    I put in 4 flower beds last year using cardboard. What I did was I planted all my plants in the ground first, then I cut the cardboard around the plants and topped the cardboard with mulch. I'm a widow living on Social Security so I was trying to do it the most cost effective way so I didn't need to put soil down. So far it looks like all my perennials are coming back this year.

      Yes, you can do that you totally can!! but if you want the raised bed look, you do have to add topsoil and mulch, I was married to Landscape contractor for 16 years lol I’ve learned quite a bit. But yes, actually the cardboard is better for the soil and it actually helps the earth worms and it completely is biodegradable so it’s actually better than using a landscape fabric in my opinion. But when you’re on a budget, it doesn’t matter if they’re raised or not I totally agree and I’m glad your perennials are coming back this year. That’s wonderful. Apparently the cardboard is working. 🌷🪴😊

    Don't know your zone but when I lived in zone 6 I planted a border of Liriope. Worst mistake I ever made! It sent out suckers even underneath sidewalk. After 2 years of attempting to control that issue i gave up. Removed every bit and went with stacked rock border and planted annuals every spring. Each spring I switched plants to avoid boredom. Lol. Good luck with your endeavours. BTW a word from this gardener: never overplant perennials. Allow for mature growth as posted on can label. Those annual Sunpatiens are way too close. Instant planting to appear full is costly and wasteful. Overcrowding young plants results in spindly growth sacrificing the mounding habit. Not criticizing your first efforts; just offering bit of advice from this well-seasoned gardener of 50+ years.

I used cardboard and planted fire chief arborvitae bushes, small specimen weeping norfolk pine, some mondo grass and some perennials. Soaked the cardboard then covered it all with 3 to 4 inches of mulch. It's going in the 3rd year and has worked out beautifully.

      Maybe topping cardboard with mulch instead of soil keeps the weeds at bay better? When you mow the bad stuff doesn’t have as good of a chance of surviving? The issue is any further planting just using mulch you are not able to plant on top , you would have to dig? But the digging gets it down where the worms and good critters are? The good fungi… just some thoughts after watching countless videos of no dig gardens and the criticisms… etc

    • @deborah2768
      @deborah2768 Месяц назад +4

      @gmaw23beauties37 the purpose was to kill the grass and weeds without having to use pesticides or hand dig them out. The cardboard smothers everything. Main thing is to wet the cardboard so it lays flatter. Worms will eventually eat the cardboard and turn it to mulch. I was able to plant right away cutting thru the cardboard to insert the plants. When planted added the mulch....soaked it down and it worked out beautifully.

    I think this is a good idea but, you may want to consider using landscape fabric as well. Over a period of time, the cardboard is going to decompose and you will have grass in your beds. Another thing to consider is what type of grass you have in your lawn. If you have Bermuda grass, it reproduces by fragmentation of rhizomes and runners. This is why you would need landscape fabric doubled up. I think this is important too know if you have creeping grass such as Kentucky Blue grass, Bermuda, Creeping Red Fescue etc.

    • @homeandgardenwithanna.
      @homeandgardenwithanna.  Месяц назад +11

      Despise landscape fabric! lol. I just pulled it up in backyard. We have fescue. We will deal with it as it is. We did use the fabric in backyard on bermuda and it killed it like you said. But, different conditions out front. Thank you! keep the advice coming!

    Beautiful!
    My first time sucked as it rained real hard days after. This made the area a swamp as the water didn't go through the cardboard and the mulch wasn't as deep as yours. I now poke holes in the cardboard to let the water get through.
    Also, digging a deep trench that slopes helps keep the mulch from spilling all over the edges.
    Just a part of learning.

    Greeting's from Ireland, My wife has no interest in gardening but tells me that our small front garden looks like a mini garden centre and I wouldn't blame her. At the moment there are fifty two pots of perennial's, six pot's of annual's on the windowsill's and four flower bed's. There is a glasshouse out in the back and a no dig veg garden. I'm thinking of creating no dig flower bed's out the back in autumn. I plan to split plants that have been in pots for a number of year's and plant them in the new bed's. I make my own compost in the three bay system and should have enough for both the veg and flower's.

      I’ve been doing no dig for years. You gave me a new idea though. Put down good soil on top of the cardboard for the plants that don’t need to be planted as deep. That REALLY will cut down on weeds. Good team work 😊

    I can't wait to see how everything looks once it starts blooming! I need to get a kneeling pad like yours because of terrible arthritis and twisted knees. Thank you for this great video! I had completely given up on dreams of having even a little flower garden this year, but you've given me much hope!

    Hey Friend, Happy Friday. I’m always enjoying all of your gardening and outdoors videos, you have such a green thumb that I wish I had. 😢❤ I agree there’s always room for plants and flowers in your garden so it’s better to have more than you think you need than not enough. ❤🥰🦋
