Are You “One of the Guys”?
Being “one of the guys” has always been seen as an achievement, as it felt like a recognition of having made it. Oftentimes, in different fields and rooms, ‘guy’ related phrases are thrown around, with the assumption that the noun covers the entire gender spectrum,just like most dictionaries define it.
But just who are the guys?
And why are we all forced to fit in as ‘one of the guys’?

    You are talking about management, not leadership. You can have a leader amongst your employees who can subvert your authority. Trust is the key. It goes both ways. (I do not trust anyone). This links to the idea of control. Allowing employees to make mistakes is a tricky one because on the one hand you want them to learn and be creative, but on the other hand you don’t want them to ruin the entire enterprise.

    I wish my old supervisor saw this video, I was recently transferred to another area (I’m a factory worker), my new one told me, “As long as you solve a problem without putting yourself at risk of injury, It’s ok” in the new team, we are autonomous, everyone is trained in every area, we help each other, and we stop the production line, when rework is needed. The other one tries to brute force everything resulting in Quality Control issues, he does not allow you to leave your area and help others. After he transferred me, he found out that I was trained and certified in all of his areas. He doesn’t bother knowing each workers strengths and weaknesses.

    A lot of these examples seem to be related to situations where the manager is giving negative feedback and outcomes to an employee. While, the employee may certainly be passive aggressive, I would have to wonder if the employee feels like they are even allowed to have an open dialogue with the manager. What would concern me in these examples is that the employee is stated as going behind the manager and expressing their criticism back to the other employees. If the employee was the bad apple, in this example, I doubt that the other employees would take the response of the 'passive aggressive' employee seriously. However, that was not stated, and it would seem that the bigger problem was that the employee was disseminating information about their experience back to their teammates. This might be a culture issue or an issue with the manager...

    In my experience those who get micromanaged do things to cause it to be a necessary step by the authority. No way am I wasting my time micromanaging a competent person who communicates effectively. That’s the dream employee. Some employees can be too independent in their approach and when it all goes wrong they will turn it on you and say “you’re the boss, what’s the next step” They immediately get defensive and dependent after you trusted them to get things done. Bottom line get rid of anyone you feel the need to micromanage.

    • @CollaborativeSolutions
      @CollaborativeSolutions Год назад

      It sounds like you have a good approach. More hands-on leadership is definitely required in certain situations. And I do agree that when this becomes excessive, it may be an indicator that the person may not be a good fit. I also think that whether the origin of the micromanagement stems from the person being micromanaged or the one doing it depends. When it's long-standing, it often fulfils a need for both, unlike the situation you described. The book Flawless Consulting by Peter Block talks about the perils of entering relationships as the expert (heightened independence) or as the pair of hands (heightened dependence), rather than entering into a collaborative relationship. In the first two, it becomes easy to throw the full blame of the situation onto the other party. It's a great model of how to build collaborative relationships and his description has stuck with me since.

    Just because someone has the almighty title of “manager” it does NOT give them the right to interpret someone’s mannerisms or body language. If there is one thing in cannot stand, as someone who is more likely passive aggressive, is people always trying to read into what I am really saying. And before someone in a position of power thinks they know what a person is thinking just from judging their body language, perhaps they should ask themselves first if they are projecting their own insecurities onto another person.

    The one thing not mentioned in this video is that if you don't micromanage and you give your employees room to make their own decisions, this will not necessarily result in "mistakes" and "missteps". It's just as likely that the employees will come up with solutions of their own that are far better than anything you would have thought up.

    • @CollaborativeSolutions
      @CollaborativeSolutions 2 года назад

      Thanks Petrichor. My guess is that it would depend on the underlying culture of inclusivity within the organization, as well as the extent to which people have the skills to navigate communication differences effectively and with respect. In other words, I believe that it's not that the social and cultural differences are problematic but rather, when those differences aren't understood. Or when there's judgement of some of the differences as being "lesser than". I believe there needs to be an intentional strategy on how to build the skills needed to foster this type of culture, which needs to include feedback from across the organization. What are your thoughts on this?

      I can certainly see how gender dynamics can play out here. And also think it's common in anyone who has repeated experience being marginalized and not heard. I personally don't see it as exclusive to women. It's sad that the notion of feeling like one can't trust anyone at work is so prevalent...

      @@CollaborativeSolutions I say it is a gender specific thing in that i and the fellas i work with don't worry about manipulating each other, just do your job and go home where women seemingly do, then when they get home they play their husbands like children

    If someone is passive aggressive I cease all communication unless its absolutely necessary to perform my duties. Even then I keep it to just on topic talk. Lastly I let other people know why I have ceased communication with the offender. Its been my experience that “passive-aggressive” is another word for bully. Their end goal will be to discredit you while appearing to be the victim.

      You make a good point here. I too have seen situations where it really is sort of underground bullying. And yet no one identifies it because it is so subtle. And the person acts so differently when around others.

      Its amazing how wording it correctly like you have is so important. I wish I could have expressesd it so well to the relevant people, how clients behaved with me, for just doing my job.

    My “boss” is the worst perpetrator...I’m a contractor technically...she wants to treat us like employees without all the benefits of being an employee...no matter how many boundaries I enforce, she always tries to manipulate me...it’s been ten years of this shit and I’m to the point I just don’t care anymore

      Ugh, I'm sorry to hear this. That definitely sounds like a difficult situation to deal with. I do think that getting to that point of "not caring" (or at least, being willing to risk what we do care about) brings an added level of being able to hold to our boundaries. Which isn't always available at all times to everyone. I hope you will find some resolution to your situation.

      @@CollaborativeSolutions thank you! I reported to DOL and they closed the case because she wasn’t complying! Makes sense? Ugh so frustrating! But she has given us a small raise by screwing over our customers and raising prices! If my finances were in better shape I would just take out a business loan and open my own place! As soon as I can I will do just that!

    sory i got qn why culture is a backbone of communication?

    • @CollaborativeSolutions
      @CollaborativeSolutions 2 года назад

      Can you expand a bit more on what you mean by this? A lot of the elements of how we interact with others have been socialized into us, based on where we grew up, the identities we hold, etc. People often view the dominant cultural communication norms as those to strive for. In my opinion, truly effective communication is when each party can communicate in a way that feels authentic to them while also being able to navigate differences. When the burden of communicating more effectively is placed solely on one person (i.e. for instance, let's say when someone is told they need to learn to speak up more) we need to step back and look at where bias may be influencing this view.
