- When Russian invaded Ukraine, the BBC and its partners began painstakingly verifying and counting as many deaths as possible.
We identified more than 25,000 named individuals - people we know to have died - setting a bare minimum for Russia's total losses.
The count provides hard evidence of the war's impact on Russian forces. But it has also given answers to grieving families. Some relatives did not even know what had happened to their loved ones until the BBC traced them.

The economy didn’t collapse that only happened after the collapse of the USSR the issue had been its state control and outsized military budget despite which the us still could outspend them
@@TimesFM4532 Afghanistan wasn't considered a vital war from the Soviet Union's perspective of security. Ukraine is, so it doesn't seem like they would just decide to cut their losses, leave Ukraine and let it integrate into NATO. Russia's economy is projected to grow more than the UK's by IMF projections and Russia doesn't same issues of the Soviet Union with multiple nations tied to an ideology that could tear it apart if support for that multi ethnic ideological project dropped. Support for Iraq and Afghanistan became very unpopular in the US. We weren't going to overthrow our government and suffer just because we didn't like the wars. The US government wrapped the wars up on their timeline. Citizens have a vested interest in their country not collapsing.
Full military support and crushing sanctions like the ones the US put on Japan in world war 2 has its own risks (Japan attacked Pearl |Harbor because American sanctions would have destroyed their country in a year and they couldn't convince us to stop.) But this idea that we can half help Ukraine and hope Russia just gives up is pure fantasy. It's either outright swift defeat of Russia, or negotiate with them. This third way we are doing is very dangerous.

If Russia had lost so much, the front would have collapsed long ago. And yes, the side that has absolute superiority in the quality of training (since in Ukraine the training of soldiers takes up to 3 weeks), the amount of equipment, aviation, artillery and ammunition cannot suffer greater losses than the enemy.

Exactly. How can be a journalist so superficial? Everybody knows that Ukraine has offered Russia to retake **trains** full of bodies of Russian killed in action, and Russia refused to take them back. In order not to have to admit the actual numbers and pay the promised compensation to the families of those soldiers.
The deaths on Russian side are likely more than 100 thousands, plus another 200 thousand of wounded.
So many that remain scattered on the fields, rotting, and the ones the Russian army must have cremated.

There is no army in Ukraine, all whom you call "the army" are mercenaries who arrived and joined the detachments of the internal combat corps of national groups, for example, "Azov", "Tornado" and others. This is not an army, these are groups united on the army idea, and funded by the state.
All these groups consist of mercenaries, and those whom the state grabs from the streets and forcibly takes them into the "army".

The number of confirmed losses will rise during reconstruction when the bodies of abandoned Russian soldiers are found. There are a few groups trying to recover bodies regardless of nationality but its a dangerous task during the active conflict.

These are only the graves of soldiers whose bodies were (1) retrieved (2) transported home, and (3) whose deaths or burials were publicly announced - i.e. by family in local papers.

So the sister actually drove a couple of thousand miles and bribed her way into a morgue - and found it was literally a large warehouse, with bodybags and uncovered frozen corpses piled in high mounds. She literally searched among them until she found her brother.
The practice at the time was - if any remains were recovered - to take the zinc coffins back to their home towns one truck at a time, stretched over the weeks and months so that the local population don’t realise their town has lost men by the hundred.

A leaked document from a Russian governmental agency stated that as of August 2022 48K+ Russian soldiers had died, making an avg of 8k per month. As we are now @ the 16 month mark in this war that would make the true # of deaths (if the avg per mo. holds) at 128k.
Use some common sense if Russia lost 128k and we all know they have more power and more soldiers than Ukraine that means 1 Russian soldier death 5 or 6 Ukrainians means Ukraine doesn't have any soldiers left to fight, even if you make it 1 to 3 or 4 that make it 300 to 400k Ukrainian death, you see it doesn't add up.

Russia has obviously suffered heavy losses in Ukraine. I recall watching this History Legends video back in December which estimated 25k kia. Given the brutal scale of fighting, one can only imagine that it is markedly higher now. Supporting Ukraine does not mean stooping down to the level of total propaganda outlets such as RT. Investigative journalism should not limit itself to your foe, it should also cover yiur friend.
