GROUND FIND lighter Restoration.

- I bought this rusty vintage lighter which was found from the ground. I will restore and rescue this vintage item. The lighter is an Imco Triplex 6600 Junior. I really enjoy repairing these Imco lighters because they have such interesting mechanics, but I will do other stuff as well. You can see one side is much rustier and the rust is darker because it has been underground. That speeds up the rusting process because the water in the dirt doesn't evaporate as fast as from the surface. The lighter need a complete reassembly because it needs to be re-plated with nickel to prevent it from rusting again. I'm wondering if my video titles should say ASMR restoration or repair because so many comments in my video mention that.

The disassembly took a bit of figuring out how it was put together but other than that the only trouble I had was the pin that was stuck inside the wheel. Eventually I had to drill it out and even then there was a piece of metal (from the pin I assume) stuck inside the wheel. There was a space between the 2 holes on the wheel which allowed the metal piece to move around and I wasn't able to push it out so I had to try to drill it out. I used a nail to block the piece from moving around too much so the drill would catch it.
After I had all the pieces apart, I used a rust remover to remove the rust. The solution is proprietary but I'm confident that it is a acidic solution with some chelating agents and other stuff that enhance the reaction caused by the acid. The "fuel tank" was bubbling a while after I poured the rust remover so I figured that could be a result of unwanted dissolving as no other rusty components were bubbling. I tested with magnet that it should be steel but I didn't want to risk it as spare parts would be impossible to find. I just wasted the part with the rust remover, which is more work for me but much shorter exposure to the acid. After this I washed everything with water and dried it.
After the rust was gone I carefully sanded the rust damages from the pieces and polished them. For flat areas I started with 400 grit paper and over the patterns I only sanded quickly with very fine papers starting from 1500 grits. this helps me to get better polish but doesn't ruin the patterns.
For the nickel plating I used a solution of nickel sulphate and nickel acetate which I've made. You can learn more about the process when you search for "electroplating". As an improvement to my previous projects I added a third anode. This will allows me better exposure to the plating process so all areas will have more even plating. It's also a good idea to turn the pieces around every once in a while.
The assembly was quite simple process. I was a little worried how to put the pin in while holding all the parts in place with the spring and all, but because I sharpened the tip of the pin it found it's way through easily.

What would you like to see restored next? Or would you like to see me build some of my own designs every once in a while?
agree, really enjoy the vintage electronics, I restore the odd lantern, always like to see them too.
I'd like to see an original design from the mind of the tinkerer himself.
Anything old and neglected restored back to its "newness" is good with me ; )
anything you want to do. and i'd like to see your designs.
Odd Tinkering
I'd like to see a firearm restored, if that's allowed
If not, then you can do your own thing
For some reason I "oooed" when the new water container was brought out. Fancy
Haha. Very fancy indeed
Oh shit you should think about some music while you tinker. Love your channel btw
Very impressive that new fangle water container. Its an UPGRADE!!
Professor Calamitous Nah screw the music. It’s actually quite relaxing watching these restoration videos with just the sound of the work being done
@@irishmuscle7352 I agree. Just working sounds!
Very nice. You didn’t use clickbait in your title. Shows a respectable man.
Thanks! I'm sure someone will argue about that because I'm not starting the video digging in the wood and "accidentally" finding the lighter 😂 also it would be really boring to name every just video lighter restoration 😁 but yeah, scam titles are the worst but they work because most people forget the title very soon after they start watching
Es falso, cuando lo puso en el removedor de óxido lo reemplazo por uno sin óxido
Mmmmm no.
Obviamente el removedor hizo su trabajo y quito el mayoría del óxido. Luego él tenia que sepillar y limpiar el resto del óxido para que parezca limpo

Very nostalgic seeing one of these lighters. My father received the same one as an Anniversary Gift. I still have it and it still works like a charm! Good restoration!
are they worth anything ? i got one in almost mint condition..
What are these lighters called?
@@Ess4z This lighter is an Imco Triplex 6600 Junior I believe. My uncle has one displayed on his morgue desktop
@@cyberhawk80 probably around $20
Probably like 200
Honestly this lighter is so elegant. So many parts, good job on restoring that masterfully, Michael.

michael?
I’ve same one! My grandpa’s
Well done young man. You clearly have the love for craftmanship rooted deep down within you, quite a novel thing in todays "modern" throwaway consumer society. A pleasure to watch.
Thanks!
THIS is my kind of ASMR
Thanks!
me too, I love watching his videos at night 😂
I see you invested in a new water container!
A very fine investment I might add.
*liquid ice container 😂
I'm so happy, finally he has earned enough RUclips money to afford his very own brand new water container.
You just have to appreciate the craftsmanship back in the days. No short ends, no cheap materials used and the item was designed with outstanding ingenuity. Excellent restoration for such an item with intricate parts.
The rust removal, plating and sanding have got to be my most favorite parts about your videos. That and seeing it work at the end with the before and after!! Love it!!
Definitely one of the coolest lighters iv seen restoration of! The candle feature is really awesome! Great job!
MP44 of lighters
Yay, you got a new water bowl! haha
some of these old lighters are genius inventions
Absolutely amazing how you can bring back to life extremely old things.I like the way you put passion in everything you do.Great job, please carry on.
This video displays the grace and beauty of silence whilst the craftsman go's about his work.
Would be really great to read about the age of those objects he restores and maybe some background on the item(original cost to the purchaser ) ,for example .
I am amazed how clean it looks straight after the rust remover. ✨
I love seeing stuff like this changed from "OY, VAT A MESS", to "fresh from the factory"
I remember seeing this exact same model lighter in highschool in the 80's that a student had. He showed how it worked in candle mode and used it exclusively for lighting his dope.
I can’t believe my eyes! 😱. When I first saw it I thought no way. Brilliant work! 👍🇳🇿
I used to work in an electro plating shop... 2 things: perfect cleanliness of the part (no grease or dirt) + constant slow agitation when plating. You are doing great work!
I have one model like this
And your restoration helpped me to clean the mine, thanks
I don't speak english good sorry
Your English is good. It's nice how this video helped you!
Que pena descubrí este canal buscando como sacar el oxido de un encendedor en iguales condiciones de herrumbrado, el mismo modelo que pena no saber inglés y que es de 2020 saludos cordiales
Careful and beautiful restoration. One of the best I have seen in RUclips. Nice video, detailed without been boring. Thank you!
Thanks. I try to keep the videos interesting
I bought one of these years ago from a market cause i love old objects. Never took the time to look it up but this tutorial is perfect! I can't wait to get it back in working order and use it again.
I find it relaxing to watch these videos. And I'm learning new techniques and tips for fixing things as well. Double win
5 minutes, nice. not into lighters but this is nice.
Watching your lighter restorations has inspired me to do one of my own; coincidentally one of the lighters I managed to pick up is an Imco. While playing with it I recognised the mechanism fron your video :D
Keep up the good work. It is really enjoyabke stuff and even more interesting as you show all the steps and some of the difficulties you have.
Very fantastic. Renew everything is perfect too. Thank you for your enthusiasm 👏
I can watch these for hours. Hypnotic and so satisfying.
Sir u desserve thé bisser respect for this spectacular work its an art really . Fromage Algeria 🇩🇿 with love
Man, where have you been!? I had a rough week. Thank you for this :)
Sorry to hear about your week. I'm glad this helped
I used to have one of these lighters. I never could get it working. This video was thus wonderful to see. Thank you!
A collection of these lighters would make a splendid exhibit at the Sydney museum.
all of your videos are quite satisfying to watch
Vintage lighters were my first experiences with tinkering and restoration.. so you can imagine I quite like this video and channel 👏🏼👏🏼
Oh, _nice mechanism_ ... thanks for thaking the time showing us this. Much appreciated.
I would like to see you restore more Soviet stuff. Their design are always pretty rad.
I like your videos very much. I've just subscribed . would love to see a skateboard from the 60's being restored.
Regards from Rio de Janeiro
I love lighter restorarions! I would really like more of them!👍
Fascinating lighter design. Thoroughly enjoyed the video. The added treat was when you yanked out the 'candle' section.
This Man Is Surviving All The Apocalypses 😂😂
This is a lighter made in austria, i have two similar ones
Another enjoyable restoration. YOURS is the absolute best channel because you are so personable, funny and informative. Thanks again.
Your patience is as phenomenal as your ability. Well done, sir. Another impressive restoration.
Oh. I have one of those.
The cotton and wick look like a DEAD RAT ...
Obviously WWII leftover by a German soldier..
It's all Greek to me......

This lighter is a post-World War II product.
IMCO TRIPLEX 6600 JUNIOR was released in 1955.
So, German soldier don't matter.

Thanks! I thought it was older - from what I saw on INTERNET! :-)
It’s either a dead rat, or a very sad vintage tampon.
@@Emiliapocalypse I’m dead- very sad vintage tampon
These IMCO lighters show Austrian engineering at it's finest. Just as reliable as a Zippo with the added feature of a removable candle (great for pipe smokers), an extra slot for a stand-by flint (just above spring when open), one-motion opens and strikes (rather than two-step process of open then strike with Zippo), and they're just as wind resistant and durable. This was a great lighter to see restored. The Junior model is less common than the Triplex. One thing I would mention...during the final pin assembly, the backing should cover the front flaps on both sides. Wasn't sure if anyone else commented on that. Great video.
love how you dont fill it with commentary-you just get to it!!!!!!
Your hands are shaking mad :0
But mine do too
It was a cool video, I especially like lighters restorations

I really like the retro metal design they used. Looks great.
I find these restorations quite relaxing. A bit like watching a very handy magician making things work again. Subscribed!
Hhh it's also a candle
Hey just wondering how long does the lighter fluid in one of these or similar types of lighters last?
Cheers from Australia
Someone on a youtube video said it's much longer than on a zippo. Weeks-month, I think, because they only used it rarely. I've not tested yet. I just finshed the project
@@OddTinkering thanks for that and for the quick reply.
Tbh, i have a zippo just because and the fuel frikin evaporates without me using it more than once (which is pretty annoying)
lol, that all depends on how often you light it and for how long you let it burn and of course the ambient temperature of wherever you're located... winter in Oz at the mo so probably once every 5 days-ish ; )
I stumbled upon this video, went straight to eBay and bought and restored one. Thanks so much for the video!
Great watching you work
...you have the midas touch!!!

Thanks for another sexy asmr packed video. I know this was and is your true intention for every video.
Not really intentional but it come with my style the way it evolved actually has nothing to do with asmr but I've noticed people like it so I started to remove audio noise etc
@@OddTinkering Thanks, your videos are great I'm just kidding for me though at least lmao.
Great restoration 😉
IMCOs are forever 😉 Thank you for saving one of them.
Nice work, love how you take these things and bring them back from the brink. To the 205 people who downvoted, go outside and take a serious look at your life choices.
Great restoration and your attention to detail is amazing.
I used have one of these, So glad to see it back to work, nice job
What a cool looking lighter. You did a great job. 👍👍👍👍👍
I purchased the exact same 6600 at an estate sale yesterday for 8 dollars. Same textured pattern. Great job
So many parts! I like watching you restore things with many moving parts. Carry on! 👍
When I was a smoker these were my favourite lighters.
Great restoration 😊👍🏼
The lighter turned out beautiful. You do great work.
New water, yay! Great job.
Damn he bodied that, good work!
Beautiful work as always.
Just bought one of these on eBay and thanks to your video I will try and restore it just the way you did. Awesome, can’t wait.
Custom nickel coated imco 6600. Marvelous
I love your videos man. They are so so therapeutic.
What you do is just amazing ! I love that lighter
amazed you could put it back together.......awesome.
Awesome job! Makes me want to try my hand at nickel plating!
It's not very hard. Basic high scool chemistry actually. Copper plating coins is one of the most common since experiments. This is just a variaatio of that. I recommend starting with trying to plate something with different color metal so you can see how well it's working. With this I pretty much have to try to leave the parts even in or der to find out if it worked. But by now I know it works. If you run into trouble hit me up and I might be able to help you
Wow... to many pieces. Great work👍👍👍
I can fix my lighter imco, long time unused and now again working perfectly. I can do that because this video was very clear when dissasembly the lighter. Thanks A lot for this video.
At first I missed it, but most have been one of your more complicated restores. Impressive.
The rust remover is really Awesome! 😳 So nice and clean! 👌🏼Great work, it's a cool lighter!
please never stop making videos. these are so cool!!!
You get better each time I watch your videos. Don't ever stop learning. Keep up the good work.
Oh! Made in my homecountry! Nice!
A great example of an early production unit of the 6600 with the 3-piece fuel canister and the arrow marking on the slide
Had an imco lighter just like this one, I think it was the triplex. Super solid and lasted forever, but left it at an ex's house when we broke up and I'm too afraid to get it back. 10/10 great restoration.
Nice job, looks really classy!
Great content as always. (Yay, a new water container!)

Hey, thanks. I was getting nervous that I have no idea how to fix my 6800.. the wheel had absoultely no power to strike the stone. But thanks to your video I could see the mechanism and was able to fix it!
I love restoration videos. When I saw this one of the IMCO, I had to watch as I just purchased two from Amazon. You my friend do incredible work, much respect!
IMCO has been gone for a long time, the ones on amazon are fake
Keep restoring lighters. This is cool to watch.
Wonderful video! I liked everything about it; the content, the style and especially the cadence.
Your work motivated me to fix on an old IMCO 6700 that had not been useable for some time. The bucket in the cap that covers the wick had come out which had also dislodged the spring fork that drives the flint wheel. A bit of patience and some tinkering, it’s now back in service and works a treat. Fantastic!
This on and the compass one are my favorites out of the twenty some I've watched
Turned out great! Interesting design.
Asombroso trabajo. Muchísimas Felicidades.
Eres un genio. 😱😱😱😁
