    Hi guys! In today's video I'll talk about my first prime lens that I've bought for the Panasonic Lumix S cameras, the fantastic Zeiss Planar 50mm f1.4! I first had the Contax Yashica version of it, but because I like contrasty and punchy images, the Zeiss Classic are a better match for me!

    My absolute favourite lens ever. There is something magical about how it renders, no other lens I've owned makes me stop and say "wow" when I get a good photo except for maybe the Zeiss Distagon 35mm f2. The colours and contrast are next level. I have the Zeiss 85mm f1.4 Planar arriving tomorrow so am excited to see how it compares to that

    • @LucaBono.Studio

      Yes, this lens is magical! How did you like the 85mm f1.4? I find it a bit better than the 50mm...cheers!

    The bokeh of the Classic ZE/ZF is absolutely one of my favorites. It often reminds me of the Arri Zeiss Standard Speeds Primes T 2.1. I shot my master degree's film with them, the blurry background bokeks look almost like being painted.

    Thank you for one of the very best reviews I've ever seen on this lens. I focus mainly on the fast fifties for most of my work and have way too many. But this lens is the one I would never let go. I love playing with it in f1.4; allowing it to conjure up some magical bokeh. It's bokeh is different from every fifty I've ever used. I own a lot; from the 8-element SuperTakumar; to the Zeis Milvus and Sony GM f1.2. But this one is unique, in the rendering of its background. I couldn't live without it.

    Thanks for your fantastic reviews, they are really helpful and informative. Yesterday, I bought a used one for $248, went to the park to try it out, and took some photos and videos. I started shooting at f/1.4, switched to a smaller aperture for just a couple of photos, then returned to f/1.4, and stuck with it wide open :) The bokeh at f/1.4 with this lens is incredible, very dreamy. Actually, I've been using the Macro-Planar 50mm f/2 EF for the past 10 years. I haven’t seen a macro lens that can outperform the Macro-Planar f/2, even though I use extension tubes which affects its performance, and it was my favorite for portraits as well. I was doubtful about buying the f/1.4 Planar, wondering if I would need it, but my doubts vanished after the first shoots. The light transmission, compact size, and the artistic photos it produces below f/2 make this lens special.

    • @LucaBono.Studio
      @LucaBono.Studio  3 месяца назад

      I'm glad you had the chance to get this lens. Both lenses are definitely complementary, because of the very different look you get from them. Keep in mind that for portraits, the makro planar has a bit better highlights roll-off and it will work better in contrasty scenes. Cheers!

    Ciao Luca, great review, I'm totally with you. The ZE 1.4/50 was my first Zeiss lens I've bought and now I have a set of 8, ranging from 18 to 85. The latest 1.4/85 would be an aboslut recommendation for you, similiar characteristics then the 1.4/50 and probably one of the best portrait lenses out there.

    Good review because you didn't concentrate on nonsense like test charts for corner sharpness etc. These lenses are art tools not scientific instruments.
    I have the Contax/Yashica Zeiss 50mm f1.7. That's a bargain lens. I recognise some similarities from what you describe. However, the 1.7 seems to have different colour rendition from other Contax/Yashica. I have the 28mm f2.8 and that's got much more vibrant colours, especially green. That's a great landscape lens.
    I have the Zeiss Distagon ZF 15mm f2.8 but 20mm is a favourite focal length of mine so I'm thinking about getting the ZF 21mm f2.8 next. One thing I love about the 15mm is extremely good rendition from strong light sources. You can point directly at the sun with great results. I don't think any other lens renders skies like the 15mm. The extreme wide angle, great flaring control and typical Zeiss micro contrast make it phenomenal for atmospheric skies. Another nice Zeiss wide angle is the old Jena Flektogon 20mm f4. I don't like the much praised Jena Flektogon 35mm but the 20mm is unique. It has some flaws. Colour rendition is not that great, it's low contrast, build quality is shaky and it's not super sharp but sharp enough. Where this lens excells is in black and white architecture shots. It has virtually no distortion and great 3D pop with beautiful monotone shading. Hence I'm thinking the 21mm f2.8 ZF would be good. I doubt it will have as much 3D pop due to more elements but the other problems would be improved and it should have the same very good flaring control as the 15mm.

    • @LucaBono.Studio

      Thanks Ryan!
      I never tried the 50mm f1.7, it never attracted me because of the 0.6m minimum focus distance, but for the price I'm sure it's a great lens.
      Thanks for sharing your experience with your lenses. It's super helpful and I really appreciate it! I never played and considered the Jena because I don't wont to be sucked in another black hole of vintage lenses ahahah. I've everything I need!
      The 15mm f2.8 is wild! I also have it and it's an incredible lens.
      The 21mm f2.8 is also nice, but it's playing on a lower tier when compared to the 15mm f2.8 and 25mm f2.
      Just be careful when you test the 21mm, if you buy it. There are a lot of decentered lenses in the used market. Good luck with the hunt!

      @@ThierryFLBP You know how this all works, it’s a sickness, hahaha. So, I started out with an eBay acquired Sony NEX 5n with the 16MP ASP-C sensor. I was blown away at the quality of the photos, and soon after I got a Sony NEX 7 24MP ASP-C from KEH which floored me, but didn’t do quite as well with low light, being the Megapixels are smaller, but in good light, it’s astonishing. Since of coarse they are manual focus, Video is mind-blowing through them. But I was dealing with the 1.5x Crop factor, and a speedbooster just to get 0.7x was going to be $500, so I invested in a full frame Sony a7r. Now honestly, I thought I would just love the full frame 37MP a7, but the size and sharp images from the NEX 7 just have a certain je ne sais quoi!!! And the small compact carry size for World Travel is just a no brainer, and the light carry really made me regret trying to go full frame, and the a7 may be the first camera I’ve ever sold. The NEX photos are indistinguishable to us even pixel peeping. As far as adapters, I’ve a wide range, but they are just dumb boxes basically, and all performed very well from $10-50, so no need to splurge there. So just a cheap QBM to E Mount, and you are ready! They are actually made just short of Infinity, so you go to infinity then down the range of ft/meters focus, so getting infinity has never been an issue, except on my Carl Zeiss HFT Sonnar 85/2.8 for some reason??? Could be the lens has an issue wide open, it will focus to infinity at f5.6 to smaller openings. The Planar 85/1.4 does focus to infinity wide open, so no idea there. Another cool thing about going Sony is that the e-mount Zeiss Touits (AutoFocus) Planar 32/1.8 and Distagon 12/2.8 can be found for $200 apiece and are excellent for photography. Zeiss Autofocus! But terribly loud focus motor for Videos.

    • @kylestokes4501
      @kylestokes4501 6 месяцев назад

      @@ThierryFLBP SONY all the way!!! NEX 5n (for better light, but less MP) and NEX 7 (Stunningly sharp B&W, especially travel photos). For adaptors, ANY. I got cheap $10 to $50 E-Mount to QBM adapters, and all perform extremely well at infinity(actually go a little beyond infinity). I’ve only had to adjust the Carl Zeiss Sonnar HFT 85/2.8 to get sharp focus at infinity. The most important- the Huge Pro- these cameras have great “focus peaking” to assure Sharp Images without missing focus(Highlights features when in Focus). The only Con I can think of is the 1.5x crop factor of APS-C. However- if you want ultra-wide, there’s the Zeiss Touit Distagon 12/2.8 (which has Autofocus) can be obtained for $200!!! The only Con with it is the lens isn’t great for Video.

      I haven't used any of the Zeisses, but from my Nikon set, I really love the 50 mm f/1.4 :)
      I occasionally take the Helios 44-4 for some swirly bokeh, but it's not ideal for video work because of general softness

      Right now, it is my Minolta MD 50mm f/2 lens. Lots of spherical aberration when shot wide open (which I like). The bokeh is kind of "meh" once you stop down because it has strong hexagon shape at f/2.8 or so. However, that CAN be interesting if you want bokeh that looks different from other bokeh. Would be better if it had a closer minimum focus distance.

      Ciao Luca, sto pensando di comprare una S1 o una S5 e mi piacerebbe prendere un paio di obiettivi vintage.
      Ora, siccome possiedo giá una Yashica FX-3 super 2000 a pellicola, volevo chiederti quale adattore prendere per la Lumix per poter usare lenti con attacco appunto C/Y (in modo da riuscire a usare le lenti per entrambi i corpi -Yashica e Lumix, se questo é possibile).
      Grazie mille se vorrai rispondermi! 🖐

      Ma è così relativamente brutto da usare a f1.4 come dicono? O dipende soprattutto dalla distanza in cui lo si usa? HI Luca, Im just wondering, do you think using a Pro mist filter with this lens is actually helpful to achieve a cinematic look? I mean, haven't you got it with the lens already? Im asking because I have this exact dilemma right now 😂

I hope it's clear now, cheers!

    I couldn't care less about bokeh. I'm not a bokeh junkie. Most people who view your images couldn't give a shit about the out of focus rendering wide open. Personally, I hate images shot wide open. The most iconic images ever weren't shot wide open. It's just a fad. All I know that this lens is stunning between f4/f8, has gorgeous rendering character and 3D pop, and it is a joy to use. That is all I need from a lens.

    • @LucaBono.Studio

      @@LucaBono.Studiototally. You can shoot at f4 and adjust your distace to subject and you will get some lovely silky smooth rendering if that is important to you. Like you said, you need to know the strengths and weaknesses of the lens. This glass is made with lead so it is one of the reasons for its unique image character .

      They don't care about it true, because they're not conscious about the difference between good bokeh and bad bokeh. However, they will intuitively be drawn towards an image with creamy bokeh and good microcontrat and saturation. On the other hand, a lens like the cheap nifty fifty canon will give uninteresting images that will be less attention grabbing because it renders really rather bad. This lens is a feast to the eyes.
