    Having worked with an extreme micromanager I can honestly say they do not think they are doing anything wrong, even if you confront them. Their own superiors are not interested in stopping micromanagement and, in many cases, even applaud it. Invariably, it causes the destruction of a team and in some cases a company. Your wasting your time dealing with these people and the best thing to do is get out.

      @Mr-S.C. some people are willing to listen to feedback and learn. When someone is showing us that they are not, at some point, I do think it makes the most sense to make decisions to preserve energy when we can.

      I had the same experience, I started speaking to HR about it and then they stopped messaging me back. I'm now in the middle of my 2-week notice. 🌞

    I wish my old supervisor saw this video, I was recently transferred to another area (I’m a factory worker), my new one told me, “As long as you solve a problem without putting yourself at risk of injury, It’s ok” in the new team, we are autonomous, everyone is trained in every area, we help each other, and we stop the production line, when rework is needed. The other one tries to brute force everything resulting in Quality Control issues, he does not allow you to leave your area and help others. After he transferred me, he found out that I was trained and certified in all of his areas. He doesn’t bother knowing each workers strengths and weaknesses.

    The one thing not mentioned in this video is that if you don't micromanage and you give your employees room to make their own decisions, this will not necessarily result in "mistakes" and "missteps". It's just as likely that the employees will come up with solutions of their own that are far better than anything you would have thought up.

      Great addition here, James. I'd say this is probably the best benefit of all of hiring people who you trust and have more expertise in their own roles than you. There's definitely an exponential power of bringing together a diverse group of people who can create a whole different level of magic than they would if they all had to do everything the exact same way as you would.

      This is relatable. My productivity of being managed by someone who is NOT a micro manager far exceeded my productivity than working for the micro manager. I have seen good workers leave because of the micro manager.

    I've just switched departments in my company due to the stress of working under a micromanager. That makes half of her department that have left due to management style.

      It's wild to me how often organizations will just juggle people around and never address the actual root cause of what is going on.

    I work at a college and three weeks before summer break approached my boss hired two cooks and then put in his two weeks which made one of the cooks the manager out of nowhere he made lots of unneeded changes and this was while I was on summer break so three weeks ago i come back to the same guy that was hired on three weeks before summer break was demoted to a regular chef and micromanaged me for three whole weeks we’re two days ago we had a verbal conversation and he tried to send me home early and write me up multiple times and today I found out he was fired because apparently someone videotaped everything he did to me that day and showed my union rep after I went to talk to my union rep and then showed the boss after I text the boss

    You are talking about management, not leadership. You can have a leader amongst your employees who can subvert your authority.
    Trust is the key. It goes both ways. (I do not trust anyone). This links to the idea of control. Allowing employees to make mistakes is a tricky one because on the one hand you want them to learn and be creative, but on the other hand you don’t want them to ruin the entire enterprise.

    I've had supervisors want me to email them every time I came and gone even though we're working the same office. I've never had an issue of being unaccountable and eventually went to HR and was asked why did they did it they just said just wanted to make sure she's okay. Did they do it to everyone else no

    I had a hard time trying to find a co-worker to break me while I was working but my supervisor never made it mandatory just voluntary many times I went without a lunch break or any break for a day

    I'm a hard worker but they always try to put too much on me and expect way too much out of me everyday but I upset a supervisor to a point where he wanted to fire me but he created the job for me to put me away from everyone else a job I did on my own it was physical mental psychological beating every day. I'm on modified duty so now other people have to do my job and my boss is not very happy. She wants me back doing my job that I've been doing for the last 15 years I'm in my 50s now

    But not least I'm always being accused of something you didn't called into the office getting the email come and see me I get so fighting when a door closes because I think they're having discussion about me that one of the supervisors comes up to me I asked him am I in trouble almost ready to break down I'm overwhelmed

      It sets our body into fight/flight/freeze/fawn when chronically in such situations. Sorry to hear you are having to deal with this. It sounds very stressful.

    In my experience those who get micromanaged do things to cause it to be a necessary step by the authority.
    No way am I wasting my time micromanaging a competent person who communicates effectively. That’s the dream employee.
    Some employees can be too independent in their approach and when it all goes wrong they will turn it on you and say “you’re the boss, what’s the next step”
    They immediately get defensive and dependent after you trusted them to get things done.
    Bottom line get rid of anyone you feel the need to micromanage.

      It sounds like you have a good approach. More hands-on leadership is definitely required in certain situations. And I do agree that when this becomes excessive, it may be an indicator that the person may not be a good fit.
      I also think that whether the origin of the micromanagement stems from the person being micromanaged or the one doing it depends. When it's long-standing, it often fulfils a need for both, unlike the situation you described.
      The book Flawless Consulting by Peter Block talks about the perils of entering relationships as the expert (heightened independence) or as the pair of hands (heightened dependence), rather than entering into a collaborative relationship. In the first two, it becomes easy to throw the full blame of the situation onto the other party. It's a great model of how to build collaborative relationships and his description has stuck with me since.
