I just got one of these lighters and your video was exactly what I needed. Everything I needed to know to get up and running. Very well done, very well explained and illustrated. I always find it heart warming when I come across a video like this where someone has put time and effort into sharing their knowledge and experience to help others. Thank you!
Thank you so much for putting this guide together. Your casual comment about their price earlier has absolutely floored me, as I've been left about a dozen or so of these lighters by my grandfather in both silver and gold, some with beautiful leather cases. He worked on pipeline and electrical development projects across the province of BC and while I didn't have very much time with him before he passed I"m sure he was immensely proud of his collection. According to some preliminary ebay searching, there's easily a few thousand dollars in rollagas lighters as well as some other rather collectible dunhill lighters. None will be sold, but all will now have a reason to be rebuilt and appreciated :)
Dude your AWESOME! I don’t care how old this video is. Many, many thanks to you sir for posting this video and sharing your information on getting a vintage Dunhill Rollagas lighter working again! Years ago I purchased a nonworking vintage Dunhill Rollagas lighter off Ebay, then sent it off to get it restored and working, etc. and yes it worked well afterwards…..well just recently I was going to use it and well it didn’t work!? It would just spark but not produce a steady flame? Believe it or not I had already purchased that Service Kit years ago and had it stored. After searching RUclips videos, etc. I found yours and well after following your instructions, etc. I got my vintage Dunhill Rollagas lighter back, working in excellent condition! Again thank you Sir!
Great video! Managed to get a lighter I was gifted up and running in no more than 10 minutes. I used mini screwdriver, cotton buds, wd40, and that’s it! Wish I’d have bothered to look into it sooner, didn’t realise how easy it would be! Thanks again
Thanks for this video. Disappointed you didn't make more of them for the Rollagas, but I get the frustration. A main tip that I can offer for your focus issues is you need to play by the rules that auto-focus uses if you're going to use auto-focus. When you're trying to show something like this lighter in the foreground, you can't have objects in the background, such as the keyboard, butane and tools. The camera does not know that you're not trying to show those things. If that's not practical and you are trying to shoot your active workspace and its not focusing on the right thing, the easiest thing to do is just put your hand behind what you want to show, to temporarily block the things that the camera is actually focusing on.
Thank you so much for this video! My dad has an old Dunhill which has never worked since I was a kid. Didn’t know anything about this lighter until I found your repair video. Really excited to repair it for him!
This is one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen, and I just purchased a vintage lacquered Rollagas which I plan to service myself. Thank you for that! But the real reason I'm commenting is the unexpected " *beautiful... big fu--ing flame* " line @ 23:12 ... absolutely priceless, made me spit out my coffee and burst out in laughter! Have a good one!
Thanks so much for the great video! I was given my Mom's old Dunhill upon her passing a few years ago, and I am really happy to learn it can be repaired and restored to beauty and function. This was a very informative video and you explained everything very well, and it makes me happy to know there are still people who care about such things and are willing to share their expertise with others, and for free! God Bless You! .
Thanks for making this video. I have been looking for one since I was past my late father's dunhill. I now know its a 70 and am confinent enough to give it a go.
i bought my first dunhill from an antique stall at some fate 20+yrs ago, was a 1966 model, worked perfectly, even worked perfectly just before i saw this vid! after that dunhill i went and bought a brand new st dupoint, still have it, but never use it as its a pain to refill, anybody that owns one will know what i mean!, then went and bought a brand new dunhill, the one thats still for sale with dunhill written big and bold both sides of the lighter, that was in 02 iirc, after a few years i started having problems with it, loosing gas and the flame was just wrong, carnt say i helped the matter as i tried to sort the top of the pin out with a pair of pliers! not recommended, so its been sat in it's box for 15yrs or so. this brings us to today, as on a whim, dont know where it came from, i searched dunhill lighter service, and saw this gem of a vid pop up, i had no idea it was so simple, so now i have a 1966 dunhill with a not so great pin and flame that looses gas, and have a perfectly working dunhill signature again!!
I just bought one....a used one but in really good like NEW shape, and this video really helped me fix my flame issue. I’m going to go buy a kit now just to keep it on hand for future repairs. Thank you again for an excellent tutorial. 👍🏻 -Stephen, Ohio
Sitting here in April 2020, week 3 of quarantine. I decided to refurb my late father's 60's Rollagas. Followed your instructions, ordered from the recommended ebay seller and all went well. Just waiting on the right fill adapter. Thanks so much for posting this.
Recently purchased one of these and struggled with it for a week, this video was a huge help getting a needle value/butane control situation figured out. Thanks!
Beautiful lighters, I just bought one from ebay that I had as a teenager but sadly lost, now I'm 52 it's great to have one again. Very helpful video, enjoyed very much, thank you. Best wishes from London!
wow man, I've owned Dunhill Rollagas lighters and had one in my front right pocket for decades, besides my own, a fella has always gotta have a lighter handy to light a ladies cigarette, rarer now days sadly. but but but that is the best tutorial i have ever seen, i usualy send my away for service but ill try my own next time. Good job , thanks for the effort. should tell about the time i took 6 to Vietnam to have serviced and on flying out security wouldn't let me fly with them and wanted my to dump them in garbage bin.
thanks man! didn't manage to fix my issue, gas is leaking from the adjustment port but I still really appreciate how well made and articulate this was! learned a lot about how they work
Thank you very much for the video. Fixed my Dunhill and it works fine. It will definitely need new O rings. For the time being I just stretched them out so they stick out and seal properly. I pulled out the little felt packing in the valve which looked worn and flipped it over. Also the flame tube was clogged and sticky. I tried a very fine wire but it wouldn't go in. Instead I put in a few small drops of WD-40 in it and that did the job.
Great video. Just purchased my first 1971 Dunhill Rollagas, (eBay), from Japan. Can't wait for it to get here. And now that I've watched your video I feel more confident about plunking down the two Benjamins to buy it. Before my purchase I did my due dilligence, and came to the same conclusion you have... there's really no way to fake these. The Swiss over-engineer everything. The lighter I bought is in "near mint" condition. For the money I paid compared to the cost of a new Dunhill I figure I got a real bargain considering, as you said, they have cheapened the internals a bit and still cost about a grand. Thanks for all the great info. I have subscribed so just in case I do need to disassemble mine I can get a step-by-step tutorial from someone who knows what he's doing. Like your style!
Many thanks for doing this video. The clarity with which you explain things is excellent. I was having some problems with my lighter but it works beautifully now. Many thanks I definitely would not have been able to fix it without you.
What a brilliant video. I’ve just acquired two dunhill lighters and I feel confident now to do a bit of servicing on them. They are so beautiful and well made. No problems though will no doubt be able to source elsewhere. But the video was excellent, great and simple explanations - thank you.
'Am an old time lighter collector (65-70 years!) and remember when you couldn't give away a Dunhill gas lighter, petrol lighters being greatly preferred. Really enjoyed the video, thanks, Les-in_CR
Fine piece of work. Demystifying the Dunhill. Done with great clarity. I had a great one for many years that was my main travel treasure. It was stolen from my luggage in Italy I think. Had to put it in my check-in luggage since 9-11 as the USA will not let you fly with a lighter in your pocket. So I blame The Terrorists for getting my rollagas stolen. Today my wife bought me another for my 70th birthday and I found your video at same time. Best regards and thank you.
I’m not 100% on the fact its the lighter itself they won’t allow you to have, but it’s illegal to fly with a lighter that contains butane in it for lots of reasons. I guarantee there’s ways to avoid having to do that. Like taking out the flint and butane and/or just disassembling it. I know people who have done it but not sure if it made it legal or not.
Thank You Thank You for this video. After my vintage Dunhill Lighter had been sitting for 3yrs to be repair once again and costing a lot! By watching your video I was able to repair it myself Thanks to You. Also Thank you for recommenting the Vintage Dunhill Rollagas person for parts!
You are the best. You provided great detailed info/knowledge while making me laugh the whole way through! Hilarious expressions! You make it look very simple. Thanks for making the video. Great job.
This is essential viewing for anyone buying a Rollagas lighter. I bought one on eBay and had some minor issues with it. But because I knew how to open it, check it out, and adjust it, I soon figured it out. Thanks. Would love to see a part 2 in the future.
Perfect guide, a BIG help for my Dunhill Tallboy which hasn´t been running for years. Thanks to your great video i can enjoy my tallboy. Great job! Thanks
Thanks a lot for this video! I just got my gramps rollagas and was super hesitant to even try it out. now it's working just fine, even the flint had hardly been used at all!
Great video, thank you. Just bought the repair kit, actually bought a few because i have 6 of those beauties and they all need a service........thanks again.
I was encouraged by this video to service the one I just bought. I am missing the tiny spring at the tip of needle valve. Hopefully I can find a replacement one. Thank you. Most informative.
You can source one from practically any disposable lighter. I would suggest one from either a flame valve from a clear adjustable Chinese lighter, or a refill valve on any lighter. You can also cut it to size or use a similar flint spring and cut to size.
Such great information I love little hobbies like this. I am also into fountain, pens, straight, razor, shaving, and collecting all Gillette safety razors. Use traditional, shave soap and a badger brush as well. I love old-school things. I also roll my own cigarettes and use a zippo, but I want to get into old vintage lighters as well.
Excellent and informative video, I have a rollagas I bought 30 years ago and watching this video gave me the confidence to follow you and give it a good service, I was even able to replace the filter for the gas, I used a cigarette filter which I cut to measure, works like a charm! Many thanks for posting. maybe you should get a go pro and strap it to your head, then you don't need to worry about the camera, we see what you see. Looking forward to more videos, make one about the gas valve, thats a good idea! Cheers!!
Use a sponge from a disposable adjustable plastic lighter. I believe these need two. Take off the metal disk of course. These are far superior to anything else available. But if it works, it works!
This video is INCREDIBLY useful!! Thank you very much!! If you have any advice on replacing the needle valve seal I would appreciate it. I have some 1mm thick O ring. Even written out instructions if its too hard to video would be amazing!! Honestly a very comprehensive well explained video. Thank you
They are Nice lighters for sure! I have had four but eventually sold them all and replaced them With IM Corona made lighters. The problem with dunhill rollas is the price and parts availability. I sold my last two Dunhill Rollagas Pipe lighter's for $350.00 each and the buyers were extremely happy to have them. I'm more of a buy fix and sell at a profit and purchase more to fix. You are right though, they are definitely heirloom quality collectible!
I do exactly the same! Although I do keep a few of them. My favorites are butane all metal piezoelectric ones. And 12v. But nos ones I have to convince myself to let most go eventually. Lol
Well, my lighter arrived from Japan. After filling it with butane it worked great for about ten seconds. Then it suddenly became a leaking blowtorch. The lighter ignited. My hand ignited. And it went for a ride across the room. Thankfully I did get a repair kit from the gentleman referred to in this video. While this process is not rocket science it does require some patience/experimentation as Incorene suggests. After disassembly I noticed the original o-rings were brittle. The one on the regulator was actually flattened in one spot. I added one of the spacers in the kit to the one that came with my lighter. It seems to have solved the blowtorch effect. I also opted to change the spring on the end of the needle valve. The original was very compressed and only about half the size of the replacement that came in the kit. I only had to use about half of one of the supplied packing cylinders to replace the original packing. As stated in the video... the trick is getting the right amount of packing in the regulator to get a consistent flame. I found that when I had packed too much into the regulator it wouldn't screw down flush with the bottom of the lighter without excessive torque. I removed small amounts until I was able to get this right, and I finally got a consistent 3/4" flame. My first time around, so it took me a while, but if you hang in there it's a satisfying feeling to know you DIY'd it!
I do vintage repair and most of us use actual manufactured filters/sponges made for lighters that are extremely thin and very effective. They are only sourced from disposable adjustable lighters like the clear cheap plastic lighters from the dollar store. These I believe need 2. They are very thin and have a pinhole just as the lighter itself does so it regulates extremely well. Thats why lighters today are so easily adjustable to the exact height you want. Also source the o rings from all disposable lighters.
Brilliant , informative video. Thank you so much. I have 3 diffrent lighters a dupont ,christian dior and a dunhill. So I was very happy after seeing this. Keep up the good work.
One more thank you ! Thank you for this video and like many others that have written, you seem to have a great gift of explaining the details with a great sense of timing and clear articulation. I've had one of these letters before and I hope I have it still in my storage somewhere. I will eventually look for it and make it work. I was originally looking for a video that would show me would it would take to have a regular fuel Zippo type of lighter work correctly. But I enjoyed your video and it actually educated me. thank you.
Fabulous video. It’s a couple of years old now, but it’s still helping people like me sort out their leaking Rollagas lighter. I’m happy to report that my lighter is now fully operational. The best part is that after I’d buttoned it all up I listened for gas and sure enough it was pissing out. Without this video I’d have sparked it up, which would’ve been fun, but it’s probably better that I didn’t given that after I turned the valve in until I couldn’t hear the gas there was still a big fuckin’ flame...
I took out my fathers Dunhill ...! and cleaned it and trying to find stone .. Thanks to your Very detailed video ! I will try to sell it It is in perfect condition
Great guide. I look forward to more as you're a natural at it. The swearing helps because that's exactly what I'm like when I attempt fiddly jobs and start dropping shit on the carpet!
Sweet video bud!!!!! I LOVE my ebay rollagas, must of got lucky with mine, right out of the box filled it up, put in a flint (zippo, didn't know any better) and it lit first time, no leaks, not bad for seventy dollars CANADIAN.
Great video! I have repaired a few lighters now because I work in a cigar bar in ATL. I have one at the moment that is leaking gas out of the thumb wheel when the damper is shut. I've replaced all the seals and have taken the needle valve apart. The needle valve wouldn't spring. I replaced everything, and it is leaking.
Thank you so much. Wonderful video. I have a blue enamel dunhill that has never been used. It’s 50 years old. Needed to know how to use it and add fuel and flints. TY
I inherited a dunhill from the 40s some years ago it needed some love and care of I remember correctly I sent it off to Dunhill where they conditioned it for very little money I don't smoke so it's been put away for another time
Hi, excellent, very detailed, really enjoyed watching it. I'm trying to change the flint wheel but can't take the screw out, should I do anything else before attempting to take the screw out?. I would be very grateful to hear back from you. Many thanks Merdod
Thank you for that great video, i have 3 vintage Dunhills from my father and 2 didnt worked very well,I adjusted the screw on the bottom of the lighter and now they work perfect!
Oh my gosh.. learned so much.. thank you thank you thank you.. the valve and height with the hiss combo is what I was having trouble with and all good now 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Nice to see a silver hobnail with silver rolling wheel, a lot of the ebay listings have the gold wheel & flame adjuster 👎. Great video, thanks from across the pond
I have a lighter in that style (that I bought in a flea market some years ago) and managed to finally pinpoint the problem I've had with it. Inside the rod in which the regulator is in seems to have a blockage... the problem is that the blockage also seems to be a part of the rod or something. Before, it was leaking from where the rod screws in. I realised that there was an O-ring that dried and done. On a budget I fixed this by using a little bit of silicon caulk. It's safe enough. 25:44 I think it's what you're talking about...
If you can’t find an o ring that works, you have no choice but to use some sort of teflon plumbers tape or a type of flex/gasket seal. Sometimes these required very thin o rings that aren’t made anymore and will not screw back in without being super thin. Some o rings just aren’t made anymore. I was told it costs $100 or so just for someone to make the exact mold for it.
Of all the videos by people who make and upload only one video, this one has to be among the best.
Thanks to this video one more dunhill is backup and running. The lighter was left to my wife by her father who just passed way a month ago. Thanks.

Great rendering of repairs to a classic Dunhill lighter. 10/10 🎉
Recently purchased one of these and struggled with it for a week, this video was a huge help getting a needle value/butane control situation figured out. Thanks!
This reminds me what the internet is all about.
Cheers legend!
This video gave me all the direction i needed to get my lighter I’ve had for 15 years working for the first time. Thanks man.
What a fantastic start to Dunhill lighters, thank you

Thank you very much for the great video. I wish more people would be so well informed and organized prior to offering how to videos.
What a great video thank you so much. I have noticed I’ve been filling my lighter rather frequently I think it’s the O-ring thanks again. Michael

Great video! Many thanks for that! Now I just have to find my old dunhill, misplaced in the attic 30 years ago, and am good to go! Cheers
This video, along with a repair kit from "vintagedunhillrollagascollectors" restored my late mother's lighter to working condition. Thank you!
Thank you for this, just repaired my new to me lighter thanks to your video!
Thanks so much I got my grandads old lighter working with your help!

Lol
Just bought my first Dunhill lighter! Thank you so much for this video! It was very informative!
Perfect guide, would love a guide like this covering the st dupont lighter
But I enjoyed your video and it actually educated me. thank you.
Typo: lighter... another typo: " what it would take..."
Great video thanks for sharing your knowledge, and don’t be so hard on yourself, the camera shot were fine. Thanks again
Your video has been hugely helpful to me as a newbie to the lighter game, thanks a ton. James
I took out my fathers Dunhill ...! and cleaned it and trying to find stone ..
Thanks to your Very detailed video !
I will try to sell it
It is in perfect condition
"It's more likely than not that your lighter will leak"
Now that's what I call quality!
just got an old one recently, never used a lighter ever (don't smoke, for candles). Very educational, thanks!
Thank You very much! With this help I made my Dunhill running again.
Great guide. I look forward to more as you're a natural at it. The swearing helps because that's exactly what I'm like when I attempt fiddly jobs and start dropping shit on the carpet!
Excellent video! 👏👏👏👏👏 I just bought a Dunhill lighter and a repair kit, this was very helpful 😊😊😊👍👍
TY
So glad you made this video it has helped me immensely.
I inherited a dunhill from the 40s some years ago it needed some love and care of I remember correctly I sent it off to Dunhill where they conditioned it for very little money I don't smoke so it's been put away for another time
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge! It was very helpful for a new proud rollagas owner
Terrific Instructional video! ..Incredibly well explained. Thank you !
Hi, excellent, very detailed, really enjoyed watching it.
I'm trying to change the flint wheel but can't take the screw out, should I do anything else before attempting to take the screw out?. I would be very grateful to hear back from you.
Many thanks
Merdod
This video helped me so much, I panicked and almost returned my gold
Plated lighter when I got it! However the problem was simply my ignorance :)
Great Video. you got me hooked on Dunhill Lighters
Thank you for that great video, i have 3 vintage Dunhills from my father and 2 didnt worked very well,I adjusted the screw on the bottom of the lighter and now they work perfect!
Excellent! Just knowing what nozzle to use when refilling was a huge help. Thank you.
Outstanding. Thank you
Oh my gosh.. learned so much.. thank you thank you thank you.. the valve and height with the hiss combo is what I was having trouble with and all good now 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I like when he goes “it might be jammed but that’s ok we can fix that”
Nice to see a silver hobnail with silver rolling wheel, a lot of the ebay listings have the gold wheel & flame adjuster 👎. Great video, thanks from across the pond
Great Video, I have just bought one that was adverstised as not working, but has a good spark, so hoping to fix her up when I get it
Just got lady loveless’s gold one from 1987 , given to me by lord loveless, got it working from this video, thanks
Great tutorial! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this. My lighter is fixed :)
Thank you for the upload. It helps a lot. Greetings from Germany
I learned a lot. I would like to buy a used one, just afraid of getting screwed. -Stephen, Ohio
Nice tutorial. It's very usefull. Makes me get a better understanding of the parts ans how to maintain a Rollagas in good condition.
Nice job. You are the best. Cheers from Brazil.
Fantastic ! Amazing ! Thanks for recording this guide !
Thank you to you and your great video I repaired my dunhill
This is a great overview. Very nice.
Great job on explaining. Please do more lighter repair.
