I started raw feeding my golden at a year old.she is 13 1/2 . Hasn't had fleas for over 10 years. I Don't use any flea prevention. She has nice soft skin & that isn't what fleas are looking for. I have been using it for years. The caution is to make sure it is the food/horticulture grade not the pool grade. The pool grade is highly toxic and used in pool filters.

I use on my cats been 1.5 years. It's organic food grade. When an out break happens I use a small amount sometimes daily. The one cat licks it off it can be immediately. I have put in the carpet. I think the flea liquids are really bad. This stuff does work! I am using the CBD oil from you keeps the coat shiny.
Really love watching your vids, Dr. Jones! Always something interesting and helpful! As a rescue mom for cats, you've saved me so much money! I can't thank you enough! THANKS for thinking of the pets FIRST and the $ as a 'bonus' to your job! Also; I'm so tired of the toxic products and foods that are being marketed for our fur babies these days! Thank goodness you have much better recommendations and products!! THANK YOU!
You are amazing. Every issue that our Lhasa Apso has you have covered. I am a natural health provider for humans and your recommend things that I have in my house and that I recommend to my patients. Thank you 💝
I have been using DE on the dogs since one of your previous videos and it works a treat. Tula is lovely! Thanks Dr Jones, you’re a great vet and a nice guy!👍
This video came just at the right time. I had just been thinking of searching your channel for natural flea control products. You must have sensed it! :-)
Another super video! I've been using it for years on my furbabies as a flea treatment and on their food to fight off parasite infections. Also great to use on the veggie patch at this time of the year. Thank you.
The key words here are "food grade" DE. The swimming pool stuff is what can really tear up your sinuses, eyes and lungs. I'm assuming the pool filter kind is ground less fine but from experience it is pretty finely ground!
The best flea control or elimination, in my case at least, is coconut laundry soap bars. Here in Brazil it's very easy to find. It kills all the fleas on the animal! Believe me. It does. The vacuum cleaner is your best ally in your fight against flea eggs. They hide in rugs, carpets, in the blankets/beds your pets sleep on, and if you have wooden floors keep an eye open for gaps between the planks of wood. There are products you could use on the floor. Fun (maybe not that fun) fact: flea eggs can live for over a year as eggs. I got rid of the rugs and my pet's beds and blankets. I have a cat. They sleep anywhere. Your bed, couches, chairs, boxes... I, personally, don't like carpets or rugs. So I never put them back. If you do, maybe have them professionally cleaned.
Yes, I got a kick out of your "not so fun-fact"! Been there - I actually was going over all of the piping on our couch to make sure there were no eggs anywhere; had to buy special hand held vacuums for some of the places that had to be cleaned. So glad that is over. Another thing you can do as far as bedding or, in our case, cloth toys that our one cat was really attached to: If it's small enough to go in a plastic bag and then in the freezer, put it in there, for like 2 weeks or so then launder them when they come out of the deep freeze. I am not sure if that will get the eggs (I think it does) but it gets them at every other stage. You know, if the eggs are laying around somewhere and someone walks past, the vibration of their steps can actually trigger the flea to break out of the shell, and then you have one jumping around till it gets on the cat. I think someone said very hot temperatures kills them in the egg stages, so sometimes we would put the heat on (this was in July/August/Sept for us) and keep it on for several hours at a time, along with a woodstove fire to heat up the house and kill any eggs I didn't get with the vacuum or with hand mopping the floor. What a nightmare. I agree with you about carpets - don't have any wall-to-wall ones, but I do have an area rug in two rooms. Does this coconut laundry soap have a name? Is it Zote?
I used it for awhile on my dog and her coat became super dry. She started scratching more from the dry skin than any fleas. So use caution. It is not for my dog. I make homemade flea repellent with lemons and apple cider vinegar. Good for the coat and effective at repelling fleas.
I did not find it to be effective as well as drying out their skin. I wish it did! I hate the toxic chemical drugs. I bought food grade from two different suppliers thinking that maybe I received something that was substandard from the first supplier. I read as soon as you get it wet it doesn't work so I made sure to spread it around the house and didn't wash the floors for 3 days, leaving the powder there, dry. Still, last year I ended up having to buy the pills because they really were suffering with the fleas. I hated having to give them those pills!
@@blaze3884 Frequent vacuuming is the best thing to prevent fleas as well as washing their bedding at least once per week. People should be worried about the next generation of fleas instead of the ones on their dog. I make my own repellent with lemons and apple cider vinegar. Works great.
@Mama Bear You can mix up a flea powder with DE that is easier on their skin. 1 part neem powder, 1 part yarrow powder, 2 parts DE. Neem helps run off the fleas, and the yarrow powder is soothing to the skin. For dogs--but never for cats--you can add a few drops of eucalyptus oil.
@@Floppycats Slice lemons thinly with skin on, cover with water and boil for about ten minutes. Add a bit of rosemary. Let it cool and strain it. You can use it like this. I just put some on my fingers and then rub into the fur. You can also mix with a bit of apple cider vinegar.
I love the way you so patiently explain in detail what we need to know....Thank You. Dr Jones; could you help with hot spots... my dog is chewing himself (and me ) crazy and I can't figure out what is causing it; I can't find anything on him; I comb him out everyday, and I make a natural tonic of cedar, olive, ginko, cammomille, alittle home made acv, and coconut oil weekly, and (we call it "spa night") and give him a sponge bath with it, as he hates getting wet; I works great for a while, and then he's right back at it... He just started chewing on himself a few weeks ago... He is a puppy mill victim, and he has a few issues; and I'm wondering if this isn't an emotional nervous thing. How do I stop it; and is there any natural product; herb that might help? I've had a few dogs; and have never had this problem before; it's perplexing to say the least, and I'm worried that he will cause secondary infections.
I use Diatomaceous Earth on all my animals. Including my chickens, Ducks and Geese! Their dust bath. I clean my chicken house and sprinkle it everywhere, especially in the nesting boxes. I put DE in with the chicken's feed too. I also put it in my cat's food and dog's food. It works on carpets too, leave it on for 24 hours, then vacuum.

I have used this in my home and it worked great. However I have asthma and had an attack when cleaning it up. If you have breathing problems I would suggest not disturbing it and having someone else clean it up.
@@selinaoakley3613 Great advice. This stuff is very fine and becomes airborne easily and clings to clothing and hair etc. A mask may help but for anyone extremely asthmatic I would still suggest having someone else clean up.

Any recommendations for use on cats...application, how to "bathe" after 24 hours & keep skin hydrated? Also, any concern of it dehydrating my cat internally...he has CKD, so I want to be careful. Thanks!
I bought a huge bag of it years ago from store where you buy feed for livestock, I sprinkled on yard and against house and never had a roach, ant, spider enter my house.
Margie Provencio I have roach baits everywhere but I still see small cockroach baby entering my house so I bought DE hopefully will prevent it thanks 😊
If you're using this topically purely for preventative measures, how often should you apply directly to their coat and how long after or how frequently after application should be they be bathed?
I've use DE but never taken dog a bath after 24hrs... then I apply it again in a week or 2... I even dust outside where she goes potty... thank You Dr. Hope I receive a reply.. thank You so much You are such a Blessing 💞

I’m from USA and never heard of that product. Is it the same as baking soda because that’s what are you say sprinkle it all over the carpet for the same reason sometimes I put a drop or two of essential oils in there and then it becomes a nice fragrant lavender or whatever you want.
You probably won’t ever get to read this. However. I am wanting to know how to prevent fleas. Not waiting until my dog gets them. Hopefully using this earth product will prevent. Thanks for this wonderful information.

I use plain regular table salt , fleas eat the salt - they swell up and pop & i spread it in my carpets too - then vacuum the floors up. And their all gone .
@@kristenmarie9248 When I have used the salt in the house or where ever needed it to be spread around ( the effected part of the home* ) I sometimes shake a little lightly on the coat - thus for ANY remaining fleas/ticks to eat the salt and it will get rid of them - & some pets have rather thick fur - so a light dash of it from neck to tail an a gentle rub down their back letting it flow thru the fur helps those grains filter thru the fur and the bugs go after it - but do* comb thru the fur later in the day and give them a good lathered washing the following day so the salt doesn't irritate the skin. Works very wonderful on my pets. I Generally shake a container of table salt in the carpets or on furniture in the house I know the pet has laid on this attracts the bugs to the salt they eat it swell up & pop & die off - then you use the vaccum and clear out the remaining salt an dead pests.

I have many rescues and I've been sprinkling nutritional yeast on their food. It seems to work for some but not all. Is this safe to use on kittens since they get licked quite a bit by their mama's?
Scrolling through the comments to see if anyone uses it also for ticks on dogs. Arachnids have an exoskeleton made of chiton same as insects (all within the phylum arthropoda). I just don't want to assume DE works for ticks as I live in Australia in an area with the deadly paralysis tick (Ixodes holocylus) is prevalent and can kill dogs fast. I have had a few scares with my dogs over the past 25 years.
Only apply it once a week?! I did it. But my guy continues to have flea dirt. I haven’t seen live fleas, but not dead ones either. I was thinking of redoing it, but it’s only been a few days. I can’t bathe my cat - he shakes for like 3 hours afterwards.

I do this on my dogs and use on my chickens as well. My only complaint is when they decide to shake right next to you it does create the dust cloud. I definitely recommend over those harmful drops for sure. Thanks again friend!!!
I absolutely love Diatomaceous Earth. It cures a lot of ails for my pets. And, it is so much cheaper than those other flea remedies.
@sheri4673 I also use it as a deformed for my 🐈 and chicken 🐔. I add a small amount to their food periodically.
When I first heard about DE, I was scared to try it. But I'm glad I did.
We place some of it in our rug deodorizer and let it sit before vacuuming. We've been using it over 20 years on our dogs. We get ours at the Tractor Supply Company or any local farm and tractor.
I've been using this for years!! Haven't seen a flea since!!(:
That's great!
Can u help me understand how to use on cats? Also for worms how to give in for thank u
How often do you apply it? I have two cats with fleas.
@@Floppycats about once a week or so . I usually do it outside and put the powder in one of those new mustard or ketchup bottles and squirt it on them and fluff it around.
And make sure it is food grade
My dog had fleas for the first year or 2 of her life. I used DE as well as trifexus from vet. I started researching & found out about raw fed dogs. I started raw feeding my golden at a year old.she is 13 1/2 . Hasn't had fleas for over 10 years. I Don't use any flea prevention. She has nice soft skin & that isn't what fleas are looking for.
Thank you Dr for your ❤ for dogs
Tula so wants to please you! She's adorable!
I also helps get grease off of them. Must be food grade. I believe it’s made from fossilized plankton. It’s also used if it’s mfood grade as a dewormer. I use it on my veggie plants all the time. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️🐾❤️🐾🐾🐾🐾💪🏻🖖🏻
Thank you Dr Jones. I am so holistic with my family and our fur family. You are awesome. Answer to my prayers. 🥰🥰
Yes! I love diatomaceous earth! I use it for fleas on our 2 dogs and 2 cats. It's helped eliminate fleas successfully a number of times.
How often did it d you apply it?
I have been using it for years. The caution is to make sure it is the food/horticulture grade not the pool grade. The pool grade is highly toxic and used in pool filters.
🌼 I occasionally treat my yard with it too. It seems to help a lot! I also diffuse cedarwood and lemongrass.
Yeah my dogs don’t enjoy taking a bath either they want to get out. It is the best time then they’re very happy and excited. Thanks for the video. I really appreciate it. I’m sure we all do. God bless you for being a good honest veterinarian that really wants to help.🥰❤️
Tula says "Thanks for not poisoning me."
👍
My kitty is a sweetie until I try to give her a bath nope nope nope
Not likely to ever breathe this stuff in, because it is very sticky to surfaces, and has dense qualities. Thank you very good video, I am doing this.
THANK YOU!
I'm so happy to hear my videos are helpful, thank you:)
How often do you apply it?
Sending hugs and Gratitude from Nova Scotia. Juno (our itchy Chow/Shar Pei rescue) has a much better life because of you!.
That's great to hear.
This video came just at the right time. I had just been thinking of searching your channel for natural flea control products. You must have sensed it! :-)
Glad it was helpful!
@@VeterinarySecrets how do you grade coconut oil as topical pest control method doctor?
@@MantisShrimp80 fleas hate it, don't hesitate to use it.
Another super video! I've been using it for years on my furbabies as a flea treatment and on their food to fight off parasite infections. Also great to use on the veggie patch at this time of the year. Thank you.
I discovered this last year!! It made me avoid chemicals and fleas in the house.
Terre de diatomée in french.
The key words here are "food grade" DE. The swimming pool stuff is what can really tear up your sinuses, eyes and lungs. I'm assuming the pool filter kind is ground less fine but from experience it is pretty finely ground!
Thanks, Dr. Jones. Tula looks great. As always we appreciate your knowledge, your heart for the Practice of Medicine applied to animals. Keep Well.
My pleasure
Thanks for that info!
Is it Zote?
@@Terrie23JTN 👍
Love the natural remedies over the insecticides. Thank you for this video. Its great.
Glad you liked it.
@@VeterinarySecrets I currently don't have DE , do u recommend apple cider vinegar ?
Thanks Doc.😊👍🏻
Hope you all are doing well in BC.
Have a wonderful summer❤️🌹
@@mamabear9389 can you offer your recipe, please?
Tula is so precious ❤️
What about tick prevention will it be effective for any insect infestation?
I use Diatomaceous Earth on all my animals. Including my chickens, Ducks and Geese! Their dust bath. I clean my chicken house and sprinkle it everywhere, especially in the nesting boxes. I put DE in with the chicken's feed too. I also put it in my cat's food and dog's food. It works on carpets too, leave it on for 24 hours, then vacuum.
Hi i already knew about it but few of my doubts been cleared in this video....thanks a lot...
Love from India....Very first time to ur channel and nice knowing u and ur channel, just subscribed
thank you!
I have used this in my home and it worked great. However I have asthma and had an attack when cleaning it up. If you have breathing problems I would suggest not disturbing it and having someone else clean it up.
Pop a mask on dear, will help loads with your breathing.
@@selinaoakley3613 Great advice. This stuff is very fine and becomes airborne easily and clings to clothing and hair etc. A mask may help but for anyone extremely asthmatic I would still suggest having someone else clean up.
Never would have thought of this one...thank you
Thank you.
My dog is licking her paws and I was thinking it is allergies, but just now I saw a flea on my hand after petting her, yikes! I am not sure if that there is a connection, but no matter what I have to treat her against fleas. Thank you so much for this video! I happen to have D.E. in my house, I use it for many things and I love that it is natural. You are the best! I can start immediately now to de-flea the house.
Oh no! It could be both too but yes, get rid of the fleas for now and see if things improve.
Once you stop seeing fleas. How many days should you continue using the diatomaceous earth for?
Any recommendations for use on cats...application, how to "bathe" after 24 hours & keep skin hydrated? Also, any concern of it dehydrating my cat internally...he has CKD, so I want to be careful. Thanks!
Good girl Tula!🐕
I bought a huge bag of it years ago from store where you buy feed for livestock, I sprinkled on yard and against house and never had a roach, ant, spider enter my house.
Margie Provencio I have roach baits everywhere but I still see small cockroach baby entering my house so I bought DE hopefully will prevent it thanks 😊
Does this also work for ticks?
Hi doc! So glad I found you :) question is it ok to add a bit in your pets water? Will that help in any way? Or not recommended? Thank you in advance
I would like to know if this is also effective against ticks... fleas don't seem to be a problem here in Philippines but ticks are so prevalent..
I haven't found this has worked at all. this year has been a terrible terrible year for fleas in my dogs
Thank so much Dr Jones, I will get it , my 3 paw -girls and me will be confident and safe from those fleas...have a good weekend....Blessings
Thank you for watching! You too!
Yes, I like to see the video on how much to give them for worming them
Can I use this on my cat and not give her a bath afterwards? Thanks for the video - Tula is adorable!
Hello Dr Jones brilliant I always want to learn more of natural way. Thank you for debunking this topic Great 👍🏻 vid and advice too Keep safe too Dr Jones 🥰👍🏻
Him: “I use this fine white powder”
Me: “ah, I see you’re a man of culture as well”

I’m from USA and never heard of that product. Is it the same as baking soda because that’s what are you say sprinkle it all over the carpet for the same reason sometimes I put a drop or two of essential oils in there and then it becomes a nice fragrant lavender or whatever you want.
Tula so stinkin cute! Commin up on a half a mill subbies doc! Woohoo! 👍😋
Yes, we're on our road to 500k! Please keep sharing so we'll reach more people. ;-) Thanks for watching!
You probably won’t ever get to read this. However. I am wanting to know how to prevent fleas. Not waiting until my dog gets them. Hopefully using this earth product will prevent. Thanks for this wonderful information.

Can you please advise whether I should apply to face and if so how? Btw, I love your videos!!!!
My dog is eating grass alot...what medicine or supplement to give? He is 3 years old and he has been dewormed recently.

Does this prevent HEARTWORM infection, or do you still have to treat once monthly to prevent heart worms?
I also use this orally mixed with water for the dogs diarrhea & it works great! Also used one time as a face mask. I use a food grade one if you want info.
Thanks for sharing :)
I use plain regular table salt , fleas eat the salt - they swell up and pop & i spread it in my carpets too - then vacuum the floors up. And their all gone .
That's good to know, thank you.
Do you put the salt on your pets?
I don’t think n this is a good idea, because the pets will want to lick the floor, and could end up eating dead fleas.
Que cachorro mais educado,calmo lindíssimo,❤
Love your website & when I get another dog I'm going with the Diatomaceous Earth you recommended
Thanks much Dr. Andrewz
Sorry got you name wrong, Dr. Jones & thanks for the link for the Diatomaceous Earth you use
Firstly I would like to say i appreciate you, I have a question one of my cats is 20 years old, and in early stages of renal failure, would this still be safe?? Thanks
Kills ringworm too. With 1 or 2 wks application
Thank you for relieving me of the stress of naughty chemicals!!!

We really thank you very much for your advice on dogs and cats i have dogs and so far everything works great. God Bless You.
Have always watched your Videos and they are very helpful. Have used Diasematios Earth for a few years now buy it by the sackful on Amazon not to be confused with the stuff they use for swimming pools this is for Humans I use it on my Chickens and they have never had mites etc on them or bedding and Ants hate it I sprinkle it around the house where there are Ants and Have used it on my Golden Retriever Dog Gemma who is no longer with me she died this year age 14 years and you have always been there when I needed advice for her and your advice was always helpful so I thank you for that You are a great vet and it shows Rosemary from the UK
Thank you, that's great to hear.
Found the diatomaceous earth in a white plastic bottle in the insect repellant section at hardware store, is that food grade?? Would that be safe?
You are such a loving awesome vet. Thank you!
Thank you!
That is my choice in my garden and a great deterrent Thank you very much!
I have a lg bag of this. My dog always throws up the flea pill. I’m doing this today.
I have many rescues and I've been sprinkling nutritional yeast on their food. It seems to work for some but not all. Is this safe to use on kittens since they get licked quite a bit by their mama's?
So fish oils is safe for cats if your worried about irritation from the powder since it dries, add fish oil to food to moisturize
Can buy a puffer to apply the powder to pet and also to spray around home to kill fleas and ticks in the home
Yes
Only apply it once a week?! I did it. But my guy continues to have flea dirt. I haven’t seen live fleas, but not dead ones either. I was thinking of redoing it, but it’s only been a few days. I can’t bathe my cat - he shakes for like 3 hours afterwards.
Tula is such an angel🐶...she’s ssssso good & lovable💞🧸🙈 as always, Thank-You Dr. Jones for an awesome home remedy for those annoying fleas!
