- September 23rd/24th summit hike video for Blanca Peak and Ellingwood Point, my 36th and 37th Colorado 14er! This is my last 14er video from 2021, heres to many more in 2022!
It was a surprisingly difficult hike up to Lake Como, definitely harder to get to the lake than to get to the summit of Blanca!
Shot on my Sony A1 + Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM in 4K/24p 4:2:2 10-bit.
Edited in Final Cut Pro X
Color graded with the Phantom A7sIII LUTs

Thanks for watching!
Climbed Blanca in '64, the lake was private then and the lady/owner stayed in the old cabin to watch over the trout they raised. She made a chocolat cake and gave us some...umm good. There was a canister on top you signed back then and the cable was still there in the crevice. Got caught in an electrical storm on the way down and saw St Elmos Fire. Came a few years later and did Little Bear and the Sidewalk to Blanca then another trip of the Ellingwood Traverse. Wonderful experience and great memories as I see it each day from my house in the valley.
I like how you point out other significant peaks in el horizonte.
Only 30 likes? This video is awesome!
Great video! I hated the Lake Como road but loved the Blanca climb. I did Ellingwood from Zapata Falls and it was so beautiful. Excellent Job!
Thanks man! That road is my least favorite hike I think I have ever done! But being on top of Blanca makes it worth it!
what an amazing hike and video love the views and editing style the background music was on point I'm thru hiking the Colorado trail this summer on my channel thank you for getting me excited for the Colorado outdoors just subscribed!!!
Great effort and beautifully captured. Enjoy the rest of the list, I can't wait to see where you get up to next season!
Thanks so much! I've got some plans in the works for some great climbs!
Nice video. I like that you overlay the names of the prominent peaks on your landscape shots. That's something I have a hard time identifying while I'm up there. I did these ~1 year after you did for my 35th and 36th 14ers. Did you get Little Bear this year?
Also, Lake Como road is no joke. I drove up further than you did, but it's a beast no matter what.
Awesome video!
Thanks so much! It is one of my favorite ascents!
Thank you for sharing your adeventure. Im going to attempt blanca too, can i just park off the side of como road as far as my car can take me?
Yep, as far up as you make it as long as it’s off the road so other cars can pass! Blanca is one of my favorite peaks, so have fun!
Congrats Kevin!
Thanks! It was a great hike!
Bro, where can I get that buff?? I love the southwest motif
It’s a nice one! Honestly I bought it at the small outdoor shop in Westcliffe Colorado before I did Humboldt peak earlier in 2021, so I don’t know the exact brand or anything.
@@KevinFeddewow, thanks for the fast response! Hopefully I can find something similar some day lol
At 16:38 you can see "Lily Lake" - the crater lake at about 12500 ft. Is it possible to walk from where you were to Lily Lake? I am thinking of coming up the Herefano valley to Lily Lake and then cutting across to ascend to Blanca. Is that possible? Looks like its navigable from the video and you may have walked right above it going to Ellingwood Pt.
It looks like its the lake on the right side of the frame, correct? Its a pretty big cliff on the other side of the Ellingwood/Blanca ridge, I'm not sure if it would be 100% possible without some pretty serious climbing. I do remember looking over the ridge when I hit the large cairn before turning right to head up Blanca and it was pretty much vertical.
Beautifully edited video and excellent work on knocking out 2 big ones. At the end, it sounded like you had 5.2 mi from camp at Lake Como to where you parked. Do you know how many miles in from the main road you parked?
Thanks so much! I think I ended up parking about 2 1/2 miles up the road?
great hike. i miss my old xterra, sold last year after 150k.
Its so good! Mine literally just passed 200,000 last week, and still going strong. It was definitely one of my favorite Colorado 14er hikes so far, and a good practice for some harder hikes I'm planning next year.
Is the trail relatively easy to follow?
@@ryantish2416 it was decently easy to follow up to the saddle between Blanca and Ellingwood. Definitely less easy to follow up to Blanca and over to Ellingwood. Then there basically isn’t a trail down from Ellingwood back.
I'm knocking out the hike from Lake Como road to Blanca Peak in one day in the next 2 weeks.
Was the trail fairly reasonable to stay on track and not get lost?
Hey, have fun! It’s a slog up there but one of my favorite spots in Colorado! The trail was pretty easy to follow all the way up, yeah. Just stay slightly to the right of the top of the ridge towards the top of Blanca and you will be good.
Awesome. Thanks!
I'm just a Kansas flat lander getting my annual breath of mountain air in.
Much respect for the film work. The extra miles to go fetch the camera had to add up lol.@@KevinFedde
nice video quality, what kind of camera ?
Thanks so much! This was shot with my Sony A1 and Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM lens, so quite a heavy setup but worth the weight!
after the saddle carin, would you rate it as class 2 or 3 ?
Up to the summit of Blanca definitely class 2+, then over to Ellingwood I would say easy class 3.
Real dedication to purposely leave a camera recording and have to backtrack anywhere on that mtn or godforsaken “road” lol
Heh, thanks! It definitely adds a bit of distance to the hike! Worth it though I think!
Couldn't watch the video. Constant music was way to annoying.
Going to find a different blanca peak video to watch
Fair enough.
