My wife and I hiked Elbert back in 2002 at the age of 51 and 50. Living in southern Illinois at about 500 feet elevation and only spending 3 days acclimating, it was brutal on the lungs. We started about 5:30 am with clear, cold skies. It took longer than we'd hoped mostly because I was having such a hard time breathing and I thought I would be fine since I'd never had elevation problems before. It clouded up mid morning and we climbed in snow flakes and snow pellets. Got to the top, took several pics, signed the log book and started down with lightning and thunder not far off. We drove to Ouray that afternoon and celebrated with a nice dinner at Bon Ton. Two months later I had a minor heart attack and had my 1st stent put in my heart. 16 years later, I had the opportunity to climb Angels Landing in Zion. Mission accomplished and I think I enjoyed that even more than Elbert. Then, 10 weeks later, I had a massive heart attack. Luckily 3 more stents took care of that for a total of 8 and I'm afraid my hikes like tho
se are a thing of the past. I sure enjoy watching your hikes and travels to the San Juans though and really wish I would've known about the 3 Lakes Trail near Mt. Sneffles. That looks like one of the most beautiful places in the most beautiful part of Colorado. Next time in Ouray area, take a day and rent a jeep and do the trail from Ouray to Telluride thru Imogene Pass. You will LOVE it!!

Wow way to go! That is such a tough hike! We're glad to here you're doing ok even though tough trekking may be in the past.
3 Lakes Trail was a gem of a find! We did rent a Jeep to go through the mountains, but it was a bit too early in the season to do the Imogene Pass, but we did a few other fun ones! Can't wait to do it again sometime!
      Thanks, Tom!

We were just there in early June. We found a great free camp spot too- right by twin lakes and up against the Colorado trail. My son (21 yrs) and daughter (16 yrs!) hiked Mt Elbert on the path closest to Twin Lakes (south?). They/ we didn't do the research you did and their hike was around 20 miles. They took a beautiful picture at the summit of the rain falling on us down below while they had none thankfully. This video made me smile- thanks! You really do a great job of showing the best places to see. We have much more to see!

We almost did that route since it was right by where we camped! But didn't want to walk the road to the trailhead, which is what makes it SO long. We are so glad they made it to the top!

Did this one August 2022, also my first 14er. Elbert is nicknamed “the gentle giant”, but it was still really tough. The first false summit is really demoralizing, even when you are aware that it is not the true summit. Once you get past it, the rest is still challenging, but not as bad. Just got to go low and slow as they say. Congratulations on bagging this one!

Hello Adventurers😊😊, haha just when you thought you made it to the top...more mountain to climb! WOW...that mountain is HUGE and awesome view in every direction! Those Rocky Mountain Pies looked SOOOO GOOD! So, Rocky Mountain National Park is next? Great choice, Rocky Mountain is one of my favorites parks. I really like the trail that starts from the Alpine Visitors Center and you climb up steps, WAY up there to the very top, and the view is ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR! I have been to this park several times and I know your going to love Rocky Mountain National Park. I can't wait see this Rocky Mountain National Park footage. Great video👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍! Ohhh, are you going to head east to New England?

Beautiful!!! I've definitely made the mistake of thinking that the spot I was heading too was closer (or even in view XD) only to get there and me like "Argh!" Congratulations on making the summit! I was loving all the mountain wildflowers too.

Back in the early 1970's when I went to college at Colorado Mountain College myself and a group of other students climbed Mt. Elbert. We hiked one day to the Hallenbeck cabin and spent the evening there. We arose at 1 am and began the climb. It was a cloudy morning and we had to climb through a white out. We were led and the pace was set by a student from Outward Bound. He carried a full pack and wore shorts. When we arrived at the summit the sun was just beginning to rise so the clouds below us turned a beautiful red orange with just the tops of the tallest mountains peaking through. It was -55 degrees. I didn't have gloves and my hands would become numb when I tried to sign the register so it was signed for me by a friend. The pace setter got in his sleeping bag and used his stove to make everyone tea while we waited for the sun to be fully up. I quickly left after that. We used a large snow field to slide down much of the way without having to hike.

My wife's aunt and uncle own High Mountain Pies and whenever we make the trek out to Leadville we end up eating a LOT of pizza (and ribs, and their sandwiches... everything there is delicious!) Honestly, it's the best pizza we've ever had and it tastes even better after a 14er! They crank out a lot of food from that little kitchen - I think Vicki said she clocked over 10 miles of walking in a single shift. Looking forward to seeing your RMNP videos!
