. I'm love having two muffs on my pedal board.
@@ernestofelix6906 I only run one big muff at a time. For my lead tone I use a tubescreamer in front of the Rams head muff. After that I'll throw in a bit of reverb and delay.

Great comparison. My favourite was the Op Amp followed by the Russian, I think between the two of them a lot of ground could be covered, they all sound great though & great job on the tone match section.
I've tried these plus many, many more--Aguilar, Mooer, Walrus, SolidGold FX, Mojohand, Hartke (crap), MXR, Duality, Aftershock, Big Muff Pi, Pickle(s), etc, etc. The Aguilar puts out awesome fuzz sound but it is such a noisy pedal that it's unusable. Taken all around, the Green Russian is the best, most versatile, and effective bass fuzz I've found. I'm not particularly an EHX fan, but thanks for ending the search, EHX.
Excellent comparison review 👏! E X C E L L E N T 👏 👏 👏 ! ! ! (p.s., ...I'm gonna buy the rams head right now, partly on your rating🤔 - it matched mine👍!).
I'm trying to get into other styles of music again besides just modern metal genres, and have never owned or even used a fuzz pedal before. This helped narrow it down quite a bit for me. Especially after typing in "fuzz pedal" on Sweetwater and seeing like a billion different big muff variants haha. It's either the ram's head or op-amp for me. Most likely the ram's head for the versatility in sound. Thanks a ton for this video!
I have the Russian with JHS Moscow Mod and the Ram’s Head with Alchemy Audio Mid Mod and they both just kill and will cut through any mix. I’ll be getting the Op Amp and Triangle soon, probably unmodded
Just purchased a Ram's Head reissue and had the opportunity to buy the Triangle reissue as well so I came here to see if it would be worth having both. Also, would ultimately not mind having all four.
Great comparison, and thanks for the shoutout in the description 😀 Nice to see the Ram’s Head in the mix - maybe if they bring out a Civil War one I’ll redo mine with all six (or seven, if I include the Bass Muff again). The switcher is a great touch. For me it was a balance between appeasing people who go on about buffering/tone-suck from multiple pedals when I wasn’t able to really hear the difference, and the downside of having a big ol’ switcher using up valuable screen real estate. Subscribed!
Thx a lot for your comment, much appreciated. This channel wouldn't exist if it weren't for you. Agree on the switcher, now we're using it but is never on the screen. Not super easy cause we need to shot the video on two cameras and then remove one. Anyway, really can't wait for your next video. RUclips is missing you!
@@WeAsACompany I’m on hiatus during this pandemic. Kids doing online schooling and everyone working at home doesn’t make for an ideal demo-making environment when it’s just a hobby :)
I just ordered the Rams Head from Sweetwater Music the other evening. This video definitely helped influence my decision. Thank you for the shootout demo!
@@peetminer It sounds great, but it’s definitely noisy in my current signal chain. (There’s no noise if I use it as a stand alone.) It may be because of the combination of buffered and unbuffered pedals on my board. I’m slowly acquiring newer ehx pedals and I’ve built a board exclusively for them, so I’m hoping the noise issue with it ceases. Other than that, it’s sounds amazing.
excellent comparison, only wish you had included the white "nano" big muff in the line-up. btw, the way huge swollen pickle MkIIs is pretty awesome too and is very tweakable. i can get it to sound pretty much like any of the muffs and tones in-between.
I had the Op-amp recently and it was way too fizzy. In a mix all I could hear was sizzle. I think I would go with the Rus as the total opposite or thr Ram for in between those two.
Overall, I think you did a fantastic job with the whole production of this video. I had a hard time deciding, but since I use Fender amps, the Op-Amp Muff is probably the best suited for me. I was a little surprised by that. I did have a Russian Muff reissue for a while and it did not sound terrible, but I usually had to stack it with a Ibanez TS-9 to make it not sound so muddy.
@@WeAsACompany Yep I agree, it has a lot more mids. I have the Deluxe Big Muff, which has a whole section devoted to adding mids, but it has a ton of knobs and is kind of intimidating, plus it's bigger. Maybe the Op-Amp is what I want!
Great job man, congrats! Great comparison, would like to hear more of the opamp sound with eq disengaged. They are all great pedals with unique characteristics, the triangle and ram are damn near identical. I reaaaally like the extra meat of the opamp tough. I'll just grab the one that my local shop has on stock! Cheers
Hi man, thx a lot for your comment. Good advice on the op-amp, we may do another video at some point cause we just scratched the surface with these. Ram's and Triangle are very similar but slightly different too. The Ram has more output and a little bit more string definition at high gain. The Triangle has a little bit more gain at the very top and is just a touch more focused on mids.
@@WeAsACompany I'd be interest in hearing the EQD Life pedal compared to a Rat/octave/boost combo into your Beta Lead. Are they the same result? Can it be recreated? That sort of thing.
Great review! Helps a lot although still hard to decide. The tune is a bit nagging. Then it got stuck in my head. Now I used for my own Looper + A/B testing...
triangle sounds nice but more mid scooped to my ears. to me the best sounding is the Russian but the op amp would sound better in a busy mix. The ram's head is very nice maybe in between those those tonally.
@@michaelwoods9005 DSOTM was a germanium mod fuzz face while Animals and The Wall were exclusively the Rams Head. If you are going for a fuzz that has that singing violin like lead/solo tone I would go with the rams head over the other options or the op-amp then triangle before the Russian as that is arguably the most low-end heavy of all big muff pedals.
@@Zappappappappa for sure. I have a Rams Head in my chain. I use a Earthquaker dream crusher V2 before it, which is a germanium fuzz face, for leads it's Rams Head everytime.
Thanks for this demo! I was leaning Russian, but the direct comparison has me leaning toward the rams head. It seems like it has a wider frequency range than the more compressed Russian muff.
Gracias
Depends on the genre. Russian is More stoner . The ram head is more classic. The op amp is grunge and the triangle is an all rounder To me? As a fan of TONE BENDER AND FOXX TONE MACHINE I would choose the Triangle
I couldn't decide between a ram and a green russian, so I built a hybrid. A green russian with the gain closer to the rams head. Then a switch to add in a capacitor to go between the scooped mids to flat eq.
@@WeAsACompany I do not. I use lower output single coil pickups, so I wanted some extra oomph. For the tone switch, you can look up BYOC large beaver clone demos. They use a switch that goes between the normal scoop, flat, and mid boost. Here is a link to one demo ruclips.net/video/p6YB4RaR9Ls/видео.html
Never had a Muff pedal before. I thought my Triangle Pi was broken the first time I used it. I played it with my stock Tele and the amp just screamed and hissed and made way too much noise. With a Strat though with N3 pickups...no worries.
Which of the muff pedals would you recommend for someone looking for more note definition and clarity, but not losing any of the fuzz that makes these pedals cool? I have a nano big muff, and for some leads I do, it doesn’t do as good of a job as I’d like, however it does rhythm really well!
Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh! It's a little more $ than any of the EHX Muffs, but for tight, fat, punchy Muff-style Fuzz with no "mud" and excellent note-separation, totally works for me. I'm always swapping out pedals but it's currently occupying a permanent position on my "Stoner Doom" board. It can also be set up to sound a lot like a Fuzzface as well. Bonus!
But yeah, I agree with WAAC on the Ram's Head. Out of the all the stock, non-deluxe EHX Muffs it (closely followed by the Triangle, depending on the amp/rig, etc) does have the midrange and clarity for the lead tone many of us are looking for.
I've tried all of these. I usually gravitate more towards the op and the green. Between the two, green would have to be it. It has more bottom end to it, without being too much bass.
I agree, the reason why I don't have the Green but the Ram's Head on my board is that I use octave before the fuzz. The Green with octave before is too boomy. The Ram's Head is the most versatile in my opinion.
I have the green Russian big muff, and can't get a good sound out of it. Maybe it's because I play through an orange which already has a sludgy bassy sound. I should probably try a brighter fuzz. I'm thinking either triangle or rams head. Op amp sounds too tinny for me.
@@WeAsACompany Rocker 32 combo. It's a great pedal platform. But for whatever reason, the green Russian just isn't working well with it. Clean channel sounds too thin, dirty channel sounds a bit better with the gain rolled off, but gives too much uncontrollable feedback.
Thanks for this: I am contemplating between the Green Russian and the Ram's Head and have my worries the Green Russian will sound too muddy. Think I'm in team Ram's Head now
Thanks for the video and great job on it. Has anyone used the deluxe big muff? Supposed to be able to get any of these tones out of it. Wondering if that’s the one to get or one of these.

This is a great comparison. Thank you for doing this
Thx for watching man!
Best Pedal comparisson ever, thx a lot!
THIS is how you compare pedals. Excellent job!
Thx a lot!
Thx a lot for your comment.
@@WeAsACompany Anytime! I'm definitely gonna stick around. Wish more pedal demos/comparisons were as good, hell, even half as good as this.
Thanks so much for the comparison! Brilliant video!
I have the Russian with JHS Moscow Mod and the Ram’s Head with Alchemy Audio Mid Mod and they both just kill and will cut through any mix. I’ll be getting the Op Amp and Triangle soon, probably unmodded
Great demo! Thx
The demo shows how to cut through. You spin the tone knob until you can hear yourself.
;)
I was down to the Green Russian or the Op Amp but that Ram's Head...awesome vid!
Thx
Just purchased a Ram's Head reissue and had the opportunity to buy the Triangle reissue as well so I came here to see if it would be worth having both. Also, would ultimately not mind having all four.
They’re all great.
Nothing better than a Big Muff. Any of them
Great comparison, and thanks for the shoutout in the description 😀 Nice to see the Ram’s Head in the mix - maybe if they bring out a Civil War one I’ll redo mine with all six (or seven, if I include the Bass Muff again).
@@ThePedalBored One reason more to get rid of this pandemic. Really hope we can all see the end of it asap.
Actually the Green Russian is a civil war. They built that version based on the green Russian tall font specs which are the same of a civil war
@@password_xy Thx for the info!
I just ordered the Rams Head from Sweetwater Music the other evening. This video definitely helped influence my decision. Thank you for the shootout demo!
Thx for your comment, we're supper happy if we can help. Have fun with the Ram's Head, great pedal!
What do you think?
@@peetminer It sounds great, but it’s definitely noisy in my current signal chain. (There’s no noise if I use it as a stand alone.) It may be because of the combination of buffered and unbuffered pedals on my board. I’m slowly acquiring newer ehx pedals and I’ve built a board exclusively for them, so I’m hoping the noise issue with it ceases.
Other than that, it’s sounds amazing.
@@MrFuzzleupagus What comes before the muff in your signal chain?
@@peetminer Boss Tuner, Fullertone Deluxe Clyde, TS9, EHX Ripped Speaker, Blammo Electronics Tomb Sender, and EHX NYC Big Muff (which is also noisy.)
I own the triangle and it really has tons of low end, impressive.
excellent comparison, only wish you had included the white "nano" big muff in the line-up. btw, the way huge swollen pickle MkIIs is pretty awesome too and is very tweakable. i can get it to sound pretty much like any of the muffs and tones in-between.
Thx for your comment. Yes, we should have included the nano too, maybe for a future video, thx for the advice.
I had the Op-amp recently and it was way too fizzy. In a mix all I could hear was sizzle. I think I would go with the Rus as the total opposite or thr Ram for in between those two.
Just amazing job!
Thx a lot! It makes sense, the Russian can be very dark with some rigs. The Op-amp has way more mids, don't you think?
@@WeAsACompany I certainly do.
@@WeAsACompany Yep I agree, it has a lot more mids. I have the Deluxe Big Muff, which has a whole section devoted to adding mids, but it has a ton of knobs and is kind of intimidating, plus it's bigger. Maybe the Op-Amp is what I want!
Love these Muff comparisons! Great job!
Thx a lot man!
Nice channel! Loving your selection of pedals for your videos. Lots of shootouts I want to hear.
Thx a lot man, much appreciated. Any specific shootout you would like to see on the channel?
@@WeAsACompany I'd be interest in hearing the EQD Life pedal compared to a Rat/octave/boost combo into your Beta Lead. Are they the same result? Can it be recreated? That sort of thing.
@@Always_in_C_standard Very interesting, I'll work on it. Thx a lot for your feedback.
Great review! Helps a lot although still hard to decide. The tune is a bit nagging. Then it got stuck in my head. Now I used for my own Looper + A/B testing...
well done!
THX!
I have the Ram’s Head and love it, but I’m thinking of getting the Op Amp and consider my GAS for Big Muff over.
I love them all
triangle sounds nice but more mid scooped to my ears. to me the best sounding is the Russian but the op amp would sound better in a busy mix. The ram's head is very nice maybe in between those those tonally.
Agree on the Opamp, it would cut the mix better than the others.
I have the big muff wicker tone and the metal muff dllouvle with top boost... but my fav is the opamp pumpkins muff for me a superb pedal.
Excellent comparison! I honestly could not narrow it down, so I got all of them. They definitely each have their own personalities!
We completely agree, each one has his own thing.
Green russian & op amp 👌
I'm torn between RAM's HEAD and OP AMP. those are the best sounding imho.
For that heavy Gilmour sound (1987-1994), the Green Russian it is.
Except for DSOT, that was a rams head.
@@michaelwoods9005 dark side was a germanium fuzz face he used Rams Head during Animals.
The russian with my single P-90 melodymaker is all I ever play at home now. It's weird It's just become my noise this year nothing else seems fun
Very very good!!!
Thx!
3:31 Ram's head full gain
Gracias
Op-amp*
Op-amp has more mids.
No matter which one you get, you’ll probably be hungry for the others, too. It’s a GAS, GAS, GAS!!!
Depends on the genre. Russian is More stoner . The ram head is more classic. The op amp is grunge and the triangle is an all rounder
To me? As a fan of TONE BENDER AND FOXX TONE MACHINE I would choose the Triangle
excellent run through
Cheers man!
I couldn't decide between a ram and a green russian, so I built a hybrid. A green russian with the gain closer to the rams head. Then a switch to add in a capacitor to go between the scooped mids to flat eq.
Sounds very cool. Do you have any sound samples online?
@@WeAsACompany I do not. I use lower output single coil pickups, so I wanted some extra oomph. For the tone switch, you can look up BYOC large beaver clone demos. They use a switch that goes between the normal scoop, flat, and mid boost. Here is a link to one demo ruclips.net/video/p6YB4RaR9Ls/видео.html
@@ChrisRash Thx!
I have the opamp and its great and i have a vickaudio 73 rams head but after watching this i ordered an ehx rams head!
now this is how you compare pedals
Thx a lot man, much appreciated.
I would say Ram's Head, it's the best for note definitions IMHO. Triangle is also really good for that.
If you like the op amp muff, you've got to check out the Warlow from JPTR FX... Best BM I've played yet, you won't be disappointed
Best review !!!!
Ram’s head closely followed by the triangle.
Having a hard time choosing between the Ram's Head and the Op amp
Every demo I’ve listened to I liked the Russian best. The triangle is close though.
..... if I hear that riff one more time!! Ram's Head it is....
The Ram's Head is the most versatile in my opinion.
try the tone wicker...very very versitile
Hi, for the Hendrix sound which one would you choose between these four?
Which Muff would you say is best for single note-riffs, lots of midrange and not a lot of extreme highs/fizz? Thanks!
Hard to say. Not sure about the genre, but I would say the Opamp.
@@WeAsACompany Thanks for the reply! And I play alternative rock/grunge. I played with the Op Amp at my local guitar store today and it was dope 👌
@@philipkbrayne Great! Your guitar is going to rage. Make some great music for this planet with your new muff. Best of luck!
Hey, could you check (and compare?) the EHX Double Muff? Thanks ! Just discovered this channel, great contents!
Thx!
I have the green Russian big muff, and can't get a good sound out of it. Maybe it's because I play through an orange which already has a sludgy bassy sound. I should probably try a brighter fuzz. I'm thinking either triangle or rams head. Op amp sounds too tinny for me.
The Green Russian should sound just good with the Orange. Which model of amp do you have? Are you running it into dirt or clean channel?
@@WeAsACompany Rocker 32 combo. It's a great pedal platform. But for whatever reason, the green Russian just isn't working well with it. Clean channel sounds too thin, dirty channel sounds a bit better with the gain rolled off, but gives too much uncontrollable feedback.
@@ricksimone1363 Got it. I think that the best platform for fuzzes is an amp with huge clean headroom.
Thanks for this: I am contemplating between the Green Russian and the Ram's Head and have my worries the Green Russian will sound too muddy. Think I'm in team Ram's Head now
@@StefanvanderKlooster You can't go wrong with the Ram's.
Thanks for the video and great job on it.
Has anyone used the deluxe big muff? Supposed to be able to get any of these tones out of it. Wondering if that’s the one to get or one of these.
Which one is better for a clean fender baseman type amp and a telecaster?
Thanks
