Sooooo important to let the trees and shrubs breathe at the root. Think doughnut, not volcano. I LOVE that you addressed this! Other content providers don't seem to know or remember to pass it along. Another reason (besides that plants and trees breathe at the roots), is that with mulch heaped in a volcano, you've provided cover for insects and pests to work unseen, eating, breeding, infesting, and ultimately destroying trees and shrubs. Big fan now! Like and subscribed!
Summertime look for me as a landscaper is as follows. 1.Green polo shirt with my logo 2. Tan shorts to tan my white Celtic legs 3. Approach trainers That’s it. Cool channel mate! All the best from Leeds UK 👍
Great video! My one addition is prelayering newspaper or cardboard first. After taking out the weeds, water everything well, then cover everything with cardboard or quad layers of newspaper, overlapping where they meet. If its summer or you live in Texas etc, definitely water everything, the soil first, then the newspapers/cardboard. Soak it all. Then, is when you lay down the mulch, wood chips, bark etc. Soak it all again. The cardboard/newspaper has a few pros: it acts as extra weed barrier for a couple weeks/months until it breaks down. It feeds the soil as it breaks down. Earthworms love wet cardboard/paper, and will aerate the soil and fertilize it by pooping. weed barrier/fertilizer/ attracts worms/ makes the bark mulch on top last longer. Its better than the black weed material which is basically plastic stuff, that ends up as a mess over time, weeds do grow through it, it doesnt decompose. I learned the hard way! At least with the paper, it has many benefits, although it only works for the first few months etc, depend on where you live, the climate. But it breaks down, and saves having to pull up black bits of plastic sheeting with weeds growing through it. Horrible job!
Watched your video this morning before spreading 10 yards of mulch. Can’t thank you enough for sharing this knowledge and time-saving tips! Let me know if I can send you a tip in appreciation!
Looking forward to mulching my own yard. Question, if I sprayed weeds in my beds with some weed killer do I have to wait a certain amount of time before I mulch? Keep up the great work!
I thought, can you really lay mulch wrong? I got some tips from you though. Keep off the edges of grass. Don’t put too close to plants. I don’t use a pitch fork, too heavy. I do turn my rake over to smooth it out. Great job!
Query... if you want to regularly feed your soil with blood fish and bone powder, would you just scatter it on top of the mulch or do you scrape it away to add? My bed is quite full and that would be quite difficult if so 😅
Hi Garden Guy, that project is appealing. Well, my house is brick, and I'm indecisive about dark brown cedar mulch or black for Knock-out bushes and perennials. Please Help! 🤷🏾
Got a question. When you pick up mulch(or any material) what's the logistics involved in getting it paid for? Does the customer pay material cost up front for you to use? If so how does it look on paper by the end of the job such as on an invoice?
Okay....really great to see the Pro side of what you do...excellent work & beautiful results....where did you get the music for your videos..works well.
I need to learn and be an expert at this I have no experience. Now ??? So you don't take out the old mulch and if so it's heavy where do you dump it..and you don't have to cover it with sheet before you lay the new mulch
I would absolutely not want the company I hire to blow the mulch in my grass,,,,It definitely needs to be swept up….landscaping companies have always swept mine up!
I want to make something like this in the front of my house but it makes me sad to kill the grass. Are there any alternatives to get this kind of look without having to kill the grass?🥺
Sadly something has to go to add something new. A good life lesson too! But thankfully if you can cut out the grass and preserve some of the soil then you can use it for sod somewhere you want to grow better grass!
Depends on how many and how tough the weeds are that are already there. If they are tough then I would either remove the top 1 inch of soil, add 3 inches of soil, or lay fabric and then mulch.
Well, it has its ups and downs. I prefer the natural mulches. Just make sure you have solid borders and landscape fabric underneath if you do rubber mulch. It can get messy quick.
I really like mulching, it gives instant satifaction seeing a clean gardenbed.

I no your wife is very proud to have you...very skillful and helpful as a man😂
Just mulched my yard and used these new tips!

For sure,I have a mulch job,and I get paid 15 dollars an hour,and I’m only 11 and going into 7th grade!
Eta to go!! Keep it up!
Child labor, cool 😂
Planted some flower bulbs today and added some celery plants to mix in for contrast . I then did mulch around everything.
You need to invest in a dump trailer man! As a landscaper myself, it’s probably one of the best pieces of equipment I have.
ugh! now the wife is going to bug me to mulch around the house. Thanks, Mr Gardenguy!
😂😂😂
I would like to see you in the same type of shorts and a tee shirt with the logo your Dad showed the other day.

Always assume tips are welcome, and provide them! 🙂 Standing by.
Nice mulching! Thanks for sharing your expertise!
It looks beautiful.
Yup the old garden guy logo on the t-shirt! Dark shirt/long sleeve w/ your dads logo! Easy Peasy...!
Hi, Benj! Good tips ! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

So awesome just loved the video
When mulching next to your cement walkway, it’s best to put up some type of barrier, right?
Thank you so much for this video I came here after a landcapper dissapointed me after messing my front lawn up and side house 😭
Gardenguy merch. Wear it when you are working jobs, and get a magnetic sign for the truck. I enjoy your content, it is informative and humorous.
Good idea!
Thank you.
thanks for sharing ❤
You don't need mulch fashion styling. 😅
Gloves and knee pads are my suggestions 😊
This is very helpful. I have to subscribe now
Awesome, thank you! I'm glad it was helpful to you.
@@gardenguychannel very helpful
So after doing 4 out of 5 yards of mulch, I did 6 out of 8 things wrong... Haha haha - next time I pay the landscaper...
Query... if you want to regularly feed your soil with blood fish and bone powder, would you just scatter it on top of the mulch or do you scrape it away to add? My bed is quite full and that would be quite difficult if so 😅
I would add into water and then water it in. That way it filters down into the root-zone. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the vid
good info
Hi Garden Guy, that project is appealing. Well, my house is brick, and I'm indecisive about dark brown cedar mulch or black for Knock-out bushes and perennials. Please Help! 🤷🏾
I would personally do the black for greater contrast between the brick and the landscape. But that's just me!
How much would you usually charge for a job of that size?
I get paid 15 an hour and I’m only 11 so it depends
Why no ground cover to stop weeds?
Got a question. When you pick up mulch(or any material) what's the logistics involved in getting it paid for? Does the customer pay material cost up front for you to use? If so how does it look on paper by the end of the job such as on an invoice?
I pay material costs but factor that into my cost analysis. The client just sees one price at the end of the day.
@@gardenguychannel Gotcha thanks! I'd been entertaining the idea of starting up this type of self-employment, but not having a truck limits my options
Thank you so much

Yes you can lay the new mulch on the old. It will all decompose and turn into soil eventually!
I would absolutely not want the company I hire to blow the mulch in my grass,,,,It definitely needs to be swept up….landscaping companies have always swept mine up!

Doesn’t the mulch just thicker and thicker every year??when do you ever scoop come out?
Good question.
it decomposes over a the season, breaking down and feeding the soil with nutrients. Just like leaves in the forest
You and my husband have similar body types. His summer uniform is a Carhartt shirt with Columbia PFG shorts.
Do you have weed fabric under that mulch?
Nope not this bed. Sometimes I do. If there is not already a bad weed problem I like to keep the bed fabric-free so that planting is easier later.
If it's the first time the bed is being mulched do you use weed fabric,or is it ever necessary to use a weed barrier
Depends on how many and how tough the weeds are that are already there. If they are tough then I would either remove the top 1 inch of soil, add 3 inches of soil, or lay fabric and then mulch.
What's your brothers channel he's a hoot?
What is the best free mulch to get
You look great 😅😅😅 Josh too 😮😮😢😢 Nice work .
Can I put mulch on a trailer I don't have a pickup truck
Lol spoke before I watched the whole video I see now
Is rubber mulch good to use?
Well, it has its ups and downs. I prefer the natural mulches. Just make sure you have solid borders and landscape fabric underneath if you do rubber mulch. It can get messy quick.
It's called the Garden Guy Style. 🙌❤🙌
you are the man
Get Garden Guy t shirts and hats
After this we're getting tacos :)
Urban outfitters has great guy t shirts that are hip
Print some t-shirts. Good advertising and you can sell merch.
You need your logo on a tank let your arms out bro
👍
Now I want Tacos
I was watching your video and I was actually listening to you until I saw you using a freaking handheld battery powered blower. Are you kidding me?
Nope it's a gas powered blower
I think u look just fine
What’s not looking good right now is you blowing black mulch into these people yard instead of picking it up 🤦♂️
Unnecessarily long video. Could’ve been cut down to 2-3 minutes easily
Hater lol don’t watch it if it bothers you
