The fact that you put each gretchin inside it's own grid square on your work mat speaks to me on a spiritual level.
Y'know, I don't think I realised I was doing it until one side was done, and I was like "ooh, you're a bit weird, aren't you?" hah
@@MidwinterMinis do you also keep all your bits in little labelled zip lock bags?
I do the exact same with Guardsmen. I just can’t help it.
@@MidwinterMinis To be honest, to do this kind of hobby most of us have to be a little bit odd and/or have at least a small amount of the OCD.
Hey man, is that Halfords paint specifically? Cheers
😡 Drill your Barr...
Oh... You have...
What can we complain about now?
Honestly, great video, always enjoy your content and wonderful to see such classic models out again.
Puppy!
I have some other projects higher up in the stack, but I'm planning on revisiting what I've already painter for Battle Masters and adjust them to get them more in sync with the painted examples on the back of the box. I think this series will help me in figuring out which figs I can maybe spend a little less time on and how. Looking forward to seeing more of this!
I have the full set of these in my basement, unpainted. So tempted to field them
4:03.
Guy: £7 a can
Me: (laughing maniacally) colleague discount
I apologize if my question comes off a little blunt or as condescending. Is there a reason why someone would paint many models in the exact same fashion? My instinct would be to paint every model a different color. Is there a reason why this is rarely done?
Great job painting those Orks by the way!
It was just the style at the time, born from historical wargamming where everyone wears a uniform. Nowadays youd maybe vary the belts or hats but you still keep an army uniform scheme
Mate, strip the already painted grots like a real man. Don't replace them; it hurts their feelings.
Oh, I will! :D
Not a fan of stripping minis myself, but that may have something to do with the fact that I can’t do it...
Has anyone had ussues with stripping black primer from citadel?
@@TheGuszilla $13 ultrasonic cleaner and 99c store AwesomO cleaner strips minis pretty quick.
@@TheGuszilla I use 99% isopropanol . It's not the fastest but it's easy on the plastic and cheap.
This is awesome!
Thanks matey! I'm glad Canadian me got a kick out of it ;)
Agreed

Where can I get coat d’ arms?
@@theinquisitionsparrot6749 here you go www.blackhat.co.uk/product-category/coat-darms-paints/
Yeah this is definitely cool I just wish people weren't charging $500 for old miniatures. I can't find any old space Marines or terrain at all and I bet that's because keeping it was so important back then
Now that battlereports will be kind of difficult to do, could you perhaps do a Video on Tablesetup and Terrain? Espacially for those smaller ~500 p games...
Yeah, that might be a nice idea for a quick video! Especially useful now :)
Or how Midwinter Minis would make numbered objective markers for games.
Yeah, I would 100% be down for that
Great idea!
Yea
I miss the days where I didn't care about shades and highlights, sniffing boltgun metal like it was not legal and every single model was based with goblin green. Simpler times.
Im honestly impressed you to manged to stay sane whilst painting these. I still recall the rage induced whilst paint these little buggers 28 years later. Only good thing about them they survived being thrown aaalot :) Nice work mate !
It's the worst thing about being an Ork player, especially - if you're like me - and absolutely HATE batch painting things xD
I mean, to be fair, I've only painted 10 so far! It seems impressive, but that's only 25% D-:
Ever stood on one of the bastards. These and the spear men from the fantasy game of the same era too. Pointy bastards.
@@ratty860997 Yes! Hahaha I totally feel your pain. Wasn't there a double dose of pointy in that edition, the high elves and goblin both had spears. I have a vague recollection of pulling one out of my foot once.
@@Eklipze3k That's the thing about Orks. Batch-painting shouldn't be too repetitive because it's encouraged for you to add individuality to every model.
I swear I can smell that acrylic paint from the United States.
Thank you for doing this. As a young and hopeless 10 year old painter when I first got into 40k with second edition, these paint schemes are what I aspired to and spent countless hours dreaming about while reading and re-reading White Dwarf. I never really managed to achieve anything close to these bright, awesome schemes but am grateful for the modern tools that I'm able to use now! I can't wait to see a classic Blood Angel painted up 2e style!
More like this please, The 90s colour scheme pleases me on several levels.
I’m loving these coat d’arms paints, I’d love to pick up gunmetal, I’m getting really sick and tired of leadbelcher
Yeah, 2 pots pf Leadbelcher have gummed up on me in 5 years. Never again!
Ever tried Army Painter Gunmetal? If your gripes with Leadbelcher are that the metallic bits are too big and chunky or the stupid flip top pot, Gunmetal has much finer metallic bits and comes in a dropper bottle. It's my personal favorite dark steel paint, and is £2 cheaper than Citadel.
I'm a big fan of Vallejo metal colours for metallics
@@kaminaalbarn Army Painter's Greedy Gold is amazing as well. Even after a mini has a matt varnish it still retains a great metallic shine without looking gloss.
@@proxytag same, they are the bomb. Vallejo Model Air metallics are awesome as well
Watching them line up in the grid at 0:57 was strangely satisfying.
Not as satisfying as actually doing it, haha
Omg, those were the first ever models I painted😭
Me too! Haha
Me too! Had so many of them in the old 40k box :D
Me too
For me it was the space marines from the 2nd edition starter box.
Think i was like 10 years old or something like that.
Coloured them like blood angels I believe, cause it looked cool. :D
When you're sealing the sand on with the really watery PVA, add a single drop of washing up liquid into the pva/water. It'll break the surface tension and make it soak into the sand even easier. It'll also let you get away with a slightly higher PVA/water ratio which will help seal it down even harder.
Thanks for this I've just picked up a load of these miniatures for my son to practice painting on
I still have half a pot of GW's chestnut ink, great stuff
Brown gold!
love this content! would love to see more nids, red chaos or even standard space marines. But you make everything enjoyable, im surprised you painted all 40 of these guys. definitely above and beyond
I haven't managed all 40 yet, just the 10 in this video, but it WILL happen! :)
1:06 Revell plastic glue? I Can see that you are a man of culture as well. ;-)
Been painting some Epic minis in 90s inspired paint schemes recently. Love the bright colours. The only bit I'm not doing is the Goblin Green bases.
Umm, that's actually illegal! Haha
How heretical
Cool video! My memories of the Citadel paints from the late '80s and early '90s (I think they are the previous generation to the ones Coat D'Arms are recreating) was that they were very transluscent and that fixing mistakes where a dark paint went over a light paint would often be very tough. Also I don't remember Chesnut Ink being as universally good as the Chestnut Wash you were using.
Yeah, honestly, painting the black parts was one of the scariest moments of my life thus far, haha
Do you ever keep the natural colors of the sand - I imagine traveling to different beaches and using the sand to make memento bases.
You should do a video on ork kitbashing. That's one of my favourite aspects about the orks.
Hard to stick with the Grim Dark future thene when painting such cute colourful models :) These were basically 40k clowns. Memories.
Ahh this is exactly what I was planning to do, even down to using the same coat d'arms paints!! You absolute legend, I'm even more excited to get to doing it now!
Great timing! :)
2nd edition. In my eyes, was the best. Love how colourfull the ork minis were.
I wish I could paint more these days. Due to the kung flu I am unable to purchase new paints
Captain Diomedes you poor bugger
There are still a few independent hobby suppliers who are shipping! Good luck :)
This reminds me so much of my first glimpse into the Warhammer world when I was younger and seeing this video is a trip down memory lane for sure! Thank you :)
I’m gonna have to get some of those paints, totally takes me back, I always have some issues if the modern citadel paints. Thanks for the video, that was truly a nostalgia bomb!
I remember painting one of these guys for an in-store painting competition, a loooong time ago.
Yes always drill the barrels :)
This channel has been a great inspiration for me getting into the hobby again.
Thanks for the inspiration and good luck going full time!
I'm a simple man, I hear 'Edinburgh' and I like the video, Edinburgh represent!
I found this channel because i wanted to learn how to play the tabletop (btw, best tutorial ever). Stuck around for all the awesome content, well done!
Those orks look so civilized and neat in that gear almost had me fooled and think its some other race!
I remember the cutting and scraping on these. Not horrible just tedious. THE FEELS!
Discord notification squad yooo.
Ahhh... nostalgia feels good right now.
Yasssss :D
More Nostalgia required!
Need a challenge, a challenge you wouldn't have thought of because it's just wrong?
You might need a bust for this, a 28mm/32mm might be too small:
Paint a mini (or parts of a mini...) with HAMMERITE.
It might be too hard for you, I understand.
I love those little dudes! They look so good! Make me want to go on eBay and get some for this lockdown.
Awesome video and paint job on these, I'm actually painting these guys at the moment, quite fun to do really!
i actually have this box XD. it makes up the a good amount of my ork army. my dad bought it when they where brand new. its crazy how much models have grow.
Oh sweet ! I was following your updates on instagram ! Great to see the video !
Thanks for reminding me I need to post these buggers on Insta! Haha
Coat d'Arms have a real weird coverage. I thin them and need several layers, using them out the pot I think they're a bit too gloopy.
You missed out on the most iconic feature. The black and white checked pattern. How could you!
Major major happy retro vibes; amazing!! Please would you paint a Gretchen in a contemporary style to show the contrast? All the best x
Just a few days ago I’ve also painted 10 of these gretchin as sort of a comeback project. It’s awesome to see them done so nicely! Also, love the soundtrack at the end :D
I recommend using acrylic medium with sand instead of PVA glue. I've had bad experiences with PVA, as it can cure, crack and come off the base!
Nice idea! Thanks :)
@@MidwinterMinis Love the videos. I finally started BSF during lockdown!
you can score the base in a criss cross with a knife first and it helps the pva adhere better
The reason to play Orks
90 of these guys blocking the whole board, haha
I never painted in the 90s (was only born in 97!) But I used to watch my dad paint and the colours and names is still so nostalgic
Pretty rad.
It would have been cool to paint 20 of them in a contemporary style to show the difference on identical models.
My other method of painting is "just get it done, go go go", haha
This was brilliant to see haha, gives me a bit of a flash back as these were the models that made me want to get into the hobby!
Glad you liked it Jade :)
Can you find some Epic minis and paint them at some point
Woah! That would be a challenge, for sure
One thing I realized by looking at those Minis is that not only the price increased since the 90s and maybe the minis quality too
I have been waiting for this vid Grechin are so cool and the 90s paint is grate and thanks a lot l have just ran out of primer and have been borrowing my friends
Sounds like you've got a good friend! :)
They look great, i love the Gobblin Green bases but... i kinda missed the "The Specials" pattern on the front lower tunic; but still, really good. I never had a problem with the sand, i'd get it from a contruction site, the thickness of the grains was bigger than the sand grains on the 4 beaches that we've on the city, also, i always used white coat as base layer and i had to use two layers on the bases, but never three; the Gobblin Green covered pretty well, the colours that i had more problems with were all the reds, yellows and oranges, but... with two layers and a bit of ink... all good. I still have that same painting guide back there in the shelve, next to the late 80s early 90s White Dwarf magazines, that and the DIY was "my Bible" back then; why the hell no one paints the bases in Gobblin Green nowadays!? it was great!.
I'm saving the Ska pattern for the Boyz! :D
@@MidwinterMinis That gonna be great, looking forward to see 'em; stay well.
im and aos player ok.
but
i dont know if hes saying goffs or goths and at this point im too afraid to ask
Can't believe the voucher code still works! 😂
halford spray paint for white base coat. yes used that a lot back in the day.
Wait those models are from 1993??? I have grots older than me!..
They're older than Penny... ;)
That put a serious dent in your plastic shame! :)
Hmmm, only about 2%! Haha
Chestnut ink, Flesh Wash and Boltgun Metal are the holy trinity from the hobby past century.
Ha souvenir souvenir
The little ring thing on the Grot Blastas are sling rings or saddle rings, you'll actually see them on the metal Autoguns of the period as well. There should probably be a leather or canvas strap connecting to a different part of the gun, but the GW weapon designers of the day, much like the modern day, really didn't understand how guns work, just look at the Rogue Trader era Bolters.
What do you mean, are you not supposed to hold huge rocket-rifles by their barrels? Haha
My favorite model holder is an upside down shot glass. You can buy them bulk at the dollar store and they are nice and heavy
Love how you went with the good old goblin green bases.
Really enjoyed this video, have loads of these still in my loft. Even knowing that I won't paint them up in this 90s style, I still really enjoyed the video and your attention to detail regarding the 90s authenticity :-)
Nostalgic overload! Please do all! With back banners and all!
Thanks! I'll try my best :)
Please do more coat d’arms paint guides 🙂
Imagine 40 of these little buggers coming at you
... or 120. What, who has 120? Not me, that's for sure...
My brother plays an all grot army, its madness how many grots he fields
The Coat d'Arms is definitely the same colour but is certainly more translucent, perhaps there are certain compounds that are illegal to use now?
Yeah, that sounds pretty realistic!
@@MidwinterMinis Goblin Green is probably mostly a pigment used in artists paints and US army uniforms called chromium oxide green, which is naturally quite opaque, so your results are surprising. I've picked up one or two Coat d'Arms colours and they do seem a lot thinner than other ranges though.
3:39 You can even work in a small amount of washing up liquid to help the flow!
Having ballasted model train track, it's a trick I picked up from there.
Oh man... I remember my old gretchins... I started my 40k hobby in '99, and they were only available second hand and looked seriously old then!
Lovecraft and 40k perfect combination
I just paint the front of the gun barrels black and line the edges with metal paint.
I do too because I can't be asked to go out and buy a drill
In a weird way the thing I miss the most from back in the day was the way the paints smelled.
Gretchin Goffs,... what an oxymoron, gotta love 90s WH40K.
My Guard blobs . . . 75+ I know the circles of madness. I loved this throw back traditional piece of history.
The "pointy thing" you use for the guide hole appears to be part of an airbrush cleaning kit - or at least mine had a really similar instrument...
Can’t believe you stole prized Portobello sand!
I feel so guilty now, haha
I was 100% like Heisenberg at the end when you were doing the shoutouts, being like "Say my name...". Amazing content as always !
Haha, I hope I didn't disappoint! :)
You know you're doing well when Cthulhu itself is supporting you
The weirdest thing is, I was listening to the audiobook BEFORE he became a patron. SHHPOOOOOKY
Hi Guy : Well if like me and you have not been to Portabella beach, as an alternative and if you have bought it previously and hidden it away for a rainy day - use Vallejo's ground cover which I can reliably tell you dries hard as rock and never fals off no matter what treatment you give it over the years - but it is expensive to buy and goopy to use. 40 Gretchins later ............. oh Yeah!!
I refuse to believe you've never enjoyed the occasionally sunny, often blustery joys of Portobello, Atholl ;)
@@MidwinterMinis No Guy I always preferred blistering hot Tenerife and its volcanic black sand - get enough sunny blustery days in Aberdeen. LOL

I will say something maybe strange. I >>AM>DO NOT
This video takes me back! It made me go "oooh" and "aaah" as I recognize every nook and cranny of that gretchin.
This takes me right back and has inspired me to get a group of 90's models together and give it a go.
By The Emperor's Golden Loo Seat! We've been waiting for this to start!
Goblin green sand bases! *faints*
Did the Chestnut Ink still smell of tea?!??! I remember I got a couple of Swooping Hawks back in the day just so I could use the Hawk Turquoise!
I painted my Dark Angels Co. Master in the metallic green that they had at the time... It was a right mess! (I've forgot what the name of the green was now) lol
Can u paint blood bowl please
Hopefully one day! My battle report buddy Ant is mad about Blood Bowl :)
Thank you; this was a nice addition to my morning walk, Health and blessings to you 👍🏻
Guy! What were you doing before full time painter? If I may ask.. I'm kind of curious!
I was working in the music industry! A bit of lots of things :)
@@MidwinterMinis Anything you can show that was related to you by work?
You and penny need to do a battle report
Cheers for the Halfords tip I'll definitely be taking advantage of that. Hmm, now I just need a whole new set of brushes...
How many patreons you have?
Guy:..... Yes
Awesome video, I'm have vibes of the old judge dreed comics that my father bring to me with that super colorful things you see in 40k, comics, etc of the 80s XD. I'm glad to see you rocking guys ^^
Man, 12 year old me hated those painting guides. Step 1, Prime, OK. Step 2, Base colours, yup usually way too thick, but do-able. Step 3, just do all these highlights to 'Eavy Metal standard. Don't ask how. Just do it.
I could never understand why Blood Angel's were Orange either, so I just painted mine red, and got told off by my mates because I'd painted them wrong. Who's laughing now though!
I still can't edge highlight though.
This makes me want to open that old box of metal Black Orcs and Grimgor IRONHIIIIIDE!!!! Thats been sitting in the limbo-closet since.. 01'? :D
Nice work. really bring back memories of painting a few gretchin way back when. Although that was all that got paint as the Tyranid/genestealer cults list in the rule book took my full attention.
Ah Portobello beach! You pass through Edinburgh at some time? Love the vids folks - and boy were my Gretchin bad in comparison - I recall painting some completely PURPLE!
Man i love this i am painting up some goff grots rn with the same 90s mold. I might just follow along with you!
