Repairing a Dunhill Rollagas Lighter

  • Lighter would spark but not light. Filling the lighter with butane resulted in it immediately leaking out from the reservoir. I obtained a repair kit and following the instructions I replaced the "O" rings. Although the lighter was no longer leaking, gas was not getting to the flint wheel at the top. I suspected a clogged needle valve and cleaned out the valve. The open close valve is inside the needle valve and actuated by the snuffer in the cap. The repair kit does not have any parts for the inside of the needle valve. I opened the needle valve and replace the seal. I had to make a seal from cutting an "O" ring. The lighter was then getting gas up to the top but it was giving off too much gas and the gas was leaking with the cap closed. I'm getting erratic flame sizes and sputtering of gas.
    There seems to be a very delicate balance to keep a reasonable size flame and sealing the gas so it doesn't leak. The size of the flame can be dictated by: the amount of felt at the bottom of the needle valve; the number of washers on the needle valve; the thickness of the shut off valve inside the needle valve; the adjustment the gas control valve and the adjustment of the flame control valve.
    I spent too much time on this project and have no desire to keep working on it.

    Hellow minor mistake in the repair wrong ive looked at a video of an Italian man and a asian man and they super glue a small piece of cut o ring, cut the o ring as best you can into a line, you have to super glue that little dot at the end of the pin that goes up and down, what you did wrong was instead of glueing the a smaller cylinder line of o ring to the up and down pin you put it to the back and its good you did not glue it down as you would not have been able t get gas out of the nipple, you must glue the o ring to the end of the up and down needle cause when the needle goes up with the spring it disengages the oring and when the snuffer pushes the pin down it causes the o ring to engage into the end and close the flow of gas, once you glue that piece which is very tedious I did it just now it wont leak the way it leaking again I recommend watching those videos of the people from other countries and mimick the steps I just got mine working perfectly you just need to get learn the proper ways of sealing its rather difficult on this lighter

    Thanks for showing this. I just got one and couldn't figure out how to replace the flint. Fixed it as it has 2 spare flints.

    That's a 1956-1960 Rollagas. This would be the second commercially available variant of the rollagas, and my personal favorite. Good luck with it, it's absolutely worth saving.

    Nice video. You can have it professionally repaired by Dunhill or a watchmaker. Looks like a nice model, so worth thinking about.!

    That little seal you put into the needle not in the screw then the spring and back into the brass holder

      Clean out the needle valve hole and put in new sponge (in the correct place :()

    I use pliers. I don’t recommend new people to though. Don’t press hard and shake one hand/pliers side to side instead of straight apart and it comes right off. Otherwise it may seem impossible. The acetone and alcohol will destroy the pad/filter. You must poke a micro rod or a wire from the tie on a loaf of bread and strip the paper or plastic on it off and stick it through. He gave you those sponges to put them in as they were. Less sponge means less control. Especially if using porous material.

      You might have to grind a screwdriver to fit it.

    Wrong way to use a fork a be careful with the spring inside can jump out,you can for sure use 2 pliers and is very soft material becuse you can ruin the needle iniside then you must straight it out..

    Why didn’t you replace the sponge? Thats your flame adjustment! Without it you can’t control it! It’s just like a crack lighter. You have to put the sponge in. All that work and missed the most important part! :)

    • @narmi3134
      @narmi3134 Год назад

      Hi, when you say 'sponge' what part are you referring to exactly? Thank you!

    • @rafaeltorre1643
      @rafaeltorre1643 Год назад

      @@narmi3134 Sponge aka pressure regulator aka filter. Its all referring to the same thing. Have you ever taken off that white wheel that you adjust on a clear Chinese lighter and looked under? Theres a disk w/ a sponge with a hole in the middle. Thats what you need. Cut to size. Without that you cannot adjust the flame. It will either be clogged or a flame thrower! Let me know if you have any more questions. I rebuild vintage lighters.

      @@rafaeltorre1643hey, can you help me out please? I’m trying to work on my rollagas and I order same kit as in this video to rebuild lighter. I’m trying to repack the course flame adjustment screw and this kit from eBay came with filter disk and filter pad(sponge). Do I need to put in the filter disk first and then put sponge on the top? Do I need to punch hole in the disc or no?
      When I removed the old filter sponge it didn’t have a disc on the bottom so that’s why I’m asking

    Don’t waste your money if your dunhill breaks down. I spent $15 on a repair kit and another $20 for gas and a month of working on getting this fixed and it Still doesn’t work. I’m throwing it in the trash and using a $2 disposable lighter from now on. Learned my lesson the hard way!!!!!!
