Ciao guys! In today's video I talk about my best lens of my kit, the Zeiss Classic 35mm F2 ZF! I use this lens with all my mirrorless camera (mostly the Panasonic S1 & S5), thanks to the passive 20$ adapter, both for photos and videos!

great video. I think the zeiss 35 f1.4 has a bit more magic
I do have to say, your channel is really underrated. After watching a few videos on lenses, the amount of technical knowledge you pack your videos with, down to fine details is well above the average for this type of content. You also seem to find a good balance between expressing the more technical, objective aspects and the artistic subjective ones in your approach to these reviews. Well done, keep going!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you like my reviews. Ciao!
I absolutely agree. I cannot believe Luca doesn't have more viewers! Because of him I got the Zeiss Classic 50mm f/1.4 and I have never been less disappointed with a purchase. Thank you!
I have this lens, and shoot mainly black and white. I don't bother the chomatic aberation because in is not visible in black and white.
This lens is phenomenal for black and white!
I should try it for b&w photography! Thanks
That lens is killer. I have the Canon mount version. You did an excellent job explaining its character. Truly a great lens.
I just bought a ZF off eBay and, watching your very informative video, looks like I'm going to be enjoyingit! Also, great ending - made me subscribe :)
I'm glad you enjoy it! I'm sure you'll love that lens. Cheers!
One of my favorites from the ZE series and my first chice for full frame photography.
Same here! 🤟🏻
Just received a copy of this lens today, and it looked great on a studio headshot! Excited to try it out on a video shoot this weekend. Thanks so much for all your content, Luca!
Congrats mate! Enjoy it! 🤟🏻
Dopo aver visto e rivisto il tuo video, ho deciso di prendere una Zeiss Distagon 35mm f2 ZF-I, spero ne valga la pena, grazie per questi video di queste lenti “old school”!
Ti piacera sicuramente! Grazie a te e buon natale!
Great video Luca. 'I love this silver finish' moment was the best part of the video! Haha. =)
Thanks mate! I was thinking to take out my hat, to shine even more...but I'll keep it for another video 🤣
Amazing as always.
No way to describe these photos..from this lense, simply the very best, period
Yeah this lens is simply fantastic! Thank you for watching!
Would love to see comparisons between the Leica 35mm f2 and Zeiss classic Distagon 35mm f2. Interesting how you are swapping Contax for Zeiss classic, your reasoning is sound.
Amazing lens, my favourite 35mm. Beautiful
Yes this lens is beautiful! Thank you for watching my friend!
Great review again ! Good job Luca
Thank you Didier!
Luca Wow this is a beautiful lens - I will get one 🎬 Thank you for sharing, friend ⛩
Schweeet! Sold my Planar a while ago, but I think im ready to move to the 35mm Dista now : )
You will not regret it!
You should try the Zeiss 25mm F2 ZF.2. If you like the 35mm ZF, you will love the 25mm. Aspheric optical surface, made of special glass with anomalous partial dispersion and floating elements design (floating, just like the 35mm ZF or Leica 24mm). The lens has a lot more flares compared to the 35mm and has that Zeiss 3d pop.
Hey Bobby, thanks for the tip! In reality I've the 25mm f2 ahahah, it's amazing I know. I'm more a 35mm guy, I use the 25mm just for video and sometimes for astrophotography!
I have the 2/28 classic and i’m really satisfied. It costs like the contax 2.8 version but quality is better. More similar to Hollywood
I like it and considered it, but decided on the Sigma 35mm f2 as a pair with the 65mm f2. Both also very (too) sharp so 1/8th diffusion on mine also. I like to shoot them full frame inside and cropped (as a ‘50’ and ‘100’) outdoors on a pair of bodies. The AF is great to have though I use a mix of AF and manual.
I’ve moved onto Leica cameras from Canon. I never sold a single one of my 8- ZE lenses. I’ll probably pick up a SL3 for them when I can get my head around selling my Canon R5 bodies.
These lenses are difficult to let them go 😅
Same preference with CA, I also find that not exaggerated ca makes the images more realistic :)
Such a good descripcion of the lens Luca! you are right its a better inversion the nikon ZF than the canon mount ,that manual ring i asume is so much better than the mc-21 adapter.
also the contrast etc etc
Thanks Fabricio! Yes a fully manual lens is better also to avoid the problem of damaged cpu contacts of the lens...then you'll be not able to open or close the iris anymore :(
There are many very substantial advantages to the Canon mount if you shoot Sony.
Try the nikkon 35mm f2D its about $100 and performs nearly the same. Slightly less sharp but the rendering and microcontrast match the Zeiess. I owned one. Its magic.
Thanks for the suggestion! I did try the Nikon 35mm f2D and I didn't like it that much both for the image quality and the mechanics. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, very interesting.
My pleasure!
Every Zeiss ZF Classic is a joy to use, just that using them with adapter on any mirrorless body will make it so long and front heavy. The overall weight wont have any advantage compared with using on nikon dslr.
Nope.
Amazing lens. I use this on the GFX system and love the character. I its more like a 27mm with the crop factor of the GFX.
Oh nice! I would love to see the results! Send me a link on IG!
@@LucaBono.Studio not in IG 😂
Thank you Brother for another super video
Wow this is a nice welcome intro. Hello my friend Luca 😄
Thank you Marc! When you pass by the Netherlands drop me a message for a free beer!
looking great sir! thank you for the advice!
Can't go wrong with Zeiss glass!
It feels incredible to be so in sync with photographic tastes; I really find myself here, especially as I keep rewatching those Zeiss videos :D Have you had a chance to try the f/1.4 version? It seems to be on par with the Planar 50 f/1.4, especially in terms of bokeh and those lovely imperfections. I currently have the 28 f/2, and last year, I tried a 35 f/2 alongside it for a few shoots but couldn’t see any difference in the images. I'm considering adding the 35 f/1.4 to my Zeiss collection, but I'm undecided because it's both large and has a long focus throw.
Thanks! In your case, I would skip the 35mm. 28mm and 50mm are a perfect combination. Maybe you should consider the 135mm Apo ;)
Thank you for your fast reply. I have the Milvus 135mm Apo :) You can find a video that I shared on my channel, using the Lumix S5 with an extension tube. It's a fantastic lens on a full-frame camera with IBIS. The Distagon 21/2.8 will be my next target.
Isn’t the ZF preferable over the ZE if you want to use it with an adapter?
The ZE has an electronic aperture, so you need an EF adapter that supports electronic controls.
The ZF has full manual controls, including aperture.
Yeah, ZF is better than ZE. Cheers!
Hello brother, I have a question. the lenses like that one and the others like the Carl Zeiss Distagon 2.8/21 ZE.
-Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/35 ZE Lens
-Carl Zeiss Planar 1.4/50 lens
Do they work in full frame? ❤
Hi! Yes, they are full frame lenses. Cheers!
beautiful pictures.
Thank you! ✌🏻
my favorite lens ...great review
Thanks for watching mate!
I have both ZF (using an adapter for Canon) and ZE versions. ZE is thicker and heavier with a longer focus throw. Both are equally good. Hard to decide which to keep.
Thanks for watching mate! Are both lenses f2?
The ZF has full manual control, the ZE needs electronic aperture control, so no dumb adapters if you want to stop down.
whats the difference between the ze/zf and the zs 35 f2?
Awesome video! How's the focus throw? Is it long like film photo lenses or short like modern photo lenses?
Thanks mate! I think it's around 120° of rotation. Between 1m and infinity is around 30° of rotation. Cheers!
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing. IS the focus tab have a knob like the 1.4? How do you mount focus-ring gears?
Thank you! No, this lens is not for Leica rangefinder cameras, so it doesn't have the knob in the focus ring. Cheers!
Please review the 135 F2 APO Sonnar - Enjoying your Zeiss classic reviews
I'm working on it and it will come soon!
Barrel distortion is different to field curvature...
Field Curvature, also known as “curvature of field” or “Petzval field curvature”, is a common optical problem that causes a flat object to appear sharp only in a certain part(s) of the frame, instead of being uniformly sharp across the frame.
Distorsion : In geometric optics, distortion is a deviation from rectilinear projection; a projection in which straight lines in a scene remain straight in an image. It is a form of optical aberration
So this lens suffers both from barrel distortion and from field curvature! Thanks David!
Great video - thanks!
Hmmmm so basically, the classic Zeiss ZE lenses dont have aperture blades internally because of the electrics? And ZF does ? Hence why ZFs are manual? I’m just trying to hear that correctly! If so thanks for clarifying. !
Hi buddy! With the ZF you can control manually the aperture blades and with the ZE you can only control them electronically...IMHO the ZF are the lenses to get. Cheers!
Thank you for this review!!!!
Thanks for watching Hanul!
@@LucaBono.Studio I own the classic ZF.2 21mm, 25mm, 50mm (f/1.4) and 85mm. 35mm is legendary. Really appreciated this breakdown. Can I ask what Lumix camera did you film the video footage on? I'm hoping for full sensor but my faves (Panny Lumix and Fujifilm X-T4) are all crop sensors. Thinking I should go full sensor.
I've the same lenses as you! My favorite is the 25mm f2 :)
I use the Lumix S, full frame, cameras. Yeah, you should get a full frame camera, the lenses are designed for 35mm sensor size. Cheers!
@@LucaBono.Studio ❤❤❤❤ you have a fan for life. Thank you, Luca. Your work is beautiful!!!
Hello between this and the distagon 28 f2 which one do you prefer?
I never used the distagon 28mm f2, sorry
S1 vs S5, which is better for video first ?
S1
Did you buy the Nikon f mount adapter or the Nikon G/F adapter for L mount?
nikon g/f
So is this lens really better than it's obvious contender, the classic 35mm f1.4? I've looked on ebay, and it's very rare to see a f2 lens to be nearly as expensive as it's f1.4 family member
No, it's not better than the Distagon Classic 35mm f1.4. But that lens is really big and heavy...that's something to consider as well.
@@LucaBono.Studio Ah, I see, thanks! I had already set my mind upon the 1.4, but your video caused me to doubt;)
The Distagon 35mm f1.4 is almost as big and heavy as one Otus lens...maybe try it before you buy it. Cheers!
gracie, I'd like you to review the AIS 35/1.4 :)
Theres also a budget version of this lens.. in a way. The nikon 35mm f2D lens... it has the same level of micro contrast and 3D-pop-rendition... it's only slightly less sharp as this INSANELY sharp lens.
I never had the chance to try that nikon lens...thanks for the suggestion! Cheers!
@@LucaBono.Studio no problem. I miss my zeiss collection a lot.. but I also had a voigtlander color skopar set, they are great lenses as well. The 58mm lens is killer.
How do You handle focusing in different direction????
With practice ;)
What adapter did you use to declick this Zeiss 35mm F2 so I can use it for filmmaking? That wasn’t quite clear for me. Thank you for your help. How does using and adapter mimic a custom declicked aperture?
I've a link in the description...I've bought mine from ebay
grande ottimo review
Grazie mille!
What adapter did you use for kinda declicked aperture? Does it needs ZF or ZF2 lens?
I've the link in the description of the video. The lens can be both ZF and ZF.2, it doesn't matter.
would you get this for a canon 5DSr
I've no experience with DSLR cameras, sorry. Maybe someone else can reply to this question?
My best 35mm are the new Voigtländer 35mm 2.0 APO Lanthar on Sony A7RIV. I can very highly recommend this Lens !
Entirely different rendering.
What filter are you using?
Fixed NDs
Contrast , out-of-focus rendering , transitioning from plane of focus to out-of-focus , shadow detail and lastly color!.
This is where 35mm f2 ze/zf really shines.
There are so many things to love about in this lens! Thanks for for watching!
hold up a sec??? Did you say you swapped your S5 for a Leica SL ??
Hey Doug! I had to send my S5 to let it repair, the IBIS broke...so the camera shop gave me the Leica SL in the meanwhile to be able to keep working. Thank you for watching!
@@LucaBono.Studio love your channel buddy! What do you think of the video shooting on the Leica compared to the S5? It would be interesting to have a comparison!
@@the_black_douglas9041 Hey Doug, sorry but I've missed your reply...I don't get the notifications after the first comment! The Leica SL is not a great camera for video shooting. It crops by 1.5 times to film in 4k up to 30fps and the lack of a tilting or flippy screen make everything very unpractical.
Take a sip every time he says Character
We will all get drunk mate...ahahah!
What's your favorite 35mm lens?
Yongnuo 35mm F2 full frame af lens, I have it on my Nikon D300s at the moment.
Excellent results, it is a 50mm on this digital camera.
I use it on my 35mm film af Nikon f75. Covers perfectly with good af speed, contrast, colour and sharpness. I like bargains and stay well away from Leica and Contax glass.
Elmarit 2.8
Leica summicron-R 35 2.0. Toghether with the 28, 50 and 90, the ones I use for video. :)
At the moment, Zeiss Distagon 35mm f1.4 ZM (Leica M mount). It works well on the S5, creates video with a very high quality look, and takes beautiful images. I would still like to try a Leica Summicron R 35.
Voigtländer Apo-Lanthar 35mm F2 Aspherical
My girlfriend is in the video, so I guess I'll watch it ahhah
She's a fantastic model with a great personality ✌🏻
Thank you for watching!
Zeiss 35mm fleki
Distoration is about normal for a slr wide lens not more then 2% - and it actually has nothing to do with the shape of the front element. To illustrate look at the Zeiss 35/2.0 ZM Biogon it has no distortion at all and a bulbous front Element. Do your homework before youtubing.
same thing with CAs nothing to do with sensor glass thickness in that case... as the rayangles should not be that extreme, its a slr lens!
@@johannsasarman2477 CAs have indeed to do with digital sensors, because they add reflections and reflections inside the system are generally bad.
Stop giving away all the secrets!
Ahahaha you're right my friend! Thank you for watching!
@@LucaBono.Studio Your videos deserve to blow up but I’m secretly hoping you don’t. There won’t be a distagon left 🤫
@@iClevre Ahahah I know mate don't worry! Every time I'm making one of these videos I feel like I'm doing something bad for us ahahah
I find this lens to be extremely overpriced and bokeh is average
This lens can be found for 400/500€ in the used market and I don't think is overpriced. Obviously the look of this lens is not for everyone, but I like it. Cheers!
