I told him “it’s so good and human now. You’ll appreciate it.”
Then early in the next drive we approached an intersection on a street with one lane for travel with cars on both sides. As soon as we saw the car oncoming our car pulled over and slowed way down. But it kept creeping a bit so we stayed in motion.
He looked over to see if I had done it because he couldn’t believe the car just did that.

Actually it makes sense they didn't offer a free trial before. It was better to limit it to hardcore early adopters who are more knowledgeable, more actively engaged, and more forgiving. Early adopters enjoy their role as "test drivers", while "normal" tesla owners are much more inclined to ignore/forget their responsibility to pay attention to the road, resulting in more accidents. Normal owners would also have been more likely to get frustrated with quirks and bugs, and contributed to a more negative public perception of FSD.

Just had my first drive of FSD 12.3.1. What a huge improvement from FSD 11, which last Sunday tried to kill me at a simple left turn at a traffic light. Version 11 had a 95% failure rate at that light. Today, not only did V 12.3.1 execute the left turn perfectly. Indicated lane change well in advance, didn't cut the corner or overshoot the corner both of which result in massive steering wheel jerk. It's not perfect, it dawdles and drives too far to the right in its lane. But V12.3.1 is a significant improvement.

  • @mrdude2x

V12.3 is mostly interventions for me, strolls below limit. Hardly any disengagements now but there still are some. For example I need to turn left but it wiggles between turn lane and straight through lane(🤷). Overall though it is at the point I'd rather use it than not. This is the starting point where mass attention should be drawn to it. It was not 11.4.9 which was too finicky. I hardly ever used FSD off freeways on 11.4.9 because I was constantly disengaging.
Rant below, probably pointless to read haha.
Matter of fact V12 needs to get to freeways ASAP. On drives that go on freeways have the highest number of disengagements. I honestly believe it isn't actually 11.4.9 but maybe like a shadow update to 11.4.10 or something. It's a bit better but man is it frustrating how it never wants to auto lane change. I the driver hit the blinker on an open freeway and it just blinks, highlighting lane but does nothing for a mile than just turns off blinker. WHAT?! So now I just treat freeways as basic autopilot. Blinker, wait a few seconds, then I press pedal (F*** 1 pull FSD) and turn the wheel disengaging, once change complete return to FSD. I get a lot more testing is needed for safety at 55+mph but man do I hope FSD V12 shows it's capable of taking freeways soon.

The latest update is definitely a big improvement. For me, I'm not comparing FSD to the previous iterations, but to perfection. Because that is what it has to be. It made a few mistakes like going over a curb... Kind of like small forgivable errors that a new driver might make. But, it couldn't find its way out of a parking lot on my last drive. It then pulled into a parking spot and gave up. I will go back to that parking lot and retest a few times. If it learns to navigate it over the next few weeks or month, then I will definitely say this is the breakthrough we've been waiting for. If not, I'll remain skeptical. One thing that is good but potentially troubling is that the speed that it acts and reacts is pretty fast. Great because that is what is necessary in a true FSD. Potentially worrisome because even if you are paying close attention with your hands on the wheel, foot ready to step on the brake or accelerator, if it makes a mistake it could crash before you can intervene.

I love this idea but I think there may be a problem. It takes approximately 50-100 miles of driving to calibrate the cameras for FSD to become operational. They would need some dedicated vehicles to demonstrate FSD before handing over new vehicles to customers. Not sure how realistic this is.

I like the idea of a free trial cause that's a low cost investment.
Very skeptical of mandatory FSD trials before delivery though. Tesla bears will probably say this is a cover story for bad delivery numbers later. If 1 million FSD demos are given before delivery and the take rate is still 1%, each demo takes 20 minutes, and the sales staff's pay is $24/hr, that costs $8M which means it'll take 4 months for that investment to pay itself off if the customer subscribes to FSD.
Also curious how much of a bottleneck that will be on the delivery pipeline. Tesla currently employs strategies like parking the car in a car park and letting the owner pick it up so the delivery process is very horizontally scaled. Enforcing FSD demos reduces the concurrency of deliveries to the number of sales staff & timeliness of customers picking it up. No hard numbers but that sounds like a MASSIVE bottleneck.
