Batman the Musical Song - I'll Decorate This City, In Ribbons Of Blood

- Batman The Musical was to be produced by Warner Bros Theater Ventures, and be an adaption of the first two movies with the same cast [excluding the Penguin]. I'm very disappointed, the songs were absolutely brilliant. Hopefully if the Spiderman Musical does well, DC will bring back the project to compete with it.
About the song: The scenario to this song is that Joker has just retreated back to his hideout after being defeated at a bank robbery by Batman on Christmas Eve. There is a monologue before this scene that follows:
"Joker:
God Damn the Batman! And god damn, all his god damn wonderful toys! Where does he get 'em boys? Where does he get 'em?
An just what have I gotta do, for one sweet little victory, eh? Just one sweet, miserable little victory, for good ol', little ol', Joker.
God damn the Batman! How he tortures me in so many ways, so many hours, and so many days...
Well fuck him, and fuck this city! Look at it! A cesspit of the filthiest filth, and the darkest of darks, the blackest of blacks and the greyest of greys...oh god, a city of black & grey. I'm so sick of black & grey! Who would have thought it was Christmas?
Ah yes, Christmas, I almost forgot. It's Christmas boys, I almost forgot. But I'm so sick of black & grey. I need to colourize this city...it's Christmas after all...what can I do, what CAN I do?
Yes! I have it boys, I bloody well have it...oooooh does anybody ever dream like this anymore? Gather round boys, I have it...now listen...LISTEN!"

New rule: if a song has the tune of Jingle Bells in it and is sung by the joker, you are not allowed not to include batmobiles losing wheels and jokers getting away.
I think that would have been too campy. This version was much more disturbing, especially since we were all expecting the classic version from the 90s.
"Hopefully if the Spiderman Musical does well" *Insert hysterical laughter here*
Seriously though, hindsight's a bitch.
Who else is here after hearing that the upcoming Joker: Folie a Deux might be a musical?
If it is, I hope they reach out to David J. Smith and pay him a LOT of money for this...
Yeah frankly Joker is a character that could work really well with songs. He is a theatrical character after all
Thanks very much from the composer!
Credit should go to Jim Steinman for the title, but music and lyrics all mine.
Phew ! For a moment I was confused how I missed this.
Sounds great.
RIP
I can't believe I went apl these years without knowing. It was never clear to me who composed these songs, but they've been an INTEGRAL part of me ever since I heard them! Where can I find more information on this? I want to give credit where it's due when I tell people about these!
Can we talk about those sustained high notes? Wowza.
I'm a huge Steinman fan, but I have to say, This David J. Smith guy might be the man for the job to write the music for this musical. Great song!
Oh, hey, I just found my new favorite Christmas song.
This was the first track of my kid's music playlist lmao youtube what even
Arkham Origins adds such a new dimension to this song, wouldn'tcha say?
now that i think about it.....it does! XD
Definitely:'D
God, I love Christmas time.
me too 😊
Joker on broadway? GENIUS!
It's Christmas again^^ Time to listen to my favourite Christmas song xD
Well, I wanted to listen to this 'since it's christmas again and randomly found this comment from last year xDD
this is absoultly fantastic a masterpeice, really captures the essence of the Joker...i can imagine him dancing with Harley while singing
I can´t stop to sing it.!
You almost had me. This is one of the best Steinmenesque songs since Blind as a Bat
I fully agree. When I heard "Blind as a Bat", I simply assumed that it was one of Steinman's.
Thanks a lot. I was really proud of 'I'll butcher everything that moves and feast on every yell, just watch the gore-fest I create a nightmare worse than hell'
Hello, David...
A shot in the dark here since its been a couple of years since your post...
I've been trying to get in contact with you regarding a MuseScore project involving this song and this is my last try through YT.
If you see this, please make yourself heard. :)
Best regards.
Bro are you still around? This song is INCREDIBLE, you should be so proud of hitting every note so perfectly. I love this track!
I'm still around and thanks (everyone) for comments. This was written with a Batman musical in mind and PERFECT for the Joker. It's camp, heartless and cruel, all at the same time. I can see/hear Neil Patrick Harris doing this justice. It should be noted that the title comes from the genius mind of Jim Steinman (he apparently wrote a Christmas slasher song in the early 80's, but remains unheard).
@@dsmith7000Love how it's jaunty and menacing at the same time.
My favourite Christmas song.
Love how this comment was written just 19 minutes ago. Makes me glad that people still come to listen to these songs for a non-existing musical and the fanmade ones by Scaramouche.
+olseknam I just appreciate good music is all.
This is suprisingly Steinmanish for not being an Steinman produced song. Fits very well with Batman as well. I bet Steinman has heard this song a few times :)
I bet this is the Joker's favorite Christmas song right next to "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells."
my new favorite Christmas song.
I love the silence at the end. Joker and his goons have walked away and now it’s just the natural sound of wind blowing on a cold winter night in Gotham
Feeling is still the same
I was so hyped when I heard about this way back when it was originally announced. I really hope it comes out at some point. Hope it's not complicated with Jim Steinman's passing.
RIP Steinman.
"In the Land of the Pig, The Butcher is King" got repurposed for Bat Out of Hell 3, and now it's in the stage version of Bat Out of Hell. I think it's safe to say this musical is dead.
Absolutely beautiful arrangement legitimately thought it was a Jim Steinman song but doesn't matter just goes to show how talented this performance is
Thanks very much! The writing of the song was heavily influenced by the great Jim Steinman, so your Meat Loaf comment is spot on.
Whoo troper city this one song alone justifies reading all of the lyrical dissonance page oh and merry Christmas everyone may all your Christmases be red ^^
Every year I listen to this 🥰
I came across this song looking for something to laugh at......man this was it! XD I LOVE THIS SONG!!!! so playing it during the holiday season!
The title is Jim Steinman's, which he mentioned in an old '80's interview (although the song has never been heard/released). I thought the title would work great for the Joker and I therefore wrote lyrics/music BEFORE Jim blogged about the Devil's Playground.
Cheers!
David, big fan of this song. We included this video in our podcast episode about the musical as well as on our playlist so our listeners can hear the full song. Here's our podcast ep: ruclips.net/video/5aeLVSOAAdE/видео.html
Oh my goodness, this is too rich XD
Props to TVTropes for the link.
If DC DOES bring this project back, you should definitely do the music for it. This is seriously making me actually laugh out loud.
"Hopefully if the Spider-Man musical does well"... oh the irony. Especially considering that that fiasco was likely the main reason this project remains dead.
gives me such a thrill
A holiday favorite since 2009!
Why is this not on Spotify?
This would have been a very good idea in a movie. The scene to this song would have to be halarious.
*waves at the other tropers.* Shall we have a Christmas party on this video? XD I love this song! ^^
"'Cos killing is my business, and business is good
I'll hunt 'em all down, in ev'ry damn neighbourhood
So Merry Christmas Gotham City, hope you like what I do!
Merry Christmas Gotham, it's my one gift to you!
Merry Christmas, Gotham City, hope you drown in my flood!
As I decorate this city, in ribbons, ribbons of blood!
"
This is fucking brilliant!
Hi, thanks for posting the song. I wrote this and (for various reasons) would appreciate if you could add (in the info section) the credit:
'words & music by David J Smith copyright 2007'.
BTW - The song title is 'I'll Decorate This City, In Ribbons Of Blood' and was inspired by the Jim Steinman Batman demos.
intresting, just read that in 2007 while writing this or after this got cancelled from batman the plan was for Hook (Falco) to sing this in BOOH, wonder if it was instead of Land of the Pigs
sorry not this ofcourse since this is just based on Jim's title (did not read the comments yet) but the demo he wrote and

LANDMARK BLOG
Hi! I swore Id never do this but here it is!! I wrote these lyrics off the top of my head, stream of consciousness style. SO its not even first draft! But I thought it’d be interesting to get your responses. JUST THE LYRICS! Dont even imagine the music, unless you want to. But its not written yet, except I used my previously published PARADISE LOST chorus s it "seemed just right" at that moment. That does have a melody, a gr8 one, but that could all change as I develop this. This is a song for Hook in BOOH, "THE DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND". Read it & if u want, please write SPECIFIC detailed observations....each & every line if u wish......I hope you like it. Jim Steinman
I will decorate this city
With Ribbons Of Blood
I will find the endless tears
Soon to be a flood
I will conjure up the magic
Far beyond your sight
I’ll illuminate this city
With the ascension of the light
Eternal terrors hold us down
Keep us plodding in the mud
I WILL DECORATE THIS CITY
IN RIBBONS OF BLOOD.
Broken hearts
Are the Devil’s Playground
Shattered dreams
Disillusioned youth
And all of man
Is the Devil’s Playground
Shameless lies
And Shameful truth
We’ll all succumb!
And some time when
The Dark exults and moons arise
In the blink of an eye
The Devil’s Playground
Is Born Again!
The Devil’s Playground
Is Alive Again!
So Come On Down
To the Devil’s Playground!
Come On Down
Before It Disappears
In the blink of an eye
You see the Devil’s playground
Now it all seems dead
But it used to be here …Once!
(Once it was here)
Once!
Before it disappeared!
Once!
‘Once’ always disappears
Trembling hands
Are the Devil’s Playground
Empty plans
And hollow hopes
ETERNAL TERRORS HOLD US DOWN
AND WE’LL ALL BE DROWNING IN THE MUD!
I will decorate this city
With ribbons of blood …
In the blink of an eye
All is lost
The storms they rumble
And the winds are tossed
In the blink of an eye
You’re a sad old man
Trying to remember
Whatever you can
In the blink of an eye
Death will clutch you
No respect
For fortune or Fame
In the blink of an eye
It all awaits you
Thousand of tombstones
Waiting for the names
Just waiting for the names
In the blink of an eye …
In the blink of an eye …
In the blink of an -
I
I
I
I WILL DECORATE THIS CITY
WITH RIBBONS OF BLOOD!
(soft)
No matter
How tragic the loss
No matter
How heavy the cost
To this very day
I can stand tall and say:
I fought for Paradise
But Paradise lost
I fought for Paradise
And Paradise lost.
It wasn’t your fault or mine
Wasn’t this it wasn’t that
But Paradise lost
In the final at bat
Paradise lost
In the last at bat.
(DARK.)
did joker say the f word
+Jeremiah “Creeperboy101” Countryman yes.
your really good at making good lyrics and the music is wonderful and the title is awesome XD i really enjoy this song ! im going to listen to it each Christmas from now~ XD i love joy full songs about murder lol hahah and also joker is just so my fav right now and probably for as long as i live he has become such a big part of my fan life XD
Two words....Meat, Loaf.
two out of three ain't bad
Wouldnt it be amazing if they would the let the Joker sing that in the upcoming Arkham Origins? I mean, it play at Christmas Eve and all...
I wish I sang it, but I didn't. D:
I found it on the Batman: The Musical tribute site.
MarioMan19 I really love the Batman musical songs however I feel that they should be used in musical theatre in future because if Batman the musical ever does get back on it's feet I hope and pray that Warner Bros Discovery can learn something from that of the Warner Bros Theatre Ventures division and this could be the future where Batman will get the musical theatre treatment that Broadway and the West End Deserves the most as the songs should be used for a musical theatre project for many years to come
Glad I stumbled across this.
You find so many good songs just reading the Lyrical Dissonance page on TVTropes.
Thanks very much from the composer!
Great work you did here *hugs* love the song!
I've been trying to find an instrumental for this song for ages with no luck >.
I love this so much.
Kinda odd to have the phrase killing is my business and business is good here. Apt as it is, it reminds me of the Megadeth song
Ah, okay. I gotcha. In that case, thanks for posting it!
Oh, bahahaha.
I just saw that edit you made to the TV Tropes article. :P
well the spiderman musical is supposed to come out on the very day i write this comment so lets hope the batman musical soon comes to fruition
If this is typical of the songs I really hope they do revive the idea.
We actually like this more than the song that Steinman demoed for the musical.
On our podcast, we covered how this musical could've been made and featured an excerpt of this fanmade song, as well as included this video on our playlist so our listeners can hear the full song on your channel. Here's our podcast ep: ruclips.net/video/5aeLVSOAAdE/видео.html
This is *not* from Jim Steinman's proposed Batman Musical - but it's still a great song, very well put together both musically and lyrically... and yes, the Steinman influence is very clear. Great job dsmith7000. Can you point us to any more?
I've just found Dark Entwined With Darkness - absolutely amazing. David J Smith - please tell me you've done more.
He also did his own version of "the graveyard shift"
This is on my playlist. I listen to it on repeat sometimes. ❤🖤
Such a good song!
Jólin koma brátt og þá er tími til að skreyta :)
That was a friendly response to give to the person whose work you posted.
this song is awesome
It sure got a certain Jim Steinman feel to it ;)

Une des meilleurs musique inspiré de DC comic, I advice you to listen The Joker's song by Miracle of Sound, it's great too ^^
this is amazing.
Just got finished watching The Joker movie. Surprisingly, this song just doesn't fit Joaquin Phoenix Joker. This is more of Mark Hamill Style. I think dark entwined with Darkness fits the latest Joker better
My friend is doing this song for our choral Winter Concert xD I really hoped she got it xD probably not though because of content x3
Anyone have any idea where I can get the instrumental of this song? Or the accompaniment? I'd love to do this for speech contest!
I like the Song. i kinda sounds like something Meat Loaf would sing - a bit similar to "i'd do anything for love" apart from it doesn't have a loud intro like it. or "it all coming back to me" ML's Version.
@MarioMan19 Thanks a lot.
no problem :P yeah its a awesome line XD
just awesome :D
Fucking beautifull
Do you know who the singer is?
so f*ckin awsome
Ha Ha. Bono & The Edge have written some great stuff (She's A Mystery To Me for one) but Spiderman isn't their best work.
Where can I get this song?! It has that Jim Steinman feel to the music!
@werewolfboy97 Just probably ^^
replay button abuse XD
This song is actually a fan one inspired by the musical. It wasn't going to actually be in it.
Hi other tropers!
@dsmith7000 Yeah, sure.
Where'd he get the monologue? There's no script available.
+Jodgee Not entirely true; You can find all the stuff for it here,
www.freewebs.com/batman_themusical/tributes.htm
Hello. :P
who's singing on this?
Well, as you asked.......I am!
This is a production I did for Dave Smith some years ago in my studio back in the UK. I programmed, mixed and mastered it....and pretended to be a choir of henchman too! I also did Dave's "Dark Entwined With Darkness" and "The Graveyard Shift", along with a few non-Batman things.....It kinda weird finding this on RUclips and realising over 46,000 have heard a song you sang.... this was fun. Dave is a talented writer. It's cool to see that people have liked it. :-)
+VocalTech Studios amazing Job! thank you a lot
VocalTech Studios I found this some years ago and I adore it, thanks for making one of my favourite songs!
batman the musical... is that a fucking joke? I sure hope so.
Meh... this is easily the weakest of the songs. No offense to the artists but for me neither the lyrics nor the song itself really remind me of the joker... If you're gunna give the Joker a song it would have to contrast Batman's. It's just not scary or dark enough IMHO Something reminiscent of the Oogie Boogie song from NBC would be more fitting :)
@MarioMan19 Thanks a lot.
