    Arborvitae are frequently planted WAY too close to homes because they look great when small. Some get 8 feet wide and 15 feet tall. So you want to be sure you pay attention to MATURE size when doing foundation plantings. Things look dinky when small plants are appropriately spaced. Within 5 years, you have a filled-in bed though. Photos of mine are funny-looked pretty sad, but now it is filled in and lovely. The Azaleas are an A+ choice-love what you did with them!

    Yes. I love using no gloves. I was here to learn how to avoid grass into my garden beds. I saw the way you cut into the grass at an angle. I thought border/bricks were necessary.

    • @BMSwisher
      @BMSwisher  Месяц назад

      @@teresaschmitt3441 a border of bricks, pavers, or small retaining wall blocks definitely last longer than a cut in edge like this. Doing this type of edge look nice and sharp, but you do have to redo it again each year when you mulch. After you get it cut in nice the first time, it's much easier to touch it up each year with the edging shovel or spade. It's a little cheaper this way but the hardscape way definitely lasts a lot longer!

    the arborvitae is way to close to the house. The roots are no invasive so it will not hurt the foundation, how ever if the doesn't get much sun the house will turn green from lask of sun ight. I think a lot of people plant too close to the foundation. You have lots of space. it's ok not to have plantings to close to the house.

  • @aprilshepard8662
    @aprilshepard8662 2 месяца назад +1

    What if my area looks like yours against the house but it’s mostly weeds? Can you just spray it and then cloth it and mulch? Do you have to get rid of it that way or can you just kill it off and then cover it up and then Mulching at is what I’m asking

    • @BMSwisher
      @BMSwisher  2 месяца назад

      Absolutely! Nothing wrong with doing that!!

    • @aprilshepard8662

      @@BMSwisher I made a trench around that area I kind of went too far up toward the house so I had to fill that in but I’m gonna work on that before I put the cloth I am gonna spray it today later today if we don’t get any more rain here. I did dig that little trench around the area and I think I got a little too deep so I’m gonna fill that in a little bit but that’ll keep the mulch off the grass and it’ll hopefully keep the weeds from coming over there. Do you think spraying that in the cloth and it will keep the weeds out for at least a season or maybe I guess depends on the weather here.

    • @BMSwisher
      @BMSwisher  2 месяца назад

      For sure! The cloth will last a good long while. It's just after a few years when the mulch breaks down on top, the weeds will grow on top of the fabric and sometimes even root into the fabric.

    • @aprilshepard8662
      @aprilshepard8662 2 месяца назад

      @@BMSwisher I have a retaining wall in the backyard because I wanna Terrace property and it’s about 4 1/2 feet wide almost 5 feet wide and I had that cloth and it’s the real thick stuff which I’m not using the same in this area but that Steph still there but there is weeds growing at times on top of the dirt from that. So they’re easier to get out but still have to deal with it. This one should last a while I think. Thanks for the information I really appreciate it

  • @cjmontague4344
    @cjmontague4344 Год назад

    Looks really good. Do you have any recommendations for weed control or grass creep? Or does the mulch cover and the deep edge you made across grass line keep it under control? I was thinking you had to lay a weed tarp down to prevent weeds.

    • @andreaberryman5354
      @andreaberryman5354 Год назад

      Regular till with a hoe works, but cats poop in loose material. So I am putting down plain felt-tough stuff. Buy whole spool of it. Weed fabric is flimsy. Then put decorative rocks, pine needles, branches and cones. It looks really nice!

    • @BMSwisher
      @BMSwisher  Год назад +2

      Weed tarp works for about 2 years. If you want to plant annuals its a super pain. After 2 years the roots of the weeds seem to grow super powers and penetrate the weed fabric. Pull weeds out that have rooted into the weed fabric from above it a nightmare. "Snapshot" or "Preen" helps to minimize weeds if you spread the granuals down before you mulch, a little $13 gallon of roundup spot-sprayed bi-weekley on non-windy/non-rainy days will make you a very happy person.
