One of my most favorite memories was being asked by J to introduce him to Elliott Smith in Luna Lounge on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in NYC... What an awesome request and I am so filled with joy knowing that in that moment that I was the one who brought them together. I miss Elliott but am so glad to see and hear J after all these years...
I have always felt like the prices from E-Hx were very considerate to the consumer. It's a strange phenomenon that could just be effective marketing, but I am fooled. 😸
I remember reading an interview with J in the 90s in one of the guitar magazines. He said he stopped at every music store while on tour and would buy every big muff he found.
I think more than anything in the world I want to see footage of J when he's playing guitar for GG. His muff probably didnt get stolen, he probably just abandoned it because it had poop all over it
the guy has a whole room full of muff's, ehx builds his own model, and he is still comforted by the fact that its much easier to get another vintage one on the internet these days. that is real love.
I’ve been posting this on various pedal videos too. Haha. Really wish they’d just do a special limited edition run of the triangles in the original format. Would be an instant purchase for me.
Very cool, congrats! I've been through many distortion pedals, but the big ol' muff has earned it's spot as the only OD on my board. You just can't stay away from that thick, silver fuzz!
I have one of the 90's Big muff, the Giant metal box one (exactly the same as jack white). This is enormous on my pedal board but i love it, it's built like a russian tank. I've tried several new ones which are a lot smaller but i never found one with the same sound. I'm waiting to try this one out !
@Neon Thunderbird it does seem to suggest that it’s just the same as the regular one but with a new paint job. I’m a huge fan of J but wouldn’t actually prefer the regular silver paint job. Been wanting to pick one up for a while so may have to go ahead.
Question for Reverb / EHX - is there any difference in the circuit between this and the recent Rams Head RI, or is it just cosmetic? Either way, great looking / sounding pedal.
out of all my guitars and amps the one thing I worry about getting stolen is my pedal board, so when he started hoarding them I feel that. I can replace everything except some of the pedals
My first pedal was a green Sovtek Big Muff, totally because of J. Also got a DOD FX33 Buzz Box at the same time, because Melvins. Miss both, though I do still have the Muff knobs at least! 😆
@@kyarsm Maybe you have my old one? 😆 Maybe? Let me confirm that they're where I think they are. I have no idea what fair value for "vintage" Sovtek knobs would be. 😆
I have a 1981 V6 big muff that has the exact component values as J’s favorite. I’ve traced it and compared it to the trace of his. Same. It’s my favorite as well, best sounding big muff I’ve ever had.
Man, I just love the way J's Muff sounds. I could never quite dial in that sound. Maybe now I can! (and that's my internal dialog to justify the purchase of yet another big muff! Because I know I will. :)
Oh my it sounds like..... Another Big Muff! Don't get me wrong I love a classic big muff, it was my first "fuzz" but damn if there ain't an assload of unnecessary reissues and now signature models.
I tried his muff in store and thought it sounded a little more tame and soft compared to other muffs. I still dont know the guy but I love these videos with gear collections.
Can you tell me the sound difference between your Signature J Mascis Rams Head pedal (w/purple logo) and the Rams Head Pi pedal (w/black logo). I notice that both pedals have the same 3 knobs. Btw, great video and amazing collection...thank you.
I could have sworn this video came out quite a while ago, but without the new pedal in it. I wonder why they didn’t have new video with him playing the new version?
Jay's my great influence, he's my guitar hero. Interestingly i didn't know he uses the muff with fuzz and volume maxed out so his signature pedal should be borned with only one knob, the tone one. Thanks, i love teratology and i now fancies building a muff in a wha shell and treadledum my dinosauroucus licks away from those lame EHX lego pedals.
Man i love big muffs but i don’t own one right now i went in for a fuzz factory clone and met line 6 amp has a big muff setting and with some tweaking it’s pretty decent
Seems like J has really been growing more comfortable on camera lately. What a sweet guy. Sick playing too
Pretty sure I’ve seen this scam on other music accounts too. Just in case anyone was unaware.
@@Russell1982 Yep. I always report these scumbag posts.

Really cool to see J Mascis so lively :)
Freak of nature…. as J gets older he communicates faster and more coherently😏
Love this.
like benjamin button... except he was born as ozzy :')
Glad to see J so enthusiastic about this.
For sure, this is about as demonstrative as J gets. The enthusiasm from him here is epic.
Ha! Yeah J doesn't go overboard much.
🤣
Dude looks so dead I couldn’t tell if u were being sarcastic lol
J Mascis is no ordinary man. While others boost for leads he decreases for rhythm.
most boost for virtue signaling :-)
Sometimes that works the best. Like the sweet spot on the volume knob in a pedal
If you watch some of his more in-depth pedal/effects videos he explains why which is basically just that he understands how gain staging works.
Gives Lou more room to shine

A lot better than the prices for Tonebenders!!
While others have fallen by the wayside, J’s music has been a part of my life since the late ‘80s. Yes, I’m old. ;-)

J Mascis is a legend. I ordered one. I already have an amazing Ram's head fuzz, but I wanted to try this one. Rock on, J.
Please let us know if they sound the same, have seen EHX themselves saying it's jus a Ram's Head RI with a different paint job
I saw Dinosaur before the jr application in a small club in the eighties, awesome! Love Deep Wound as well.
Volume all the way up? I never thought about that when hearing J Mascis 😂
I thought I owned a lot of Big Muff pedals. I was wrong. I bow to the king.

Searching for pedals before the internet was a major hassle. I can totally relate to J on that.
eBay was the game changer around 1997-98 when enough people knew of it.
I love when he uses his rare Jerms Tonebender with the Big Muff.
I used to be a connoisseur of big muff, small muff, any muff really in a pinch.
James Halliday has a pedal?!? This is an awesome edition to the Big Muff collection.
J is THE muff player in my opinion, so this is a very nice signature pedal to see
He has already wrote all the songs I want to write.
