We backpacked to Lake Como and camped for a few nights between the summit hike. Over the three days we clocked 15-miles roundtrip of hiking.

Blanca Peak beat me up and took my lunch money back in early June of 2006. I was a teenager climbing solo, traveling light, aiming to do it as a day hike. I summited in the mid-afternoon, but then descended into the wrong basin and took an embarrassingly long time to figure it out. After three days and two nights, I stumbled out of there and bummed a ride over close to where my car was parked. I had gone a few days without food, but the Wendy's drive-through was the only place that was still open after I got back to my hotel. I bought a ton of food but found I couldn't eat very much at a time. So I went back to the hotel and spent the night in this weird cycle of sleeping an hour or two, eating what I could, sleeping another hour or so, eating more, etc. Certainly an adventure

Kansas man here. I typically do a big long road trip each year hitting up national parks and stuff but taking a shorter trip this September.
I'm planning on hitting Blanca Peak myself but looks like by the way of that road i'll be hiking up pretty early too lol.
    Great video!

Oh how fun. I cannot deny Lake Como Road is THE WORST, but the hike is so incredibly rewarding! Enjoy it ❤️🌮

Truly astonishing, incredible, wowowow. Were there any spots on the climb up where it seemed to go straight up like a 90° wall or any super steep spots where it's more like rock climbing than hiking? 🤔 thanks for sharing this awesome hike 😮

Not on the route we chose, but you very easily could pick a path that was more like rock climbing than hiking!

I've only driven the road up to Zapata falls trailhead!... that one actually shook my old truck apart... hopefully new one can handle it better!! 😂 im planning to hike this early April. Going from the eclipse in Texas to New Mexico wheeler peak. If body does alright with altitude going for blanca peak and would be first 14er!! Sadly I don't have as much time as hoped to acclimate so we'll see what my Midwest lungs can handle 😂

Good luck! Also that road to Zapata is TOUGH. About equal to Lake Como Road, just shorter.

I was in the area just a week ago. There is a LOT of snow on Blanca this year. It won't be close to gone in the couple of weeks until you plan to go. Unless you're prepared for a full on winter conditions ascent, with snowshoes, crampons and ice axe, you probably will need to wait until mid May or possibly even June.

@russlehman2070 thanks for the update! I'm going as high as feels safe, being solo a have to play on side of caution alittle.... I'm rocking shoeshoes, and will see how 13k in New Mexico goes first! Just got done with a blizzard over night trip testing gear in some smaller mountains!

@@SuperdutyExplorerGood to know. I thought I'd mention it, as a lot of people from out of state don't realize how late the snow can stick around in Colorado, and come in April or May expecting summer conditions.
Also, the Sangre de Cristos often don''t get as much snow as the mountains farther west, but there was a big storm in March that really dumped on the east side of the divide.
