A friend's grandson brought fleas into the house. We fogged several times, washed everything including the cats. What finally worked for us was a tin pan with water and a few drops of dawn and a night light. They jump in and drown. Man they were full in the morning. We set these traps up in every room for weeks. I think the flowers you are referring to are marigolds. I use them for garden pests 😉
@@gr3atestthink3r86 like a bowl full of water with some dish soap added. then you have a lamp next to the bowl and this is because fleas are attracted to heat and will come to that location where hopefully they will jump into the bowl full of dish soap water and drown. The soap breaks the water tension so that the fleas drown. However, this will only catch some fleas emerging from their pupa stage and happen to jump in the pan. The rest of the home still has plenty of larvae ready to emerge into fleas and find your pets and you.
So I have 5 cats, 2 of them are outdoor cats and the other 3 are indoor cats. The one outdoor cat brought fleas into the home and infected all of the other cats. The advantage flea topical medicine is pretty expensive when you have multiple cats. I found that dawn dish soap and warm water and a flea comb every day for a couple of weeks got all of my cats mostly free from fleas. I've just been given Bravecto by my vet because the Advocate they used to prescribe seemed to stop working. I read that reactions are rare, but now I'm worried. :/
@@alisonlekarev2183 you might want to look into Revolution. From what I understand the reactions are far less severe. Bravecto enters tissue fluids (i take that as the blood stream). Bravecto caused my cat to have a HORRIBLE reaction. Can't believe they are still recommending this toxic treatment. Do your research people. The only one that wins here is the Vet's bank account.
I have helped several cats through the years, I would take them the vet and get them fix, deworm and deflea but know with everything getting so expensive even the vet has gone up, now is 95 bucks just to see the vet so he can say whether the cat is healthy or not to receive the prescription flea meds and the good meds are so expensive that I can only afford one dosage for one cat. The over-the-counter stuff is a hit and miss situation but one thing I have notice is that it used to work most of the time but now it doesn't work most of the time. Totally lost here, the only thing I found that helps to control the fleas is vacuuming twice a week, bathing the cats, washing their bedding once a week and spending 20-30 minutes combing the fleas off and drowning them in alcohol. No, this does not get rid of all fleas, but it helps to keep it from getting out of control. Yes, is not the best but when you truly can't afford the vets you just got to do the best you can for the little ones.
I want answers to these questions: 1. How long will eggs stay viable in an uninhabited room that is sprayed but as our house is several hundred years old (and suffering first infestation since 1986 when we moved in) there are way too many nooks a crannies to spray 100% of eggs so... 2. What is the most effective trap? A vibrating bowl of gooey fermenting liquid kept at 30°c or will sticky fly papers be fine? 3. Are there biological control mechanisms I can employ? I have been careful not to hoover up spiders but I have noticed that since I started spraying flea killer spray the spiders have vanished while the flea population seems barely diminished. 4. our grouchy old (19½ yrs) cat won't stand for being shampooed and even gets vicious if I go anywhere near her weeping sores. Is there something I can spray on my cat that is either safe if it gets licked or is safe after a short time (during which I guess we could attach the collar of shame)? Also hydrocortisone? Bad for cat? Vet prescribed but can't help but worry about cat licking that stuff up. 5. Are there hormone/ other biological compounds that will attract fleas to a trap/ make fleas sterile/ make fleas gay and therefore prevent procreation?
Very, very late reply! Apologies! I hope your flea infestation (if you are dealing with it) has improved. 1 - Flea eggs and cocoons can stay viable for 6 months up to a year if the spray solution does not reach them. They last a long, long time, unfortunately. 2 - I have found that many traps are not viable whatsoever for controlling infestations. It is just a way to measure the status of your infestation and catch rogues. Any trap with a light/heat source is usually effective to catch some fleas. 3 - Biological control mechanisms do exist, but usually not for inside the home (nematodes and ladybugs are effective in gardens & the yard for example). House spiders will eat adults but it is usually unlikely that they are nested in the same area that your flea infestation is, and even more unlikely that they will ever find & eat the eggs or larvae. 4 - There aren't very many things that you can put on a fitsy cat that won't agitate them. Many would say essential oils or some type of other diluted mixture (i.e. vinegar or something) but some are not safe for cats and all require spraying into the coat. Hydrocortisone is alright for cats, just make sure they don't consume any. 5 - Lmao! Can't make fleas gay unfortunately, basically nothing stops them from wanting to breed except for IGRs and medication that kills before they can lay eggs. Fleas are attracted to light & carbon dioxide, so many flea traps utilize one or both (night light, or utilizing a plant to attract them).
I used 3 dehumidifiers strategically placed and kept the humidity around 45. In a few days no more fleas. I store away the dehumidifies till next time. Expensive but effective.
Great video with lots of good info. I see the video is a couple of years old, so I'd like to add that although Bravecto worked great for my cats for several years, early this year when fleas reappeared (2024), I used Bravecto as usual and it was very ineffective in killing fleas. I would say it worked for a week or so, then stopped working at all. To make matters worse, because Bravecto is a three-month medicine, I couldn't use anything else on the cats until that three months was up. Here in California, fleas come and go. My indoor cats might not have fleas for a year or two, then all of a sudden the fleas appear. I believe a flea or two hitched a ride on my cats when we were at the vet's one time. Probably a girl flea and a boy flea. They came home with my cats and fell in love and a bunch of new fleas soon appeared!
I agree with one of the comments, about using borax. I have used borax, 4 or 5 boxes so far. I spread it threwout my house on wooden floors. I left it down for 5 days then vacummed it up. Lots of vacumming, i also mopped with pinesol to get rid of fleas.

I found a video about a month ago that recommended coconut oil. I have an elderly cat that was in such bad shape from fleas that I tried it immediately. She wasn’t happy w/process, but it worked! She slept easily that night. Became a lap cat, although only briefly, & let me pet & hold her to help groom & comfort. I’ve read & watched a lot of videos recently & don’t ever want to go through this again. They’d have to drink all the water. Best bet, get something really fishy and stinky and tasty. I crush a bit of sardine maybe a teaspoon and my cats will eat it. I have one that if you put a little liver sausage (Braunschweiger) they will eat a pill.
We have had cats for many yrs, right now we have 8, that's a bit many I know but people have dropped kittens here in middle of night as we live in a mostly secluded place, we fall in love with them. For yrs we have used Advantage Multi for cats over 10 lbs and has worked real well until now as they now have a flea outbreak. Our cats are safely able to go outside during the day (they love it) but we make sure they come in at sunset. We have also used Frontline with good results which covers only topical parasites such as fleas and ticks but its good. This sudden flea outbreak has us searching for answers as what has worked for yrs is not working now.
It’s according to weight I think. My dr weighed my cat then I had to run home and bring the other cat in to get weighed for the flea treatment as well. I didn’t even know my cat had fleas until I noticed speckled blood in the tub and brought her in
Does Frontline Plus work good? We just moved beds out of our bedroom and had dog in the house for a while yesterday. I bought the Kroger brand with same ingredients and that was all they had. I literally saw a few crawling off of our cat. She’s acting a little weird but eating and drinking so that’s good. What makes fleas hard to eliminate is that they stay in the egg until something comes by for them to jump onto. So just spraying won't cut it. What you want to do is spray for fleas and then activate the larva. One way to do this is to spray and then use roombas. They will hatch, jump to the roomba, jump off and land in the poison. Or you could walk all around yourself to hatch them. Hope this helps.
