    I joined the RAN in early 1988, hoping I’d never have to go to war. I was willing to, which is why I joined, but the horror stories I’d heard about WWII in particular, and the Falklands war which we learned many lessons from too, made me not desire it.
    Having said that, the RAAF are awesome! I’ve always been an aviation geek, and got to see 3 Mirage IIIs and and an F-111 in a diamond formation over my school in Tasmania in 1982! And a larne splash target streamed 500 yards astern being bombed by an F-111 off the QLD coast. Not to mention all the P-3s we operated with.

      @Afrad Yes, you should go for it. The main thing is that you find something you really love and find a way to make that your career. Too many people (and I have been one of them at times) settle for jobs/careers they can't stand simply to pay the bills. I eventually found what I love, but spent too much time just 'surviving.' Don't make that same mistake. If you love planes, study all you can about flying and go for it. Don't listen to people who say you can't possibly do it. If you love it, go for your dream. If you have the passion go for it👍😎

    • @slickstrings
      @slickstrings 2 года назад +2

      Wouldnt read much into it. They are flying every day. I live near the base. They are in the air monday 2 friday, sometimes 2 hops a day.

    • @puffin51
      @puffin51 2 года назад

      @@slickstrings Good. Like me, you're concerned with numbers. So how many F-35As are we talking about, at this base? If the base is RAAF Williamtown, it's 37. So how many sorties do you see, per day? If we know that, we can work out what sortie rate is being achieved, at least. That's not necessarily an indication of actual availability for all missions, but it's a step towards it. What I know is that every service, US and other, that operates this aircraft is very reluctant to give that information.

    • @slickstrings
      @slickstrings 2 года назад

      @@puffin51 they are active at more than one base, and from what ive been told by people who are on those bases, there is nothing out of the ordinary activity wise. They arent constantly being stood down due to maintenance issues. They are up every day.
      I also dont think the idea that the pilots dont answer the question of air to ground time is an indication of a problem. The pilots i doubt would have that data and i dont think they get asked that question. They dont fly the same jet every day, and the same jets dont fly every day. Only long term maintenance data can show that info.

    • @puffin51
      @puffin51 2 года назад

      @@slickstrings "Only long term maintenance data can show that info." Absolutely. That's why it frustrates me that I can't find it. All the figures I can find are years old, and they're not good. Perhaps the problems have been solved, but if so, I can find no hard data.

      @@trevorspeedy6333 No, it's not crap. And there's more. The F-35A can carry, while stealthy, 2 AM-RAAM 120s and either one A2Ground weapon or two dumb bombs to a combat radius of 1093 km, max. The Flankers operated by the Indonesian air force have a combat radius of 1800 km, with a much greater load, without stealth - but on the other hand, the air bases needed for the F-35 are very large targets, and the F-35s can't be scrambled to defend them, unless they have the right data loaded, and are in all respects ready for that specific mission. Trash any of the maintenance buildings - which have to be "clean", and humidity and temperature controlled, and the F-35s can't use that base. And the only air defences we have are MANPAD shoulder-launch. Does this suggest a deployment and a strategy to you? If so, I'm pretty sure it has occurred to the Indonesians, too.
      WTF we are going to do with these fragile little prima donnas if it should ever go down over, oh, west New Guinea, or the South China Sea, is beyond me. They can't fly from any base that hasn't been built at a cost of billions for that specific purpose. It would be laughable, except that I look at the costs to fly and maintain them, know that they're coming out of taxes I pay, and suddenly I'm not laughing any more.
