Landscape Flower Bed Makeover Start To Finish

  • This area has been an eye sore ever since I completed the walkway. I decided to do a little makeover and make this area a nice flower bed. I started off by removing all the old dirt and weeds. I did this by taking a flat shovel and just skimming the area to the depth that I wanted. Then I spaced out the shrubs by eyeballing and then started to get them planted. Once I got all 5 boxwood gems planted I then installed the landscape fabric. I usually do this part before I plant but decided to do it the other way this time. I didn't have any landscape pins at my house so I just used the mulch to keep it down. I'm not a big fan of landscape fabric anyway but I some in the shop so decided to use it.

No pins because I didn't have any and didn't want to go back to the store. This small of a bed it's just not necessary as the mulch will hold it down. 🤷‍♂️👊

I can see why people get frustrated putting there work on youtube. A bunch of people without the courage to do so themselves feel the need to critique and judge what they are watching.
    Thanks for content Brian!

It's not criticising and judging. Yes the result looks nice but if there are all positive comments how would anybody learn? The viewers are just going to follow in his mistakes. The organic matter cannot get down into the soil to feed the soil microorganisms. If he removes the if he removes the weed killing membrane after a year or so it would have done its job and then he could just top up with organic matter yearly and have healthy soil and plants.

I've always laid my landscaping fabric down and secured it with landscaping staples, then cut X's where my plants were supposed to go and fold back the material. That way when my plant when in, I could tuck the fabric around the base and try to keep as many weeds out as possible.

Weed barrier fabric becomes a nightmare after a while. Weed seeds land on top and weeds grow anyways, and since their roots grow down into the fabric they become harder to remove

But really should a person cut a 6" strip and place it over each cut to prevent weeds forever?

Landscape fabric does not belong under mulch. The mulch breaks down and creates a organic layer on top of the fabric. Essentially making the fabric worthless. Long term a non fabric mulched bed is easier to maintain

    • @TopNotchLawns

Absolutely agree and was about to say the same thing. Guys around here do it all the time and your just wasting the customers money by putting it down under mulch. Use a good quality mulch and you will be good to go.

    • @eotherholder3598

Rubber mulch is better. Real mulch just breaks down and becomes a food source for pest. As a pest control guy I tell my customers all the time steer away from mulch and straw.

Waste of money on fabric. That mulch will decompose and just form another layer of dirt for weeds to grow on top of the fabric. I tell all my clients it's easier to maintain a fabric-less mulched bed long term. Was taught 20 years ago, no rock, no fabric.
