- In this video we are seeing an alarming trend of overheating Ford EcoBoost engines! @ford #ford #fordf150 #ecoboost #enginerepair #automotiverepair #failure #overheating
I had this very problem and took it to ford multiple times and they replaced so many parts trying to figure it out, I took it to a little oil change shop and they fixed it by just burping the coolant system.
Thermostat defect. Get updated one without copper sleeve. Happened to me twice already on two of my 17 ecoboost.
Yes a stuck thermostat as explained in some detail in the video.
@FordTechMakuloco dude your an awesome mechanic. 👌 thanks for all you do. I wish I could get your help on my 17 raptor ping issue under boost load. Can't seem to find if it's a ping or waste gate rattle or something more serious..
Yes, I saw the old video from a year or two ago, I updated to the yellow coolant and new polymer thermostat. No more high temps.
When I blew my 2.7 I got me a 5.0. If they do away with V8’s, I’m done with Ford
So we're are you going to go
So the 5.0 in the new F150 is not reliable either.. they changed the cylinder design and god rid of the alloy in the sleeve and replaced it with a teflon coating on the rings, which are burning oil.. obviously.. also changed the head and rod design and are having catastrophic failure issues as well.. also they have a major issue with engine pinging due to issues in the cam phasers on the 5.0.. and let's not get started on that 10 speed which might be the worst ford truck transmission ever made.

I have 109,000 on my 2018 5.0 and so far the tranny and the engine are holding up. The big Ford V8 might be an option, I hearing that, although it gets terrible milage, I'm getting 19.5, the engine is solid. Folks are going to it instead of the diesels for pulling trailers.
@@rustbeltrobclassic2512
Yes but nobody buys a truck with gas milage in mind that’s what I don’t get about people these days
Just did my ‘19 3.5tt at 95k. Notice fans at high speed once in a while then back to normal. Easy job bought new motorcraft thermostat and o-ring. Drained radiator into clean jugs but used new orange fluid. Idled for 15 mins and fans come on low speed. 👍🏼
I really like these tech tips. Thanks brother, you're my go to guy ford Fords!
What was the tech tip?
Mine was hitting 245deg and back down to 228 degrees, I bought a new thermostat and replaced my coolant and went one step further replaced my intercooler with bigger one from CV fabrication. My fan only comes on now when I have the air conditioner on and you could hardly hear it.
I had mine into the dealer under Warrenty and they put the old style thermostat in it. I just replaced it myself with the updated polymer one and we’ll see if that fixes it. Mine was getting to 235-238 when under load (not hauling) at highway speeds. 40,000 miles apart roughly 2 years.
I had the same issue. Installed the new part number Ford thermostat and it is 100% fixed.
I will have to try this. I get a lot of 228°-232° on highway, in winter temps in MN
@@jessewiant4545 oh same as I had. Definitely order the new thermostat and change it asap. Temps were 100% back to normal after normally 196F and only rises a few degrees under load. It's running way too hot and the fans are also running excessively.
@@jessewiant4545 I ordered both OEM parts from Rock Auto for $20. RT1252 thermostat and RG640 seal.
Sold mine.... unless you want to pay HUGE keeping these things on the road i recommend you do the same
So what did you determine as the issue high temp problem?
Thermostat sticking as explained in some detail in the video.
Ok. So what's causing it? What's the fix?
Wait what? You didn't hear me mention the thermostat isn't cycling? Problem here is RUclips cuts shorts short and I couldn't show the final test which is on my social media accounts.
I too had the same question, what was the actual fix?
Thermostat
@@FordTechMakulocothanks, I was going to ask as well. You were getting to it with showing the t-stat wasn't cycling, but with newer cars I can never tell if there's some other control system that's playing a role in the failure.
Thermostat brass plug wears and binds closed sometimes. Just buy a one, plug is plastic like and get a ford o-ring too.
love that ford gauges are all dumby gauges giving you a fake info.
I missed this channel all year
How big of a deal is it if you forget to add friction modifier to the rear diff when doing a fluid change
I've got the duratech it's the Ecoboost n/a sister 145k had one set plugs oil changes that's it never had a bolt lose and that's in a 150 that is used for construction the duratech a work horse. Ecoboost probably got coolant that is highly corrosive
Awesome video as usual. Thank you for all that you do.
I have a problem with my f150 2019
The orange light for the gear selector isn't light up,
Started with a park break limited function, then i noticed the light wasn't on, so i dont know if it's in gear or not
Happy with my 4.0 engine. No turbo, no problem.

The 4.0 inline six is a great motor.
Bet that 4.0 couldn't pull a noodle out of a mules ass.

Toyota Tacoma is about as good as a PU truck gets.....
Yep bad thermostat. Thankfully it’s a cheap and cake walk job to fix. Same thing happened on my 17 3.5. Changed it out when I did a full coolant change from the orange to yellow.
Imagine that
If you want a dependable truck, find an F-150 with 4.6 2 valve that's been maintained and it will most likely outlive you !! I have no experience with any other truck or engine but I'd definitely recommend and buy another F-150 with the 4.6 2 valve , But I don't think I'll ever have to lol
I wish I had mine back. She had 369k when I got rid of her
even the 5.4L is too weak for a lot of towing applications.
I agree, I had an '01 4.6 f 150 287,000k still running never had engine problems but I bought '18 f 150 3.5l ecoboost at 49k mi had cam phasers and timing changed. Smh.
What is the highest I should see under normal driving ? driving down the highway. Sometimes I can see 230° the numbers show up on the dash.
2016 f150 with a 5.0 liter.
Shop I took it to is having a hard time getting the valve covers to seal.
Do you have any suggestions?
Mine did this with an aftermarket thermostat. The moment i switched it to a Ford themostat all fixed. That will soon be the future.
Idk why guys buy anything after 2016..
We have had some GM trucks coming in with 5.3 and the fans are running continuously cold outside winter time and it's the thermostat every time
I'll never buy another ecoboost engine again..
Everyone is lucky, lots of eco-boost powered fords for sale, just out of warranty.
Dude what is with this recall on the new F150 ecoboosts catching fire from the coilpack wires?
never hear of it
We've had two trucks at work have it happen to them. It seems to only be the ecoboost wiring as of now and our fleet received the recall after the situations took place. Luckily the guys were with their trucks when it happened so the didn't burn to the ground.
@@aarongough2334 , "Ecoboost" sounded like a horrible label from the start. All I hear is "with Ford's Ecoboost!!" and it's problem after problem. Ford should've stuck with building reliable pushrod engines, all vehicle manufacturers should have instead all of the "cam phaser, VVT, cylinder deactivation, get better gas mileage and most importantly LOWER EMISSIONS!!!" BS.... The corrupt politicians/"elitists", EPA are making a disaster of the automotive industry by "attacking" the "ICE" vehicles that have helped build our nations around the world.
The manufacturers are doing it with poor designs, overcomplicated systems which aren't very "DIY" friendly and cost way too much to maintain/repair ON TOP of the ridiculous cost of these piles of junk. "$40,000 for a V6 sedan" that starts experiencing major problems 50K to 120K miles or 5-6 yrs whichever comes first when I bought a V6 well-equipped with a reliable old pushrod engine for $18,340 NEW that's lasted 20 yrs and 244,000 miles and haven't touched any engine/transmission internals yet! Only changed fluids/filters regularly and replaced left and right engine mounts along with coolant hose and valve cover gaskets, simple, inexpensive DIY jobs.
Yet with this newer garbage you often need scan tools for "diagnostics" to try finding which of the "20 different things that could be causing the problem" and then for "recalibration" which cheap "code readers" won't do. Then you learn "Oh that'll be a $2,700 repair for parts and labor, the book calls it an 8 hour job!" when most jobs on older vehicles could be done in just a couple of hours for a couple hundred dollars at most all but the most serious jobs like a freaking engine rebuild....
Change the thermostat and the problem will be solved. There is a problem with the design of the thermostat. Be sure to get a new thermostat from the Ford dealer.
Yes as explained in the video, not sure what the confusion is.
Right now, it’s cold where I live.
Why do they one, keep making these and two, why do people keep buying them
Glad I have a gen 1 ecoboost🤷♂️
So what was it? The thermostat?
Correct as talked about in some detail.
Love how the electronic temp gauge is reading normal on the dash. Are they gauges? Or just images?
They are buffered as all modern car are.
Can I ask why the coolant gauge in the center cluster isn’t reflecting an overheating engine? I paused the video to look and it seems the gauge is in the normal range. Just curious on what good is it if it’s not reading properly. @fordtechmakuloco
It’s basically just acts like a switch. I’m not sure about 15-20 body years but from 21-23 you can enable the actual temperature read out in a software called FORSCAN
Is it 2.7 eco 2015y too??
The gauge on the dash shows right in the midrange.
Yes and?
@@FordTechMakuloco well, it’s confusing. You say it is too hot, but the gauge is right where one would expect for normal driving. So what made the customer even bring it in? Without a scan tool, there is no way the customer would know that it is running that hot. That, and with it being that close to overheating, why isn’t the gauge up toward the top of the normal range? 220 is not really overheating, but it should be indicating on the high side of normal - not slightly left of middle as one would see for an engine running around 190.
The customer did not even realize it. Just things a good tech notices. The gauges are buffered on newer vehicles. It is not like the old days with analog gauges where the thermistor is directly wired to and corresponds to the current reading. For example in this case when it goes for 220 or so and crosses the 230-240 mark or so it will show normal and immediately jump to full pegged hot overheat, it will not slowly creep up to it as you would imagine. As I said listen to the fans and think with no load, no a/c and 30 degrees outside should the fans really be that high, no probably not. This tells you it should be investigated further.
@@FordTechMakulocoSo then the 'gauge' isn't really a gauge anymore but basically a glorified hot/too hot indicator?.... That sucks
@@harmonic75 every car is like that now, literally every car. Even fuel won't move like that because of a timer and a strategy called anti slosh, every is electronically controlled and buffered.
If you want to 100% see what's happening, you're only like 10 bucks away from it with a obdii reader and the torque app
Have you had any over cooling issues on the 7.3 gas?
Never seen one.
Ford needs at least some quality control
My Exped had a issue running hot and it overheated my trans when towing. Dealer thought it was a trans problem and rebuilt it. They were wrong. Ford has an updated part number for the new thermostat, fixed my problems Put the old therm in boiling water and it wasn't opening
yup
Why il stick to my 2.7 !
Just get a Chevy 6.0
Does the temp gauge on dash show it is hot?
I have a client with a same problem, her husband noticed that she arrive home when he is earing the low fans in high speed old the time..very good information and explanation.
Also check mineral scaling. Thermostat yes, but good chemical cooling system flush too.
No scale.
@@FordTechMakuloco this had to be done with my 16 3.5. Radiator was bad also.
It boosted to much 😂
And the explanation of why it happens? I had this thing when I had too much anti-freeze vs distilled water so everything was fine, but the heat transfer was poor due to that, as the anti-freeze has poor thermal capacity!
Why what happens?
@FordTechMakuloco
Dunno master teacher! You're the one who finds it out accurately and I was waiting for the answer from you!😉 You aren't probably knowing why can a fuel trim start rising to some +19% when moderately accelerating from a few percents above zero at idle, but maybe I'll find it out before you and get 100% more reputation points! Challenge accepted?
ok
Oh this is gonna be good.
It's a ford.😅
Hey man, I know you’re busy, but can you please tell me what the torque specs are on the valve covers for the 3.5 ecoboost? Thank you!!
Look up his Part 4 video of changing the timing chain on a 3.5. The torque sequence and amount are in the comments.
@@seagya4958 Thank you
Is it a Ford lol 😝
Just had a quick question for ya, 2016 f150 5.0L , doesn't overheat but the fan comes on loud when I am just idling. Any ideas ? The truck has 565,000 kms on it but still runs great other than the fan coming on for what appears to be no reason. Thanks
Had a similar issue on my 19',but only when towing 6000lb trailer on big hills, dealer installed new updated thermostat, issue solved
Would the infamous water pump be a potential culprit here as well or is it more the thermostat?
It is only the thermostat.
By infamous do you mean the internal ones inside the timing case? That's only on transverse front drive based applications. The engines with external pumps in longitudinal applications take 30 mins to change if you're slow. Huge difference in ease of service & durability.
That's why I will always say front drive is the devil's work.
What isn't wrong with ecoboost?
Nothing. Best selling truck most ecos equals most problems. Every brand has problems. I have 2 and they are great engines
Do you have a video on what to do for this?
Replace the thermostat.
After 2 bad ecoboost engines.. 2.7 and 3.5 I’m so happy to be back in a Toyota again.
I have had two since 2014 and they are fantastic. So there
Toyota is always a good oprtion for most folks, but Toyota is doing away with their V8's and going to turbo's like Ford. I tow too much for Toyota to be a viable option. Like I said above, the new big V8 from Ford is a good towing option instead of the PowerStroke which is too damn expensive to operate.
The newer turbo motors they put in the tundra’s were having issues as well. I’d probably get the last year they had the V8 option until they get em ironed out. Knowing Toyota it won’t be long.
It's way too common to find bad thermostats on the Mopar 3.6 as well.
This is why mine is a 3.5L naturally aspirated
Do you know what the revised Motorcraft part number is for the thermostat
RT1252 and RG640
@@FordTechMakuloco thanks
@@FordTechMakuloco thank you so much I replaced mine today and now it's running at the temperature it was supposed to appreciate you doing these videos and show on his things mad respect to you
It’s the thermostat. Mine was doing this nonstop. Especially climbing hills. It would get up to 235. There’s an updated part number for the thermostat. I’m not a technician and knew that. Don’t need a computer to figure that shit out.
Yes as explained multiple times in the videos and yes as explained you can just listen to the fans and put two and two together.
It appears as the temp gauge isn’t showing hotter than normal, or did I see the wrong gauge?
Dummy guage
The gauge is practically a dummy switch. It'll tell you when it's too late
No, you're correct. The gauge is not moving like an old school gauge. It's more of a normal or overheating gauge. With a 8" cluster you can enable the numeric temp. Or listen for the rad fans to be screaming.
The cluster gauge is buffered.
@@FordTechMakuloco glad my 2012 still has a regular gauge. Hard to hear the fans if you’re going down the highway. I had a typical coolant leak and noticed my fans/ temp going up more than normal. But just the fans I’m not sure I would have noticed as much.
No P0128?
No, a P0128 code sets when the thermostat sticks open.
Ford is in a world of hurt with these eco boost motors. Trying to get too much power from less liters and not holding up to the task. Too many electronics and moving parts in these motors. Just junk.
Wrong. There are so many out there you just here the problems. Simply great engines i have 2
Sorry I disagree. We had a 2019 ford edge with the 2.0 liter and at 12,000 miles the flex plate cracked and had to have it replaced along with the torque converter. I would not say that it’s a good engine. Total junk and when the dealership said it was done we refused the car back and traded it for a Four Runner.
I went to the Ford dealer to get my wife a low-milage RX 350 and when I was talking to the rep and told him that I blew a 2.7 he asked me what milage and I told him 35, 500, right before the normal warranty was over, he said he has heard the same story on the 2.7 from way too many customers, that's why that Ford dealer will not order a 2.7.
@@02hreblue30109,000 on my 16 3.5 ecoboost. Purrs like a kitten.
I see that the thermostat is cycling but what else could it be
Isn’t cycling
Have you figured out what is causing it? I replaced my water pump and thermostat in my 2015 2.7L and it will be at 190 to 187 when I drive and go up to 210 if I am waiting in traffic. If I turn on my AC or heat the temperature will start to drop a little
That sounds normal. Steady cruise on a cold day will be 225-235 or higher with the bad thermostat
Sounds perfectly normal.
@@FordTechMakuloco thank you for your response
The cooling fan(s) on most vehicles since 2000 have on at 215-222F and off at 195-200F. If you turn on a/c then fan runs to keep a/c pressure in check and coolant temp will be 15 or more degrees cooler. I was in tech support and I had loads of calls where techs would leave cap off and get convinced the vehicle had head gasket issues as they would get a few degrees over boiling temp and coolant would vomit out of rad or pressurized coolant tank when coolant would boil.
What was it.... waterpump failure with air pocket?
Thermostat sticking as I explained in some detail during the video.
When is part 2 when we hear “the rest of the story”? - ie why it’s doing this…
I told you in the video the thermostat was stuck and not cycling like it should be as shown on the scan tool.
@@FordTechMakuloco - Thanks for the explanation in just plain words... I must have just listened to that and thought there was a reason the T-stats start messing up like that and you were going to explain why. But just a bad t-stat which eventually stopped working... Certainly appreciate all you do Brian. Take care, Clay
Update your ids
For what? If you are inside enough to know the IDS is behind, then you also know about the problems Ford has with every new release and to wait. I have been going through this since back in the day when the IDS came out and I am not going to change now.
Can you take out the thermostat and run the truck with out the thermostat?
I have excessive road noise when driving... think I can just drive it with the wheels off?
Then it won’t get hot.
I got tired of bugs on my windshield so I removed my windshield
Not being a smart ass like some, cars are meant to operate within a general temperature range. The car would run like crap because it will take forever to warm up (if it ever does).
Oh, it will warm up all right, especially in the summer. The coolant needs to have the thermostat in place and functional to allow enough time for the radiator to dissipate heat. No thermostat would allow the coolant to cycle thru the entire system too fast until it becomes heat saturated.
