- Thursday December 5th 2019 witnessed the return of Number 2 Operational Conversion Unit (2OCU) back to RAAF Base Williamtown, in New South Wales, after returning from RAAF Townsville in North Queensland, and partaking in Exercise High Sierra 19.High Sierra represents the last three weeks of the operational conversion course onto the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18A/B Hornet. As the trainees return to Williamtown signifies their final flight before graduation, it has been a tradition for up to all aircraft participating to return in formation over the base, before landing in front of friends and family.2019 is poignant as its the last ever OPCON onto the RAAF's 'Classic' Hornet, and will see 2OCU move onto the fifth generation Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II in 2020.Aviation Spotters Online was privileged to have been invited along to witness and record this historic moment in RAAF history, along with the privilege of having a one on one interview with the CO, and one of the newest graduates of 2OCU.
