Reinforcing positive behaviors through praise has always worked well in my experience. Helping staff understand vital behaviors to success and ensuring everyone feels valued are equally important to leadership. Excellent video! Thanks!
It's great to hear that this approach has worked well for you and that you understand the importance of helping staff understand vital behaviors to success and ensuring that everyone feels valued. These are all key components of effective leadership. I agree that reinforcing positive behaviors through praise is an important strategy for promoting teamwork, collaboration, and engagement. By recognizing and rewarding the efforts and achievements of our team members, we can create a positive and supportive work environment that fosters excellence and encourages continued growth and development. I am glad to hear that you found the video helpful and that you are committed to building a strong and effective leadership style. Thank you for your kind words and for the opportunity to share my insights on leadership. I hope that my guidance can continue to be of value to you as you continue to grow and develop as a leader. -Adrian
I recently read Angela Duckworth’s book Grit and she mentions, based on Carol Dweck’s research on a growth mindset, that we should praise effort as opposed to talent. Instead of calling someone smart or intelligent we should focus more on what they do to increase their intelligence. Also in Daniel Goleman’s book Focus he states that people who have a proclivity towards daydreaming may benefit from a wandering mind or less focused mind to help access their creativity or creative thoughts or thought process. Just thought I would share what I have recently discovered in my research and I am looking to you for most of my people skill guidance for I am a current awkward person. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise with those of us still trying to find our way out of the darkness.
Absolutely Vanessa! Well said, leadership is the most important and important aspect. its something that can be learned and i always wonder the saying born leader is so overrated, there are skill sets that you can acquire.
So how do you explain ppl who had same leadership training and one sucks at it and the other is just a natural leader. A lot is how you are as a person. Training can only do so much

Excellent and inspiring presentation mam. I have received much information about essential leadership skills- knowledge, understanding, learning, communication, body language, ask questions behaviorally, prospective characters etc. Thank you
I agree for the most part except for the part about smiling. As a manager, I think it’s very crucial to convey to your staff that you’re fully there to support and guide them. I may be wrong but it seems as if you’re suggesting to smile less often? Trust me, when you have a team of burnt out and overworked ppl due to corporate higher ups not authorizing to hire more staff (because they are greedy and trying to pinch pennies ), you smiling less comes off as cold, closed off, and discourages transparency. Your staff will not come to you with any concerns or ideas for improvement as they will get the vibe that you’re not approachable. I am not saying you need to “fake smile” every second, but smiling does foster trust and openness which is what you as a manager want if you are to keep your team cohesive and motivated.
@Vanessa..Thank you so much for putting this together. Do you have any suggestions on how to adapt these tips to remote working setup ? A video specific to remote working will be very helpful as it is the reality for many of us and some might not go back to regular office environment for a long time.
Not a manager here, but am I an anomaly? Praise makes me very uncomfortable, especially if it's done publicly. I derive intrinsic satisfaction when I have the support to do my job well. I am also very much logic/data driven and I head straight for seat F every time! 😂
I was a fast food employee for more than two years, and I've been given a management position. Right now I'm in training; trying to figure out how to build leadership. I certainly learned a couple of things in this video, I look forward to doing the best.
I disagree about leaders should smile less! It’s important for people to feel a leader being genuine, grounded and human. It’s important for leader to be and act who him/her true self. The world will be a pretty boring place if everyone conforms to a particular style
It is interesting how so many qualities of leadership run into conflict with need. Many managers get so focused on trying to "motivate" their staff they end up missing what would have them demoralized in the first place. A poor environment, personal stress, a lack of direction. A manager can take huge steps to being more "motivational" just by being more empathetic.
Revenge is like a police action against a criminal. Sure it costs but it deters and that is why revenge is a must. It is the law and order built in nature.
Such an inspiring video! Love the passion and information behind this! As a leader, inspiring others is the most important skill to have! Leaders are there to help their employees, or anyone, feel empowered enough to discover their purpose. Leaders are all about creating followers and connecting with them! Great content :)
when i'm at work i dont like getting attractions. i just got the job done, and i make sure my manger wont call me about problems at work when i got home. and because of that i got promoted as a team leader. my main problem is im bad at communication, im not use into talking or commanding or leading anyone but a part of me accepted this challenge. after a few months i am still struggling. so i decided to find videos about leadership and i find this. then i got this idea about praising my team for their improvements last week through group chat. in the morning i was so anxious that they will laugh of what i have said or it might not be a good idea. when the first person i praise approach me he was all smile and it's like he was in a good mood to work, then following person arrived with the same energy and it's like they are trying to impress me. that day it was fun and smooth. it build my confidence and also my team. thanks for this tips. it help a lot

Thank you for your time Vanessa. It has help me a lot your video. God bless you so much. A leader without God is for sure a tiger in this World But a Leader with God is a lions and eagles. Lion takes a territory and eagles are visionaries. We learn this in a Christian World. Just watch a Pastor preach and how he gets millions to follow them..
I frequently say this to my subscribers: "When you are walking and working in a rhythmic leadership mode, you have clearer thinking and a sharpened mindset that ignites your purpose, passion, and priorities."
To be a better leader I think leadership by example is among the best approach so far. One must be consistent, polite, and sometimes be humorous to reduce boredom.
@Vanessa Van Edwards , it is amazing to see how you have simplified the knowledge sharing on developing Leadership Skills. Decisions based more on Intuition and feelings would not be something I’ll say or “most men if not all men in leadership would say” Not in business. IJS this video lost me after that.
Your emotion is not good to use in a business decision. This is not good to tell people. The video was good up until that point Never make a business decision based on your remote on. All this hand action.. For what? Too much facial expression. Where ever i look for leadership videos, i see this over characterised person. When i had bosses and managers over me, they didn't do all this extra. And we took n them seriously. But that was 10 years ago. Do i need to also act like this to get ppl to act right? Bc i will. Ill do whatever it takes to get my employeesin line. They don't respect my small company like they would a big one.. And i pay as well or better
Disagree ! As a woman leader, my advice is to be true to your own value and demeanor - if you smile more and move more - do that! Don’t do what men do- smiling less is not the winning quality it’s the patriarchal artifact and a prevailing standard due to male dominated corporate culture !
You lost me at SMILE LESS, the people who I respect the most are those who are not afraid to smile or show genuine emotion. Smiling less does NOT make you a better leader. Being able to show your natural emotions, especially when it comes to positive emotions like smiling is a great leadership skill to have. If you want to smile. Im my experience people always choose the nicer friendlier boss over the one that does NOT smile or is not as friendly. Many of these tips are very superficial and do NOT get to the core of what a leader is.
Could it be more interresting too look at it as knowing when to show emotions? If someone smiles all the time, their smile won't be as impactful as someone who does it less (maybe). Its probably not easy having the find the right balance between emotional connection for a better relationship with their team and controlling some of their emotions in order to keep the team feeling safe, inspired, trusted and more. Just my 2c
I get your point regarding smiling at alphas. But disagree largely. I smile because am happy. I find it attracts good people to do what I need them to. I have several men that work with me, I am not their supervisor and rank as equal, in the company. However I am the most experienced in my field and command a great deal of respect among them, my supervisors and the rest of management in that company. They all ask me what, when and how. And my smile never dips, never has and probably never will. That said, I appreciate this video, and your presentation is top notch! Thanks!
Real story quick, Myself and one of my colleague interviewed a person through video call. I asked a similar behaviour question, How did you tackle a particular situation and how did you respond to a client appreciation... And immediately his tone of voice changed and the pace of interview was lost. Suddenly he seemed lost on the first question... Then we also let it go and carried on. Once the call was over, we replayed the recording. We watched it many times and understood that someone was helping him from behind the screen. Carefully looking, his eyes were looking a little bit away from camera or the screen. So the concept of the question you have mentioned here was the lifesaver. But we didn’t watch this video back then and now only got the behavioural science behind it. Such behaviour questions are really useful in current times where people are always meeting online. Thanks for the explanation and best wishes.
Hi Vanessa Van Edw - Your RUclips Video on "The Essential Leadership Skills To Be A Better Leader" is phenomenally Insightful and Your presentation is effective . Thank you & Well Appreciated
I agree that leadership is a very important skill. One thing that is a turnoff to.me is what I would call corporate sneakiness. That's what I hear when an interviewer is told to ask special, canned questions that supposedly reveal an applicant's psychology or personality. Why not try this: have an honest, open, sincere (unconniving) conversation with a prospective employee, and taking a look at their job history and application? Why do executive staff think they need to 'uncover' the true motivations of someone? In short: enuff with corporate BS. As to zero calorie time, you left out why many useless meetings happen: corporate structure, policies, expected behavior dictate that a meeting must happen. If you don't do it you are in serious trouble. Whether anyone got any benefit from attending the meeting becomes irrelevant. Yes, I do know corporate.
I agree with everything you said except when it comes to "smiling"! Smile is not a sign of submission; it's a a sign of self-satisfaction which is part of self-esteem.
Dear vanessa van edwards I don’t agree 100% with your 1 point as in the book *influence* it is mentioned that asking for a big request first and then a small request ( which u actually want ) works most of the time ! Your point is just opposite of it! Kindly correct me if i m wrong 😊!
Our brains are pretty sensitive to failure. When you continuously set goals that are too high to achieve and end up failing, it significantly decreases your motivation. I think the key is, as she mentions, is the 60/40 ratio:)
Haha. Leaders laugh and smile. Bean counting managers dont smile. Steve Jobs vs Tim Cook. Jeff Bezos vs idk any small insecure person who thinks they have to act like something to make themselves look leader like.
you mention behaviour of leaders, but by the same token that is also the behaviour of conmen. (trump im look at you here) being an alpha isn't necessary to being a good leader. this i think shows boss vs leader well. ruclips.net/video/OIoUGNExCaM/видео.html. both are leaderships styles but which would you rather follow.
Hello, Even tough you consider yourserf as a leader It worth to learn more, after all a true leader nerver stopping to discovery new skills. Brasil - SP
10:40 Abandon Revenge>>>>> sometimes when there's someone at work keep exasurating your delay at your work and keep fight with you and complain just to cover their failure, then we have to revenge at lease once so they know "don't play with me" side
Great video and subject! Question: in the current and post-COVID world, which body language will emerge as the best first impression in place of shaking hands?
Wow, you know these are skills of unethical leaders. Good leaders do not need to manipulate their followers with a smaller request followed by larger requests. The best leaders do not care where they sit. They know they can get the attention if they want it, but they are comfortable with who they are and do not need to position themselves in a room. Those ive known over the last 40 years do not need to use your definition of intuition by the use of achievements and awards. The awards and achievements speak for themselves and do not need to be pointed out. Now, if you want to talk about unethical or power hungry leaders. You're right on.
I would bet that many of the people who didn't want to put large signs up didn't want to look bad in front of their neighbors. When they saw their neighbors putting small signs up, they possibly felt more comfortable putting big signs up.
I don't agree with the smile less part. I think smile shows true confidence. The one who don't smile are too busy trying to look like a leader. You are a leader because of your abilities and characters not because of the image you put up. The ones who obsessed with how to look like a leader are never a leader
a good leader should be able to do the same things he asks of his staff. If my manager can't do what i do, why should i follow him because if i need help, he can't provide it.
the sound quality of this video is so yummy! Vanessa please consider giving your usual studio some sound treatment, it makes the content that much enjoyable and professional
Thank you, now i learned that leader smile in moderation, because too much smiling aint good for it may mean that you are tend to be submissive, leader knows where to sit, leader invest in communication.
I think you are contradicting your one statement. Leader is the one people follows him willingly. If they are agreeing to small yes means they are just trying to be friend and after sometimes they are agreeing to big yes it is only because they started to like you. Likeliness never been attributed to leadership. Leader is someone who sets the tone and people listen to him intitively even if they not like him. Last I do not think girls are less than anyone I m just talking from the point of view of scicology after reading so many book on girls scicology.
I think you are talking leadership quality as per girls scicology. This technique of small yes works for small time eventually the person to be manipulated recognise he has been manipulated. And the moment he recognised it he stop to follow you. People generally attracted to people who are truthful, honest, courageous, intelligent and genuine about there intention. Though at start they are reluctant to give there power to you eventually after sometimes they become your greatest admirer. So be honest whatever your intention is and keep repeating it with all honesty people will appreciate you for your genuiness rather than manipulation.
Vanessa Van Edwards was a God to my younger autistic self that so badly wanted to understand other people. Your doing amazing work. I don't think I would have made it this far without your knowledge sharing. Thank you!
I am saddened that you haven't included the military in your analysis. I spend 8 years working in an army reserve unit in australia. I got to see the whole gamut of leadership from exceptional to extremely poor. most of these leaders achieve in quiet feats that so called world leaders and fortune xxx companies can only dream about.
this is damn valuable. I personally use few things discussed here and now understand why our bosses use some of these methods on us too. thanks Vanessa. Always love your videos. they are always valuable.

I recently read Angela Duckworth’s book Grit and she mentions, based on Carol Dweck’s research on a growth mindset, that we should praise effort as opposed to talent. If you don't do it you are in serious trouble. Whether anyone got any benefit from attending the meeting becomes irrelevant. Yes, I do know corporate.
I can appreciate your post. You hit several nails on the head. This video actually is a turnoff to me.
Positive reinforcement instead of a rise or cash? Ah yes. Let them have cake to the peasants.
I agree with everything you said except when it comes to "smiling"! Smile is not a sign of submission; it's a a sign of self-satisfaction which is part of self-esteem.

It is so rare to find females speaking about leadership. I hope more females teach leadership.
These videos give me motivation to be better at work. Liability is what makes me reluctant to be a leader.
Samedt.
LOL, you must work in health care.
Agree! This is an inspiring video for people who seek development in their leadership position!
Right
Very excellent presentation and information on leadership skills.. thank-you.
Thanks for your help. This lessons for soft skills😊. I love it 💞
Dear vanessa van edwards I don’t agree 100% with your 1 point as in the book *influence* it is mentioned that asking for a big request first and then a small request ( which u actually want ) works most of the time ! Your point is just opposite of it! Kindly correct me if i m wrong 😊!
The Leader must have the ability to inspire his team ❤😊
Thank you for enlightening on Leadership skills to be a good leader
The leader must have the ability to impress his team ❤😊
Thank you Vanessa. This is profound, as Leaders we need to master for the best.
Our brains are pretty sensitive to failure. When you continuously set goals that are too high to achieve and end up failing, it significantly decreases your motivation. I think the key is, as she mentions, is the 60/40 ratio:)
Well said! ❤
Thank you Vanessa.. Excellent
Points and engaging...
I believe we must first self lead .
boring woman no leader
Oh so good!! #2 is definitely effective for ppl whose love language is Words of Affirmation
Seems you have read '5 Love Languages' :-)
Haha. Leaders laugh and smile.
Bean counting managers dont smile.
Steve Jobs vs Tim Cook.
Jeff Bezos vs idk any small insecure person who thinks they have to act like something to make themselves look leader like.
Inspiring session on essential leadership skills. Thank you ma'am
Very helpful! Thanks for sharing with us! Your voice sounds very similar with the voice of Alux RUclips channel: Amazing!🤗🥰
you mention behaviour of leaders, but by the same token that is also the behaviour of conmen. (trump im look at you here) being an alpha isn't necessary to being a good leader.
this i think shows boss vs leader well. ruclips.net/video/OIoUGNExCaM/видео.html. both are leaderships styles but which would you rather follow.

10:40 Abandon Revenge>>>>> sometimes when there's someone at work keep exasurating your delay at your work and keep fight with you and complain just to cover their failure, then we have to revenge at lease once so they know "don't play with me" side
Wish I could like this video ten times
It can't be true that you feel happier with higher goals... Having lower goals can save you loads of mental illness and rejection.
Please don’t give me praise over money. Show me appreciation by giving me money because you can do both. Money and praise.
Great video and subject! Question: in the current and post-COVID world, which body language will emerge as the best first impression in place of shaking hands?
Hi there! Here's a post on handshake alternatives that may help :) Thanks! www.scienceofpeople.com/handshake-alternatives/
Well said
❤

Thanks for watching!
You are very nice hot chocolate girl.
#2 I would feel insulted by a praise without a cash incentive. I'd rather not have the fake praise
🐈Great
Thanks for watching!
Hold on. You said popular people smile the most but now leaders smile least. Idk what to do. I want to be a popular leader😂
Inspiring session on essential leadership skills. Thank you madam
Such a powerful presentation.
I hate my group projects, I feel like baby sitting a child with internet addiction.

Vanessa Van Edwards was a God to my younger autistic self that so badly wanted to understand other people. Your doing amazing work. I don't think I would have made it this far without your knowledge sharing. Thank you!
Thank you so much for being here and I'm happy to hear that my content is helping you ❤
To your success!
Me too
I love this woman
Whats a replacement for the handshake during COVID?
I am saddened that you haven't included the military in your analysis. I spend 8 years working in an army reserve unit in australia. I got to see the whole gamut of leadership from exceptional to extremely poor. most of these leaders achieve in quiet feats that so called world leaders and fortune xxx companies can only dream about.
this is damn valuable. I personally use few things discussed here and now understand why our bosses use some of these methods on us too. thanks Vanessa. Always love your videos. they are always valuable.
Very informative
