Mount Elbert: Colorado's Highest Point

- What Mount Elbert lacks in excitement it more than makes up in its views from the summit. After Climbing New Mexico's highest point I packed up and drove to Colorado where I climbed Mount Elbert the next morning. After getting an early morning glimpse of the mountain I cancelled my plans to ski Elbert and instead ascended it on foot. It was a fairly easy and lackluster ascent but the views from the summit were top shelf.
Jeeze man, all those times you're running past the camera... having to go back and pick it up, good work!
i was just thinking this
Yup, I think this about most of his videos. It’s way more than just climbing to the top!
you guys are the gold standard for humility, integrity, and competence. Keep up the good work.
I love these videos so much you deserve so many more subscribers, the quality is insane and what you guys can accomplish is unbelievable and so inspiring to get out and explore
As a Cajun from the gulf Coast prairies, I had always imagined it would take a day or two of rugged rock climbing to summit there. Inspiring video, thank you.
A week away from doing Wheeler, Elbert, Quandary and a few other 14ers. Super pumped. Love your channel - inspirational content. Thanks Danny.
Not only is it the highest point in CO, it's the highest in all of the Rocky Mountains. I've been thinking this is a hike I could maybe handle so thanks for posting it.
I hiked mt.Elbert a few years ago and what I can say is the only real challenge is how long the walk is. If you do it during the summer it should be a piece of cake👍
It's pretty straight forward.
If you guys get the chance, do some exploring in the San Juan Mountains in SW Colorado. In short it’s the highest density of 13,000ft and higher peaks in the continent!
Mt Sneffels would be the one to look at... great stuff from the blue lakes pass side
Some good sasquatch sighting reports out of the San Juans also...BFRO....
Justin Bayola Sneffles is relatively short, 4 miles round trip, but it has one hell of a view though.
@@rockies5295 its only 4 mi rd trip from the yankee boy basin side but there are many routes in the area that summit sneffels that can be broadened into 15+ milers with a LOT of elevation gain.
Justin Bayola yeah if you attempt from the north that would be an huge day.
Just discovered your channel, and my husband and I are obsessed already! We are casual hikers that just started to dabble in backpacking. But your videos are definitely inspiring for some Type 1 funN
oh man same here!
High peaks matter! I did Mt Elbert last September and it was amazing!! Great job!
Thanks for staying active 🙏🏻 love this channel
I've been binging this channel as training for an upcoming adventure, instead of actual training
2 hours to summit Elbert? That's impressive. Took me longer to summit Quandary which is a much easier 14er.
htownallday281 took us 4 hours today @ Quandary
@@ScarcityOsrs That's right around how long it took me. Only 14er that I've done in less than 4 hours is Evans via summit lake.
@@ScarcityOsrs took me 2 hours
these guys deserve a tv show or at least a Netflix original!
Mt Elbert was my first. You never forget your first.
I did that hike, but on the other trail, just last week! Nice video!
I love your video style. Great job and a lot of work.
Great video! Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures. Keep enjoying the mountains and your family!
First time watching a video of yours! Thanks for recording your journey, good stuff man. I’m living here in CO, been wanting to climb some 14ers for a while
You guys should try climbing mt.Shasta in northern California. It's the second highest peak in the Cascades after mt.Rainier and the fifth highest peak in the state at 14,179 feet
Evan Donovan why
@@jackson.denzler. probably because it's beautiful hike...
Hell yeah brother . I've been to the top before . Can't wait to get back to Leadville .
I had just done Mt Elbert yesterday it took me 10 and a half hours round trip
It was probably the hardest thing I’ve done in my life so far ( this is coming from someone in KC that doesn’t have a lot of time to train on mountains)
I picked up my 22nd highpoint
Good job! I did Elbert last year with some buddies. They are from KC area too. In a couple weeks we’ll tackle NM high point.
@@Mdogbrown I’ll be doing nm highpoint this august it should be my 27th highpoint
On the same trip I’ll climb Humphrey peak az it should be highpoint 26
@@troutonland26 That’s awesome! Are you hitting OK high point on the way?
@@Mdogbrown I was there 2 years ago it was cool would love to go back. It was highpoint number 19 for me and my father
However AZ NM highpoint is the priority
After 2 mountains within 2-5 days from each other
We might say let’s go home
Or we might go the Great sand dunes National park and preserve
@@troutonland26 You guys are beasts!
Great Sand Dunes is awesome. I took the family there and the kids sledded down the dunes most of the day. We stayed in a cabin nearby. Someday I want to do Blanca peak right next to it. That looks like an awesome hike.
That Mullet needs a Mustache. :)
D C true
Great footage as usual Danny. I ended up going for that BD pack after seeing it in your last video. Really liking it. Would you mind doing a short video about the gear you take up on these short/medium length adventures? Thanks for posting and keeping us motivated, I end up doing a lot of solo stuff myself due to lack of partners, keep sending it!
got the same BD pack last week. love the hybrid. took it up mt. evans. like a glove. great channel. EDIT: also, 4k vert in 2hrs? dayam son. us hikers hate u runners!! hahaha. I bet you're the guy that lapped me on Torrey's last month!?
I climbed this mountain a few years back. It was a pretty easy climb other than the lack of oxygen. I flew in from Florida the night before and hiked this first thing in the morning. I hiked another mountain a bit shorter two days later and the oxygen was no longer an issue. It is amazing how fast your body gets acclimatized to oxygen levels. I am sure at much higher altitudes it would make much difference. For one thing I give it to him for setting up camera's to show him running down then to have go back up to retrieve them. I would never do that. I subscribed to there channel. Looks like a great bunch of guys that really enjoy what they are doing. I wish I had more friends like them.
Great video, I also did it 3 days after you on a different route, so I can now show it to my kids, thanks! Some drone footage would have been nice.
Amazing hike & summit!
You kids are proud of you my dad's a mountainteer.does it well 👍😁
I was literally in the same place as you on Father’s Day. I caught some trout in Turquoise lake
I hike mont Elbert 2 weeks ago and was to much snow take me 9 hrs was so cold and windy but so beautiful
I'll have to add this mountain to my bucket list!
Nice climb. Fast time. Neat edit. Thanks.
Love the channel. Any thought of ever doing the full Teton Crest Trail?
Skills! Well done.
Another great video! Thanks again!
Me and my buddies climbed Mt Greenhorn and the West Spanish Peak about 3 weeks ago. A week ago me and them decided "hey we can do Greenhorn and WSP" why not Elbert? We started at Black Cloud Trailhead. About 2 miles in, we realized we severely underestimated that bastard. It's not for beginners. Fortunately for our bodies, and unfortunately for our egos, a misforecasted lightning storm drove us back down the trail when we were .2 miles from the tree line. We were so beat, every 500 ft we climbed we had to stop. We're trying again the first weekend in August. During the Summer, it is such a lush trail. Every Coloradan needs to climb Elbert. It's not the most exciting, but it is the highest point in the mainland US
great video I done Elbert a couple times beautiful trail
Go into the Grenadines ( in the San Juan's). Long to get into where they start .
Loved the window shopping!
beautiful window shopping thanks!!
You should try Humphrey’s in Arizona. Super easy hike but the views! Since the mountains in Flagstaff are volcanic and localized you really get a “top of the world” feeling up there.
Teaching with Power I second this!
Worth the acent you think 🤔 beautiful .
Keeping your wife happy is almost as important as staying in shape lol I like that.
cool vid. I do the same stuff. and cool touch on the " happy wife and staying in shape" thing. thanks.
Leadville is awesome.got sick as hell at the false peak hiking Elbert, I was probably only 11 at the time. Took us probably 8-9 hours round trip lol and I didnt even summit :( Did Mt Massive the year before but we were not prepared. that was a much longer trail from what I remember.
2 hours 10 minutes with all the camera work is impressive as hell, It must have taken me close to 6 hours in mid may snow
2:10 while filming, and with snow, is nuts.
I need to move to Colorado! And get myself a Hero 7.
No Vacancy 😂
What footwear are you using and what date did you do this hike?
You've done the tallest peaks in California, New Mexico, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Colorado, Nevada. All you need now is gannett peak in wyoming, mt rainier in Washington, and Arizona's tallest peak.
Adrien Regelbrugge Denali!
@@ashtonwhitcomb3217 and mauna kea
Probably ought to mention Utah too
@@kennethestes1828 has he done utahs tallest
Then it’s off to Alaska!
How high up is the starting point? I feel like 2H15min is fast for 4000meters..
Hey I’m here right now lol I’m trying to drive up to the lily ponds or closer to start at the bridge small river crossing how do I get there lol
The most accurate measurement of the summit elevation is 14,440 ft. The 14,433 is from a 1928 measurement, while the 14,440 is from a 1988 measurement. There will be a new measurement in 2022 using GPS, if I remember correctley.
This looks fun
Come to NH and do the Presidential Traverse in the White Mountains. I know its not as big as stuff in the west but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I'd love to see you tackle the Sneffel's Range in the future! Keep on crushing the peaks brother
Hey, that was awesome. If you ever get the chance, you should climb Pikes Peak. Amazing hike and great food in Manitou!
Chase Clibon you bet. It’s a fun peak to do and manitou is definitely amazing!
I've climbed this one, but you guys made it look easy.
it was only 1 guy doing it lol
Still waiting for you guys to do Rainier. You're sure not gonna do that in 3:38 and I don't think you'll be using your skis a lot either unless you take the tourist route.
You’ve summited Mt Elbert In 2 hours ? Omg you are a star ! What’s your fitness mantra ?
We did Mount Mitchell hike last weekend (highest point east of Mississippi). Anyone do both Elbert and Mitchell? How did they compare for you?
Great video. On which mountain is the highest peak in NM? So much snow in CO this year right? I though climbing Mt. Democrat would be cold because... well... snow... Turns out that the weather was warm so no need for extra layers.
Did you wear clamp-ons for this?
This looks like an easy hike with minimal snow .. I faced the worst weather with thunderstorm. We had to turn back at 13500ft ..
My friends and I tried Elbert a couple months ago, there was way to much snow we couldn't get far. Plus there were mountain lion tracks
Lol thats why you bring a gun or bear mace
Thanks for the video? Is it easy to hike in terms are there any boulders to climb and do you need any gear (picks etc)? Is there need to get used to the elevation first for a day?
Like he said, the toughest thing is probably the distance. If you do it in July or August, you shouldn't need any gear (other than trekking poles if you use them). It's probably ideal to try to get used to elevation, but I spent one night in Leadville prior to hiking Elbert, so it's not necessary. Def worth it for the views!
"I don't know why the highest peak patters, but somehow it does."
Seriously.. Why does it matter? And why can't I convince myself that it doesn't..
I wasted a good amount of a week in Colorado driving all over the place to get to some higher hikes instead of spending that time on trails that would have been just as good if not better.
All that said.. I want every highest peak..
Are those the Arc’teryx Norvan VT you are wearing? Are they any good, would you recommend them? Thanks
Do you have a list of recommended equipment (i.e. shoes, backpacks, ice axes, campons, etc) for speed and lightweight trecking somewhere?
Looks like he is wearing Saucony Trail Runners. They're rated as one of the best.
What kinda shoes are those your wearing
Nice hike how many miles did you do
What’s the name of the intro song!?
14,440 I think. They remeasured it not too long ago via Geo Survey. Just did this 2 weeks ago, love the videos!
Beast af bro. Really good time.
For time constraints... if there were short skis that could be separated in two halves with a slip joint that locks them into a solid ski. This would be a ski that works in other than extreme ski conditions.
I think the disagreement in height is partially to do with using different geoids. I see that for a lot of peaks actually, no one can agree on the exact height.
Try cloud peak if you can find it the most beautiful...
What shoes do you wear?
Sweetness 👌🏻👍🏻
Hey man can you plz tell us the route you took?
Across from Elbert is Massive and you can do the length of it all above 14
Cool upload
I’m not sure why more people haven’t subscribed to watch your adventures...
Dam you flashed up that mountain.
I did Elbert a few days ago and it took us 9 hours round trip
what brand are the pants that you have on?
awesome!!!!
Squatch sighting at 1:49. Careful out there.
Are you doing the 50 state high points? Come east and check out the Adirondacks!
impressive - ty
What camera equipment do you use?
2 hours?
How much backtracking do you do to capture all those images...imagine how much faster you'd be if it wasn't for your postings on RUclips... your buddies can't keep up with with the photography, much less if you were only focused on making time.
What trail u take
I like driving to the summit of Pikes Peak
you are great.
Was this filmed in 2018?
Could you plz do mt evens in Colorado
when did you climb this
Fathers day
Sweet! Iam doin this one in two weeks!
