@52Miniatures I completely agree. They need to bring back the Ork goofiness. The goblins are my favorite army by far because of the lighthearted approach.

Nothing fills my heart with joy more than an old skool orc champion with bright yellow armor, brandishing a giant axe over his head like a maniac. Wonderful work! I can't wait to paint some classic, and classic looking orcs myself soon!
Im simple. I see classic models and I click. I really like this paint scheme. Its really colorful but slightly muted that gives it a vintage feeling. Like an old memory. And then the piercing red eyes stand out.
"Stirring old humbrol with a toothpick" thats a memory right there, my first model was a bretonian mounted knight painted in bright humbrol enamels 🤣 Still got it too ✌️😊
Lovely video of course, Alex - so much love goes into them, it's obvious! One tip to avoid paint explosions - after shaking a pot of paint, I hold it upside down and give the paint a solid shake, down towards the nozzle. Then when I open it the paint is right there at the business end, often only needing a touch on the wet palette to deliver the minimum amount of paint required. Works for me (works with ketchup and shampoo, too).
Saffron yellow is the best color for an ork. I played with using Dark Jade to shade the muscles and worked lighter using heavy blue grey and stone grey - I let the painting dictate the journey and the destination is one of my favorite orks but certainly not what I thought I was doing
Indeed Ramirez, I like how the yellow worked out. I mean, if I had the time and the will and ever wanted to work on a larger group of orcs I'd want to paint them one by one with different paints.
i break out retro minis now and them. for me its 90's space marines. they are fun projects to keep your creativity up. that orc looks great, it looks like you enjoyed it :)
The colour depth of the yellow really looks cool with that combination of grey-blue and purple! And like you, using purple as a shade colour across a whole piece is something I adore - hasn't failed me yet!
For some reason this video made me realize how much I enjoy your videos! I don’t even like old world but going on a painting journey with you every couple weeks is something I really look forward to! I heard you talking about how poorly this video preformed on one of your live stream so hopefully becoming a new patron on patreon will help you remember that even if a video doesn’t “preform” we still appreciate you Mr. Alex! Cheers from America! 🎉
I had forgotten this champion, though it was a conversion from the old metal bloodbowl orc team at first glance, identical pose to the lineman! Mega nostalgic!
I am totally with you on these old sculpts. I recently painted the 2006 dwarf king with the feathered helmet and I can't remember having so much fun painting a model. Sure, it's not from the 90s but it was still handsculpted and full of character. Really can't put my finger on what it is exactly that these models have that the newer ones don't. Maybe in the end it's just nostalgia, but I think there's more :)
Nice to see an old school orc for some variety. I don't miss the Humbrol enamels though, neither does my mums kitchen table. nothing a little sanding from my dad couldn't fix. Good times!
Loved the in depth analysis of the painting process. Sooner or later I'll get that poor little boss on a boar i never finished when i was a kid another happier life!
I so enjoyed this!! You put across my history of Warhammer Fantasy and the nostalgia for the minis, I'm 58 this year. You probably won't see this comment, but thanks for the smiles as I watched this video with fondness for the mini you were painting. 👍👍Subbed.👍👍😉
I really like the fact, that all your minis look like you painted it. Not a copy of someone else, not trying to fit in with the 'usual' style nowadays. Even your retro style here screams "I'm painted by Alex WAAAGH! BEHOLD THE MIGHTY ORK!" I really enjoy this.
That is how I did my ork skin, I finished off with doing all white, like they're in a black metal band, and had some green showing, like chipped armor. Also did the lips the same.
Great video, and a brilliant model - there's a certain kind of charm about old 80s/90s warhammer minis. Sculpts that aren't as technically brilliant, perhaps, as modern sculpts, but that just ooze character.
I adore the nonchalant or cavalier attitude towards the brand of the paint. Anything will do as long as the paint is nice enough and the color suitable. This is totally something that I validate and it brings nice results, in comparison for the will to stick absolutely to the letter to one color or brand specifically.
I think we get a little brainwashed because of what is widely seen - ie RUclips. It’s deemed more approachable to use what is at the hands of most painter on the other side of the screen. So that means Citadel mainly. But it would be great if we could aproach things more in a manner of colour and not brand.
@@52Miniatures Oh, but I totally validate this eclectic approach. I get that quite a lot of people want to absolutely adhere to a very precise color scheme, with the exact paint used. For my own part, I prefer to see the painting in term of color, like you do. Yellow is yellow, whatever the brand, after all. Anyway, as someone close to your age and w&y of thinking, I always very appreciate your videos, especially when you open a bit to side consideration, sources of inspiration, etc.
I found one of these with a spikey ball and chian over his head. Your recipes are giving me some inspiration. I may go a little redder. After all. "Da RedUns Go Fasta!"
For much of my childhood and adolescence, I played Warhammer Fantasy (it was almost a religion here in Spain, it is very difficult for me to assume that in the rest of the world 40K was more popular), Mordheim, 40K, LOTR and in general anything from Games Workshop. At the first half of my twenties, I stayed away from miniatures completely. Now, at 33, I've gotten interested in some games again and I'm surprised how much has changed for the better. When I was young, I didn't consider playing anything that wasn't from Games Workshop and now my favorite game is Carnevale. I'm putting together crazy Dark Soul-inspired bands for Frostgrave and trying to create scenery to match. But the biggest difference is that before we didn't have RUclips or social networks! This is one of the channels that I have watched and liked the most in recent months, although I have never commented on it. It's great to see people from other parts of the world enjoying this great hobby. Nice ork guy btw, looks like he's having a great time! :)
Thank you for writing Fran, I’m glad to hear you’ve liked the content. I have a few Patrons into Carnevale and it seems like a fun game. You’re quite right, there’s a lot of games out there and more creators working on their own thing showcasing what inspires them. There is a massive GW following and thus it’s “easier” to make videos with that content, often guaranteeing double the views. So it’s a bit of an effort not doing it. So I appreciate when people like you write and let me know it’s appreciated
Ohhh wow!!!!! I love your painting but I particularly love how you tell a story. Your voice is perfect for narration, the actual content is smart and funny, it’s the total package. Thank you for the tips about the lips, I will certainly use it!

A thing about the pose is that 2-dimensional poses were a lot safer to cast in metal- removing them from 2-part moulds was simpler (less fiddly bits to get caught in an overhang) but also with the detail facing downwards or upwards into the surface of the mould, you got better results. A lot like light and shadow with only one or two light sources, I imagine. With more complex manufacturing came more complex options and more complex poses.

Yeah, same here. I'm one of the ones that think goblins kept evolving in the right direction but orks took a little bit to serious a turn.
